Interview with Actor/Producer... Paul Porter

Not only are we finishing up the interviews with the great cast, now we get to chat it up with the producer/writer/actor/director/etc... Paul Porter. I didnn't spend nearly enough time talking about all the hats this man does wear, though in a production like "RABID LOVE" you do what is needed to get the job done.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]

Jeremy [HWR]: As your character "John Allen" in "Rabid Love"... is there one trait you played and felt you connected from your real life?

Paul Porter: Well, I’m not an actor at all, so whenever I ‘act’, I’m really just being myself.  I was always picturing John as me during the writing and then it ended up being most convenient for the feature that I play him since we were trying to keep the cast and crew as small as possible.  I guess one trait I played up with John is him being the quiet type- I’m not a talker in real life and really only communicate vocally when absolutely necessary.  But I also kept John’s lines in the movie to a minimum because I’m a horrible actor : )

Jeremy [HWR]: Working on the film "Rabid Love" what was one of the best and worst moments you remember during the making of "Rabid Love”?

Paul Porter: I think the best moment was pretty much anytime we were shooting because, like any project, we had been writing/developing/pre-producing for such a long time that it was just so cool to actually be on set and seeing the story that had only been in our heads and on paper come to life in front of us.  I honestly can’t say that there were any bad moments I remember- it was a fun, easy shoot and what little problems we had were pretty easily overcome.

Jeremy [HWR]: Do you feel many independent films that in the horror genre are missing the point on how to get there audience?

Paul Porter: Not really- I think most of them know exactly how to get to their audience- boobs and blood.  We’ve come to love the horror community and they’re extremely supportive and cool, BUT, one thing I really don’t like about it is how many terribly written and produced movies are out there that are huge hits just because they include gratuitous nudity and gore while completely disregarding the story, characters, and overall art of filmmaking.  Something we deliberately avoided with RL was the ‘grind house’ feel that most indies go for- we wanted to stay true to the spirit of fun, somewhat wholesome 80’s movies and not play the easy, cheap thrill card.

Jeremy [HWR]: If you could go "Rabid" for one thing, what would it be... and why?
Paul Porter: Queen!   Because- Queen, duh.  :)

Interview with Actress... Hayley Derryberry

You all know I will support those who work very hard in the field that they may be working in and here is another talented woman and I would say main star of the film "Rabid Love". I wanted to thank her for her time and wish the best in any direction that is taken.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: As your character "Heather Ross" in "Rabid Love"... is there one trait you played and felt you connected from your real life?
 

Hayley Derryberry: A lot of Heather is just me. One characteristic she had that I didn’t though, is that she was a track star. Preparing for that was a lot of fun. I did tons of running in the months leading up and even leaned how to jump hurdles.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: Working on the film "Rabid Love" what was one of the best and worst moments you remember during the making of "Rabid Love"?
 

Hayley Derryberry: The best thing was every night after wrap, how everyone would get together and hang out. All of our cast and crew were just amazing people! The worst thing? This question does not compute.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: Do you feel that many independent films in the horror genre are missing the point on how to get their audience?    
 

Hayley Derryberry: No, I think the horror audience is a strong one and will always support. I do think some modern horror is lacking the appeal of the classics, but I guess that’s a part of growth and change. I just don’t like that part very much.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: If you could go "Rabid" for one thing, what would it be... and why?
 

Hayley Derryberry: I’m not sure if you mean something I really love or something I really hate. Pardon my cheesy but I guess I would go “Rabid” for love! I really love my husband and my family so if anyone tried to mess with them, I would go on a rabid rampage.

"Rabid Love" Companion Book (A Behind the Scenes Look)

Okay, I know I am going on and on about this film "Rabid Love"... I really just appreciate the effort put into a project like this. Honestly they could just churned out a bunch of senseless violence and made for a suffering script, they went the distance. Now I am not just talking about the film here, but this "Companion Book", giving a look behind the scenes and a level of enjoyment making this. I think they offer up another professional side to not just a film, but to themselves wanting you all to have a complete experience. Here are their words on it:

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: As your character "Lisa" in "Rabid Love"... is there one trait you played and felt you connected from your real life?

Megan Hensley: As Lisa in Rabid Love I connected with a few things personally...the main one is that I  love nature and love camping an being outside. I also could see myself in the middle of the woods doing some weird hippie stuff like that...I go camping quite often. I really liked when we shot in the woods at night! 

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: Working on the film "Rabid Love" what was one of the best and worst moments you remember during the making of "Rabid Love"?

Megan Hensley: While working on the film rabid love, I made many many fond memories. The best thing I would say was when we all would wrap and hangout after a long hard days work. We would play rock band and watch awesome movies and on the weekends we would all go to WAL MART and watch a film in Dodge City. Such great times. The worst thing I would say, would be the heat! There wasn't much shade and it was hot as hell! But we still had so much fun.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: Do you feel many independent films that in the horror genre are missing the point on how to get there audience?

Megan Hensley: I do feel like a lot of indie horror films really are generic in a way. I think an indie horror films need something very unique and different from other horror films...such as...Rabid Love was set in the 80's and also had a great comedic twist. I was in another feature called Alice D and that is also very unique with the way it is shot and where it was shot. Just a little spice of something ya know? 

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]: If you could go "Rabid" for one thing, what would it be... and why?

Megan Hensley: If I could go rabid for one thing right now...it would probably be for coconuts. I used to have a peanut butter addiction but now it is with coconuts...I have been having one every day and they aren't cheap! So if I could, I would eat the living hell out of all coconuts. Eat them all up!

I received the film "Rabid Love" (Brain Damage Films) and it was entertaining.... I find that with many independent films there is no real detail. This had a great amount of detail and I liked the characters... we as an audience cared for them. Nice set up, strong voices and simplistic story that never got uninteresting. I get some films and call them "Fast Forward Films", this held my attention and that in my world sometimes is hard to do. Most of the filmmaker's attention is in the gore and less on story, they gave it... teased us...with both, I was impressed overall.

I really did enjoy the film and the smart way you did dodge the stereo-typical falls that other make. It's not about gory/nudity all the time... substance, to hold the audience. Grab them, hold them... then throw them to the ground like a roller-coaster and then wait for the next drop.
