Magnolia Home Entertainment: RAGNAROK [BLU-RAY/DVD]

Directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose (COLD PREY – THE BEGINNING)
Written by John Kåre Raake
Starring Sofia Helin, Pål Sverre Hagen (KON-TIKI)

An archeologist is convinced the Oseberg Viking ship contains the answer to the mystery of Ragnarok, the end of days in Norse mythology. He mounts an expedition to “No Man’s Land” between Norway and Russia, which holds a secret more terrifying than he could possibly imagine.

Subtitled film, but very entertaining adventure... not that the titles below changes anything. I think it helps get the film a bit better. It's a great little tale of finding something that doesn't belong to you and what might happen if you take it. Great effects, not over the top story line and I cared about the characters...

Lakeshore Records: LAGGIES - Benjamin Gibbard

Lakeshore Records will release the LAGGIES – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack currently available digitally and on CD December 9, 2014.  The album features original score by Benjamin Gibbard (KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON, the band Death Cab For Cutie) – his first film score for a narrative film.

Overeducated and underemployed, 28 year old Megan (Keira Knightley) is in the throes of a quarterlife crisis. Squarely into adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to think about her future and no one to relate to, Megan is comfortable lagging a few steps behind – while her friends check off milestones and celebrate their new grown-up status. When her high-school sweetheart (Mark Webber) proposes, Megan panics and– given an unexpected opportunity to escape for a week – hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year old Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Annika’s world-weary single dad Craig (Sam Rockwell).

Lynn Shelton, whose unique directorial voice created such astutely observed comedies as YOUR SISTER’S SISTER and HUMPDAY, crafts a sweet, romantic coming-of-age comedy about three people who find their lives intertwined in the most unconventional way as they make through the imperfect realities of modern day life. Keira Knightley shines as Megan, a rare female slacker hero who shows us that while you never stop growing up, you can choose stop lagging, and start living on your terms.

A24,Anonymous Content and The Solution Entertainment Group present LAGGIES, currently in theaters nationwide.  The LAGGIES – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album is currently available digitally and on CD December 9, 2014.

Varèse Sarabande: THE RIOT CLUB - Kasper Winding

Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE RIOT CLUB – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on November 17, 2014.  The soundtrack features original score by Kasper Winding (THE SALVATION, 63 REGARDS) and featuring “We’re Out There Somewhere” performed by Graham Coxon.

“We searched for a balance between electronic, acoustic sounds, and that Lone [Scherfig, director] wanted a quite melodic score,” described Winding. “We also discussed how English it should sound.  It’s easy to fall into the cliché when filming upper class kids in Oxford so we decided to start almost rococo with mock Mozart, and then make it more and more sinister as the film develops.”

Set amongst the privileged elite of Oxford University, THE RIOT CLUB follows Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin), two first year students determined to join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening.

THE RIOT CLUB is directed by Lone Scherfig, who most recently helmed ONE DAY, and the Best Picture Academy Award nominee AN EDUCATION. It is produced by Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Seven Psychopaths). Screenwriter Laura Wade has adapted her critically-acclaimed play, POSH, with development support from the BFI Film Fund and Film4.  POSH premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2010, before transferring to the West End.

Sony Pictures Classics presents THE RIOT CLUB, currently in theaters in the UK.  THE RIOT CLUB - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally on November 17, 2014.

Kronos Records: P.J. [2014] - Music by NEIL ARGO
Limited Edition Of 300 Copies
November 28, 2014

A man who has witnessed a horrific accident retreats within himself.  He is brought to a hospital where the resident doctor tries to get through to him while the doctor is fighting his own life's demons and an out-of-touch supervisor who wants the man permanently committed.

The music for P.J. was written by veteran composer Neil Argo (Wild America, MacGyver, Beverly Hills 90210) who penned an elegant jazz infused, very eclectic, dramatic score that provides the perfect ambiance for both the film and New York City, where the film was shot. A truly hidden gem. NOT TO BE MISSED!

Sony Masterworks: Exodus: Gods and Kings - Alberto Iglesias

For the upcoming epic action-adventure Exodus: Gods and Kings acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator) has recruited three-time Academy Award nominee Alberto Iglesias to compose the film score.  The soundtrack will be from Sony Classical digitally on December 9 and on CD on December 16. 20th Century Fox releases Exodus: Gods and Kings in theaters everywhere on December 12.

When it came to the music for his visually stunning movie, Ridley Scott has opted as much for delicate arrangements as orchestral bombast – a noteworthy decision considering the truly monumental production. Strings, choir, featured soloists and soulful vocals complement Iglesias trademark composing style in this breathtaking score. Iglesias provides the biblical material a historic yet modern feel. Given the challenge of maintaining the upper hand in such a large project, the highly versatile Iglesias skillfully masters the gap between subtle emotion and martial brutality.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire.  Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

Intrada: Maurice Jarre's MANDINGO/PLAZA SUITE

The 1975 Paramount film Mandingo opens with a blues song, “Born in This Time,” sung by Muddy Waters.  Waters’ participation came at composer Maurice Jarre’s request. Much of Mandingo’s underscore derives from “Born in This Time,” with Jarre changing up the rhythm and highlighting its intricate countermelodies. To this, he adds a second theme—a folksy ditty that ranges in tone from genteel romance to spirited bustle. These themes appear initially to be simple parody, but as the film progresses, sour notes and jangling dissonances intrude, to ever more disturbing effect. More subtly, Jarre thickens certain cues with restless harmonies and busy, almost frantic counterlines to create a sense of uncomfortable aural pressure.

The plot centers on Hammond Maxwell (Perry King), his bed-slave, Ellen (Brenda Sykes), and his wife, Blanche (Susan George). When Hammond acquires Mede (Ken Norton), a fighting slave of prized Mandingo descent, to use as breeding stock, it sets into motion an alarming series of events. Jealousy abounds, slaves rebel, and the plot builds to a bloody, taboo-shattering conclusion.

In striking contrast, the score to Mandingo is paired with an earlier Jarre effort from 1971 --  the premiere release of his light and jazzy score for the Neil Simon-penned comedy Plaza Suite.  Plaza Suite consists of three acts, each starring a different couple and set in Suite 719 of Manhattan’s historic Plaza Hotel. There is no interaction between the stories, although all touch on themes of marriage or fidelity.  While the characters in each story were different, Walter Matthau played the male lead in all three, while the female leads were played by Lee Grant, Barbara Harris and Maureen Stapleton.

Brief as his musical contribution is, Jarre manages to infuse each segment with its own distinctive character. Story one begins with an air of stylish elegance and ends with a melancholy passage of disillusionment. Story two is bookended by a swinging, synth-infused number that dovetails humorously with Jesse’s self-important swagger and somewhat ridiculous mod toupée. In between, however, is a solo flute appropriate to the two lonely souls looking for solace in one another’s company. Finally, the wedding segment receives a mellow ballroom waltz, alongside tongue-in-cheek riffs on Richard Wagner’s famous “Bridal Chorus” from the opera Lohengrin.

Mandingo was newly remixed from the 16-track 2″ masters, which survived in excellent condition.  For Plaza Suite, four cues were taken from a set of ½″ three-track masters, recorded in early 1971 at Goldwyn Studios. The remaining two cues have been carefully restored from a mono source.

Intrada: Konrad Elfer's FUNERAL IN BERLIN...

For the 1966 Paramount film Funeral in Berlin, famed Bond producer Harry Saltzman hired veteran German pianist and composer Konrad Elfers to provide the follow on score to John Barry's effort for the first film, The Ipcress File.  Elfers wrote a score that sits comfortably between the works by Barry and Richard Rodney Bennett (who would compose music for Palmer's third film, Billion Dollar Brain), combining the requisite jazz/big band sound of spy movies with a mix of classical and modernistic orchestral music that evoked the historical and modern aspects of the film’s setting in Berlin.

The original RCA Victor LP boasted an unusually comprehensive presentation of Elfers’ score at around 39 minutes of music. This expanded Intrada version features all the album cues—including two that were dropped—sourced from 1/2” three-track masters.

Funeral in Berlin was directed by Guy Hamilton, who had made Goldfinger, the most popular Bond film to that point. The plot has Harry Palmer (with Michael Caine reprising the role having first played it in The Ipcress File) assigned to facilitate the defection of a Russian colonel, whom Palmer immediately suspects has another agenda. In fact, Stok is using Palmer to expose and eliminate an operative who has been facilitating defections from the Soviet Union. Palmer’s Berlin contact and friend initially aids Palmer, but after an attractive model attempts to seduce Harry, Palmer discovers that she is an Israeli agent in pursuit of a former Nazi in possession of money stolen from Jewish victims by the Third Reich.

Madfish Music: GONG releases new album, I SEE YOU!

The current incarnation of Gong comprises vocalist / lyricist Daevid Allen, who, even at the age of 75, still radiates an incandescent creativity, the original anarchic vibe that was born out of counter-culture revolution in the Paris commune in 1968. Allen's own, highly idiosyncratic worldview helped kick-start the classic Brit psychedelic explorers, Soft Machine when the '60s were still swinging. His co-conspirators on I SEE YOU are Orlando Allen on drums, new guitarist Kavus Torabi (The Cardiacs), guitarist Brazilian Fabio Golfetti, horn player Ian East winds, and bassist Dave Sturt (the sonic manipulator).

I SEE YOU is timeless and timely, a welcome antidote to an increasingly homogenized musical mainstream. The playful song "I See You" is fusion and kicks off the album. "Syllabub" could be a hit, and namedrops culture in a fun-loving way. Tracks such as "This Revolution," a spoken piece which namechecks Gil Scott-Heron and picks up the vibe of his "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," articulates the kind of concerns and theories that've always inspired Daevid Allen and informed the Gong worldview, contrasts with the ferocious inter-stellar Funk of "You See Me," which is sure to be a live favorite. "Thank You" is a heavy slab of psychedelicised blues, whilst the closing song "Shakti Yoni Dingo Virgin," a moody, melodic instrumental piece with heavy pant-singing--serves to illustrate the immense musical firepower and musical diversity that lurks within the current line-up of Gong.

Gong hopes to take I SEE YOU out on tour in the coming months when Daevid's health will allow. Do listen, because I SEE YOU offers up yet more proof that Daevid Allen's creative wellspring shows no sign of running dry, and that the latest Gong line-up has the kind of musical acumen that matches any of their classic line-ups of yore.

Gong is a Franco-British rock band formed by Australian musician Daevid Allen. Other notable band members include Kevin Ayers. Tim Blake, Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Francis Moze, Mike Howlett, Pierre Moerlen, Allan Holdsworth, Bon Lozaga, Hansford Rowe. Mick Taylor & Darryl Way have played on Gong albums, and Van Der Graaf Generator drummer Guy Evans played with Gilli Smythe's Mother Gong Others who have, albeit briefly, played in Gong include Bill Bruford, Brian Davison, Don Cherry, and Chris Cutler.

MovieScore Media: Operation Arctic - Trond Bjerknes

MovieScore Media ventures to the cold and desolate Arctic circle with its latest release, Operation Arctic (Operasjon Arktis) by Trond Bjerknes. Written and directed by Grethe Bøe-Waal based on the bestselling novel of Leif Hamre, the film follows the adventures of three children who are left alone in a winter storm on an island of the Spitsbergen. 13-year-old Julia (Kaisa Gurine Antonsen) and her two 8-year-old twin siblings Ida (Leonora Valestrand Eike) and Sindere (Leonard Valestrand Eike) must fight for their survival while their parents on the mainland are desperately looking for them, not realizing that they are stuck on the other side of the Arctic Ocean.

The music for Operation Arctic was written by Trond Bjerknes, a veteran of the Norwegian film scoring scene. Born in 1958, Bjerknes started to play the piano at the age of five, he wrote his first composition a year later. He stayed in the United States for five years and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to gain experience in film scoring. Back in Oslo, he formed his own production company; his debut film was Hamilton (1999), directed by Harold Zwart and starring Lena Olin, Mark Hamill and Peter Stormare. His work on Cecilie was nominated for the Danish Robert Award in 2007, while his music for Max Manus was nominated for the Norwegian Kanon Award in 2008.

"The score is written and produced to reflect the hostile beauty of the Arctic environment and the challenges these three children experience trying to survive alone on the deserted island" says the composer about the role of his music in the film. The score is a hybrid of symphonic and electronic solutions, utilizing smooth synth textures, solo voice, solo violin and cold percussive samples to paint the portrait of the Arctic circle. The cues range between deeply emotional, almost spiritual moments (such as ”Northern Lights”) and high-octane action scenes as the three children face the dangers on ice ("Into the Water", "The Rescue"). The versatile scoring of Operation Arctic covers every aspect of this mysterious world as the music conjures up images of ice and darkness on its own.

I love being introduced to new music from across the globe, it is amazing talent here for you all to hear from composer Trond Bjerknes. You can find all levels of adventure in the score to this film, following the notes to script to screen... It's a treat, truly!

MovieScore Media: The Game [2014] - Daniel Pemberton

The Game (Original Television Soundtrack) will be available in digital stores exclusively in the US and Canada from November 4 onwards. The album will then be released on CD and digitally in the rest of the world in the first quarter of 2015.

Co-inciding with the November 5 premiere on BBC America, MovieScore Media releases the original score album for BBC’s high-concept spy series The Game composed by Daniel Pemberton (the upcoming The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Ridley Scott’s The Counselor) in digital stores exclusively in the US and Canada. The album will then be released on CD and digitally in the rest of the world early 2015.

The Game is by writer/creator Toby Whitehouse (Being Human, Doctor Who) and director Niall MacCormick (Complicit). The six-episode spy thriller reignites the Cold War as the head of MI5 codenamed Daddy (Brian Cox) sets up a secret committee to investigate a Soviet plot. Operation Glass, which is revealed by a leaving KGB officer, involves a sleeper agent in Britain who is about to be re-activated as part of a secret mission. Each episode of the series follows the investigation of a possible traitor / sleeper agent; the possible suspects are played by actors like Paul Ritter, Victoria Hamilton and Tom Hughes.

Though Daniel Pemberton has been getting more involved in feature film scoring, Daniel has great experience in the field of television scoring, having worked on over 500 shows. Credits include countless award winning dramas and documentaries, amongst them Prey, Complicit, Space Dive, Peep Show, Desperate Romantics, Occupation, Upstairs Downstairs, Prehistoric Park and Hiroshima.
