Intrada: THE DOVE [1974] - John Barry

---------------------------------------------------------
For the 1974 Paramount film The Dove, composer John Barry composed a carefree, breezy score to follow the adventures of a boy sailing around the world. The choppy waters of rumbling marimbas over a dark, low bass note lead into a serene, cyclical guitar figure (infused with an appropriately ’70s spirit) that propels the main title—a romantic, lyrical string theme that sails through the film’s dramatic, episodic voyage. Punctuated with glinting French horn phrases, the theme glides with an elegant, unflagging energy—upbeat in mood, with moments of typical Barry melancholy. The score’s other major theme is first presented as a song, “Sail The Summer Winds,” which Barry wrote with longtime James Bond lyricist Don Black. Sung by English pop singer Lyn Paul, the song is an ode to youthful exploration and the hippie spirit.

To present John Barry’s beautiful music for The Dove, Intrada— after some years of digging—located the unmixed eight-channel scoring session takes for the soundtrack album that first appeared on the ABC label in 1974 and were thought to be lost. Having these masters allowed us to recreate Barry’s original mix but with greater clarity than before, as well as presenting the two tracks that included sound effects without those effects as bonus tracks.  Intrada was also given access to the original mono music stems vaulted at Paramount Pictures, allowing for the inclusion of eight additional, previously unreleased John Barry cues, totaling another 16 minutes.

The film tells the true story of Robin Lee Graham, a 16-year-old high school dropout, who in 1965 launched out of San Pedro (in Southern California) on a 24-foot sloop named “The Dove”—and over the course of the next five years he became the youngest person to sail solo around the globe.

Intrada: THE RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE/INHERIT THE WIND - LAURENCE ROSENTHAL

---------------------------------------------------------
In 1976 Laurence Rosenthal presented another of his landmark scores for the United Artists film, The Return of a Man Called Horse. There is much to admire in this score: the fierce percussive music for the opening massacre, the harrowing intensity of the scenes surrounding the Sun Vow ritual, and the jovial theme that is introduced in the gift-giving scene. Taken as a whole, the score pulses with a vibrancy that is remarkable even by Rosenthal'€™s standards. But the centerpiece is unquestionably the filmâ€'s powerful main theme. As the composer details in his preface to the album, this melody expertly combines the formative influences of Morganâ€'s life: the elegance and refinement of old Europe, the majestic vistas of the Great Plains, and the inner mysticism of the Lakota Sioux.

Return of a Man Called Horse is a sequel to the 1970 film A Man Called Horse, continuing the story of John Morgan (Richard Harris), a British aristocrat who had previously been captured by €”-- and subsequently adopted --  into €”the Yellow Hand tribe of the Lakota Sioux. After a stifling hiatus in his native England, he returns to America to find his friends in despair, broken by malicious trappers in alliance with a rival tribe. Renewing his spirit and sense of purpose, Morgan rallies the Yellow Hands to victory and a new life.

Being such essential Rosenthal, Intrada embarked on a full restoration of the score, remixing the entire score from the 24-track elements stored at MGM and presenting this greatly expanded edition.  Flowing over 2-CDs, but not long enough to fill out the second CD, Intrada includes as an added bonus his score to the 1999 television adaptation of Inherit the Wind.  Coming more than two decades after scoring The Return of a Man Called Horse, Rosenthal was called upon to provide music for a very different cross-section of American history. A fictionalized account of the landmark 1925 "€Scopes Monkey Trial,"€ in which a Tennessee teacher was tried for violating a state law that prohibited the teaching of Darwin'€™s theory of evolution in public schools.

Though the score features a reasonably sized orchestra, Rosenthal maintains an intimate feel, often emphasizing small-group writing for individual instrument families.  He develops the material with an eye toward illuminating the relationships between characters. Rachel and Bert receive a delicate romantic theme, which becomes anguished during her mid-trial crisis of confidence. Another lovely melody accompanies the scenes of tenderness between Brady and his wife. But there is also warm and inviting material for scenes between Brady and Drummond, where Rosenthal skillfully conveys the history of genuine affection and even friendship that exists between these ideological opposites.

Inherit the Wind is not a lengthy score, coming in at less than thirty minutes of music. Furthermore, several passages were dialed out of the film mix, making this album (sourced directly from the digital 2-track session mixes) the first time Rosenthal'€™s work can be heard in its complete form.

Lakeshore Records: BROKEN HORSES [2015] - John Debney

--------------------------------------------------
Lakeshore Records will release BROKEN HORSES – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 7th and on CD May 5, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by John Debney (HOUDINI, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST). BROKEN HORSES was written, produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, marking the first time a filmmaker from India has done so.

“Having been a huge fan of Mr. Chopra's work, I was absolutely thrilled when asked to do the score for Broken Horses,” said Debney.  “Working with Vinod Chopra was one of the highlights of my career.”

Having left town as a child after the death of his father, young music prodigy, Jacob Heckum (Anton Yelchin), returns to his desolate hometown after years only to discover that Buddy (Chris Marquette), the child-like elder brother he left behind, now works for a notorious drug gang. The gang's ruthless boss has twisted Buddy's simple mind and manipulated him into a killer, a surrogate son who blindly does as he is told. Jacob is unable to convince Buddy to leave his new fraternity. Drowned in guilt for having abandoned him, Jacob realizes the only way to save Buddy is from the inside out. Set in the shadows of the turbulent American-Mexican border Broken Horses is a gritty, epic thriller about bonds of brotherhood, laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence.

“Broken Horses is a tour de force of brilliant filmmaking and stellar acting,” Debney described.  “The attention to detail and passion shown by Vinod was infectious and inspiring. I hope to work with Vinod again and would treasure the opportunity.”

Vinod Chopra Films and Reliance Entertainment present BROKEN HORSES in theaters on April 10, 2015. BROKEN HORSES - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally on April 7th and on CD May 5, 2015.

Caldera Records: Belle du Seigneur - Gabriel Yared

--------------------------------------------
Caldera Records | http://caldera-records.com/
--------------------------------------------
Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the movie Belle du Seigneur from 2011, directed by Glenio Bonder. The movie is based on the famous book of the same title by Albert Cohen who writes about a troubled love affair in Switzerland during the 1930s. Cohen portrays Solal, who starts an affair with the beautiful Ariadne, the protestant wife of one of his employees. The forbidden passion and the political dealings prior to World War II create an unbearably tense atmosphere both on paper – and on film.

The tense atmosphere can be experienced in the music by Gabriel Yared as well. The Oscar-winning composer (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley) wrote a delicate, elegant and intimate score for symphony orchestra which is built around a fragile waltz which serves as the main theme of the soundtrack. The theme is surrounded by sorrowful string adagios, catchy melodies for solo instruments such as the clarinet and the piano as well as inspired suspense passages which Yared uses for demanding solo passages with complicated rhythms.

Enjoy one of the most hauntingly beautiful scores by the Lebanese-born composer for the first time ever on CD. As a bonus, we included an insightful interview with the musician who talks about his career and his approach to film music in general. The eighth CD-release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

Varese Sarabande: CHUCK (TV) [2015] - Tim Jones

------------------------------------------------------
Varese Sarabande | http://www.varesesarabande.com
------------------------------------------------------
Varèse Sarabande Records will release CHUCK – Original Television Soundtrack digitally and on CD April 7, 2015.  The album features the show’s original score by Tim Jones (Human Target, Cult), with three performances by Jeffster, featuring Vik Sahay: “Take on Me”, “Fortunate Son,” and “Fat Bottom Girls.”  The digital version of the soundtrack will contain additional score tracks and two bonus Jeffster songs, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and the hilarious “Mr. Roboto.”

“CHUCK was really a hybrid of many different genres,” said Jones. “My instructions were to bind them with a score that would bring together all the disparate elements. Nearly every episode saw the introduction of a new sound or feel to match the action. It was a great deal of fun.”

Tim Jones is a composer for film and television. While best known for his work on Chuck, other network shows include Human Target and Cult. He recently finished work on the feature documentary, The Abolitionists for executive producer Gerald Molen. He majored in film scoring and graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Film projects include Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball, The Death and Life of Bobby Z, Wicked Little Things, Vampires: The Turning, and The Forsaken. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

CHUCK was a beloved high-concept action comedy that followed Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi) as the Buy More computer geek turned secret agent. When Chuck unwittingly downloads a database of government information and deadly fighting skills into his head, he becomes the CIA's most vital secret. This sets Chuck on a path to become a full-fledged spy, assisted by the stoic Colonel John Casey (Adam Baldwin), Chuck's best friend, Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez), and the CIA's top agent - and now Chuck's wife - Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski). With the help of this unlikely team and his unorthodox techniques, Chuck is ready to take Operation Bartowski freelance. Featuring an amazing ensemble cast and action unlike anything else on television, there is no mission too impossible for CHUCK.

One of the fan favorite storylines featured Buy More employees Jeff Barnes (Scott Krinsky) and Lester Patel (Vik Sahay) as the cover band Jeffster.  When talking about the whirlwind that formed Jeffster, lead vocalist Sahay (Lester) said “Well, initially, it came up as a wee subplot for me and Jeff, in us wanting to play at Ellie's wedding. Once we had done a song or two, we performed at Comic-Con. I feel like that really ‘made’ it for us. Something happened there that is very hard to describe. Beauty and mania!”

Now you can relive the Jeffster-mania, along with the your favorite moments from the show, with the CHUCK – Original Television Soundtrack, available digitally and on CD April 7, 2015.

It's about damn time... I watched this show! Many of us loved this show, some even hated the ending of it... it doesn't mean we didn't care. We did and now a few years after it ends we get the special treat of CHUCK vs. THE SCORE from Varese Sarabande. I didn't even mention JEFFSTER, what could be better...

MovieScore Media: Releases TWO new scores by Composer Christian Henson...

-------------------------------------------------------
MovieScore Media | http://moviescoremedia.com/
-------------------------------------------------------
MovieScore Media marks its latest collaborations with composer Christian Henson with the simultaneous release of two scores he wrote for the films of director Jon Wright: Robot Overlords and Grabbers. The soundtracks are released to coincide with the UK premiere of Robot Overlords, the third collaboration between director Wright and composer Henson. Starring Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley, Robot Overlords is set in a dystopian future where Earth has been conquered by powerful robots from a distant galaxy. The human survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they move outside their designated homes. A revolt ensues...

The score is a hybrid of electronic and orchestral elements, written from the perspective of the child protagonists. The music dares to be bombastic and overpowering, or as the composer put it, he wrote what sounds true for those kids who grew up under the robot yoke. As Henson explains: “A lot of modern action scores today are descriptive by merely creating a musical impression of what is onscreen. We tried to populate the score with 'the truth' for all the players - this means when we are scary, we’re impossibly horrific. When we’re tragic, all is is lost. And when we’re heroic, we’re totally shameless. And like all kids,we had the ability to turn our emotions on a six-pence in the moment."

The second release next to Robot Overlords is Grabbers, a 2012 alien invasion film set on a small island off the coasts of Ireland. Starring Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley and Russell Tovey, the action/horror/comedy starts out like any good alien invasion film with blood-thirsty, sea-dwelling aliens arriving to Erin Island. Their path of terror is marked by whale carcasses and mysterious disappearances, but a full-on attack is thwarted by an unlikely escape route to our heroes. The aliens can’t tolerate alcohol, so as long as the residents of the island can fend off the invaders while they’re drunk enough, they may have a chance of survival.

The music from the previous Wright/Henson collaboration, Grabbers is released as part of MovieScore Media’s Discovery Collection. Just like Robot Overlords, the music for Grabbers follows the "bigger is better approach" with bombastic action cues and picturesque faux-Celtic music playing an ode to the composer’s own childhood memories. As he recalls: “This score is dedicated to my father and the Saturday afternoons we spent together watching all of those great movies of the 70’s, an homage to my entire childhood film heritage. This score leaped off the page on first reading. It struck me that an immersive, thematic line was needed to help the viewer escape into the movie like the good ol’ days was what was required. We needed a shameless celebration of movie music and the sheer enjoyment of cinema.” Both score were recorded at Air Studios, London.

Christian Henson is a UK based BAFTA and Ivor Novello nominated composer. Ever since setting up his first West London recording facility to work with best of London underground music scene (such as The Freestylers or LTJ Bukem), Christian wrote music to some 45 films, including his recent credits like the heart-wrenching French holocaust epic La Rafle (2010), the conclusion to the Poirot franchise (2009-13) and the hit video game Alien Isolation (2013), co-written with The Flight. His previous releases with MovieScore Media include Gabor Csupó's fantasy The Secret of Moonacre (2008), Simon Fellows’ modern day Lewis Carroll adaptation Malice in Wonderland (2009), the seabound thriller Triangle (2009), the Medieval horror Black Death (2010), the military thriller Storage 24 (2012) and the television version of Sinbad (2012).

Okay I watched it, it was different... I like my STATHAM a killing machine and don't get me wrong he was... it was just the messy rest of the film. There is a great plot wanting to happen, it just never forms into anything of substance. Yes, look at all the stars in this film... for the minute or two they actually have any screen time.

The new ROBOCOP is ROBOCRAP!

What makes a movie smart?  What qualities must a film have to be considered intelligent?  Good acting?  Terrific cinematography?  Big name actors?  Perfect directing? Complex stories and characters?   I will tell you.  It is knowing what kind of movie you are making.  That is the first thing that must be established before writing your script.  ROBOCOP 2014 doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be.  It doesn't understand what we the people for the most part want to see in a movie about a cop that was turned into a robot.  ROBO2014 wants to be a personal drama about a man losing his body and humanity while obligingly putting safe and slick action pieces that is also punctuated with corporate satire.  The problem is that the film never finds the right mix or balance.  The result is a boring, forgettable bland experience which is the ultimate crime for a film.

ROBOCOP 2014 tells the story about a corporate big wig played by Michael Keaton who wants Congress to pass a repeal of a law that prevents robots from policing the country.  The rest of the world allows it which makes him already rich but I guess he wants America to allow it so he can make a little more money.  He employs a scientist to create a robot that is part man to be a loop hole to the law that will lead Congress to rethink it's stand on the whole robot policing the world issue.  Excited yet?  Then this cop who everyone keeps calling  "Murphy" shows up and starts telling his police Captain this long back story about him and his partner busting bad guys and getting into a gun fight to keep the audience interested in the film.  He gets blown up in a car explosion reminiscent of the first PUNISHER film starring Dolph Lundgren and then turned into a robot.  The rest of the film is about Murphy dealing with being a robot and connecting with his family and eventually solving his own attempted murder.  After the main bad guys are dead the film still has 30 minutes left so Michael Keaton has to do something bad enough to justify Robocop going after him and killing him so there can be more action and stuff happening.  In the end Robocop lives and gets to be a cop and spend time with his family.  A perfect happy safe non challenging PG-13 ending the kids will enjoy.

Varese Sarabande: The Great Human Odyssey [2015] - Darren Fung

------------------------------------------------------
Varese Sarabande | http://www.varesesarabande.com
------------------------------------------------------
Varèse Sarabande will release THE GREAT HUMAN ODYSSEY – Original Television Soundtrack, digitally on March 17 and on CD April 28, 2015.  The film features original music by Darren Fung (LOST YEARS).

Three-part documentary series and interactive web documentary The Great Human Odyssey explores the unlikely survival and the miraculous emergence of Homo sapiens as the world’s only global species. Ancient climate research has revealed that we evolved during the most volatile era since the extinction of the dinosaurs. Just like the many other kinds of human who once shared our world, we should have died away. Instead, our species survived to populate every corner of the planet, against all the odds.

Over 18 months of filming, Niobe followed in the footsteps of our ancestors across locations on five continents, working with 22 Canadian, American and South African cinematographers, including aerials, underwater, and ultra-slow motion specialists. Equipped with the next generation of ultraHD 4K cameras, film crews worked in some of the most hostile environments on Earth, including Arctic Siberia, remote South Pacific islands, tropical rainforests and African deserts.

On Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River, Niobe witnessed the extremely rare skin cutting initiation of the Crocodile People. His crew was the first in film history to visit the Badjao – the world’s last breath-hold diving nomads – in their war-torn homeland in the southern Philippines. In Russia, they filmed over the course of a full year in a closed border zone on the Bering Strait, eventually succeeding in their goal of capturing a traditional Inuit nest raid on 200-meter high sea cliffs. At the same time, their cameras had privileged access to one of the world’s leading ancient DNA laboratories, where research on early human remains is explaining the mysteries of our survival, including the enigma of our ancestral interbreeding with Neanderthals.

“This story, our story, of how humans as a species have miraculously adapted and persevered is fascinating,” Fung explained. “The drama, the wonderment, the adversity, and the triumph — these are the emotions I’ve tried to evoke in our score. It’s any composer’s dream to have not only the remarkable resources we had to realize the score, but to have the support, talent and friendship of a director and producer like Niobe.”

The Canadian Broadcasting Company presents THE GREAT HUMAN ODYSSEY, which aired in Canada in February, and is viewable on the internet here: http://www.cbc.ca/greathumanodyssey/episodes/.  THE GREAT HUMAN ODYSSEY – Original Television Soundtrack on Varèse Sarabande, will be available digitally on March 17 and on CD April 28, 2015.

Composer PAUL LEONARD-MORGAN on BATTLEFIELD™ HARDLINE

“It’s a really bold and different kind of score,” said Leonard-Morgan.  “EA had heard Dredd, amongst some of my other works, and loved it.  Combined with my past producing and working with bands, I really tried to do something quite different with the score, so I took it down a total band route, along with various analog synths.”

Leonard-Morgan made sure to integrate his original composition with the songs used in the game.  He described, “We spent ages working out playlists for the licensed music. The audio team at EA and I would send tracks back and forth between us, putting together huge Spotify playlists, to create the collection of songs for BATTLEFIELD™.  Obviously my score needed to fit in with these songs to create a cohesive experience for the player.”

As for his original music, “I sampled up a load of gunfire from the game and created loops with it, so that subliminally, there’s some drum loops which have the same sounds as people playing the game shooting each other,” Leonard-Morgan described.  “I also made a ‘prepared piano’ in the studio for the scene where there’s a shootout amongst drug dealers in a weed factory. I wanted to make it really trippy.  It ended up with me just hitting anything and everything in the studio, including an ancient metal sword which was lying around, and manipulated the audio to add delay to it. There’s even a few sleep-deprived maniacal laughs in there to add to the hallucinogenic vibe.”

BATTLEFIELD™ HARDLINE will be available March 17, 2015 in North America and March 20, 2015 in Europe on Origin™ for PC, Xbox One, all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system. The game will also be available on Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

Following a chance encounter with the dangerous looking Brad (Eric Balfour), our heroes make a few too many wrong turns and end up lost. Even worse, they are in the territory of an aggressive bear defending it land. The already complicated relationship between Alex and Jenn reaches its breaking point...

The music for Backcountry is provided by Frères Lumières, an ensemble made up of multi instrumentalists Vince Nudo and Dan Watchorn who began their musical collaborations in the Montreal rock band Priestess. After recording two studio albums and touring North America, the two musicians set out to create cinematic soundtracks outside the confines of rock music. Their list of credits include Thomas Michael's Running Mates (2010) starring Henry Winkler and Caroline Monnet's short Gephyrophobia which got them to attend the Festival de Cannes. Backcountry marks the duo's first feature-length score.

The music for Backcountry builds upon the exciting combination of inventive electronic textures, moody dreamlike atmospheres,  and a hint of country twang / industrial rock passages in selected tracks. The music is as much about the predatory nemesis as it is about the deteriorating relationship of Alex and Jenn as the composers explain: “We wanted to avoid certain film score conventions common to the genre. Working in tangent with Adam’s vision, the goal was to create a dramatic score that developed as the story did. The tone reflects the relationship between the characters, their journey into the unknown and the uncertainty of their survival.“

Intrada: WARLOCK [1989] (Expanded) - Jerry Goldsmith

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Jerry Goldsmith’s score to the 1989 New World film Warlock combines his developing fascination with electronics with trademarks from earlier eras in his career.  Goldsmith wrote for a sizable but judiciously utilized group of 70–80 players of the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra in Australia.  Both his complex, agitated string writing and rattling percussion recall earlier scores like The Mephisto Waltz and Planet of the Apes.  The film’s main title presents the score’s three key elements.  A dry, primitive-sounding utterance of Goldsmith’s theme for the warlock opens the score, played by synthesizer, but with a sound not unlike the medieval instrument the serpent.  His hymn-like theme for the character Redferne, also initially voiced by synthesizer, follows the warlock theme; and finally a repeating, percussive motif that will permeate the rest of the score is introduced, played by xylophone and other percussion—a signal for the presence and evil intentions of the warlock.

Goldsmith was not enthusiastic about the mixes made in Australia.  At the time when Intrada prepared the original release back in 1989, rather than remix everything, Goldsmith requested Intrada assemble and master the LP and CD from the ½” four-track units but remove some of the electronic effects and woodwind colors assigned to the center channel where the problems were most prevalent. That left something of a vacuum in the final two-track stereo master. As a result, a then-generous 54 minutes of music with inherent compromises became the souvenir of Goldsmith’s impressive work.

For this release, the original 2” 24-track session rolls were unearthed, containing all of the information that did not make it into the four-track units and allowing for a brand new mix from scratch, resulting in the first proper two-track stereo mixes with all of those previously missing tracks. The final results are an altogether different audio experience, putting on display all of those additional orchestral colors and myriad electronic effects. And yet there's more --  now there is also a wealth of previously unreleased music to go with the stunning sonics—72 minutes in all!

**Warlock will also be available on 180-gram vinyl later this summer.

Just Announced! I cannot be more thrilled, this is one that I think needed an expanded version... not that the other was lacking in any sort of way. It's a great score by Goldsmith and anything we can get from his earlier work is just amazing... Bravo to Intrada.

Intrada: GOING APE [1981] - Elmer Bernstein

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1981 Paramount Pictures film Going Ape!'’s most prestigious contributor was veteran composer Elmer Bernstein, who was in the midst of his comedy cycle that began with Animal House in 1978 and Airplane! in 1980.  In spite of being a goofball comedy, Going Ape! required music from Bernstein that was deceptively complicated— with a great deal of thematic material— and saw the composer collaborating with the filmmaker on enough songs to nearly qualify the movie as a musical.  Bernstein’'s score (sourced here from 2” 24-track masters) is full of the engagingly good-natured comic writing that made the composer such a perfect fit for the genre. He even adapted Nino Rota'’s theme from The Godfather to play as muzak in two restaurant scenes, not-so-subtly reminding the audience of actor Frank Sivero'’s connection to the classic gangster films.

The story of Going Ape! focuses on Foster Sabatini (Tony Danza), the son of circus impresario Max Sabatini, who inherits three orangutans, along with five million dollars, after his father dies. There’s just one catch—if he gives the simians away or any of the orangutans die over the next three years, all the money will go to the zoo. Stuffy zoological society president Gridley (Joseph Maher) is determined to make just that happen, and he encourages his dimwitted associate Brandon (Rick Hurst) to work on the problem. Brandon hires two equally dimwitted former mafia hit men, Joey (Art Metrano) and “Bad Habit” (Frank Sivero) to arrange for some “accidents” to befall Foster and his new orangutan family.
