Interview with Composer SAM WAYMON on Howlin' Wolf Records release "GANJA & HESS" [Part: One]

Welcome into the Howlin' Wolf Records family and we welcome you!

HWR: What kind of impact do you believe the film had in 1973, how it's received in today near 2020 and what would you like to see the listener to take away from the soundtrack "GANJA & HESS"?

SAM WAYMON: In 1973 no one had ever seen a film like this.  No one had ever heard a soundtrack like this being it was not a blaxploitation film like Hollywood was making - it was different. it was original . and it was not a gangster/shoot'em up cop movie. The impact was substantial and exciting. But not in America.  It was hailed more in Europe. It took Europe by a storm.  That's why it was chosen as one of the best films of the decade at the Cannes Film Festival.  But back here in the U.S. well, that's another story. After it opened on 57th street in NYC at the Playboy theater, with a lot of famous Hollywood starts attending the Premier with fog lights on the street and police closing off 57th street.. the press didn't understand the film and most people had to see it twice to understand the seduction and metaphor of the film Bill Gunn had written.  The music however, was liked from the  beginning. I was thrilled and perplexed at the same time.  I thought and knew you could not separate the two. The black community loved it. the black music industry folks and musicians loved my music and called it "before it's time" and called it a masterpiece for a young black composer such as myself. The Black writer's and filmmaker's community hailed Bill as a genius with language. I agree. That man could write language. That also helped translate my music into sounds.

I must say for 2020 the world is different now than then.  A new generation of people with new exciting challenges and visions and dreams and opportunities before them when it comes to creativity and sounds. and music. Technology has a great deal to do with that. But most importantly, the world can now see what Bill and I went thru to make this film back then. It was a struggle and big struggle. But we had to do what our dream commanded us to do otherwise we would be ourselves. Our theme was to always be TRUE TO YOURSELF.

I'm so thrilled Jeremy that people, you, Howlin' Wolf and Wall Crumpler love and appreciate the blood, sweat and tears that went into making this film. All i wanted people to know was you must do what you can to fulfill your dream at any cost. When it comes to Art, hey, nothing should ever get in your way. I'm hoping this film and my music is an inspiration and motivation to other young composers and musicians to follow their vision as I did. Old or young. Doesn't matter your age...just stay inspired and be around other creative positive people to keep you grounded. Period. If you have a gift be true to it and respect  it as I did and still do to this day and will till I'm under the grass.

HWR: Please share a story or memory working on the film soundtrack for "GANJA & HESS" and do you feel the film has a "cult" status?

SAM WAYMON: I don't know the answer to that. I guess it's because the  music is "raw and acoustic" and not complicated with too much technology - i kept it simple yet spiritually connected to the script and the story.  Remember, no one has ever seen a film like this, so maybe that's why it has a "cult" following.  You tell me.

End of Part I... THANK YOU. Please find more information on "GANJA & HESS" soundtrack here at "HOWLIN' WOLF RECORDS".

MVD Entertainment Group: "The Limits Of Control" (2009) [BLU-RAY/DVD]

When it comes to American independent cinema, there's no one quite like Jim Jarmusch, the celebrated auteur behind such classics as Stranger Than Paradise and Only Lovers Left Alive. Eschewing his usual American landscapes in favor of a variety of locations throughout urban and rural Spain, his 2009 anti-thriller The Limits of Control remains one of his most alluring and multi-layered creations. An enigmatic loner (Isaach de Bankolé, Black Panther, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai) arrives in Spain, instructed to make contact with a series of strangers in different locations throughout the country, each of whom provides a cryptic clue which propels him further towards his mysterious goal. But who is the Lone Man? Why is he here? And how does the recurring figure of an alluring femme fatale (Paz de la Huerta, Enter the Void) fit into the puzzle? Boasting stunning cinematography by the award-winning Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) and featuring cameos from an array of celebrated character actors, including Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También) and the late John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), The Limits of Control is a languid, hauntingly beautiful film that combines the best of American and European arthouse sensibilities.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment: "HUSTLERS" [BLU-RAY/DVD]

Hustlers is a 2019 American crime drama film written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, based on New York magazine's 2015 article The Hustlers at Scores: The Ex-Strippers Who Stole From (Mostly) Rich Men and Gave to, Well, Themselves by Jessica Pressler.[5] The film stars Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B. Lopez is also a producer on the film through Nuyorican Productions, alongside Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay through their Gloria Sanchez banner.

First announced in February 2016, the film was originally set to be financed and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. But amid financial trouble, Annapurna dropped the rights in October 2018. After STX Entertainment picked them up, much of the cast joined that fall through the following spring, and filming took place in New York City from March to May 2019.

Hustlers had its world premiere on September 7, 2019, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 13, 2019. The film has grossed $150 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics, with Lopez's performance singled out for praise.

Bedroom Community: "THE COUNTY" music by Valgeir Sigurðsson

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to The County, with music by Valgeir Sigurðsson, will be released on January 10th, 2020, exclusively from Bedroom Community. The 15-track album features eerily beautiful and scene-setting melodies created by the Icelandic musician.

The drama had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section. The County is the follow-up to Grímur Hákonarson’s Festival de Cannes Award-winning debut Rams and stars actors Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, as well as Þorsteinn Bachmann.

“Director Grímur Hákonarson and I have worked together a few times in the past, so it helped that we already had a dialog and a fluidity in the way we work together. First I watched the film a few times, and then I turned off the screen and just wrote music in response to what I had seen. I often do this because I want to make a score that flows with its own narrative. On Grímur’s suggestion, we used a lot of synths and electronic textures, and also used some of the real sounds from the film for the score. There is an obnoxious milking-robot that features quite heavily, as well as other sounds from around the farm and the environments that I also managed to incorporate into the score. Then, I also recorded a lot of solo strings that I was really excited about, but mostly didn’t need to be in the film once the images were turned back on. In the final mix I think we cut about 50% of the score that I had completed, or more even, we agreed fully on all the cuts. But, on the soundtrack release I keep many of these elements because they informed my process and I feel that they are integral to the music and necessary when it is stripped of the images it was created for.” – Valgeir Sigurðsson, composer.

Coming up in 2020, Valgeir will perform his captivating music at the famous Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN featuring acts like Patti Smith, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Kronos Quartet, amongst others. The singular festival experience explores connections between musicians and artists, effortlessly crossing the boundaries of musical genres as well as artistic disciplines.

In addition to The County, Sigurðsson’s Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to An Acceptable Loss will become available on December 20th, 2019.

ABOUT THE COUNTY.. The co-op system in Iceland arose in the early 20th century as a response to Denmark's centuries-old monopoly on trade; however, in many instances, these supposed mutual-aid societies grew to be as exploitative as the system that preceded them. In The County, Grímur Hákonarson tells a powerful David-and-Goliath tale about an independent farmer whose defiance of her local co-op brings her face to face with its sinister underside.

Inga (Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir) has always questioned the slavish devotion of her husband, Reynir (Hinrik Ólafsson), to the co-op, even as the co-op's debt has spiraled out of control and their prices remain much higher than those of their competition. When disaster strikes, Inga decides to openly take action against the co-op via social media. As her campaign progresses, she soon finds out just how low her adversary is willing to go.

As in Rams, Hákonarson illustrates how the harsh conditions that rural Icelanders face have bred an innate conservatism and a fealty to the status quo, which some hold true to even as it threatens their own well-being. Driven by Egilsdóttir's gritty and moving performance (and featuring a fine turn from Rams star Sigurður Sigurjónsson as the co-op's sleazy, self-assured director), and subtly directed by Hákonarson — one of the region's finest filmmakers — The County brilliantly explores how Iceland's cherished myth that all its citizens are equal can blind some of its hardiest and most independent people to their own exploitation.

ABOUT VALGEIR SIGURÐSSON... Reykjavík-based composer and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson is known for his immersive sound-world, often blurring the lines between contemporary classical writing and electronic production. Recent film projects include Valgeir’s first U.S. feature An Acceptable Loss, a political thriller by Joe Chappell, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as Grímur Hákonarson’s Little Moscow and The County.

Valgeir’s 4th LP DISSONANCE won ‘Album of The Year’ at the 2018 Iceland Music Awards. He has performed his work internationally at festivals, concert halls and clubs, and The New York Times named Dissonance Live among the top shows of the 2017 Sónar Barcelona Festival.

His scores for the environmental documentary Dreamland and Reykjavík City Theatre’s production of MEDEA were nominated for best score at the Edda Awards (also known as the “Icelandic Oscars”), and the Iceland Theatre Awards, respectively. Dust received a special jury mention at the International Rostrum of Composers in 2019.

Walt Disney Records: "THE MANDALORIAN: CHAPTER 5" music by Ludwig Göransson

Walt Disney Records releases the digital soundtrack from “The Mandalorian,” Lucasfilm’s first-ever, live-action series, streaming exclusively on Disney+. The Mandalorian: Chapter 5 digital album features score by Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, Creed) and is available HERE.

The Swedish-born composer’s approach to “The Mandalorian” score and character themes was to combine organic elements from recorders, pianos and guitars in different ways and infuse tech sounds with a cinematic orchestra. Göransson said, "Working on something so fresh and original as ‘The Mandalorian,’ I knew I had to compose something just as exciting. I wanted the score for each episode to be unique so I had to create a big sound world to draw inspiration from. I started my compositional journey away from the computer in the woods and at my small home studio playing live instruments such as recorders, piano and guitar. I took that material back into the computer and added tech elements to make the organic instruments take new shapes. Lastly, I added the cinematic sweep of an 70-piece orchestra to make my compositions breathe and come to life. Working with Jon and the entire team involved in the making of this series was incredibly humbling and collaborative. I’m so excited to share this soundtrack with fans around the world.”

Intrada: "RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN" Music by LALO SCHIFRIN

Intrada returns to the Disney vaults of the '70s with Lalo Schifrin's score to the 1978 live-action sequel, Return from Witch Mountain. The film follows the further adventures of Tony and Tia, now teens, some three years after their introduction in the original 1975 Escape to Witch Mountain. A long-time Disney fan, Schifrin was thrilled at the chance to compose the score for a Disney film. While Witch Mountain was lighter fare than his earlier scores, he didn't want it to be cartoon music. It was also his first foray into electronics, his first score that allowed him to plunge into mixing orchestra with electronics, including the ondes Martenot, an instrument championed by both Maurice Jarre (used in Lawrence of Arabia) and Elmer Bernstein (Ghostbusters). The score brought a musically adult edge to the studio, making the movie a little hipper and proving to Schifrin he could meld orchestra and electronics.

The film was released in mono and the score had never been mixed into stereo until Intrada mixed the 2″ 24-track session masters graciously provided by Disney Studios. This allowed Intrada to produce and master a brand-new two-track stereo mix, perhaps for the very first time, with stunningly vibrant and detailed audio. CD 1 is a presentation of the complete original score, heard in picture sequence. CD 2 is quite simply a bonus presentation of the strongest highlights of the much longer score, unfolding as a tighter listening experience. It is not intended as a replacement for the complete score but rather as an “album” that might have been offered in 1978 had one been released. It is intended for enjoyment when listeners might not have 73 minutes to play the longer program but still desire a satisfying listening experience under 50 minutes.

Return from Witch Mountain's tone was darker than the first film, as money-hungry adults use a mind control device to turn the now teenage siblings against each other. The formidable villains appear in the personages of longtime Dracula, Christopher Lee, and screen legend, Bette Davis. Davis was cast as Letha, the heiress enabler of Lee’s mad scientist, Victor. Anthony James was cast as Letha’s nephew-henchman, Sickle.

Intrada: "DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD" Music by JOHN DEBNEY and GERMAINE FRANCO

Intrada presents the CD soundtrack to what is perhaps one of the most delightful films of 2019 – Paramount Pictures' Dora and the Lost City of Gold. For this colorful, vibrant and self-aware live-action version of the Dora the Explorer cartoon, John Debney (Hocus Pocus) and Germaine Franco (Tag) crafted a score that could easily keep pace with the fast-moving adventure. Scored for large orchestra, the exciting score is as exhilarating and adventurous a listening experience as the film itself, making for one of the year's best scores. Also featured on the CD is the premiere of Bret McKenzie's "Hooray, We Did It!," the celebratory musical number at the end of the film.

Dora (played to perfection by up-and-coming actor Isabela Moner) has grown up in the Peruvian jungle, having many adventures with her cousin Diego, her monkey Boots and her imaginary friends Backpack and Map, and masked villain Swiper. Diego leaves the jungle at age 6, leaving Dora alone. Ten years later, Dora's parents send her to Diego's high school in LA to protect her when they discover the location of the lost city of gold. A fish out of water in every sense, Dora has a hard time fitting in, until she and her friends are kidnapped and taken back to the jungle, where Dora discovers her parents have vanished and it's no longer clear who she can trust as she tries to evade villains and find her parents. Filled with self-referential humor, tongue firmly planted in cheek, Dora and the Lost City of Gold brings back the delight of family adventure films.

Lakeshore Records: "SERVANT" music by Trevor Gureckis

Lakeshore Records is set to release the soundtrack for Servant, a new Apple Original series from Academy Award-nominated director and executive producer M. Night Shyamalan, and created and executive produced by Tony Basgallop, which will premiere November 28th exclusively on Apple TV+. The soundtrack features music by composer Trevor Gureckis (The Goldfinch, Bloodline) and will be released exclusively on Apple Music on November 28th, followed by a digital release on iTunes January 3rd, and all other digital platforms on March 6, 2020.

Beginning November 28th, the first three episodes of Servant will be available to watch exclusively on Apple TV+ in over 100 countries and regions around the world. New episodes will continue to roll out weekly every Friday.

Servant is a new psychological thriller that follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.

Says Gureckis: “The Servant’s musical sonic palate of clanging percussion, prepared piano, wailing bowed instruments, and detuned strings and winds came about from M. Night and I having the unified willingness to take the time to explore as many ideas as possible, in search of the right sound for the series. I started with a rather full orchestral concept but we soon realized that with the whole show taking place in a single house, almost like a play, it needed an intimate sound with small objects. As the series progresses, existential threats develop and likewise the score expands. Hearing one of the early tracks like ‘Welcome’ or ‘Monitor’ with its austere brutalism and then the textural complexity of the final track 'The Servant,’ will give you a sense of the journey we go through within these 10 episodes.”

Apple TV+ is now available in over 100 countries and regions, and is available on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac and other platforms, including online at tv.apple.com, for just $4.99 per month with a seven-day free trial.
Trevor Gureckis is an award-winning composer and producer based in NYC. His work spans film, pop and concert genres. His music often draws on his production experience and classical background, fusing electronics and live instruments in unique ways.

Trevor recently scored the highly-anticipated Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Goldfinch, directed by John Crowley. The film premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.  The score was critically acclaimed; described as "exceptionally fresh and disarmingly different" by The Hollywood Reporter, "stunning" by Paste Magazine, and "elegant as a work of art" by PopSugar.

He is currently scoring Neil Burger’s latest film Voyagers, to be released by Lionsgate. Other notable works include; the Blumhouse thriller Bloodline, HBO’s Vice: Raised by the System, and the EPIX's documentary Election Day. In April, Trevor’s solo album of instrumental and electronic music entitled ‘Corte’ was released on SUPERTRAIN Records.

He produced the electro-pop band My Great Ghost which is featured on the Philip Glass remix album ‘REWORK_’ along with Beck, Cornelius, and Amon Tobin. He has also done remixes and arrangements for artists like Niia, Mr Little Jeans, Mark Ronson and more.

Trevor is a co-owner and ECD of Found Objects, an NYC based artist collective.

Sony Music: "LITTLE WOMEN" music by Alexandre Desplat

Sony Music today releases a new track from the forthcoming LITTLE WOMEN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) by Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and GRAMMY® Award-winning composer ALEXANDRE DESPLAT – listen to “Plumfield” here.  Recorded in New York City under the leadership of Desplat, who conducted a chamber orchestra to perform his original compositions, the score will be available in digital, CD and vinyl formats beginning Friday, December 13 – preorder now.  Written for the screen and directed by Greta Gerwig, Sony Pictures’ Little Women will make its highly-anticipated theatrical debut on Wednesday, December 25.

Of the soundtrack, composer Alexandre Desplat says, “To capture the life of these four young girls on their path to adulthood, I have called in the four hands of two pianists. They are surrounded by a chamber orchestra, which keeps us in the intimate world of these ‘little women.’  We recorded the score in New York City with the most wonderful musicians whose musicality and virtuosity went beyond my expectations.”

“Working with him has been a dream,” adds Greta Gerwig of working with Desplat on the score.  “From the first sketches he sent me to listening to him record the glorious score with an orchestra in New York, every step of the process has been a joy. He has taught me how to work with a composer: how to listen, how to give notes, how to wait for it to develop, how to step away, how to dive in. I am a better filmmaker for having worked with him, and I sincerely hope that it is not the last time.”

“For Little Women, Greta envisioned a musical without lyrics. From the beginning, Alexandre had to be the musical voice of the film,” says Spring Aspers, President of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Music. "The resulting score is both dynamic and intimate making it the perfect complement to this exquisite retelling. I can’t wait for audiences to come together to experience this film.”

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life.  In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms --  is both timeless and timely.  Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Sony Music/Masterworks: "THE TURNING"

KRO Records / Sony Music Masterworks today announce the January 24 release of the official soundtrack for THE TURNING (DreamWorks Pictures).  Produced by Los Angeles singer/songwriter Lawrence Rothman and producer Yves Rothman, the soundtrack features a dumbfounding amount of revered artists, including Courtney Love, Mitski, Soccer Mommy, Empress Of, Vagabon, Warpaint, Cherry Glazerr, Kali Uchis, Alice Glass, girl in red, MUNA, The Aubreys (Finn Wolfhard’s new band) and more (full tracklisting below). Directed by Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Handmaid’s Tale) and starring Finn Wolfhard, Mackenzie Davis and Brooklynn Prince, the film will be released in theaters on January 24.

Of the track, Courtney Love says, “I read ‘The Turn of the Screw’ as a kid, so it’s a genuine privilege to have had the opportunity to work with the genius that is Floria Sigismondi and Lawrence Rothman on this soundtrack – especially as I’m alongside so many other fantastic female artists I respect. I’ve long admired her work, particularly The Runaways and the Marilyn Manson videos. Floria and Lawrence had a clear vision on what they wanted to achieve and it was an honor to be invited into their studio and to become a part of it.”

To help create a completely original soundtrack, Lawrence Rothman called in producer Yves Rothman and they went on to approach all their favorite artists and things fell into place. The majority of the soundtrack was written and recorded at Lawrence’s Los Angeles studio, House of Lux.

Lawrence Rothman explains, “We were both inspired by the classic 90’s soundtracks – Romeo and Juliet, Lost Highway, The Crow, the sessions were chaotic and inspired, it was a fever dream for months. Yves and I are beyond ecstatic to have worked with so many of our favorite artists.”  Lawrence too had a strong connection to the short story that inspired the movie, adding, “‘The Turn of the Screw’ was a seminal piece of literature for me when I was a teen, so when Floria Sigismondi approached me to produce all new and original music for her film, curated like the classic 90s soundtracks, it was a dream come true. I had just started my new record label KRO Records with Yves Rothman and Justin Raisen. I already had a compilation project much like the soundtrack in the works with multiple artists, so the timing was serendipitous.

Sony Music announces the release of A HIDDEN LIFE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by GRAMMY® and EMMY®-award winning composer, conductor and producer JAMES NEWTON HOWARD (The Dark Knight, Blood Diamond, I Am Legend).  Available Friday, December 6, the album features music from the Terrence Malick-directed film, which makes its theatrical debut Friday, December 13 via Fox Searchlight.

Of the soundtrack, composer JAMES NEWTON HOWARD says, “A Hidden Life is a deeply affecting, meditative, and relevant story about love and the moral struggle between a conscientious objector and his wife in a small village in Austria during World War II. The emotional complexity Terrence Malick explores in the film provided a moving and artistically inspiring canvas on which to work. I am deeply grateful to have been able to work again with the extraordinary violinist and my dear friend, James Ehnes, whose profound musicianship transformed each piece that he played on. I would also like to thank Andrew Armstrong for his intimate and beautiful work with all the solo piano on the album.”

Based on real events, from visionary writer-director Terrence Malick, A Hidden Life is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani and children that keeps his spirit alive.

James Newton Howard is an eight time Oscar nominee and one of the industry’s most versatile and in-demand composers. Credited with over 140 motion picture and television scores, Howard’s success reflects the experiences of a rich musical past. Beginning his classical training as a pianist at age four, it was his early work in the pop/rock arena that allowed him to hone his talents as a musician, arranger, songwriter and producer with some of pop’s biggest names including Elton John, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger, Chicago, Toto and Chaka Khan among many others. When he was offered his first film, Head Office in 1985, he knew he had found his calling. Howard’s long list of credits include both Fantastic Beasts films, all four installments of The Hunger Games, Maleficent, The Dark Knight (for which he won the 2009 Grammy Award along with Hans Zimmer), I Am Legend, Blood Diamond, King Kong, Batman Begins, Signs, The Sixth Sense and Pretty Woman.

Varese Sarabande: "THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE" 2LP SET

Music.Film Recordings has announced that the Netflix Original Series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, will get a special album release on vinyl. Fans of The Jim Henson Company’s fantasy series can purchase a 2-LP set in a gatefold jacket, which includes highlights from both the Volume 1 soundtrack, featuring music by composer Daniel Pemberton, and Volume 2 soundtrack with melodies by Pemberton and Samuel Sim, across four sides. The vinyl album is now available for pre-order and releases on February 7th, 2020.

Critical reception for the series has been immensely positive, especially for the original music.  Consequence of Sound reviews how “Pemberton and Sim craft a dark, Celtic-inspired score that … fits the show’s more intricate emotional grace notes.” Collider adds how “composers Daniel Pemberton and Samuel Sim do a bang-up job of establishing atmosphere and mood in a dynamic way.”

Daniel Pemberton remarks how “one of the biggest challenges was trying to create themes that could all work together with one another across so many overlapping stories. So many different characters, places, emotions. It was important to have music that highlighted the differences but could also bring them together.”  He then continues, “The world Jim Henson created all that time ago feels unlike anything else and it has been such an honor to be a part of that story. It has been an immense amount of work - we created just under 8 hours of music for the entire series over almost two years - but such a privilege to work alongside such an immense array of talents and be a part of something so wonderfully unique and special as this new story from The Dark Crystal.”

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is now streaming only on Netflix.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra, with an all new adventure. When three young Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

ABOUT DANIEL PEMBERTON... He is a multi-Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA Award-nominated composer who has been regularly cited as one of the most exciting and original new voices working in modern film scoring today. Constantly working with some of the most renowned names in the industry, Pemberton has already scored projects for the likes of Danny Boyle (Yesterday, Steve Jobs), Ridley Scott (All The Money In The World, The Counsellor), Aaron Sorkin (Molly’s Game), Darren Aronofsky (One Strange Rock) and Guy Ritchie (The Man From UNCLE, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). Pemberton’s most recent project is the mystery adventure TV series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which is now available on Netflix.

His bold writing and unusual and innovative arrangements on scores for movies has seen the soundtracks constantly singled out for critical acclaim whether they are studio films such as such as the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Oceans 8 or smaller independent features such as the Cannes Palm D’Or nominee Mal De Pierres or the feature Motherless Brooklyn from director Edward Norton.

He has received Golden Globe nominations for his mix of opera and electronics in the score to Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs as well as one for Best Original Song – performed and co-written by Iggy Pop - for the Stephen Gaghan film Gold. He was recently nominated for an Emmy for his work on the groundbreaking ‘USS Callister’ episode of ‘Black Mirror’ for Netflix, and was previously honored as Discovery of The Year at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2014 and nominated as Composer Of The Year in 2016.

ABOUT SAMUEL SIM... BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning composer Samuel Sim is widely considered to be one of the most exceptional musical talents of his generation. Early in his career, Samuel quickly stood out from the crowd with his award-winning score for the BBC’s Dunkirk. A whirlwind success followed which soon saw him composing for the Hollywood feature film Awake for the Weinstein Company.

Samuel’s most recent projects include two major upcoming series: 10-part Netflix drama The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance (co-scored with Daniel Pemberton) and The Spanish Princess for New Pictures, four ITV feature films based on Georges Simoneson’s Maigret novels starring Rowan Atkinson, ITV and Left Bank Pictures’ major eight-part drama The Halcyon, BBC’s dark and gritty drama Paula directed by Alex Holmes and ITV’s hugely successful Homefires.

Other recent projects include C4’s drama The Mill (for which Sam’s score received an Ivor Novello nomination), ITV’s Chasing Shadows, and the Charlie Brooker/Daniel Maier comedy creation Touch Of Cloth. He also composed a wonderfully evocative score for the riveting Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story.
