Olive Films: "JAMÓN JAMÓN [1992]"

From director Bigas Luna (Golden Balls) comes Jamón Jamón, starring Academy Award® winner Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) making her motion picture debut opposite Academy Award® winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) and co-starring Jordi Mollà (In the Heart of the Sea), Stefania Sandrelli (1900) and Juan Diego (Your Next Life).

Written for the screen by Cuca Canals, Bigas Luna and Quim Monzó, Jamón Jamón traces the romantic entanglements of the beautiful and pregnant underwear factory worker Silvia (Cruz); José Luis (Mollà), the father of her child and heir to the factory fortune; Raul (Bardem), underwear model, seducer and would-be-bullfighter; and Conchita (Sandrelli), José Luis’ doting mother, family matriarch and Raul’s lover. Through a series of Machiavellian plot machinations, Conchita will seek to tear apart the relationship between her wealthy son and the second-class Silvia. Melodramatic, surreal (a duel using ham legs is a highlight) and oozing with sexual tension, Jamón Jamón is soap opera at its grandest.

While seeking refuge from the chaos of the outside world, he’ll find romance at every turn in the witty love story Belle Epoque.

Kino Lorber and Zeitgeist Films Release Old Stone The Award-Winning Debut Feature Film by Johnny Ma

Kino Lorber and Zeitgeist Films are proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of Old Stone, the thrilling debut feature film from director Johnny Ma. This intense action Neo-Noir thriller tells the story of a taxi driver who hits a motorcyclist one night, and stops to help. This accident sets into motion a nightmarish series of events for the taxi driver as he struggles to survive against a bureaucratic legal system that is utterly indifferent to helping him. Old Stone was an Official Selection of the Toronto International Film Festival (where it won the award for Best Canadian First Feature Film) and the Berlin International Film Festival. The film also won Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Stockholm Film Festival, and was nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards.

Old Stone will become available on Blu-ray and DVD January 30, 2018, Blu-ray and DVD. Special features include behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, "Grand Canal" -- a short film by Johnny Ma, and the trailer.

In Johnny Ma's thrilling debut feature, a Chinese taxi driver finds himself plunged into a Kafkaesque nightmare where no good deed goes unpunished. Beginning as a gritty social-realist drama before u-turning into a blood-drenched noir, Old Stone follows the repercussions of a car accident in a society where life is cheap and compassion is ruinously expensive.

When a drunken passenger causes Lao Shi to swerve and hit a motorcyclist, the driver stops to help the injured man. When no police or ambulance arrive he drives the victim to the hospital, checks him in and finds himself liable for the man's medical bills. The repercussions of Shi's selfless act expose a society rife with bone-chilling callousness and bureaucratic indifference. On the verge of losing his cab, his job and his family, Lao Shi (in a magnificent performance by Chen Gang) has to resort to desperate measures to survive.

Intrada: "WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT" (3Cd) Composed and Conducted by ALAN SILVESTRI

In 1988, Touchstone Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a technological marvel integrating animation and live action.  To score the onscreen antics of the wacky Roger Rabbit and his sourpuss human detective-for-hire Eddie Valiant, director Robert Zemeckis called in his trusted composer, Alan Silvestri. The pair first worked together on Romancing the Stone and the following year's mega-hit, Back to the Future.  Having also scored the aggressive action film Predator just the year prior, Silvestri was a brand name and brought a diverse set of styles to the colorful, kinetic onscreen action.  Starting with a cool jazz styling in the previously unreleased Main TItle, Silvestri sets the tone for the film, then immediately diverts to a cartoon shooting in progress.  A colorful and wild orchestra follows the crazy happenings in the cartoon world until production is interrupted.  As the story unfolds, private dick Eddie Valiant is introduced as well as his cool and somewhat nostalgic, bluesy theme.  The challenge was for Silvestri to write a score that was jazzy noir, action, with generous doses of Carl Stalling.  The result is a swirling mix of styles that come together into a unified whole that captures the world of Roger Rabbit, 1940s Hollywood, and the under- and over-belly of the Toon World.

To present this expanded edition, including a wealth of music not used in the final cut of the film, Intrada assembled Dennis Sand's original mixes into a program running 98 minutes.  In addition, some alternate takes are provided in the Extras section as well as the three Roger Rabbit shorts released in subsequent years:

-Tummy Trouble, composed and conducted by James Horner
-Rollercoaster Rabbit and Trail Mix-Up composed and conducted by Bruce Broughton

To round out this 3-CD set, the final disc contains the original album presentation featuring Silvestri's unique edits and assemblies including some dialog omitted from the complete presentation on the first two discs.

In the film, Bob Hoskins plays Eddie Valiant, a bitter, boozy detective who watched his brother die at the white-gloved hands of a crazed Toon. In a riff on Chinatown and other classic noir films, Roger’s ’40s-era Los Angeles is populated with trolleys, old-school movie moguls...and living cartoon characters. Eddie gets pulled into a case involving the death of Toontown’s owner, Marvin Acme, which is pinned on the rascally Roger Rabbit. The gumshoe must confront his own demons and prejudices, and ultimately the maleficent Judge Doom (Christopher Lloyd), who wants to exterminate all toons in his quest to pave California over with freeways.

PUNISHER: THE NETFLIX SERIES is very "Bourne-ing."

Let me tell you something, folks.  I am a huge fan of the Punisher.  I have the character's first appearance in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #129.  I have just about every issue of every volume of the Punisher's main run of comics as well as a ton of his appearances in other characters' comics.  I think he is just the tops!  Superheroes are often the outsiders of society.  If that is so then Frank Castle is the outsider of outsiders.  He cannot rely on his superpowers to save the day because he has none!  What a fascinating hero in a world of super powered superheroes. I tell you all of this to assure you that this review is not going to be one of those "It sucks because the show isn't like the comics" kind of reviews.  I promise.  I will say, however, that Netflix's THE PUNISHER is terrible for so many other reasons.  Yea, that's right.  I didn't care too much for this show.  Everyone else seems to love it but I found the show to be a 13 hour endurance test of boring.  It's a thin unimaginative story populated with a bunch of characters that serve as oversize luggage that drag down and get in the way of anything interesting happening.  Oh, and the show is nothing whatsoever like the comics!

The story is another origin story!  Can you believe it?  How ballzy do you have to be to put out another origin story of the same version of the character?  It is like the creators of this show don't know what to do with this guy or are too afraid to write stories that concern what the Punisher actually does.  So in DAREDEVIL season 2 we are introduced to Frank Castle who is hunting down those who murdered his family.  By the end of the show he gets them all.  Now for his new show he discovers that there was one more person left and he spends the entire 13 episodes trying to find out who he is and kill him.  You can rest assure that season 2 of the PUNISHER will feature yet another character tied to the death of Frank's family that he will have to go after for another 13 episodes.

MVD Entertainment Group: "Orchestra Rehearsal" [1978]

Made in 1978 for Italian television, Orchestra Rehearsal is possibly Fellini's most satirical and overtly political film.

An allegorical pseudo-documentary, the film depicts an Italian television crew's visit to a dilapidated auditorium (a converted 13th-century church) to meet an orchestra assembling to rehearse under the instruction of a tyrannical conductor. The TV crew interviews the various musicians who each speak lovingly about their chosen instruments. However, as petty squabbles break out amid the different factions of the ensemble, and the conductor berates his musicians, the meeting descends into anarchy and vandalism. A destructive crescendo ensues before the musicians regroup and play together once more in perfect harmony.

Abounding with its director's trademark rich imagery and expressive style, Orchestra Rehearsal marks the last collaboration between Fellini and the legendary composer Nino Rota (due to the latter's death in 1979) who provides one of his most beautiful themes in the film's conclusion.

MVD Entertainment Group: "Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno" [1964]

In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot, the acclaimed director of thriller masterpieces Les Diaboliques and Wages of Fear, began work on his most ambitious film yet.

Set in a beautiful lake side resort in the Auvergne region of France, L'Enfer (Inferno) was to be a sun scorched elucidation on the dark depths of jealousy starring Romy Schneider as the harassed wife of a controlling hotel manager (Serge Reggiani). However, despite huge expectations, major studio backing and an unlimited budget, after three weeks the production collapsed under the weight of arguments, technical complications and illness.

In this compelling, award-winning documentary Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea present Inferno's incredible expressionistic original rushes, screen tests, and on-location footage, whilst also reconstructing Clouzot's original vision, and shedding light on the ill-fated endeavour through interviews, dramatisations of unfilmed scenes, and Clouzot's own notes.

MVD Entertainment Group: "YOUTHS ON THE LOOSE AND REBELS WITHOUT CAUSES IN THE UNRULY SEISHUN EIGA YOUTH MOVIES OF JAPANESE ICONOCLAST SEIJUN SUZUKI"

YOUTHS ON THE LOOSE AND REBELS WITHOUT CAUSES IN THE UNRULY SEISHUN EIGA YOUTH MOVIES OF JAPANESE ICONOCLAST SEIJUN SUZUKI Making their home-video debuts outside Japan, this diverse selection of Nikkatsu youth movies (seishun eiga) charts the evolving style of the B-movie maverick best known for the cult classics Tokyo Drifter (1966) and Branded to Kill (1967). The Boy Who Came Back (1958) marks the first appearances of "Nikkatsu Diamond Guys" and regular Suzuki collaborators Akira Kobayashi and Jo Shishido, with Kobayashi cast as the hot-headed hoodlum fresh out of reform school who struggles to make a clean break with his tearaway past.

The Wind-of-Youth Group Crosses the Mountain Pass (1961) is a carnivalesque tale of a young student who hooks up with a down-at-heels travelling circus troupe. Teenage Yakuza (1962) stars Tamio Kawaji as the high-school vigilante protecting his community from the extortions of mobsters from a neighbouring city. The Incorrigible (1963) and Born Under Crossed Stars (1965), both based on Toko Kon's novels about young love, represent Suzuki's first films set in the 1920s era later celebrated in his critically-regarded Taisho Trilogy.

MVD Entertainment Group: "The Witches"

The Witches... In the mid-sixties, famed producer Dino De Laurentiis brought together the talents of five celebrated Italian directors for an anthology film. Their brief was simple: to direct an episode in which Silvana Mangano (Bitter Rice, Ludwig) plays a witch. Luchino Visconti (Ossessione, Death in Venice) and screenwriter Cesare Zavattini (Bicycle Thieves) open the film with The Witch Burned Alive, about a famous actress and a drunken evening that leads to unpleasant revelations. Civic Sense is a lightly comic interlude from Mauro Bolognini (The Lady of the Camelias) with a dark conclusion, and The Earth as Seen from the Moon sees Italian comedy legend Totò team up with Pier Paolo Pasolini (Theorem) for the first time for a tale of matrimony and a red-headed father and son.

Franco Rosso (The Woman in the Painting) concocts a story of revenge in The Sicilian's Wife, while Vittorio De Sica (Shoeshine) casts Clint Eastwood as Mangano's estranged husband in An Evening Like the Others, concluding The Witches with a stunning homage to Italian comic books.

MVD Entertainment Group: "Viva l'Italia"

Viva l'Italia... is a documentary made after the event, trying to figure out what happened. I tried to place myself in front of the events of a century ago, the way a documentarist would have done who had the good fortune to follow Garibaldi's campaign with his camera." Roberto Rossellini To celebrate the centenary of Italy, the Italian government commissioned Rossellini to make a biopic of Giuseppe Garibaldi, one that would follow his exploits with 'the Thousand' and their role in the country's unification. Rossellini approached the film as he had The Flowers of St. Francis, presenting the main character in neo-realist mode, as though making a documentary. Restored by Arrow Films from the original negative, this disc marks the first North American home video release of Viva l'Italia in any format, allowing English-speaking audience to discover another Rossellini classic.

Kino Lorber: "The Pink Panther Cartoon Collection - Vol. 1" [2018] (Blu-Ray)

Finding immediate fame in the opening title sequence of Blake Edwards’ 1964 classic comedy The Pink Panther, the feline embodiment of the Swinging Sixties cool quickly become the star of his own animated shorts produced by the DePatie-Frelend Studio. Unlike the loud and manic characters of other animation studios, the Pink Panther was lithe and easygoing, and moved to the rhythm of jazzy theme music of the great Henry Mancini (Breakfast at Tiffany’s).

Usually thwarting the plans of a variety of uptight “little men”, the hep cat’s fresh approach to cartoon comedy earned an Academy Award for his first solo effort: The Pink Phink (Best Animated Short Film, 1964) and remains the era’s most iconic animation sensation. This collection of 20 cartoons are all mastered in HD and feature the original audio without laugh-tracks which were added to the television versions of the short films.

Sony Classical: "MOLLY’S GAME" Music by Daniel Pemberton

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of MOLLY’S GAME (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music by Daniel Pemberton. The soundtrack to Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut will be available on January 5, 2018. STXfilms and The Mark Gordon Company’s MOLLY’S GAME was released in select theaters in the U.S. on December 25th, and will expand wide on January 5, 2018.

“It was great working with Aaron - I still can’t believe this is his first time as a director - he was so assured, enthusiastic and supportive it felt like he’d been doing it all his life,” said Pemberton.

“When you’re directing a film for the first time—and I would imagine when you’re directing a film for the hundred and first time—you don’t want the top people involved to be soldiers who’ll carry out your instructions. You want them to be artists who are better than your instructions. At an early meeting with Daniel in Toronto, where much of MOLLY’S GAME was shot, I told the extraordinary composer that I wasn’t hearing electronic music in the score. Instead I wanted strings, reeds and brass—an orchestral sound. Daniel nodded, smiled his thousand-watt smile and said, ‘There will be electronic music,’” Sorkin joked. “Daniel became nothing less than a co-author of the film. And I’ll be forever grateful that he followed his instincts instead of my instructions.”

Varèse Sarabande: "THE COMMUTER" Music by Roque Baños

Varèse Sarabande will release THE COMMUTER – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on January 19, 2018 and on CD February 26, 2018. The album features original music composed by Roque Baños (DON’t BREATHE, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA).

“The director Jaume Collet-Serra was great to work with,” said Baños when asked about his experiences on the film. “Jaume gave me total freedom to develop the music.  His only direction was to create patterns in the music that evoke a commuter’s everyday routine. I did that in the main theme actually, which is a repetition of a small phrase with little variations.”

Insurance salesman Michael (Liam Neeson) is on his daily commute home, which quickly becomes anything but routine. After being contacted by a mysterious stranger (Vera Farmiga), Michael is forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on the train before the last stop. As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, he realizes a deadly plan is unfolding, and he is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy that carries life and death stakes for everyone on the train.

“I used a traditional line-up of instruments including piano, strings, brass, and percussion,” said Baños. “On top of all of those amazing musicians, I also incorporated an unusual instrument - the train horn. It gives personality to the score, and it put's the train as a central character in the movie. The train has it's own theme, played by this train horn, giving the sound a character that could only be THE COMMUTER.”

Lionsgate and StudioCanal present THE COMMUTER in theaters on January 12, 2018. Varèse Sarabande will release THE COMMUTER – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on January 19 and CD February 26, 2018.

Varèse Sarabande: "THE LONG ROAD HOME" Music by Jeff Beal

Varèse Sarabande will release THE LONG ROAD HOME – Original Limited Series Score digitally on January 12, 2018 and a limited edition CD is available beginning today directly at www.varesesarabande.com. The album features original music composed by Emmy®-Award winning composer Jeff Beal (BOSTON, House of Cards).

On April 4, 2004, the First Cavalry Division from Fort Hood was ferociously ambushed in Sadr City, Baghdad-- a day that later came to be known as "Black Sunday." Based on Martha Raddatz’s best-selling book, The Long Road Home chronicles their heroic fight for survival, as well as their families' agonizing wait on the home front back in Texas.

Jeff Beal was clear on the importance of The Long Road Home. “When you do a story about real people you really want to get it right,” he said. “Film music is the language of the emotional journey that a character goes through. One of the things that I love about this series, is that it is not just a combat movie or about an ambush, it is about the soldiers’ lives. Each hour you learn about them, their wives, their kids.  And unfortunately some of these guys don’t come back. It is great chance for us to see the level of sacrifice as well as the dignity and bravery these people have. This is their job and what they have to do is pretty amazing.”

He grew up spending a lot of time on Atari/Amiga and video games that clearly is represented in his tracks.

Waveshaper emerged back in 2013 but the last couple of years has blossomed into one of the most well known artists in the so called Synthwave scene. In 2016 he released the album “Station Nova” on NRW Records and contributed with 4 originaltracks to the PS4 / Xbox game “Furi” OST, alongside names like Danger and Carpenter Brut among others.  In 2017 he released the EP Velocity.  Scoring video game and movie soundtracks are something that he is putting more focus on.

Robert Parker: Originally a classically trained pianist, Swedish electronic musician Robert Parker went from tracker music during the 90s to retro-esque the following decade. His love for analog synthesizers began when he bought a Korg Polysix in 2009, which was the starting point of the style of music he produces today. His studio is located in Stockholm, where he creates music that ranges between everything from chiptunes to disco. He uses a combination of hardware synthesizers and trusty VSTs, where the Roland Juno 60, The Minimoog and the SH-101 are his cornerstones.

He does regular live shows. So far he has played in Canada, Australia, France, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Russia and China.

The Travelers will face their most difficult obstacles yet, including the Faction, a deadly virus, and a mysterious new Traveler (Enrico Colantoni), all while continuing to live the everyday lives of the present-day host bodies over which they’ve taken. Along with McCormack and Colantoni, Travelers features an all-star Canadian cast including MacKenzie Porter, Patrick Gilmore, Jared Abrahamson, Nesta Cooper, and Reilly Dolman.

Adam Lastiwka is a prolific composer for film and television based in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. He is best known for his work on the globally renowned Netflix series Travelers from Stargate Creator and Writer Brad Wright, as well as the Emmy Nominated series Interrupt this Program.

Starting at the age of seventeen with a three-album record contract, Adam seated himself as a pioneer of the home-studio based recording movement, thriving within a complex and challenging industry. The raw, powerful, organic and unique arrangements he creates with his distinct musical palette garnered attention, at a very young age, from Producers and Directors worldwide, earning him a diverse range of internationally broadcasted series, and to this day has contributed music to more than five hundred (and counting) episodes of television, documentaries, feature films and advertisements.

His fresh, unique and collaborative approach to scoring and composition always lends itself to a heightened final product in whatever context he’s working. Adam believes in delivering the most custom tailored scores to all of his clients, and in keeping with that goal, he has dedicated himself to learning the widest variety of musical instruments from all corners of the globe. While he is definitely an advocate of technology and is happy to utilize it in his productions, the artificiality and staleness it can yields, as well as the lack of personalization to the client has made him utilize it only the most transparent capacity that is necessary.

Lakeshore Records: "BLACK MIRROR: BLACK MUSEUM" Music by Cristobal Tapia de Veer

Lakeshore Records will release the BLACK MIRROR: BLACK MUSEUM – Original Soundtrack digitally on January 19, 2017. The album features original music by composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer  (UTOPIA, HUMANS, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS).

“BLACK MIRROR was one of the best things I’ve seen on TV,” said Tapia de Veer. “However I wasn’t influenced by other episodes while writing the score, because Colm’s [McCarthy, director] Black Museum was its own thing. It is very Black Mirror, but the style felt new to me, so I worked on it as if it were a stand-alone film.”

The Black Museum episode is presented as a series of three stories told by Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge), proprietor of the remote "Black Museum" to his solitary visitor Nish (Letitia Wright), all involving various exhibits related to cutting edge technological connections and transfers with the human brain that Rolo had developed in his career.

“The beginning, discovering the Black Museum, that was going to set the tone for the rest of the show,” explained Tapia de Veer. “The music morphed in many ways throughout the 3 stories, then goes back to where it started with the Black Museum, although with a sense of accomplishment, but also a sense of doom.”

To create the overall feel, “I tried many things,” said Tapia de Veer. “But in the end the whole palette comes from one single piece of music I gave Colm that he felt could be the theme that gives continuity, and holds the three stories together.”  In addition to creating a bit of a theme for Rolo to invoke a salesman-like drive, but with a creepy vibe, Tapia de Veer utilized girls voices which poke through the mix, “Melodic hints that accompany Nish, as well as other characters like the Monkey, somehow connecting them all as allies in this quest for revenge and/or justice.”

NETFLIX present BLACK MIRROR streaming globally where available. Lakeshore Records will release the BLACK MIRROR: BLACK MUSEUM – Original Soundtrack digitally on January 19, 2017.

MVD Entertainment Group: "Cat O' Nine Tails" (1971) [Blu-ray + DVD Limited Edition]

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as "nine times more suspenseful" than its predecessor, was The Cat O' Nine Tails. When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute's scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case.

But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperiled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco's young niece, may also be in the killer's sights... This second entry in the so-called "Animal Trilogy" found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O' Nine Tails remains one of Argento's most suspenseful and underrated films.

Intrada: "ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES" (2CD) Music by Michael Kamen

Intrada kicks of the 2018 soundtrack year with a 2-CD expanded edition of Michael Kamen's adventurous score for the Morgan Creek production of Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.  The original album featured 50 minutes of score (plus two vocals, not available for this release), whereas the film contains nearly two hours.  Combined with alternates, this release showcases an additional 85 minutes of music not previously released.  The theme became such a signature sound that Morgan Creek used it for their logo attached to their movies from that point on.  Joined by horns, Robin is given a heroic theme during the opening credits, drawing in the audience to the deeds and misdeeds to come from this new vision of Robin Hood.  The orchestration is traditional—featuring brass in action scenes, strings in scenes of intense emotion, and pastoral woodwinds to evoke the beauty of Sherwood Forest. It roars, it whispers. It sings, it dances. It excites, it calms. Sometimes it even frightens. With a strong heroic theme, a "stalking bass line" for needed menace, and a simple, yet delicate and romantic love theme, Kamen had composed a film score worthy of the mighty thief prince.

The film opens in Jerusalem, during a crusade led by King Richard I. Robin of Locksley (Kevin Costner) is a prisoner, escaping to return to England—but his homecoming is hardly joyous. The sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) has brutally murdered Lord Locksley, destroyed his estate and despoiled the countryside, hoping to amass enough wealth to bribe English barons to betray their lawful king. The events that follow mostly adhere  to the established story and feature the usual ensemble: sheriff’s henchman Guy of Gisborne (Michael Wincott), Little John (Nick Brimble) and Friar Tuck (Michael McShane). But there are several new twists. Robin is accompanied back to England by a new character, Azeem (Morgan Freeman), a moor whose life he has saved, and who has vowed to return the favor. Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is a feisty, independent female who initially disdains Robin and manages to be an empowered woman until the very end, when she becomes a traditional damsel-in-distress.
