Back Lot Music: "MA" music by Gregory Tripi

Back Lot Music is excited to announce the upcoming release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Ma, the new thriller from Universal Pictures, directed by Tate Taylor (The Girl on the Train, The Help) with music by award-winning composer Gregory Tripi (The Fix, Rememory).  The album will be released digitally on May 24, 2019 and will feature the entire pulse-pounding original score from the feature film.  A vinyl version of the album will be released on Mondo later this summer.

Gregory Tripi wanted the score for Ma to evolve and change with the main character, Sue Ann (Oscar winner Octavia Spencer), as her character becomes increasingly unhinged and dangerous. The score is primarily electronic throughout, except for one key scene in which Tripi used a bassoon.  “I played bassoon when I was growing up and had a strange urge out of nowhere to buy one last year,” he says. “So, I went on Craigslist and found one. It’d been about 20 years since I’ve picked it up, but muscle memory came back fast, so I recorded a bunch of long, textured notes with it. They’re featured in the score quite a bit.”

For Ma’s main theme, Tripi employed two versions to represent Sue Ann’s past and her present. “We have the younger version of Sue Ann during flashbacks in school,” he says. “This was a more innocent time. To express that, I used a big metal drum called a Halo that plays melodies, which I had a number of thematic notes on. I did them again with piano. Later, I created Ma’s metamorphosis into a very troubled woman. That theme was always going to be a much more kinky, disturbing, well-paced melody.”

Tripi created a pallet of unexpected sounds for Ma. “There were a lot of glassy instruments in the score, as well as a number of analog synthesizers, a metal Halo drum and a few things that contrasted: a live cello, a voice in a few cues, then basically tearing it all apart at the end,” he says. “I also used pitched wine glasses, ones that when you rub them make long glassy tones. It’s a good organic vibe to have without feeling too recognizable. I also bought a ukulele in Hawaii that’s made from a used Japanese Bento box. You’d never recognize it as such because it sounds so big and textured.”

Varese Sarabande: "THE SON" music by Nathan Barr

Based off of Philipp Meyer’s best-selling novel of the same name, the soundtrack to The Son,  the Pierce Brosnan-led Western drama on AMC is finally available for purchase digitally on April 26th and on CD May 17th.  The album is composed by Nathan Barr, and features three original vocal performances, including one from Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top.  The Son can be purchased on Varesesarabande.com.

Nathan Barr is a unique breed of composer. In addition to writing his scores, he also performs all of the instruments heard in many of his compositions. Skilled in many styles and genres, ranging from orchestral to rock, Barr is known for his collection and inclusion of rare and unusual instruments from around the world, such as human bone trumpets from Tibet, dismantled pianos, a rare Glass Armonica and gourd cellos, among many others.

“…the composer (Barr) proposed a unique blend of instrumentation that would highlight the characters’ emotional journey [in The Son] as well as outline the raw quality of DP George Steel’s cinematography… Barr joined members of the sound department to match the music with the sound design and effects like gunfire and the pattering of horses’ hooves. The score aims to highlight character arcs and accompanies between 20 to 30 minutes of action per episode, from subtle cues to bombastic melodies.” – Marj Galas, Variety.

Pierce Brosnan stars as charismatic Texas rancher Eli McCullough in, "The Son," a sweeping family saga on AMC.  Focusing on Eli's transformation from hard-working family man to paranoid, calculating killer, Eli is desperate to ensure his legacy by building a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth. Intrada: "LAWMAN" [1971] (Re-Issue) Music by Jerry Fielding

Intrada's latest release revisits one of Jerry Fielding's classic western scores – the 1971 United Artists film Lawman. Fielding's score avoids the customary western trappings, featuring a main theme that combines the scope of the great frontier with brooding intensity. Shifting between minor and major, his theme underlines the singular, unyielding pursuit by Burt Lancaster as the "Lawman" in bringing several men to justice. Reflective moments are sensitive, counterbalancing the fierce and violent action scenes. Capping the score is a powerful finish with trumpets ascending into the stratosphere.
Presented in crystal clear stereo from newly located original master elements, the release offers a different program from the previous Intrada release. In the '70s Fielding had been frustrated at the lack of interest by record companies in his music, so he had approved a 2-LP set featuring suites from four of his scores, including Lawman. This suite was used as the base for the original Intrada album, with new material added in to supplement the suite. With this new release the entire score has been remastered, and working with the unedited original cues, the score has been put in film order as is customary with most Intrada albums.

In the film, Burt Lancaster plays Sheriff Jered Maddox, a rude and arrogant fellow if there ever was one. Maddox enters a neighboring town searching for the men responsible for an accidental death. But even with justice on his side, his manner turns the town against him, and the town boss sends a series of henchman to do away with Maddox – one after another. Directed by Michael Winner, Lawman also features Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, and Robert Duvall.

Sony Music: "THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR" music by Herdís Stefánsdóttir

Sony Music announces the release of THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by Icelandic composer HERDÍS STEFÁNSDÓTTIR.  Available Friday, May 10, the soundtrack features music from the Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film, which will be released nationwide on Friday, May 17.

“Working with Ry on creating the score for The Sun Is Also A Star was a wonderful and smooth process,” says composer Herdís Stefánsdóttir of the soundtrack. “I immediately felt we had a musical connection, which helped create the themes for the film.  I was 7 months pregnant when I started writing the score and that made the experience very special for me. I was extra emotional and focused because of my situation, which I felt helped me overall in the creative process, and was able to write the music quickly and felt inspired by the story. I needed to write music that would evolve and mature with the characters in the film and the growing feeling of love. I mostly used a mix of ukulele, harp, electronics, flutes, strings and piano. The score was lighter in the beginning of the film, but as the drama progresses I brought in deeper sounds and more emotional instruments like the piano, cello and harp.”

In the film, college-bound romantic Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi) meet – and fall for each other – over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City.  Sparks immediately fly between these two strangers, who might never have met had fate not given them a little push.  But will fate be enough to take these teens from star-crossed to lucky in love?  With just hours left on the clock in what looks to be her last day in the U.S., Natasha is fighting against her family’s deportation as fiercely as she’s fighting her budding feelings for Daniel, who is working just as hard to convince her they are destined to be together.  A modern-day story about finding love against all odds, The Sun Is Also a Star explores whether our lives are determined by fate or the random events of the universe.

ABOUT HERDÍS STEFÁNSDÓTTIR... Herdís Stefánsdóttir is a composer of music for multimedia, a songwriter, and an electronic musician. Her compositional endeavors – installations in museums, dance, theatre, and a successful electronic music duet she is a part of – are establishing her as an expansive artist.

Herdís Stefánsdóttir graduated with a M.A. degree in film scoring from New York University in 2017. Since graduation, she has scored two American feature films and a few short films. Herdís interned for the Oscar-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson in Berlin while he was working on the film Arrival (2016), and she has scored numerous short films that have premiered at top-tier festivals around the world like Berlinale, TIFF, Sundance and Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Herdís formed East of My Youth, her electro-pop duet, in 2015. East of My Youth’s music has been described as “as sensual and addictive as getting your tongue frozen to a glacier of pure honey (jajaja music).” The duo has showcased at SxSW, Eurosonic Noorderslag, KEXP, Sonar Reykjavík and Iceland Airwaves.

Sony Music: "BRIGHTBURN" music by Timothy Williams

Sony Music announces the release of BRIGHTBURN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by multi-award winning composer TIMOTHY WILLIAMS (Wild Horses, Debug, Walking with the Enemy).  Available Friday, May 10, the soundtrack features music from the James Gunn and Kenneth Huang-produced film, which makes its theatrical debut in the United States on Friday, May 24.

Of the soundtrack, composer TIMOTHY WILLIAMS says, “Being able to merge two genres which have never been combined before, superhero and horror, was an amazing experience.  I was thankful for a close collaborative relationship with the director Dave Yarovesky.  We worked on the idea of a main theme at the beginning that would be simple and reflect the emotional investment of hope in the story.  You hear this in a three note piano solo theme.  As Brandon's power increases, we begin to feel the weight and power of a large orchestra which then bends and distorts with Brandon's descent into evil.  The low strings and low brass mutate the theme and processed percussion pumps up the tension.  Because Brandon is this kid from another world, I got to develop some unique sounds using a bespoke library for the ROLI which bends and pitches sound as well.  Overall it was a dream come true to create this sound for a new genre film.”
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to humankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? In this horrific take on the classic superhero trope, a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) adopts a baby who came from the stars. While they attempt to raise the boy (Jackson A. Dunn) to use his powers for good, an evil begins to grow inside that he unleashes.

ABOUT TIMOTHY WILLIAMS... Timothy Williams is a multi-award winning composer, orchestrator and conductor for film and television, whose awards include the MPSE Golden Reel Award and Hollywood Music in Media Award for best score.

Highlights include scoring Robert Duvall's, Wild Horses (Robert Duvall, Josh Hartnett and James Franco), John Moore's I.T. which starred Pierce Brosnan, I'm Not Ashamed, Diablo (starring Scott Eastwood and Walton Goggins), which won the jury award at the San Diego Film Festival and Walking With The Enemy, staring Ben Kingsley. Recent works include Secret of Pirate Island for Sony, Butterfly Circus, Beyond All Boundaries and Get Out!

Tim's scores have been released on multiple soundtrack albums. Varese Sarabande released the score for Get Out!, Lakeshore records released the soundtracks for I'm Not Ashamed, I.T., Wild Horses, Debug, Walking With The Enemy and Red Sky.

Diablo was listed in the best scores of 2016. Red Sky was nominated for "best soundtrack" at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Debug was listed among the best of 2015. Walking With The Enemy was listed among the best scores of 2014 and made the Oscars-eligible score list.

INNI: "Reykjavík Stories" music by Atli Örvarsson

Award winning composer Atli Örvarsson released his new album, Reykjavík Stories, which is available via Spotify, iTunes and Amazon. The 12-track album is a collection of pieces Atli has scored for the Scandinavian indie films ‘In Front of Others’ and ‘The Homecoming’. The touching and moving music tells stories of love, relationships, betrayal, human fallacy and the human condition in general, which happen to take place in Reykjavík.

“There's something uniquely Icelandic about the music, with a tinge of a Mediterranean sound thrown in for good measure. Which is quite fitting as the Icelandic nation, deprived of warmth and sunshine, has always set its gaze towards the exotic south in search of a sunny Utopia.” - Atli Örvarsson

Atli Örvarsson is an Icelandic composer for film and television. He scored the award-winning feature ‘Rams’ (Hrútar), winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival, which featured “a wonderful minimalist score [that] lends a mournful solemnity to the [film]” – The Guardian.

Growing up in the small town of Akureyri, Iceland, music was always present for composer Atli Örvarsson. He went on to study at the Berklee College of Music, where he fell in love with the alchemy of writing music for picture. Atli wrote music for the NBC series ‘Chicago Fire’, ‘Chicago PD.’ and ‘Chicago Med.’ In addition to these hit shows, his recent scores include ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’, starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, ‘The Edge of Seventeen’, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson, and the animated feature film ‘Bilal: A New Breed of Hero’, starring Ian McShane.

Varese Sarabande: "GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH" Music by Jerry Goldsmith 2LP-SET!

Continuing the celebration of what would have been Jerry Goldsmith’s 90th year, Varèse Sarabande Records is thrilled to present Goldsmith’s brilliant and manic score for Gremlins 2: The New Batch.  This 2 LP set, which is housed in a gatefold jacket, includes extensive liner notes from Robert Townson and a note from director Joe Dante.  The CD version of this Deluxe Edition sold out upon release in 2015 and the LP set will be limited to 750 units, available today exclusively on VareseSarabande.com.  This is sure to be an ideal collector’s item for any movie fanatic as Goldsmith’s out of print scores tend to increase in value drastically.

JERRY GOLDSMITH... Born on February 10, 1929, Jerry Goldsmith studied piano with Jakob Gimpel and composition, theory, and counterpoint with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He also attended classes in film composition given by Miklós Rózsa at the Univeristy of Southern California. In 1950, he was employed as a clerk typist in the music department at CBS. There, he was given his first embryonic assignments as a composer for radio shows such as Romance and CBS Radio Workshop. He stayed with CBS until 1960, having already scored The Twilight Zone. An experimentalist, Goldsmith constantly pushed forward the bounds of film music: Planet of the Apes included horns blown without mouthpieces and a bass clarinetist fingering the notes but not blowing. He was unafraid to use the wide variety of electronic sounds and instruments which had become available, although he did not use them for their own sake.

He received 17 Oscar nominations but won only once, for The Omen in 1977. He enjoyed giving concerts of his music and performed all over the world, notably in London, where he built up a strong relationship with London Symphony Orchestra.

GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH... A few years after the incident in Gremlins (1984), Billy and Kate have moved to New York City where they work for media mogul Daniel Clamp. Meanwhile, Gizmo's former owner has just died, and he's been captured for the genetics part of the Clamp building. A little while later, a certain someone gets wet, creates a new Gremlin species, and learns to finally fight back after years of abuse, and while Gizmo and the surviving humans fight back, the Gremlins and their evil leader, the Brain Gremlin, are planning to escape when it gets dark, and if they do, New York City will experience a new Hell.

Notefornote Music: "Pumpkinhead" Music by Richard Stone... Hurry it's a limited run of 666!

In the prologue set in 1957, Tom Harley waits inside his farm cabin with his wife and young son, Ed. A doomed man seeks sanctuary at Tom's cabin, but Tom refuses and threatens to shoot him if he does not leave. Watching through a window, Ed witnesses the man caught and killed by a grotesque monster.  In the present, Ed Harley owns a small store in the country. He briefly leaves his young son alone while he runs an errand. A group of teenage campers stop by Harley's, and, while riding their dirt bikes, they mortally injure Harley's son. One teen, Steve, stays with the boy until his father's return; the rest flee the scene. At their cabin, the campers fight about whether or not to call the police. Joel, who is personally responsible for the boy's injury and is on probation for a similar incident, rips out the phone cord, knocks one of his friends unconscious and locks him and another girl in the closet to stop them from contacting the authorities.

Richard Stone (1953 –2001) was an American composer.  He went on to write music for various feature films and television series including the Bruce Campbell western Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, Pumpkinhead, North Shore, and the miniseries In a Child's Name. Stone worked on John Hughes films including Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles (both scored by Ira Newborn).

Well, there always a couple great score releases that make you squeal and today we have one you gotta get before the "short run" of 666 is gone. Pumpkinhead is a 1988 American horror film. It was the directorial debut of special effects artist Stan Winston and is considered a cult classic.  Originally released for the first time as part of Varese Sarabande's "Little Box Of Horrors" set and is being reissued by Notefornote Music, for the fans who missed out on the above set.

Musically it takes you to the front of the backwoods, where you get thrown into a rustic twang that slowly turns to darkness. Richard Stone drags you into the woods giving a traditional 80's feel from many horror-styled films of that era. Slowly like I said, it turns on you and you find the music changes and it's a nice treat for sure. So get this, before someone resurrects the "Punkn'head on you.

Additionally, in support of the forthcoming documentary, Waveshaper Media have produced a compilation LP of Moog recordings from the 1960s called Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969. It contains tracks by Robert Arthur Moog, Herbert Deutsch, Joel Chadabe, Lothar and the Hand People, Intersystems, Ruth White, Max Brand, and Paul Earls. All of these tracks, set for a vinyl release of 1000 copies on June 14th, have been scarcely heard and difficult to track down, with all but three of them previously unreleased on vinyl. The album, including a white vinyl edition limited to 300 copies, is available via pre-order through Waveshaper's Indiegogo campaign for the film.

Bypassing the Moog synthesizer’s backseat appearance on key pop recordings by the likes of the Beatles, the Doors, and the Beach Boys, Electronic Voyages aims to highlight the diverse approach of 1960s musicians and composers who adopted the Moog as their primary instrument; these recordings all feature the Moog synthesizer front and centre. Beginning with an “audio letter” (The Abominatron) from Bob Moog to his musician-muse Herbert Deutsch, demonstrating some of the first Moog synthesizer prototype’s capabilities, Electronic Voyages veers from avant-garde and electronic soundscapes, to psychedelic madness and summer-of-love pop. In the 1960s, the Moog synthesizer was a new, groundbreaking instrument, and its use was completely uncharted territory. The pioneering use of the Moog on all of these recordings sounds fresh today - you can sense the wide-eyed exploratory delight unfolding, and the disparate results range from endearingly naive (Lothar and the Hand People, Paul Earls) to downright eerie (Ruth White, Intersystems).

The musicians and composers behind these Electronic Voyages may have been among the first to adopt Moog synthesizers, but the fact that they so readily found within them expressivity, heart, and a means to translate their wondrous sense of discovery, speaks far more to Bob Moog’s visionary invention and enduring legacy.

Ryan Blotnick (composer, co-producer, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion, b 1983) is a New England-based composer and improviser who creates ambient score music for documentary films, and specializes in jazz, avant-garde, and afrobeat guitar. As a film composer he taps into a wide range of sounds from the underground music scene - backwards guitars, analog synths, and edgy strings - to create compelling scores that lend an authentic feel and emotional depth to documentaries. He shaped his sound alongside his brother’s energetic docs including Gods and Kings (2011), and The Hand that Feeds (2014), which won the Audience Awards at both Full Frame and DOC NYC. His most recent score for Knock Down the House (Netflix, 2019) helped earn it the Festival Favorite Award at Sundance Film Festival.

Milan Records: "Stockholm" music by Steve London

Stockholm is a 2018 American crime film written, produced and directed by Robert Budreau. It stars Ethan Hawke, Noomi Rapace, Mark Strong, Christopher Heyerdahl, Bea Santos and Thorbjorn Harr.[1] The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19, 2018 and was released on April 12, 2019 by Smith Global Media.  The film is based on the true story of the 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm.

Steve London: Originally an orchestral musician, Steve studied composition and conducting with Canada¹s music elite: John Burge, Marjan Mozetich and Kristi Allik. In 1995, he received a certificate of specialization from the world renowned 'Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television' program at the University of Southern California. The opportunity to study in L.A. with such composers as Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith and Christopher Young, was invaluable and integral to his development as a serious composer for film and television. He also gained a great deal of experience working as a score co-ordinator with Christopher Young on such films as 'Unforgetable' (MGM), 'Head Above Water' (New Line Cinema), and 'Copycat' (Warner Bros.).

Mr. London now lives and works in both Los Angeles and Toronto. He records regularly with European orchestras as a composer for the Munich-based SONOTON music library and has also written music for many feature films including: 'That Beautiful Somewhere' starring Roy Dupuis and Jane MacGregor, 'Seduced By A Thief', starring Sean Young and Ron Perlman, and 'Shallow Ground' (Universal).

Lakeshore Records: "Les Misérables" music by John Murphy

Lakeshore Records is set to release the original soundtrack to the critically-acclaimed BBC/PBS Masterpiece limited series Les Misérables, written by composer John Murphy (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Kick-Ass). The album will be released digitally on May 3rd with CD and vinyl versions forthcoming.

Series director Tom Shankland wanted John to tell a fresh musical story and to ultimately create a raw and uncompromising score to reflect the trials and misery of “Les Misérables.” John described the scoring process as an experimental journey: “My original idea for the score to Les Mis was '1816 Velvet Underground meets 60s French film music.' Tom [Shankland] was thinking 'gnarly, down in the dirt, French folk music.' Producer Chris Carey suggested, ‘let’s try both, but throw in some vintage analog synths.' I then gleefully tried all of these elements, often at the same time. And we discovered that you can actually mix a hurdy gurdy with a Moog Sub Phatty, and we loved it. And what started out as a musical standoff, became our score for Les Misérables.”

About John Murphy: Liverpool born John Murphy began scoring movies at the age of 25. In 2001, following the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, he moved to Los Angeles.

Since then he has worked with some of the industry’s most respected and luminary filmmakers, including Danny Boyle, Guy Ritchie, Stephen Frears, Matthew Vaughn and Michael Mann, producing film scores as prominent and diverse as Sunshine, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Miami Vice, Snatch, Kick-Ass, and the seminal 28 Days Later.

His movie trailers include Captain America: Winter Soldier, Gravity, X-Men: Origins, Cloverfield, War of the Worlds, Cowboys and Aliens, Blindness, Ex Machina, Southpaw, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Avatar. His music has been featured in advertising campaigns for Nike, Audi, Microsoft, Louis Vuitton, Samsung, Google, and Apple.

After Kick-Ass, Murphy set up the record label Taped Noise and began work on several non-movie projects. His latest project, BBC’s Les Misérables, premiered in the U.S. on April 14th on PBS Masterpiece.

Milan Records: "HOSTILE PLANET" music by Benjamin Wallfisch

HOSTILE PLANET is a ground-breaking wildlife series that explores Earth's most hostile environments. Over the course of six episodes, we explore the extremes of deep, high, cold, hot, wet and dry and reveal the truly extraordinary ways in which animals have adapted to survive in the face of great adversity. It's always been a HOSTILE PLANET and yet, in the last 40 years, it's got a whole lot tougher for the wildlife. The world has changed more in the last 40 years than at any time in the last 65 million. So animals in the most hostile places on Earth must adapt in the blink of an evolutionary eye. Facing everything from intrinsically hostile habitats and brutally punishing weather to the unrelenting threat of predators and intense competition for resources, their challenge is simple: adapt or die.

Benjamin Wallfisch: In recent years, Benjamin has also scored Gore Verbinski's A CURE FOR WELLNESS, the Steven Spielberg produced short film AUSCHWITZ, directed by James Moll, KING OF THIEVES, starring Michael Caine and directed by James Marsh; and Steven Knight's SERENITY, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. He also recently completed scoring HOSTILE PLANET, a six part series for National Geographic.

With over 25 albums of his music released to date on labels including Deutsche Grammophon and Epic Records, Benjamin has performed live in over 100 concerts worldwide, leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony at venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House and Royal Festival Hall. He has collaborated, recorded and performed his music with artists including Lang Lang, Herbie Hancock and Yuja Wang, and has over 50 concert music commissions to his name.

MovieScore Media "INERNEMNT" music by Henrik Åström

MovieScore Media has another country to add to its always growing list of new territories whose film music is to be explored - this time it’s Albania with the movie Internment. Written and directed by Kast Hasa, the ambitious historical tableau tess the story of three generations of an Albanian family’s struggle to survive their totalitarian regime when a friend returning from America is mistaken for a spy. The story of love, family and cold war espionage is told through the story of 18-year old Frida, her rebellious love Artur and their powerful relations which must overcome the tragedy of the boy and his whole family’s internment. The digital release of the score co-incides with the world premiere of the film at the Arizona International Film Festival.

“The music is very sparse in the first half of movie but is eventually allowed to bloom out and almost become a character of its own towards the end,” says composer Henrik Åström  about his involvement in the Albanian movie. “There is a love theme between Frida and Artur that develops into a larger theme representing the strengths and struggles of the Albanian people during the communist era. Instead of closely following the suspense on screen, I chose to use a combination of solo flutes, bassoons and guitars to give a voice to the inner thoughts of the characters.”

Swedish composer Henrik Åström studied music at the Stockholm Music Conservatory and later at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has recently scored the hit TV show Make Your Mark for APT, written additional music for the hugely popular Dishonored video game franchise, and worked with Heitor Pereira on the animated blockbuster film Angry Birds. His score for Dude, Where’s My Ferret? won a Goldie Award for Best Musical Score in 2016. His Current projects include Internment, an epic Albanian/American period piece drama, the upcoming feature film Eyes Upon Waking by Jennifer Scott and the action/drama Mango Bajito that stars legendary actor Danny Trejo.

MovieScore Media: "HACKER" music by Uno Helmersson

MovieScore Media gets tangled up in the world of high-tech espionage with the Danish tech thriller Hacker, scored by composer Uno Helmersson (Magnus, The Lion Woman). Co-written and directed by Poul Berg, the film follows thirteen-year-old Benjamin (Rumle Kærså), who discovers that his mother didn't die in an accident as he was led to believe. The trail points to high-ranking officials in the Danish Secret Service, and he is told to trust no one as he starts his perilous journey to find out the truth. The film builds upon Poul Berg’s experience for scripted children and teen programming - now mixed up with the world of Jason Bourne.

”The score made for Hacker is really a non-stop music escapé,” explains Uno Helmersson. ”It follows Benjamin, the main character, being hunted, trying to find his mom and never knowing who he can trust. The punch line for this film was ”a Bourne Identity for kids”. So the music travels between huning action and emotional movements. It was intense and great fun scoring this film.” The high-energy action cues recall John Powell’s trend-setting music for contemporary action thrillers, but there are also moments of great warmth and empathy when it comes to depicting Benjamin’s relationship with his mother.

Uno Helmersson was born in the village of Botsmark in Sweden in 1977. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm in 2006 and has since then worked as composer in the international film and television industry. His credits include contributions to the score of the highly acclaimed television series The Bridge and Armadillo, a multiple award-winning documentary about the war in Afghanistan. More recently his work was featured in the Department Q films The Keeper of Lost Causes and The Absent One – these collaborations with Johan Söderqvist and Patrik Andrén have been released by MovieScore Media. His latest releases with the label include the chess documentary Magnus (2016), the romantic drama The Lion Woman (2017) and the documentary EP Bobbi Jene (2017).

Sony Music: "POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU" music by Henry Jackman

Sony Music announces the release of POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by award-winning composer HENRY JACKMAN, whose scoring credits include Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: First Class, Monsters vs. Aliens and more.  Available Friday, May 3, the soundtrack features music from the exciting first-ever live-action Pokémon adventure, with Ryan Reynolds leading an all-star cast as the unique crime-solving Detective Pikachu. From Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Entertainment, and The Pokémon Company, POKÉMON Detective Pikachu makes its theatrical debut Friday, May 10.

Of the soundtrack, composer HENRY JACKMAN says: “Writing the music for POKÉMON Detective Pikachu was immense fun.  The movie itself was a unique invitation to create a new musical world representing all the wonderful and colorful characters of the Pokémon  universe.  I really enjoyed using many different sonic colors so, if you listen carefully, you can hear everything from the full symphony orchestra to analog vintage synths.  I was also very happy to be working again with Rob Letterman, who even tried to get his beloved 808 Drum Machine into the score, until we found it was fatally damaged.  To have been selected to write music for such a well-loved and precious franchise is a great honor, and I greatly hope my best efforts contribute positively to the Pokémon experience.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present, in association with Toho Co., Ltd. POKÉMON Detective Pikachu, a Legendary Pictures production and a Rob Letterman film.  The film will be distributed outside of Japan and China by Warner Bros. Pictures, in Japan by Toho Co., Ltd. and by Legendary East in China.

Sony Music: "THE HUSTLE" music by Anne Dudley

Sony Music announces the release of THE HUSTLE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by composer ANNE DUDLEY (The Full Monty, American History X, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again).  The soundtrack will be available everywhere both digitally and physically Friday, May 3. Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures will release THE HUSTLE starring Academy Award® winner Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson through the United Artists Releasing banner in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 10.

“THE HUSTLE is based on one of my favorite films Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and, in a nod to this, my score takes as its starting point the music of The Hot Club of France,” says composer ANNE DUDLEY of the soundtrack.  “I’ve always found this sound both irrepressibly happy and somehow a bit louche. The driving energy of the guitar rhythms coupled with some sophisticated harmonies represent the contrasting characters of Penny (Rebel Wilson) and Josephine (Anne Hathaway), without the score having to be overbearingly ‘comic.’

It was a particular delight to work with some of my favorite musicians – especially John Parricelli on guitar, Chris Garrick on violin and Eddie Hession on accordion. It was also a pleasure to work with Chris Addison, the director who was full of good cheer, and musically incredibly literate.”

In the hilarious new comedy THE HUSTLE, Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.

THE HUSTLE is directed by Emmy Award®-winner Chris Addison (Veep) from a screenplay by Jac Schaeffer. Cave 76’s Roger Birnbaum and Rebel Wilson’s CAMP SUGAR produced the film. Ilona Herzberg and Alison Owen serve as executive producers.

Sony Music: "TOLKIEN" music by Thomas Newman

Sony Music announces the release of TOLKIEN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by GRAMMY®, EMMY® and BAFTA® Award-winning composer THOMAS NEWMAN, whose scoring credits include American Beauty, Six Feet Under, Skyfall, Finding Nemo and more.  Available Friday, May 3, the soundtrack features music from Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien, which makes its theatrical debut Friday, May 10.

Of the soundtrack, composer THOMAS NEWMAN says: “Because J.R.R. Tolkien is embedded in popular culture, and because his work and outlook have been the subjects of much interpretation, I wanted to write music for Tolkien that would honor his ethos, his individualism, without being slavish to it. The musical vocabulary draws from a wide swath of instrumental and vocal colors, from winds with string accompaniment to solo voice in hushed pianissimo. There is Swedish kantélé, mandolin and monochord intersecting bell rhythms and piano-derived ambiences. The object is to give musical identity to the nascent feelings of the young storyteller from Birmingham, only just beginning to stretch his wings. And because much of the story is seen through the prism of his time spent in the trenches of World War I, there is that parallel experience of epic conflict that deepens my feeling for his language and, I hope, lets sound, noise, and melody rise up and sing.”

Directed by Dome Karukoski and written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien explores the formative years of the renowned author’s life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels. The film stars Nicholas Hoult as J.R.R. Tolkien with Lily Collins as his future wife and muse Edith. The film also stars Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Derek Jacobi, Harry Gilby, Adam Bregman, Albie Marber, Ty Tennant, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O’Reilly and Pam Ferris. Tolkien is produced by Peter Chernin, p.g.a., Jenno Topping, p.g.a., David Ready, p.g.a., and Kris Thykier

Intrada: "BACKDRAFT 2" music by Randy Edelman

In 1991, director Ron Howard released his ode to firefighters everywhere – Backdraft – a film about two Chicago firefighter brothers who don't get along, but are forced to work together while an arsonist is on the loose wreaking havoc. Kurt Russell and William Baldwin played the brothers, supported by an impressive cast that included Robert DeNiro, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Scott Glenn. The original film also sported a spirited early score from composer Hans Zimmer. Now 28 years later, Universal Pictures presents a sequel – Backdraft 2.

William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland reprise their roles from the original, adding Joe Anderson and Alastair Mackenzie to the cast with Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego directing. This time around, an investigator with the Chicago Fire Department is tracking down an arms dealer who is responsible for using deadly fires as a distraction. Also along for the ride this time is veteran composer Randy Edelman (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Dragonheart, Angels in the Outfield). Incorporating some of Zimmer's style from the first score, Edelman crafts his own path in this sequel, performing the recording as well. The score opens with a beautiful, heart-aching cello solo and then moves into a more atmospheric vein to set the stage for the nefarious story that unfolds. Keyboard is featured prominently, whether carrying a melancholy melody or providing tense rhythms. But the score centers around a heroic theme for the protagonists. Moody, suspenseful, heroic, uplifting, terrifying – it's all here in this dynamic score.

This Intrada release features just over an hour of Edelman's elegant score, courtesy of Universal Pictures.
