Presented by Film Fest Ghent, Shigeru Umebayashi - Music For Film is the sixth album from the series on Silva Screen Records. This year, Silva Screen is honoured to release three albums of music by three outstanding composers, Shigeru Umebayashi, Mychael Danna and Gabriel Yared, featuring previously unreleased music, recorded by the Brussels Philharmonic under the baton of Dirk Brossé.

Shigeru Umebayashi - Music For Film is an updated version of Film Fest Ghent’s 2010 tribute to the composer’s work which featured his most celebrated music. This edition includes material that has not been otherwise released featuring two pieces from A Single Man, a cue from the anthology film Hero and ‘Moyou’, a new arrangement from his breakthrough score Sorekara, which features in the film The Grandmaster.

Shigeru Umebayashi is an internationally renowned composer who is best known for creating ‘Yumeji’s Theme’ for Wong Kar-wai’s film In The Mood For Love. In addition to collaborating with Wong Kar-wai on 2046, Umebayashi was the music producer and composer for Zhang Yimou’s films House Of Flying Daggers and Curse Of The Golden Flower.

Presented by Film Fest Ghent, Mychael Danna - Music For Film is the eighth album from the series on Silva Screen Records. This year, Silva Screen is honoured to release three albums of music by three outstanding composers, Mychael Danna, Gabriel Yared and Shigeru Umebayashi, featuring previously unreleased music, recorded by the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaams Radiokoor under the baton of Dirk Brossé.

Canadian composer Mychael Danna was a guest of honour at the 2007 World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert. At the time, he was best known for his collaboration with director Atom Egoyan on films such as Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter, which demonstrated his ability to mix orchestral, electronic and non-western music instruments.

Since then, Mychael Danna has received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and two World Soundtrack Awards (Film Composer of the Year and Best Original Film Score of the Year) for his magnificent score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. He has worked with acclaimed directors such as Ang Lee, James Mangold, Bennett Miller and Mira Nair alongside his ongoing collaboration with Atom Egoyan.

This expanded edition of the original 2008 album features pieces specifically recorded for this reissue, suites from Hearts Of Atlantis, Life Of Pi and a newly created, mesmerising suite from Moneyball. Also added to the album is the suite from Monsoon Wedding, recorded for Film Fest Ghent’s 2020 album World Soundtrack Awards - Tribute to the Film Composer.

Presented by Film Fest Ghent, Gabriel Yared - Music For Film is the seventh album from the series on Silva Screen Records. This year, Silva Screen is honoured to release three albums of music by three outstanding composers, Gabriel Yared, Shigeru Umebayashi and Mychael Danna, featuring previously unreleased music, recorded by the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaams Radiokoor under the baton of Dirk Brossé.

Oscar winning composer Gabriel Yared has been associated with Film Fest Ghent’s film music events since the establishment of the World Soundtrack Academy. When the festival launched the World Soundtrack Awards in 2001, he appeared at the very first World Soundtrack Awards Ceremony & Concert as the guest of honour. At this inaugural event, he also received the festival’s Special Joseph Plateau Honorary Award from director Jean-Jacques Annaud, for whom he scored L’amant and Wings of Courage. In 2004 the World Soundtrack Academy awarded him the Film Composer of the Year Award for Cold Mountain, one of his many acclaimed collaborations with director Anthony Minghella.

In celebration of Gabriel Yared’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award and on the original album’s
10th anniversary, Silva Screen Records have reissued the Gabriel Yared - Music For Film album, greatly expanding it with 50 minutes of additional music. The newly recorded pieces include ‘Ut Jucundas’, composed in 1992 for a Gaz de France advertisement, ‘Rosa’s Theme’ from Yared’s newest work The Life Ahead, ‘Elegy for Charlotte’ from Autumn in New York, the ‘End Credits’ from Amelia and the premiere recording of the City of Angels suite. The album also contains suites especially created for this album from L’avion, Les saveurs du Palais and Tom à la ferme and three previously unreleased tracks, recorded at the 2011 sessions, from L’amant, Tatie Danielle and Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

One of the most well-respected composers in film, Yared won an Academy Award for his score to Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which also won him a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Grammy. Yared was originally known for his work in French cinema, starting with Jean-Luc Godard and later Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue) and Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Lover). He also composed ballet music for works such as Clavigo for The Paris Opera and Wayne McGregor’s Raven Girl for The Royal Opera Ballet.

Silva Screen Music: "The Musical Anthology of His Dark Materials - Series Two" music by Lorne Balfe

Silva Screen digitally released the second volume of the highly successful 2019 concept album as an introduction to His Dark Materials Series Two music. Composed by Lorne Balfe, the album presents the newly composed principal themes from Series Two. ‘’Writing the score for season two was a fantastic experience due to being able to delve into the musical world of Cittàgazze.” says Lorne. “Recording the score had its challenges due to COVID. Musicians and singers from Inverness , Cardiff, London, Vienna and Bulgaria contributed to this season's soundtrack and made the music come alive.’’

The series will return to BBC One on Sunday, November 8th at 8.00pm and to HBO on Monday, November 16th at 9pm . Series 2 is based on The Subtle Knife, the second book in Philip Pullman’s trilogy. Dafne Keen is back as Lyra Belacqua alongside Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter and Lin Manuel-Miranda as Lee Scoresby. Also returning for series two is Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala, Joe Tandberg as Lorek Byrnison and Helen McCrory as Stelmaria. Joining the cast this season are Terence Stamp, Andrew Scott, Jade Anouka and Simone Kirby.

Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible: Fallout, The Lego Batman Movie, Churchill) is a Grammy Award winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated composer. Whether on an impossible mission, the heartbreak of the Queen, the perils of the cape crusade or the soul of a genius, Lorne Balfe creates a musical voice that reflects the characters and the stories that embody them. Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Balfe has created music in virtually all genres and for all visual media with projects ranging from major studio to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.

Silva Screen Music: "GOOD OMENS" music by David Arnold

Composer David Arnold’s soundtrack to the highly anticipated TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 comic fable that packs a punch.

Following the odd couple, angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) in their quest to sabotage the end of the World, Amazon Prime's six episode mini-series delivers a tongue in cheek adaptation of this powerful and funny story.

From the Award-winning composer of Sherlock and Casino Royale comes a soundtrack that perfectly complements the Good Omens’ drama and visual sensibilities. At times nostalgic and eerie but always varied, beautiful and full of excitement, this robust, yet funny music entity has become another character in the story. Here, Arnold has created a contemporary soundworld for heaven and hell.

The closing song is Tori Amos’ version of A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, a British wartime favorite referenced at the end of the book, conjuring feelings of separation and pining for untroubled times, and including the lines "There was magic abroad in the air. There were angels dining at the Ritz. And a nightingale sang in Berkeley square".

Good Omens is produced by BBC Studios, Amazon Studios, Blank Corporation and Narrativia. The series is directed by Douglas Mackinnon and features the all-star cast including Michael Sheen, David Arnold, Frances McDorman, Brian Cox, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm.

“The roots of Joanna Bruzdowicz's music can be located in the tradition of the colorful, lively and expressive neoclassicism of Grazyna Bacewicz, flavored by inspiration from the Polish school of sonorism (Penderecki, Lutoslawski). Her musical narratives are filled with kaleidoscopically shifting ideas and melodies; the moods alternate between somber reflection, sweet lyricism, and exuberant outbursts of joy.” Maja Trochimczyk, USC

Known for her work with French director Agnès Varda (Vagabond, Jacquot De Nantes and The Gleaners and I), Bruzdowicz is an accomplished contemporary composer in her own right, with a wide opus including ballet, opera, symphonic, chamber, film and television music. She studied composition with 20th Century greats - Kazimierz Sikorski, Nadia Boulanger, Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Schaeffer - at the Sorbonne in Paris and is perhaps best known in the classical world for her operas (The Penal Colony, The Trojan Women and The Gates of Paradise). As well as composing film scores, Joanna is also the co-creator of German TV series Stahlkammer Zürich which spawned 36 episodes.

Directed by Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel and starring Jonathan Pryce and Agyness Deyn, the disturbing sci-fi drama The White King made its debut at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where it was nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature. Lorenzo Allchurch plays Djata, a care-free 12-year-old growing up in a brutal dictatorship shut off from the outside world. When the government imprisons his father, Peter, and Djata and his mother Hannah are labelled traitors, the boy will not rest until he sees his father again. The White King is available on iTunes, Amazon and Netflix in the UK and will be released in the US by Film Movement on 5th December.

Original TV soundtrack to arguably the most intelligent and authentic version of the Titanic tragedy. The score includes Howard Blake’s symphonic score and a tapestry of historically-correct music that was played on the ship in the last hours.

Premiered by ABC on September 23rd 1979, S.O.S Titanic ran for three hours and was the costliest television film ever made. A huge star cast included David Janssen, Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, David Warner, Harry Andrews and Cloris Leachman and the brilliantly-researched script by James Costigan was based on a first-hand account by passenger-survivor Lawrence Beesley.

US-based producer Roger Gimbel wanted to use an English composer and had been much impressed by Howard Blake’s score for Ridley Scott’s THE DUELLISTS. Apart from the composition of a serious symphonic score there was also the intention to create a tapestry of historically-correct music such as that which would have been heard on the ship. An innovation in the story-telling portrayed the differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers and this was also to be reflected in the music - with, for instance, Irish music from the 3rd, songs with piano from the 2nd and a sophisticated orchestra in the 1st.

Howard Blake is one of the most popular and prolific living English composers, perhaps best known for his timeless TV score for the animated Channel 4 TV film 'The Snowman' (1982). An instant classic, the song 'Walking in the Air' was perfectly captured by then boy soprano Aled Jones. Blake’s successes include scores which he wrote for films such as 'The Duellists' and 'A Month in the Country', both of which won prizes. He was also Princess Diana’s favorite composer and she commissioned him to write a piano concerto for her 30th Birthday.

Orbital’s electronic soundtrack to Luis Prieto’s remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 directorial debut starring Richard Coyle, Agyness Deyn and Zlatko Buric.

The film follows a story of luckless drug dealer Frank over a course of a bad week.

In 1997, the British electronic dance music duo Orbital contributed to the scores of two feature films, Event Horizon and The Saint, and the music they made was amongst the more powerful and interesting elements in either movie.

In April, Orbital released Wonky to critical acclaim - their first album in eight years. BBC Online described the Wonky as “a triumphantly grand return,” NME as “a deep pool of blissful, sedentary festival listening”, whilst Q placed Orbital amongst “electronica’s music’s greats”.

Daniele Luppi’s loungy Mancini-esque score to the hit new STARZ series Magic City, emulates the sound of the late 50s and early 60s period. Set in Miami's Miramar Playa Hotel leading into the new year of 1959, hotelier Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) conjures up ways to finance his dream. He has essentially sold his soul to the devil, mob boss Ben "The Butcher" Diamond (Danny Huston). Ike's wife Vera (Olga Kurylenko), a former showgirl, and his three children think he is an honorable man, but he just can't break his pact with the most dangerous criminal in town. His life is a facade.

The updated version of Silva Screen’s long deleted and sought after 2000 reissue of John Carpenter’s sparse, piano-driven ambient/electronic score.

This release brings together not just the original album, which featured 20 minutes of newly released music, but a second 20 track disc of the entire score, drawn from the original tapes, re-mastered by long-time Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth.

 

The multi-talented filmmaker not only directed and wrote his films but also created his own unique brand of atmospheric synthesizer scores.

 

“I went back to Sound Arts Studio in central Los Angeles and quickly began composing and recording new tracks. Dan Wyman, my creative consultant on Assault On Precinct 13 and Halloween was at my side programming the synthesizers, keeping a critical eye on my multi-tracked performances and maintaining quality control over the long hours of recording and mixing. And, out of all this frenzy, re-working and re-structuring, I produced what I consider to be one of my best scores”

BuySoundtrax Records seeks to rectify that, with this new recording faithfully recreating the original music from the film, which proved a difficult task.  Vangelis’ score was composed entirely by performing on keyboards and recording it directly, so no written transcriptions exist. Edgar Rothermich was charged with reverse engineering the score – listening to the original music and a 1982 album mock-up and transcribing it by ear.  He also had to recreate the sound of 1982 synthesizers and decipher if noise heard was due to recording on tape or stylistic choices by the composer.

“Blade Runner is the most difficult kind of score to deconstruct,” said BSX producer Ford A. Thaxton.  “Symphonic music can usually be determined because the instrumental palette is known.  But the 1970s-era electronic technology and the improvisational style in which Vangelis created the score made it especially difficult.  But we feel Edgar’s made a very close replication of what the score sounded like in the film.  He’s true to the sound the original but he’s brought it into today’s world.”

Roy Budd’s film score debut - soundtrack to the controversial 1970 western. The Soldier Blue soundtrack album is the fourth album in Silva Screen’s reissues of Roy Budd’s catalogue which features extensive digital remastering.

Only a year after scoring Soldier Blue, Roy Budd completed seven scores topped by Get Carter and followed by the western Catlow, WW1 drama Zeppelin and comedy The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins, the latter three all featured on this release. Also included on the album is Concerto For Harry, a piece from the 1976 drama Something To Hide, Budd’s homage to the great concertos of Liszt, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. The piece highlights Budd’s excellent piano playing and is accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Traditional Scottish artist and composer, Keith Easdale, provides songs that propel the story. He was present throughout the production to supervise the music which has been described as the spine of the film.

On July 17, 1717 George Frideric Handel premiered his composition Water Music after King George I requested a concert to be performed on the River Thames. Close to 300 years later this major musical milestone will be emulated on London’s famous waterway.

The New Water Music draws on Handel’s original titles with eleven leading contemporary British composers contributing a newly written five-minute movement each. The work will be performed for the first time on a barge, which will be part of a 1000 boat flotilla celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant will take place on Sunday June 3rd in the presence of The Queen and, will be televised worldwide with an estimated one billion audience.

I have to say that was one of the best "Made for Television" movies I have seen in a very long time... my hat is off to the History Channel for "Hatfields & McCoys".  John Debney/Tony Morales capture the tone to fighting and the feuding as I am very pleased with how this just flows. Also those of you who don't know, but want to know... here is the link to the trailer song from "Bartholomew - The Silent Comedy". This is a great release, I think you all know what is next... go get it.
