Just like THE EWOK ADVENTURE and EWOKS: THE BATTLE FOR ENDOR, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is a stand alone film that takes place in the STAR WARS universe only without Ewoks. The film is about Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) being recruited by the Rebellion to locate her father who was taken from her when she was a child to work on weaponizing the Death Star. Eventually this quest leads her and some new allies on the path to steal the plans for the Death Star and get them to the Rebellion. The story is serviced by a forgettable music score, some breath-taking visuals and horrible horrible fan service. If you like STAR WARS for it's explosions, lazers and spaceships then ROGUE ONE is the greatest movie of them all. If you like STAR WARS for its endearing timeless story and memorable characters then you will be disappointed.
When I first saw the trailer for ROGUE ONE I was immediately impressed by the character of Jyn Erso. The trailer portrays her as a Snake Plissken type character. My favorite line from the trailer is when she says "This is a rebellion, isn't it? I rebel." That's a great line. Unfortunately that line was cut out as well as any other possible scene or moment that would make her a strong or even memorable character. Instead she comes across as a scared little girl forced into a situation she never would have put herself in. Yeah, the film makes it a point to show her beat up a bunch of storm troopers but that doesn't make her a strong character. She is just an action figure. Jyn has no good moments. She gives a couple of speeches that come across as out of step with her character. Jyn is a non-character in her own story. She has not earned the right to be the biggest character on the movie poster. She never really seems to be a part of the Rebellion even though she has experienced personal loss at the hands of the Empire. You would think she would have been in the Rebellion from day one. I'm not even sure what she was doing before being rescued/captured by the Rebellion and setting her on the mission to find her father. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!!!

This is the last issue of the year, it's been a long year... some of
you might know I ended up in the hospital twice with Pneumonia and
having my Gallbladder removed. Both times I waited to go to the
hospital, for that reason both were serious adventures. My attention to
SIX STRINGS became my only priority and sadly lost many of my internet
friends, well not lost... just moved around.
With this issue I would love if you are reading this, please share it
I would like to end this year with a bang, I know I am asking a lot...
but I do that. :)
Tonino Valerii has directed about five Spaghetti Westerns in his day. DAY OF ANGER aka GUNLAW is probably his best with the help of the two main stars Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma. His most famous is MY NAME IS NOBODY which stars Henry Fonda and Terence Hill and may have been co-directed by Sergio Leone. It is terrible and boring. The ending is good but it belongs in a better film. The movie as a whole is bad which is why I find it strange that so many critics familiar with Italian Westerns would often have it ranked somewhere in their top ten lists. I guess they need to see more Spaghetti Westerns. If they had then maybe they would have seen the far more satisfying A TASTE OF KILLING.
The film stars Craig Hill (A sort of cross between Eastwood and Bronson) as Lanky, a bounty hunter who has been tasked to protect a shipment of gold locked in the town's bank vault from a small army of bandits. The leader of the bandits, Gus Kennebeck (George Martin) also just happens to be the man who killed Lanky's brother back in the day. Time for some payback, right? Well sort of. Lanky may not be the hero we have been so accustomed to in other Westerns from Italy. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!
SHOOT FIRST, DIE LATER sounds more like a title for a Spaghetti Western than a modern day Eurocrime. I'm sure this film has many different titles and translations depending on what market of the world it was distributed to. Director Fernando Di Leo has made an excellent entry into the genre. The first thirty minutes or so I wasn't very impressed. The film is kind of ordinary in it's initial appearance. Most likely the film was quickly shot. There isn't any well thought out creative camera angles and compositions to make the film any different from all the other hastily made Dirty Harry knock offs from seventies Italy. I can't even remember the music. However, if you wait you will be rewarded with a simple but very compelling story about the consequences of police corruption. Its the story that makes SHOOT FIRST worth a watch. The ending is great too which I will be spoiling completely in this review because I love it!
SHOOT FIRST, DIE LATER opens with a large bow tied mafia boss named Pascal having a bunch of local drug dealers shot in the legs for doing business behind his back. Later an eccentric old man tries to leave his house to get milk for his cat but his gate has been blocked by a couple of cars to where he can't get out. This prompts the old man to file a police report. Meanwhile police officer, Domenico (Luc Merenda) busts some gun runners. After being glorified for the bust Domenico gets word to show up to a meeting. That meeting ends up being with Pascal. Domenico is actually working for the mob! They inform Domenico that there was a report filed involving the parked cars that links Pascal to a recent murder. Domenico is to get rid of that report. The problem is that with the escalation of the murder investigation everyone involved with filing that report is now a witness and Domenico knows it. The police officer who wrote down and filed that report just happens to be Domenico's father. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!!!

In 2016 Hollywood Action House began developing "Boogeyman Chronicles," a series of eight 45-minute episodes. The first episode is currently in post-production and the series will start airing on Halloween 2018 world-wide. It is inspired by Ulli Lommel's 1980 cult hit "The Boogeyman." The new story line was developed after test audiences in the U.S. and Europe saw various cuts of a series of plot-possibilities and characters entitled "Boogeyman Reincarnation." The writing team headed by Colin McCracken is currently working on episodes 2 - 8 with the plan to create a total of up to 64 episodes. Lommel has indicated that, even though he directed episode 1, most of the remaining episodes will be directed by a series of young directors from the U.S, Europe and Asia. Starring in episode 1 are Skylar Radzion, Laurence R. Harvey, Andreea Boyer and Tristan Risk. It was produced by Frank Dragun, Ulli Lommel and David Bond.

I have to admit that I didn't expect a lot from DOCTOR STRANGE. ANOTHER ORIGIN STORY?!!! Is it really necessary to do another story about the beginnings of another super hero? I know next to nothing about Doctor Strange but I don't feel the need to have my hand held and explained how he came to be even with all the magic mumbo-jumbo. I have seen enough to know how this whole super hero thing works. The whole movie looked like it was going to be some kind of INCEPTION knock-off. Now that I have seen the movie I can say that I was wrong. Not only is DOCTOR STRANGE good, it's one of Marvel's best!
Dr. Strange is one of the best surgeons in the world. He is a man of great arrogance fully aware of how much smarter he is than everyone else around him. Not a bad guy but he has a couple of large character flaws. After a car wreck of his own doing, Strange finds himself no longer able to be a surgeon due to the crippling of his hands. Humbled in body but not in mind, Strange's desperation to get his former life back leads him to look into possible magic remedies. This journey leads him to the discovery that there is real magic in the universe and there are unseen threats that will use magic to bring destruction to our world. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!!!!
When it comes to low budget movies made by people who actually care about film I am very forgiving. Low budget films obviously have more challenges and obstacles to overcome to get made and shown in the public eye. I am a big believer in art through adversity. The challenge and limitations from the lack of money and resources can inspire wonderful results. THE EVIL DEAD is a terrific example of this. I am always looking to low budget films for inspiration since I myself am part of the world of no budget film making. I want more people to know about the good ones and get motivated to support these films and maybe make their own. I am looking for horror movies that are not homages or at least influenced by THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. I like that film but it has been too big of an influence on many horror films in the last 20 years or so. There are so many horror film makers that seek to out shock that classic movie through the on screen suffering of characters that a new genre of horror was created. Torture Porn. You can't count the number of horror movies whose plot summary is about a group of young teens and twenty-somethings who go out to the middle of nowhere and become the victims of a crazed cannibal inbred family of yahoos. I bet there are more movies about crazed cannibal inbred families than there are about Dracula and Frankenstein combined. People looking for new ideas to be inspired by to create new kinds of horror need to limit their intake of such films unless they just like that kind of film. I myself like the WRONG TURN movies for some reason. But if you are looking for something new and different I would recommend THE NEON DEAD.
When Allison discovers a violent ghost in her house she calls Desmond and Jake, an amateur paranormal exterminating duo, to find out what is going on in her house. The investigation leads our two ghost fighters to uncover the bigger problem of an interstellar demon trying to get to earth and destroy all life as we know it. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST.....
I would compare FINAL GIRLS to THE LAST ACTION HERO but that might infer some negative connotations to the film. I can't deny that FINAL GIRLS does have a similar concept of people getting trapped in a movie through the magic of cinema. Instead of getting stuck in JACK SLATER part IV starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, our protagonists find themselves in a slasher flick from the 80's titled CAMP BLOODBATH having to battle a Jason Vorhees type slasher named Billy Murphy. Both are highly imaginative but LAST ACTION falters by being too zany with the concept adding an out of place cartoon cat that is a detective and having that annoying kid from PREHYSTERIA as the lead actor. FINAL GIRLS does a better job with the concept. It manages to stay on the line between between horror and comedy to deliver a sincere heartfelt drama that is surprisingly effective.
Max (The exceptional Taissa Farmiga!) loses her mom (The also exceptional Malin Akerman!) in a car wreck at the beginning of FINAL GIRLS. Her mom was an actress who played one of the doomed counselors in the cult classic CAMP BLOODBATH. Max is talked into going to see her mom's film playing at a nearby movie theater. When a fire breaks out in the theater Max and her friends escape through the movie screen and find themselves in the actual movie. Trapped Max and her friends try to work with the fictional characters to fight off Billy the invincible slasher who gave the camp its notorious name of CAMP BLOODBATH. CLICK HERE TO READ THIS...

I want to use this post to write about my love for BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and use it as a 'Thank You' to Zack Snyder and everyone involved in making one of the greatest super hero films ever. The hate this movie has received is unwarranted and quite perplexing. I thought the theatrical cut was great but the restored true version was perfect and I mean that in all sincerity. The movie delivers a serious story that treats the audience with respect. It doesn't dumb down the plot by adding action beats every ten minutes or comedy at inappropriate times just to appeal to mainstream audiences who view the super hero genre as nothing more than "leave your brain at the door popcorn fare". Thank you, Zack Snyder for this film. Like Superman doing great deeds and still being greeted with fear and hate, you too have given us a great film that has received the same. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I find it so strange that this film and MAN OF STEEL have been held under a higher magnifying glass while other films with more problems are given a pass. See the CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR for example. CIVIL WAR is pretty much the same freaking movie yet receives high positive ratings! Don't get me wrong. I loved CIVIL WAR too but I think BVS was way better. By the way the Ultimate Edition of BVS is what I will be writing about. That is the true intended version of the film. As far as I am concerned the theatrical cut no longer exists.
Essentially BVS is a Man vs. God story. Because of the abuse he had to endure as a child by his father, Lex Luthor (Jessie Eisenberg) has grown into a man who believes that there no such thing as a god who is good. To him people only pretend to be good but deep down inside they are selfish frightened creatures. Superman's existence contradicts Luthor's religion undermining his whole wold view by giving people hope of a better future. Lex sees no such future. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST!!!!
The new GHOSTBUSTERS is not funny or imaginative. You kind of need those two main ingredients for a good Ghostbusters film. The jokes falter due to over reliance on improvisation casting suspicion that there wasn't much of a script to begin with. The jumbled, poorly paced, nearly incoherent story is evidence of that. Worst yet the characters have very little on screen chemistry and provide absolutely no laughs no matter how hard they try. Being a Ghostbusters fan I wanted to love this movie but I couldn't. To put it bluntly this film insults the fans of the old generation while dumbing down the new.
As the film plays before your eyes you can't help but imagine better ways to tell a story about the Ghostbusters. It would be so easy to put out a third film in the franchise and still have the four protagonists be the new all female Ghostbusters. We wanted a sequel. What we got is remake that is suppose to reboot the franchise. Oh, goody! We get the same old story of four friends getting together to form a business about catching ghosts and at the end a big giant thing stomps through the streets of Manhattan. I guess that is the only story that can be told about the Ghostbusters in movie form. They have told this story three times now! If you stay to the end you get a mention of Zuul during a post credits scene. Oh, no! Ghostbusters is a prequel!!! What is the deal with Sony and their reboots? It takes two movies to tell one story that has already been told in a previous film. It took two new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movies to equal the amount of narrative put to screen in the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man. CLICK HERE TO READ THE REST.....

Based on the best-selling novel by John Niven, KILL YOUR FRIENDS debuts June 7 on Blu-ray™ and DVD from Well Go USA Entertainment. Set in 1990s London at the height of the Britpop music scene, KILL YOUR FRIENDS stars Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Mad Max: Fury Road) as a 27-year-old misanthropic A&R executive burning his way through London’s music industry. Fueled by greed and drugs, he’s searching the globe for the next megahit as he freely indulges in an unending orgy of self-gratification. But as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, the only way he’s going to salvage his sagging career is by taking the concept of “cutthroat” to murderous new levels. Bonus materials include interviews with Nicholas Hoult, James Corden, writer John Niven and more.
As the twentieth century breathes its very last, with Britpop at its zenith, twenty-seven-year-old A&R man Steven Stelfox (Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through London’s music industry. Blithely crisscrossing the globe in search of the next megahit—fueled by greed and inhuman quantities of drugs and alcohol—Stelfox freely indulges in an unending orgy of self-gratification. But the industry is changing fast, the hits are drying up, and the only way he’s going to salvage his sagging career is by taking the idea of “cutthroat” to murderous new levels.
Multi-Platinum and Gold Record recording artist, Terry Plumeri, has recently completed his first in a series of four concert DVDs as composer/conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic. Johnterryl Plumeri and The Moscow Philharmonic Live at Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow will be available in the Fall of 2012. His 2009 release of Romance For Clarinet, Strings and Harp - The Chamber Music of Johnterryl Plumeri – Volume I, has garnered, “Hauntingly captivating…A high level of poise, polish and proportion…A sound world of poetic poignancy that casts an enthralling spell!” from Fanfare Magazine
Terry’s 2007 recording of the 4th, 5th and 6th Symphonies of Tchaikovsky as conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic has received such words of praise as “Exquisite sound…Haunting sense of tragedy… Vivid virtuosity…Exquisite balance…Ingenuous grace. Plumeri's Tchaikovsky is fashioned in the grand style of the Russian school. It permits him and his Moscow Philharmonic any number of shining moments." from Audiophile Audition. In regard to Terry's recordings with the Moscow Philharmonic of his original compositions, Fanfare Magazine has said, "These well-prepared composer-conducted performances and recordings are both technically and esthetically stunning. The emotional curve of Plumeri's music has a dramatic inevitability that carries the listener along without questioning and leaves him fully gratified, very much like the best of Tchaikovsky's efforts." The Washington Post has said of these recordings, "Plumeri conducts the Moscow Philharmonic in a performance sensitive to the music's smallest nuances."
Terry's innovative style of bowing jazz solos on the acoustic bass has garnered comments like "Stunning…a very high level of music" from the Washington Post. "Terry Plumeri's bowed bass work is endlessly compelling" from allaboutjazz.com. "Extraordinary bowing facility" from Jazz Improv Magazine. "Extraordinary bowing skill" from Jazzreview.com. In speaking about his latest jazz release Blue In Green, Audiophile Audition has said, “Blue In Green may well be a disc unique in the history of jazz. The sheer virtuosity of Plumeri’s arco bass often astounds.” In speaking of Terry’s recording with pianist Herbie Hancock, allaboutjazz has said, “The landmark release, He Who Lives In Many Places, is nothing short of Magnificent!”
Terry Plumeri began music at the age of 10 and went on to attend The Manhattan School of Music in New York City on scholarship. It was here that Terry studied with Robert Brennand, principal bass of the New York Philharmonic. Later, during his period as a bassist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C., he studied composition and conducting with the Hungarian conductor/composer Antal Dorati, himself a student of the legendary Bela Bartok.
During the past 15 years he has written the music to 57 feature films, which includes the score to the award winning crime story One False Move, which has recently been added to "The New York Times List of the 1000 Best Films Ever Made". His score for One False Move was nominated for, Best Score by the IFP Spirit Awards.
Terry's lectures on music have been heard at the Smithsonian Institute, Georgetown University, Maryland Art Institute and University of Southern California as well as in his private classes in the Los Angeles area on the Vocabulary and Psychology of the Music of Bernard Herrmann in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, Psycho.
Terry has played with such jazz greats as Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Quincy Jones, Arthur Prysock, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Les McCann, Yusef Lateef, John Abercrombie and Woody Herman. Notable performances include Carniegie Hall/New York City, Albert Hall/London, Herodicus Atticus Theater/Athens, Tchaikovsky Hall/Moscow, as well as the Newport, Monterey and Montreux jazz festivals.

About Walker Stalker After a last minute decision to take a trip to Senoia, GA, James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff were given the opportunity to venture on the set of The Walking Dead and meet the actors of the hit television series. The duo became enamored with the show and its subject matter and created a podcast to discuss all things Walking Dead. The topic eventually arose of a convention focused around recreating the very same experience that the cast and crew of the show endure every single day. And thus the concept of Walker Stalker Con was born.
For some strange reason there seems to be profound confusion as to exactly what order you should watch all the STAR WARS movies. Back in the old days this was not a problem. It was simple. You watched STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE followed by its sequel THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK which naturally makes you want to see how this whole space opera ended in RETURN OF THE JEDI. But then came the extremely unnecessary prequels and ruined a whole generation of Star Wars fans who just do not know any better. The scary thing is that several generations are going to still be ruined as long as the nerdos out there insist that the prequels are canon. Potential fans are turned away from the franchise because they started watching the odd and clunky prequels first. I am here to stop that if possible. I will show you the way and hopefully explain why you should watch the movies in this particular order. Get ready for a long, rambling, incoherent rant on this one, folks.
Back with his first film in eight years, award-winning Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (Flight of the Red Balloon, Three Times) wowed this year’s Cannes Film Festival (where he won Best Director) with his awe-inspiring THE ASSASSIN, debuting on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD January 26 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Rich with shimmering, breathing texture and punctuated by brief but unforgettable bursts of action, THE ASSASSIN is a martial arts film like none other. The visually stunning, action-packed film blends tragic historical drama with thrilling swordplay and martial arts in this story of an exiled assassin (Shu Qi, Tai Chi Hero, The Transporter) who must choose between love or duty when she receives orders to kill a man (Chang Chen, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Grandmaster) from her past. With a Certified Fresh rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, THE ASSASSIN also stars Zhou Yun (Let the Bullets Fly) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (The Vancouver Asahi).
In addition to winning Best Director at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, THE ASSASSIN also won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for Composer Giong Lim and was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or. At the 2015 Golden Horse Film Festival, the film was nominated in 10 categories, taking home prizes for Best Director, Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup & Costume Design and Best Sound Effects. THE ASSASSIN is Taiwan’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards®.
BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING [1965] Composed and Conducted by PAUL GLASS
For the 1965 Otto Preminger film Bunny Lake is Missing, composer Paul
Glass not only created a memorable and highly original symphonic score.
Glass worked with general serialism and even strict 12-tone techniques
for his more atonal sections, moving effortlessly between intense
sequences and those with firm tonality. This is showcased best during
the film's climactic sequence, the score’s dramatic highlight, where
Glass melds both aggressive, dissonant ideas and genuine tonality into a
singularly unique and powerful experience lasting nearly six minutes.
In the intense, powerful segments of the score, Glass spares nary a
single instrument in the virtuoso activity. Virtually every player is
called upon to contribute to the violence, be it muted trumpet or
fortissimo trombone, jabbing clarinet or stratospheric piccolo, pounding
snare drum or demented xylophone.

CUJO [1983] Composed and Conducted by CHARLES BERNSTEIN
Charles Bernstein's score to the 1983 film Cujo takes a lyrical
approach, drawing on the intimacy of piano and winds or using a lush
orchestra to create a sympathetic portrait of the Trenton family and
their seaside town. But for all of the bucolic warmth that Bernstein’s
melodies conjure, something is amiss. Bernstein links the unhappy lives
of the Trentons and Cujo’s far less well-off owners, the Cambers.
Percussion often echoes without resolve, adding to the melancholy that
hangs over Cujo well before its terror begins.

From the director of Children of Heaven and starring LEE Byung-hun (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, I Saw the Devil), the lavish epic MEMORIES OF THE SWORD debuts on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD January 12, 2016 from Well Go USA Entertainment. The action-packed film blends tragic historical drama with thrilling swordplay and martial arts. MEMORIES OF THE SWORD also stars JEON Do-yeon (Jibeuro Ganeun Gil), KIM Go-eun (Coin Locker Girl), and LEE Kyeong-yeong (War of the Arrows).
As the greed and excess of a corrupt Monarchy threatens to destroy the once-glorious Goryeo Dynasty, three legendary warriors lead a revolt to overthrow the empire and save its people. But when deceit and betrayal costs the life of a master swordsman, a plot for justice and revenge is set into motion, raging for decades between the two survivors.
Composer Ron Goodwin had previously scored five films for Disney and producer Hugh Attwooll: two for television (Diamonds on Wheels and Born to Run) and three for theaters (One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing, The Littlest Horse Thieves—a.k.a. Escape From the Dark—and Candleshoe). Unidentified Flying Oddball marked his last feature for Disney, and was a fairly light affair, being a family comedy loosely inspired by Mark Twain’s 1889 novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
Goodwin delivered an energetic score that mostly plays the action straight. The greater part of the score is a showcase for the composer’s vivid themes, injecting space-age pluck and dynamism into the film’s cheerfully anachronistic vision of early medieval Cornwall. Most of the score’s themes relate directly to the eponymous oddball spaceman, Tom Trimble. Foremost is a sparkling misterioso motif that opens the film in flute and bells over hushed tremolo strings. As the film moves into more adventurous territory, Goodwin beefs up the orchestration and reworks the motif into a propulsive action setting. Finally, the line is absorbed into a heraldic theme that confirms Tom as the tale’s triumphant hero.
This premiere release of Ron Goodwin’s bright and action-filled score for Disney’s Unidentified Flying Oddball was made possible by the discovery of the original stereo session mixes, surviving on ¼˝ two-track tape. The rolls of tape were in very good condition and included everything that Goodwin recorded for the film, allowing Intrada to present his entire score as intended, including a handful of cues recorded but ultimately not used. The recording features a crisp stereo image, with the profuse action sequences for brass in the latter part of the score being especially vibrant.
Happy-go-lucky NASA scientist Tom Trimble (Dennis Dugan) is tasked with creating an intelligent android to pilot a faster-than-light spacecraft. At the last minute, the android gets cold feet, and Trimble boards the craft and is inadvertently launched into orbit. The pair hurtle through time and wind up in England in the year 508, where Tom’s spacesuit causes him to be mistaken for a monster by the lovely maid Alisande (Sheila White). He is swiftly taken prisoner by the deceitful Sir Mordred (Jim Dale) and brought to Camelot. Tom regales King Arthur (Kenneth More) with a befuddling crash course in world history, but is nonetheless sentenced to burn at the stake...
Composer Maurice Jarre was no stranger to the Far East by the time he scored The Setting Sun in 1992. He had traveled musically back in time to feudal Japan for the ten-hour miniseries of James Clavell’s bestseller Shogun in 1980. A few years later, he underscored the warring factions of the nineteenth-century Hong Kong opium trade in a feature film adaptation of Clavell’s Tai-Pan (1986).
Maurice Jarre scored The Setting Sun as an epic musical tapestry depicting events leading into WWII and Japan’s pending invasion of Manchuria. He wrote a large-scale, lavishly percussive and florid orchestral work, featuring both grand and tender themes. The orchestration included additional winds and brass, harps, pianos and other keyboards, a synthesizer and other electronics such as the EWI and EVI (Electronic Wind Instrument and Electronic Valve Instrument), played by Judd Miller and Nyle Steiner, the inventor of the instruments. The massive forces of the percussion ensemble included seven percussionists covering orchestral timpani, two large bass drums and a range of double-sided Japanese drums—two taiko, one odaiko, and a da-daiko— which often played in unison.
Jarre scored The Setting Sun with his customary musical continuity, allowing Intrada to construct the album by fashioning the shorter cues into lengthy, cohesive set-pieces that followed the overall picture narrative while playing as musically complete “movements” unto themselves, just as Jarre would have done. The score was recorded at Royce Hall on the University of Southern California campus and subsequently mixed by Shawn Murphy at Sony Pictures Studios. The digital masters survived in pristine condition.
First-time director Rou Tomono wrote the script for The Setting Sun based on his novel Rakuyô (the Japanese title of the film) about a Japanese soldier (Katô Masaya) who helps financially support his country’s military invasion of Manchuria and falls in love with the leader of a Chinese rebel force (Diane Lane). When they are drawn deep into the illegal opium trade to finance Japan’s imperialist mission, he collides with the ruthless leader of the Chinese mafia (Yuen Biao).
