Sony Music is proud to announce the release of renowned composer John Williams’ original motion picture soundtrack of The Book Thief, a moving film by Brian Percival based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief tells the inspirational story of a spirited and courageous young girl who transforms the lives of everyone around her when she is sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany.  The film stars Academy Award®-winner Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech), and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves). The young Canadian Sophie Nélisse takes on the role of their adoptive daughter Liesel.

The original score was written by composer John Williams, whose work includes some of the best-known film music of all time including all of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, the first three Harry Potter films, Jaws, Superman, E.T., Schindler’s List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Memoirs of a Geisha, Lincoln and Jurassic Park. He’s earned five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe® Awards, seven BAFTA Awards and an astonishing 21 Grammy Awards®. His total of 48 Academy Award® nominations to date makes him the Academy’s most-nominated living person, an achievement surpassed only by Walt Disney. In addition to music for the movies, Williams has written numerous concert works, and served as the Music Director of the Boston Pops Orchestra for fourteen seasons.

The touching story of The Book Thief gave Williams a wonderful canvas for original music, and an opportunity to demonstrate his mastery of intimate orchestral composition, including many wonderful solo instrumental textures.  The soundtrack opens with a plaintive and haunting solo piano passage in the track “One Small Fact”.  The lyrical third track, New Parents and a New Home, again features piano with sweeping strings.  Upbeat and lively pieces such as The Snow Fight and Foot Race add lightness and a playful exuberance to the score. For a key scene in the movie, the track Book Burning contributes dark, threatening, discordant notes, while Max and Liesel, underscoring the girl’s relationship with the young Jewish man her foster parents are hiding, has a tender, slow oboe melody.  In Learning to Write Williams selected the cello for an introductory solo.  Towards the end of the soundtrack, Max Lives is a joyful piece that releases tension, followed by a serene finale and a summing-up of the whole in the final track, The Book Thief.  The subtlety of the compositions and Williams’ ability to conjure complex emotions are evident throughout this extraordinary score.

Two recent film soundtrack releases by Williams, Lincoln and War Horse, produced strong sales on the Sony Classical label. The quality of the movie The Book Thief and of its superb, moving original score, leaves no doubt that this release, scheduled for November 20, will also find a wide and enthusiastic audience.

Coinciding with the theatrical release of the film in United Kingdom, MovieScore Media and Kronos Records releases Irish composer Liam Bates’ high-octane action score for Last Passenger, an intense genre movie taking place on a speeding London commuter train.

Influenced by some of the most stylish and effective of Jerry Goldsmith’s action scores from the 1970s and 1980s, Bates has composed a truly exciting, dark and interesting orchestral score that will attract fans of classic action film scoring. Director Omid Nooshin wanted a score “unrepentantly musical and expressive, a throwback to a bygone era of thrillers which inspired my movie in the first place.” Hence, the orchestrations features an emphasis on brass and percussion with a lot of agitato string writing in the rhythmic writing, juxtaposed by reflective melodic themes. One of those scores that changed the musical ear of Danny Elfman as this score was epic and beautiful. I believe at this point many of the music composed by Elfman was dark as this takes a journey to a story more familiar to many of a horse. He has always given us a great score, but this one was more of a powerful piece. Now La-La Land shares that journey in a remastered/expanded version that will make you remember your love for Elfman's work as it did for me.

This is one of my favorite films and books by Stephen King, which naturally would make the score one of my favorites, it is. It is expanded and it is wonderfully remastered from the original score of 30-ish minutes, it's twice the length. I always find there are certain scores that I get excited about and this "Pet Sematary" is still one of my "Holy Grail" scores that I hoped one day it would be like this. People here it is!

Arrested Development is an American television sitcom created by Mitchell Hurwitz which originally aired on Fox for three seasons from November 2, 2003 to February 10, 2006. A fourth season of 15 episodes was released on Netflix on May 26, 2013.[1] The show follows the fictitious Bluth family, a formerly wealthy and habitually dysfunctional family, and is presented in a continuous format, incorporating handheld camera work, narration, archival photos, and historical footage. Ron Howard serves as an executive producer and the series' uncredited narrator. Set in Newport Beach, California, Arrested Development is filmed primarily in Culver City and Marina del Rey.

Since its debut in 2003, Arrested Development, created by Mitchell Hurwitz, has received widespread critical acclaim, six Primetime Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award. Although it originally ran three seasons it attracted a huge cult following. So much so that in 2013 Netflix agreed to license 15 new episodes and distribute them exclusively on its streaming video service.

Arrested Developments composer David Schwartz selected the songs and score from all four seasons of the show, with a heavy dose of madcap ballads and ukulele themes for the soundtrack.

Set in the Caribbean at the dawn of the 18th Century, Freedom Cry is a stand-alone story about Adéwalé, a former slave-turned-assassin who attempts to save his enslaved people in Haiti. To immerse players in the game, Deriviere's sweeping emotional score features performances by a world-class symphony orchestra as well as live drums, a cappella soloists and choir performed in the tradition of Afro-Haitian ancestral music. The Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry Original Soundtrack will be available for digital download on iTunes and other digital music sites to precede the release of the game.

Composer Olivier Deriviere recorded his original score for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry with The Brussels Philharmonic (The Artist) and La Troupe Makandal, the internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to traditional Haitian music and dance. GHOUL: THE MOVIE belongs on LIFETIME not CHILLER!

Judging by the commercial and DVD cover of GHOUL from CHILLER FILMS I was expecting a fun type horror movie about three boys running around having adventures like THE GOONIES building a club house near a cemetery and having to deal with the title monster that lurks nearby.  Instead what I got was a movie about child abuse and child molestation.  I am dead serious, folks.  This movie has almost nothing to do with horror.  It plays out more like a really bad worse than usual Lifetime Original Movie and you know how much we all love watching those.

GHOUL is a misguided mess.  It advertises itself as a horror movie but when you sit down and watch the bland thing you will realize that this movie is spending a vast majority of its time dealing with the three main characters personal dramas.  The main kid's grandfather just died, his best friend is being touched inappropriately by his own mom and his other best friend is constantly being beat by his father.  That is pretty much the whole movie.  Every now and again a scene will pop up dealing with a creature that kidnaps girls and seems to be helped by one of the boys fathers but those scenes are few and far between and seem out of place with the rest of the film.  When you think that the movie couldn't get any more uncomfortable we are force to sit through a story about some guy whose wife went crazy and drowned her two infant boys and then committed suicide.  Eventually you do get to see the "ghoul" finally attack someone which leads you to immediately realize that there ain't no monster at all.  It isn't hard to recognize that it is a guy in a gillie suit posing as a monster. By 1985, composer James Horner's career was flying fast and furious after scoring Star Trek II just a few years earlier. By the mid-80s Horner had broken the sound barrier, and in the summer of '85 he established his relationship with director Ron Howard on the 20th Century Fox film Cocoon. From the opening notes that evoke a sense of wonder, the viewer knows the film will take him on a magical journey. The music itself is no less a magical journey. At times the score evokes playfulness, adventure, romance, heartbreak, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and glory. All dimensions James Horner excels at and was his hallmark throughout the '80s.

Intrada's expanded re-issue of Cocoon is a long overdue reissue, less so for its expansion than for its sonic upgrade. The original album released in 1985 was prepared in accordance with that era’s aesthetics, with agreeable results, yet far removed from the original dynamics captured by engineer Armin Steiner on the Fox scoring stage. This release uses Steiner’s original 3-track mixes, resulting in a definitive presentation of one of the composer’s major early efforts.

Composer Basil Poledouris was a natural choice to provide the musical accompaniment for Jack Ryan’s memorable first film adventure, The Hunt for Red October. Not only had much of the film been tracked with his music, but the film’s story combined elements that recurred in many of the composer’s projects, including U.S.–Soviet relations (Red Dawn, Amerika), men and machines (Iron Eagle, RoboCop), and the ocean (Big Wednesday, The Blue Lagoon). For the opening titles, Poledouris invented his own "Russian folk" song, one from which the thematic material for the rest of the score is drawn.” Although much of Poledouris’ score consists of short, subdued cues, which mix orchestra and electronics, a few stand-out sequences gave Poledouris the opportunity to bring his full orchestral and choral forces to bear - depicting underwater navigation with a musical sense of wonder, adapting the choral material with a more menacing quality and a lengthy, pivotal sequence in which a a nuclear accident is faked.
