OLIVE FILMS: DRACULA IN VEGAS [1999]

It’s Auf wiedersehen, Germany. Hello, Las Vegas when young vampire Max (Munich’s very own Maximillian Grabinger) makes the University of Nevada his college of choice. Not only does the school offer great academic corpses, er, courses, the campus is teeming with beautiful young ladies and an ample blood supply.

But when Max falls for gorgeous coed Christine, his love for her and a desire to settle down comes under the scrutiny of his parents, nosferatu with a more traditional vampire ethos. Maybe Max’s Uncle Felonious, a director of “art” films (who espouses the cinematic philosophies of Hitchcock and Rossellini) will put him on the straight and narrow.

But don’t be fooled: Dracula in Vegas is not a bleak, Bergmanesque view of the undead. It offers thrills & chills, and laughs & gasps in equal measure, along with some awesome fang work.

Dracula in Vegas, the vampire film with bite, is written and directed by Nick Millard (Cemetery Sisters) and produced by Flora Myers (aka Frances Millard).

LAKESHORE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE GLAMOUR & THE SQUALOR—ORIGINAL SCORE AND ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK ALBUMS DIGITALLY AND ON CD Original Score by Mike McCready

Lakeshore Records will release both the original score for the film The Glamour & The Squalor digitally and on CD on September 1STand an original soundtrack album with various artists is forthcoming—release date TBD. The original score was composed by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and the various artist soundtrack contains rare archival songs performed live by the cream of 90’s indie rock on Seattle radio 107.7 The End—No Doubt, Presidents of the USA, Super Deluxe, Mudhoney, Sebadoh, Garbage, Bush and more—interspersed with snippets of actual on air moments. The film was produced and directed by Marq Evans with music supervision by Kevin Moyer who also produced the albums. The film is available now on all platforms.

The Glamour & The Squalor is the story of Marco Collins, one of America’s last great rock radio DJs and a musical tastemaker that changed our culture. Before the internet made sourcing new music and rising bands a simple matter of keystrokes, there was the radio DJ. No one epitomized this role like Collins. He was the gatekeeper credited for helping break the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Garbage and countless others. Marco’s story is inspiring and universal. He turned his passion into a significant lifetime of work. And battling serious demons along the way—he’s still standing.

McCready wrote and performed a generous batch of tracks for the score showcasing both his guitar chops and flair for creating striking moods with his use of a variety of instruments including Mellotron, autoharp and strings. Local hero Kim Virant, founder of Lazy Susan, provides vocals on “You’re the Song.” Says McCready: “The Score album is dedicated to Ashley who helps me with my musical vision, my muse. And to my kids who inspire me daily. Thanks to Chris Adams for being awesome and a great organizer! Thanks to Kevin Moyer for suggesting we release this as an album! Thanks to Marco for allowing me to help his story. And to the entire cast and crew for The Glamour and The Squalor film. This is also in remembrance of all the musicians from Seattle who aren’t here anymore, but their music remains…”

SUMTHING ELSE MUSIC WORKS TO RELEASE SOUNDTRACK FOR ARK: SURVIVAL EVOLVED

Pre-Orders Available for Video Game Score Composed by Gareth Coker and Performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London

Album releases worldwide on digital and streaming platforms August 29

Sumthing Else Music Works, the premier record label dedicated to releasing video game soundtracks, and independent game developer, Studio Wildcard, are proud to present the epic orchestral soundtrack to the definitive open-world dinosaur survival-adventure game, ARK: Survival Evolved. Composed by Gareth Coker (Minecraft, Ori and the Blind Forest), the official soundtrack album will be released August 29 via digital and streaming outlets worldwide through Sumthing Else Music Works https://www.sumthing.com.

"Gareth's mind-blowing sense of melody and uncanny expertise at reinforcing specific themes and emotions through his music helped shape the identity of ARK: Survival Evolved from the very beginning," said Jesse Rapczak, Co-Founder and Co-Creative Director of Studio Wildcard. "Starting with that iconic main theme written for our first announcement trailer, Gareth continued to deliver a huge and varied score that brought to life every part of the game, be it the beach, the mountains, the jungles, the desert, the caves, the EPIC boss battles and even the out-of-this-world science-fiction climax of ARK's End Game. The score was so good, that we had no choice but to send Gareth to Abbey Road to record the entire thing with the 93-piece Philharmonia Orchestra!"

After graduating in composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London, English-born composer Gareth Coker traveled the world extensively to study music from different countries, including Japan, before completing the film scoring program at the University of Southern California. This multi-cultural background has enabled Coker to draw upon numerous musical influences that have shaped his rich and versatile musical sound and he has continued to develop a compositional style focusing on memorable, melodically-driven themes and motifs, combined with unique, and unconventional soundscapes. This approach, and his ability to apply it in a way that always serves to enhance the story earned him the attention of Moon Studios, which led to a highly successful collaboration on the acclaimed game Ori and the Blind Forest. Coker's universally critically acclaimed soundtrack for Ori and the Blind Forest was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences award for Outstanding Music Composition and SXSW Gaming Award for Excellence in Musical Score, and his success in the field led to him being awarded recognition as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) for his significant contribution to the music profession.

MVD Entertainment Group: Erik The Conqueror [Dual Format] (9/12)

In 1961, director Mario Bava (Rabid Dogs, Kill Baby Kill) turned his hand to the historical adventure genre, capitalizing on the recent success of 1958's Kirk Douglas vehicle The Vikings. The result was a colorful, swashbuckling epic of treachery, heroism and forbidden love: Erik the Conqueror.

In 786 AD, the invading Viking forces are repelled from the shores of England, leaving behind a young boy - Erik, son of the slain Viking king. Years later, Erik (George Ardisson, Juliet of the Spirits), raised by the English queen as her own, becomes Duke of Helford, while across the sea, his brother Eron (Cameron Mitchell, Blood and Black Lace) assumes leadership of the Viking horde and sets his sights on conquering England once again, setting the two estranged brothers on a collision course that will determine the fates of their respective kingdoms...

Featuring a bombastic score by frequent collaborator Roberto Nicolosi (Black Sunday) and memorably co-starring the stunning Kessler twins (Sodom and Gomorrah), Erik the Conqueror showcases Bava's immense talent for creating awe-inspiring spectacle with limited resources.

Now restored in high definition for the first time, Arrow Video is proud to present this cult classic in all its original splendor.

MVD Entertainment Group: NEW BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR & HUMANITY [LIMITED EDITION]

In the early 1970s, Kinji Fukasaku's five-film Battles Without Honor and Humanity series was a massive hit in Japan, and kicked off a boom in realistic, modern yakuza films based on true stories. Although Fukasaku had intended to end the series, Toei Studio convinced him to return to the director's chair for this unconnected, follow-up trilogy of films, each starring Battles leading man Bunta Sugawara and telling separate, but fictional stories about the yakuza in different locations in Japan.

In the first film, Bunta Sugawara is Miyoshi, a low-level assassin of the Yamamori gang who is sent to jail after a bungled hit. While in stir, family member Aoki (Lone Wolf and Cub's Tomisaburo Wakayama) attempts to seize power from the boss, and Miyoshi finds himself stuck between the two factions with no honorable way out.

In the second entry, The Boss's Head, Sugawara is Kuroda, an itinerant gambler who steps in when a hit by drug-addicted assassin Kusunoki (Tampopo's Tsutomu Yamazaki) goes wrong, and takes the fall on behalf of the Owada family, but when the gang fails to make good on financial promises to him, Kuroda targets the family bosses with a ruthless vengeance.

And in Last Days of the Boss, Sugawara plays Nozaki, a laborer who swears allegiance to a sympathetic crime boss, only to find himself elected his successor after the boss is murdered. Restrained by a gang alliance that forbids retributions against high-level members, Nozaki forms a plot to exact revenge on his rivals, but a suspicious relationship with his own sister (Chieko Matsubara from Outlaw: Gangster VIP) taints his relationship with his fellow gang members.

MVD Entertainment Group: RONIN [BLU-RAY]

RONIN. Noun, historical. A samurai who no longer serves a daimyo, or feudal lord.

From director John Frankenheimer (Reindeer Games, The Manchurian Candidate) comes Ronin, a pulse-pounding, action-packed crime thriller featuring an all-star cast headlined by Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver, Heat) and Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional).

On a rain-swept night in Paris, an international crack team of professional thieves assembles, summoned by a shady crime syndicate fronted by the enigmatic Deirdre (Natascha McElhone, The Devil's Own). Their mission: to steal a heavily guarded briefcase from armed mobsters, its contents undisclosed. But what begins as a routine heist soon spirals into chaos, with the group beset by a series of double-crosses and constantly shifting allegiances, and it falls to world-weary former CIA strategist Sam (De Niro) and laconic Frenchman Vincent (Reno) to hold the mission together.

A latter-day return to form for Frankenheimer, the film evokes the same gritty milieu as classic 70s crime fare like The French Connection, in addition to anticipating the early 21st century trend towards more grounded, realistic action movies, exemplified by the likes of the Bourne franchise.

Arrow Video is proud to present Ronin in a brand new, cinematographer-approved 4K restoration, allowing this jewel in the crown of 90s thriller cinema to shine like never before.

Caldera Records: “The Italian Key” by Tuomas Kantelinen

Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “The Italian Key” from 2011, directed by Rosa Karo. The film tells the story of 19-year old Cabella who receives a mysterious key as her only inheritance from her recently deceased uncle. The girl decides to literally unlock the secrets of her past by moving to a run-down villa in Italy. She slowly makes friends with three sisters and also befriends the ghost of a nine-year-old chimney sweeper named Angelo who died in the house long ago. Together with her new friends, Cabella starts to learn more about her mysterious past as she also rediscovers her “joie de vivre”…

The music for “The Italian Key“ was written by Tuomas Kantelinen who is also the producer of the film and the husband of its director. Since the film has a vintage look about it is meant to be an old-finished film in many respects, Kantelinen decided to pay tribute to that musically by delivering a romantic score for orchestra, filled with several themes and motifs that describe the characters and their surroundings. Like the film, the music is charming, sunny and optimistic without lacking the depth the subject matter requires. After six years, the music for “The Italian Key” finally receives its well-deserved release as one of the best works of Tuomas Kantelinen.

The 21st CD-release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and an elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg. HERE: http://caldera-records.com/

As I find myself being introduced to more music scores, I have come to realize I have heard many of the last 30+ years. Now with this one, I am just moved in a way that is very pleasurable as I listen to the whole piece. So be moved...

WaterTower Music: "IT" 2Cd by Benjamin Wallfisch

WaterTower Music today announced the release details of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated IT, the movie based on the iconic Stephen King novel of the same name which has been terrifying and thrilling readers for decades. Double CD and Digital versions of the album will be released worldwide on September 8, the same day the film opens in theaters. Special vinyl picture disc and double vinyl versions arrive just in time for Halloween, on October 27.

Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Benjamin Wallfisch (A Cure for Wellness, Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation), widely acknowledged as one of Hollywood’s most exciting and innovative composers, has assembled a thrillingly unsettling 38-track Original Soundtrack for IT with a palpable spirit of suspense, adventure and anarchy, using powerful themes, a full symphony orchestra and children’s choir.

“Every now and again, you come across a movie where the storytelling is so powerful, the subtext so visceral, the synergy between director, narrative and actors so palpable, that as a composer you can feel the music being energized by something so much bigger than what’s just on the screen,” Wallfisch said. “Creating a score to tell the story of a shapeshifting antagonist of unimaginable evil that can only be defeated when a group of individuals come together as one, required metamorphic themes, extremes of sonic irreverence and heartfelt quiet, and, most importantly, a musical language that strived to be constantly informed by the profound emotional truth driving the heartbeat of the filmmaking. To collaborate with Andy Muschietti on IT was to be invited into a thrilling, deeply inspiring and richly creative dynamic space. It was a true honor, and, as a lifelong Stephen King fan, a great privilege.”

I am not sure how the film is going to play out, being a remake/reboot... I sure can tell you that Benjamin Wallfisch does his job and does it well scaring us a little bit.

Artsploitation Films: "Red Christmas"...

Horror legend Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, Critters) stars as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve. When a mysterious, deformed young man named Cletus appears at their door, things soon change from petty insults to bloody, imaginatively orchestrated violence as Wallace attempts to protect her family from the vengeful intruder. The film deliriously infuses comedy, dark family secrets with outlandish gore and adds the always controversial subject of abortion in its bloodstained mix.

WRITING RED CHRISTMAS
From its inception the script took a couple of years to write. Abortion is a subject that hasn't been explored widely in horror film, despite the genre’s ability to tackle challenging subjects. At first I wrote a screwball horror; a fetus who attacks its mother (think Larry Cohen, Frank Henenlotter, or early Peter Jackson). But after many stilted redrafts and viewing of many documentaries on the subject the tone shifted. I did a lot of research both academically and in person with women of all ages and backgrounds who had varying experiences and opinions on abortion. What I've tried to present is a question rather than an answer. Interestingly, some people read this script and think it's pro-choice and others are just as adamant it's pro-life. I do accept that in personifying the fetus, turning it into a human, I have made a pro-life statement, which in turn murders nine people.

During the writing process I enlisted the help of another writer, Belinda King, who was script editor on the film as well as a producer. She trained in screenwriting at UCLA and brought to the script an international sensibility. Wanting a scream queen to play Diane, I knew the women I’d be approaching would have read infinitely more horror scripts than me. So, Belinda and I worked tirelessly to make sure the script was funny as well as horrific, character-driven, engaging and visceral.

By the end of the writing process I had a script that drew people to the project. Dee Wallace plays the lead and the film was made by some of Australia's best talent, both in front of and behind the camera. Armed with a lean, mean 92-page script, we hit the Southern Highlands of NSW in late 2015 and made RED CHRISTMAS.

Intrada: BODY DOUBLE (REISSUE) Music by Pino Donaggio

Intrada re-issues its earlier Special Collection release featuring Pino Donaggio's score to the 1984 Brian De Palma thriller Body Double. This remastered edition also features the premiere of Jonathan Elias' trailer music, which is very reminiscent of John Barry's style.  No stranger to suspense and horror, Donaggio had previously scored De Palma's Dressed to Kill and Blow Out (both previously available from Intrada), providing an evocative mix of eeriness and striking lyric romanticism. Body Double opens with a smashing horror movie pastiche for scenes accompanying the shooting of a vampire movie, while laying the groundwork for some of the operatic flourishes and important thematic approaches for the rest of the film.  Lyricism and tension permeate throughout, with the protagonist's claustrophobia characterized by a two-note motif pounded out by horns and heavier brass in scenes featuring his phobia-induced incapacitation. Donaggio wrote a number of long and elaborate musical cues that are not only at the forefront of the sound mix, but also feature the kind of melodic development rarely seen in movies today, resulting in one of his strongest scores.

Body Double was De Palma's  attempt to fuse his characteristic Hitchcock homages with a jaded look at hardcore pornography. The story finds actor Jake Scully (Craig Wasson) losing a part in a vampire film due to his claustrophobia and finding that his live-in girlfriend is cheating on him, putting Scully out on the street and out of a job at the same time. Fortunately, a fellow actor takes pity on Scully and puts him up house-sitting in the Hollywood Hills. A telescope in the house is pointed at an apartment complex where a wealthy exhibitionist dances mostly naked in front of her window each night. Scully becomes fixated on the woman, especially after he sees her seemingly pushed around by an abusive husband and then stalked by a mysterious, scarred “Indian” thug. Shortly afterwards she is murdered, yet Scully sights a porno actress who bears a striking resemblance to the murdered woman —or at least resembles her unclothed body—and he begins to suspect that he was set up to be a witness the murder.

Intrada: COSMOS: A SPACETIME OSYSSEY - VOLUME 2 Music by Alan Silvestri

In this second volume of music COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey, composer Alan Silvestri continues to develop his musical universe laid out in the second episode.  This part focuses on the relationships between all living things, showcasing artificial selection, including how every breed of dog evolved at the hand of man and how natural selection sculpted, imperfectly, the human eye.  With Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson as a compelling host, this journey into the often microscopically small continues with the state-of-the-art CGI, animation and wealth of cutting-edge scientific fact.

As with the first part, Silvestri's music is gloriously symphonic, although more focused on rhythms that enhance the scientific universe described in this part.   Intrada presents this second visit to the Cosmos universe, produced by the composer, including additional bonus tracks not previously released.   Inside the colorful packaging are a few words from Dr. Tyson and this release is the next step in our four volume journey through Silvestri's musical odyssey.

Lakeshore Records to Release THE LURE - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Available Digitally... The Horror-Musical Mashup Features Original Songs Written by Barbara and Zuzanna Wrońska (of the Polish Indie Band Ballady i Romanse)

“The Lure is a genre hybrid: a love story, a musical, and a fantasy-horror reverie—in other words, an adult fairy tale. I was inspired by the kitschy world of big dance-hall parties from the Communist era, which came to a close when I was twelve years old.

The lost souls, the warm vodka, and the glamour amid poverty fueled my imagination and stirred my memories of the two restaurants my mother ran during this not-so-belle epoque.

The Lure is also a coming-of-age story about discovering your sexuality and femininity, and how these two things can sometimes be used for problematic purposes. The mermaids are not an end in themselves but a reflection of the eventual, painful discovery that adulthood is not all it seems.

As far as previous depictions of mermaids in popular culture, I was inspired much more by Homer and Hans Christian Andersen than by Walt Disney: my mermaids do not wear seashell bras but rather chew on human hearts.”
—Agnieszka Smoczyńska

In this bold, genre-defying horror-musical mashup — the playful and confident debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska — a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate '80s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly aura make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit fantasy world of Smoczynska's imagining. In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen's original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human, and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, The Lure explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.

LAKESHORE RECORDS... AESOP ROCK’S "BUSHWICK"

Lakeshore Records will release underground hip hop pioneer Aesop Rock’s original score to the forthcoming film Bushwick.  His first ever film score, Bushwick-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a mind-bending collection of instrumental tracks providing an exhilarating beat-heavy backdrop to the Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott directed thriller.  Produced by Aesop Rock, the tracks also feature contributions on synth and guitar by Grimace Foundation.  The film tells the story of twenty-year-old Lucy (Brittany Snow), who emerges from a Brooklyn subway to find that her neighborhood is under attack by black-clad military soldiers. An ex-Marine corpsman, Stupe (Dave Bautista), reluctantly helps her fight for survival through a civil war, as Texas attempts to secede from the United States of America. Lakeshore Records will release Bushwick—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 11th, on CD August 25th and on vinyl at a later date.

Building on the rapping style of eccentrics Kool Keith and Del the Funky Homosapien, Aesop Rock (AKA Ian Bavitz) became one of the hottest MCs in the post-millennial underground. With seven albums, five Eps, production credits and appearances in film and television, Aesop has made an indelible cultural impression since the late ‘90’s.  In early 2007 Aesop Rock composed a 45-minute piece for Nike's Original Run series, a continuous track meant to be listened to while jogging (other artists included LCD Soundsystem and the Crystal Method).  Album releases include his 1997 indie debut Music for Earthworms, a trio of albums for the Definitive Jux and a shift to the Rhymesayers label who released Skelethon and his most recent album The Impossible Kid.

Says Aesop: “This entire project maintained a pretty smooth momentum from start to finish. This was my first foray into working on a feature film, and this team was helpful the entire way—even in my moments of self-doubt.  I’m extremely excited to have been a part of ‘Bushwick.’”

LAKESHORE RECORDS: "BRIGSBY BEAR" Score by David Wingo

Lakeshore Records will release the BRIGSBY BEAR  – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on July 28, 2017. The album features the original score by David Wingo (LOVING, MUD).

“I was beyond thrilled when I found out that Dave [McCary, director] and Kyle [Mooney, co-writer] were interested in talking to me about scoring the film,” said Wingo. “I'm a big fan of all their Good Neighbor stuff and was kind of obsessed with these ‘very special episode’ sketches they did for SNL and was sending them to everyone I knew, and the idea of ever potentially working with them never crossed my mind until I got the call.”

BRIGSBY BEAR Adventures is a children's TV show produced for an audience of one, James (Kyle Mooney). When the show abruptly ends, James' life changes forever and he sets out to finish the story himself.

“There was a lot of discussion as to how much the score should have in common with the kitschy 80's kid show music from Brigsby Bear the show,” Wingo explained. “We always kept in mind that the score should for the most part be subjective to James' experience and reflect his mental and emotional state, so it made a lot of sense that with his single-minded obsession with the show as well as the fact that it's basically the only “culture” he was ever exposed to that if the music was to mirror him, then it needed to maybe share something in common with the Brigsby music.”

Lakeshore Records: "47 Meters Down" by tomandandy

Lakeshore Records will release 47 Meters Down- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on July 28, 2017. The album features original music by tomandandy (The Rules of Attraction, Wish Upon).

“Johannes [Roberts, director] had a very clear vision from the beginning,” said Tom Hadju (of the duo tomandandy). “He wanted the score to be savage and raw — violent even. He really encouraged us to take extreme measures.” Andy Milburn added that when composing for the film, “we started with the snapping of the cable and fall to the ocean floor. We wanted to develop the colors of the score, and that scene needed all of them. It was really the crucible in which we could find just how noisy and crazy and brutal we could get.”

On the rebound after a devastating break-up, Lisa (Mandy Moore) is ready for adventure while on vacation in Mexico with her sister Kate (Claire Holt). Still, she’s apprehensive when two handsome, fun-loving locals (Yani Gellman and Santiago Segura) suggest the girls join them for a shark-diving excursion on a boat skippered by Captain Taylor (Matthew Modine).

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS: "WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY" Music Composed By Christian Wibe

Varèse Sarabande will release the WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 18, 2017. The album features original music composed by Christian Wibe (DEAD SNOW, SKAM).

“What Happened to Monday is the story about seven siblings struggling to stay alive in an overpopulated world with little resources.  At its core it´s a film about family, desperation, survival and betrayal,” described Wibe.

In a not so distant future, where overpopulation and famine have forced governments to undertake a drastic "One Child Policy," seven identical sisters live a hide-and-seek existence pursued by the Child Allocation Bureau. The Bureau, directed by the fierce Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close), enforces a strict family-planning agenda that the sisters outwit by taking turns assuming the identity of one person: Karen Settman (Noomi Rapace). Taught by their grandfather (Willem Dafoe) who raised and named them - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - each can go outside once a week as their common identity, but are only free to be themselves in the prison of their own apartment. That is until, one day, Monday does not come home…

“While the story screamed for broad stroke emotions and the big classical orchestra, it´s also a story set in the future, and electronics was used to bring in the more futuristic colors,” Wibe explained.  “The score features a big 85-piece orchestra, 3 percussionists, prepared piano, guitars and a good load of classic synths.”
