SPARKS & SHADOWS: DOCUMENTARY FEATURE "UNREST" Original Music by Emmy® Award-Winning Composer Bear McCreary

Sparks & Shadows announces the release of the Unrest soundtrack, featuring music by Bear McCreary (Rebel in the Rye, 10 Cloverfield Lane).  The documentary, directed by Jennifer Brea, chronicled her ordeal suffering from ME, more commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This intimate and provocative film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned a Special Jury Prize for editing.

Usually writing music for narrative feature films, McCreary had to take a different approach to compose for a documentary.  “I learned a lot working with Jennifer Brea on Unrest,” said McCreary.  “This is literally her life. So, approaching it as I would a scripted film proved to be pointless.”

Silva Screen Records: Pino Donaggio’s "DON'T LOOK NOW"

In February 2017, Time Out magazine polled actors, producers, directors and movie mavens to create a list of the top 100 British films of all time. Forty-four years after its release, Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now was a comfortable winner. Defined by them as, "a movie whose every glorious frame is bursting with meaning, emotion and mystery, and which stands as the crowning achievement of one of Britain’s true iconoclasts and masters of cinema". Based on a Daphne Du Maurier short story, Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland play a couple who travel to Venice after the tragic death of their daughter.

As well as composing the score, Pino Donaggio performed a substantial portion of it himself. He played the piano pieces, despite the fact that he was not very accomplished at playing the piano. These pieces are usually associated with Christine in the film, and Roeg wanted them to have an innocent sound reminiscent of a little girl learning to play the piano. Donaggio claims that since he was not very good at playing the piano, the pieces had an unsure style to them, perfect for the effect they were trying to capture.

The song - "I Colori Di Dicembere" - was recorded by Iva Zanicchi and released on her 1974 album "Amare, Non Amare". It is not heard in the film and was only included on the Italian pressing of the soundtrack where it was released as "A Venezia... Un Dicembre Rosso Shocking". This new edition of Donaggio's classic score reinstates the song and reverts to the original track sequence and edit.

Don’t Look Now was Pino Donaggio’s debut film score after which he went on to compose music for The Howling, DePalma's Carrie, Body Double, and Dressed To Kill, Piranha, Seed of Chucky.

The cover was the winning design by artist Benio Urbanowicz in a competition organised by Creative Review and BFI Publishing for the 20th anniversary of he BFI Film Classics book on the film. Release date: October 27, 2017

MovieScore Media: "Negative" by Bill Brown

Coinciding with the movie’s American premiere on 19 September, MovieScore Media presents the tension-filled espionage action score of Negative, composed by Bill Brown and featuring guest soloist Robin Finck from Nine Inch Nails. After taking a picture of a woman on the street, amateur photographer Hollis (Simon Quarterman) is shocked when she knocks on his apartment door and threatens his life. Demanding that he and the photograph must leave town with her or she will have to kill him, Hollis reluctantly obliges. While on the run, the woman, Natalie (Katia Winter) reveals she's an ex-MI5 agent that double-crossed a Colombian Cartel. Just as she was about to escape for good, Hollis' photograph surfaced and now the Cartel knows their whereabouts...  Negative is directed by Joshua Caldwell and is produced by Mar Vista Entertainment.

"The concept behind scoring Negative was to create a score that was both ‘dark' and ‘light' at the same time" explains Bill. "It was an interesting challenge and was fun to create that kind of road-trip through the desert score, along with the edgier, synth-driven cues needed for the action and suspense sequences. I used a lot more synth than in previous scores, especially with all of the new modular synth technology I’ve implemented in the studio. One of the highlights of scoring the film was bringing in Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck to help with guitar on the score. The first track is actually the end credits piece and features Robin’s guitars in all their glory."

Composer Bill Brown has achieved great success in all forms of media with his compositions. His passion for composing is followed closely by his interest in cutting-edge sound technology. "In television, Bill scored all nine seasons of CSI: New York and went on to create an epic orchestral-electronic score for the second season of the post-apocalyptic series Dominion. In terms of video games, his list of credits include such well-known franchises as Command and Conquer: Generals, Captain America: Super Soldier and Wolfenstein. MovieScore Media had previously released the composer’s scores for Dark Prophecy, The Devil’s Tomb and Desiree.

MovieScore Media: "The Lion Woman" and "Bobbi Jene" by Uno Helmersson

Coinciding with the film’s release in Germany on September 14, 2017, MovieScore Media presents another sublime score from Scandinavian cinema. Written and directed by Vibeke Idsøe based on the 2006 novel by Norwegian author Erik Fosnes Hansen, The Lion Woman tells the tale of Eva Arctander, a girl who suffers from a rare genetic disorder which makes hairs grow over large parts of her body. Born in 1912 while her mother dies during childbirth, Eva’s father initially tries to hide his daughter, but Eva cannot be held back from achieving her dreams. Despite humiliating examinations and bullying, Eva still falls in love, experiences respect and disrespect and discovers company by joining in a theater group featuring other folk who also suffer from rare diseases. The film follows Eva through ages 7, 14 and 22 in a most unusual coming-of stage story.

Composer Uno Helmersson explores the uplifting story of Eva with an emotionally evocative, thematically rich score exploring all three stages in the girls development in accepting herself. As the composer puts it: “The Lion Woman is a story about being different, trying to make your way through life. It is also a story about the complex relationship between a father and daughter - guilt, pride, judgement and love. The music in general comments both the inner as the outer world of Eva and her voyage. It also emphasize the relationship between Eva and her father Gustav. With its slightly melancholic, driving, beautiful and magic world - it takes you on Eve´s journey through life.”

Besides Lion Woman, MovieScore Media also releases a digital EP for the documentary Bobbi Jene. Directed by Elvira Lind, the film tells the story of dancer Bobbi Jene Smith. By portraying the dilemmas and inevitable consequences of ambition, the picture deals with a woman's fight for independence, a woman trying to succeed in the extremely competitive world of dance. As Uno explains: “The film is just vibrating and trembling, and magic - all about being driven by your call, wherever it may take you or what it takes to get there. It gets under your skin. This was my premise when I dug into the making of the music.” Bobbi Jene gets its limited theatrical release in the US on Friday, Sep 22 by Oscilloscope Pictures.

Uno Helmersson was born in the village of Botsmark in Sweden in 1977. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm in 2006 and has since then worked as composer in the international film and television industry. His credits include contributions to the score of the highly acclaimed television series The Bridge and Armadillo, a multiple award-winning documentary about the war in Afghanistan. More recently his work was featured in the Department Q films The Keeper of Lost Causes and The Absent One - these collaborations with Johan Söderqvist and Patrik Andén have been released by MovieScore Media. His latest release, also issued by the label was is the sport documentary Magnus (2016), detailing the rise of Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen.

Sony Classical: "JANE" Music by Philip Glass

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of JANE (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with a new score of Grammy® and Academy Award ®-nominated composer Philip Glass. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 29th and on CD on October 6th.

Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage that has been tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, Academy award nominated director Brett Morgen (Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck) tells the story of JANE, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall — a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists.

The film, which is distributed by National Geographic Documentary Films, is an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and London Film Festival, among many others and will be released in select theaters starting October 20 in New York and Los Angeles.

“I wanted JANE to be like a cinematic opera where we start off with a prologue that establishes the musical themes of Gombe, and that idea led me to Philip Glass,” said Morgen. There’s this almost dreamlike element to his score. The way the chimpanzees and all the other animals move in sync with the music. It’s a magical component to Jane’s romantic view of nature.”

The avant-garde composer and three-time Oscar® nominee is renowned for his concert works, operas such as “Einstein on the Beach,” and scores for dozens of films, including “Koyaanisqatsi,” “The Hours” and “Notes on a Scandal.” When Morgen showed him a rough cut of the material, Glass was immediately hooked. "I was really impressed with the quality of filmmaking in terms of the actual cinematography, which was stunning,” Glass says. “It was at such a high level technically; it seemed like it had been filmed yesterday.

Sony Classical: "BATTLE OF THE SEXES" Score by Oscar® nominee Nicholas Britell

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of BATTLE OF THE SEXES (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with the score of Academy Award®-nominee composer Nicholas Britell, and an original song by Grammy® and Tony® nominee Sara Bareilles and composer Nicholas Britell.
The soundtrack is now available digitally and on CD on October 20, 2017.

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the “Battle of the Sexes” and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world.  As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.  The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed.  And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue).  Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES is directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), and features a cast including Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell, and Natalie Morales.  The film is produced by Christian Colson, p.g.a., Danny Boyle, p.g.a. and Robert Graf, p.g.a.

Nicholas Britell is an Academy Award-nominated composer, pianist, and producer.

MVD Entertainment Group: The Suspicious Death Of A Minor [Dual Format] (9/26)

In the wake of the success of Dario Argento's ground-breaking giallo The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, numerous other directors stepped forward to try their hand at these lurid murder-mysteries. At the forefront was Sergio Martino (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Torso), whose sensual 70s thrillers starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton are widely celebrated as some of the best the genre has to offer.

The final of Martino's six gialli, The Suspicious Death of a Minor combines conventional giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing 'poliziotteschi' crime thrillers. Claudio Cassinelli (What Have They Done to Your Daughters?) stars as undercover cop Paolo Germi, on the trail of a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of an underage prostitute. But a killer-for-hire is also on the prowl, bumping off witnesses before they have a chance to talk...

Also starring Mel Ferrer (Nightmare City), Barbara Magnolfi (Suspiria) and Jenny Tamburi (The Psychic), and featuring a script by veteran giallo writer Ernesto Gastaldi (All the Colors of the Dark, Death Walks at Midnight), this unique and lesser-known entry in Martino's filmography serves as an essential link between two different movements in Italian popular cinema.

MVD Entertainment Group: "Don't Torture A Duckling"

From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore (The Psychic, The Beyond), comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece Don't Torture a Duckling.

When the sleepy rural village of Accendura is rocked by a series of murders of young boys, the superstitious locals are quick to apportion blame, with the suspects including the local "witch", Maciara (Florinda Bolkan, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin). With the bodies piling up and the community gripped by panic and a thirst for bloody vengeance, two outsiders - city journalist Andrea (Tomas Milian, The Four of the Apocalypse) and spoilt rich girl Patrizia (Barbara Bouchet, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) - team up to crack the case. But before the mystery is solved, more blood will have been spilled, and not all of it belonging to innocents...

Deemed shocking at the time for its brutal violence, depiction of the Catholic Church and themes of child murder and paedophilia, Don't Torture a Duckling is widely regarded today as Fulci's greatest film, rivaling the best of his close rival Dario Argento. Arrow Video is proud to present this uniquely chilling film in its North American high definition debut.

INTRADA: Frederic Talgorn's "ROBOT JOX" [1989]

Intrada presents an expanded reissue of Frederic Talgorn's soaring orchestral score to the 1990 sci-fi film Robot Jox. One of the most ambitions projects produced by Charles Band, it featured a large orchestral score by a composer new to the Empire scene.  But he gave the film an epic sheen making the action on screen perhaps more grandiose than the budget would really allow, making it a very prominent and artistic element of the film.  Worth noting is Talgorn's unique orchestra mix.  While the traditional orchestral layout prevails—violins on the left, violas largely centered, cellos and basses to the right with woodwinds and percussion spread throughout— the brass are unusually placed: trumpets and trombones play behind the high strings; French horns are prominent with the low strings. Much of Talgorn’s writing is in higher registers and this unusual mixing allows brass sonorities to meld with the high strings and horns to counter the low strings. The final mix is vivid and punchy throughout and shines on this new restoration of the score.

The film draws inspiration from Homer’s The Iliad, re-imagining the Greek epic as a Cold War allegory, set in a post-apocalyptic world where war has been outlawed. The battle for territory between the free Market and totalitarian Confederation is reserved for humans piloting towering machines. Market champion Achilles withdraws from competition after a spectator-crushing accident, but when the genetically engineered Athena commandeers his “bot” to take on the Confederation’s crazed Alexander for resource-rich Alaska, he returns to the fray to save his comrade in arms.

Milan Records: "LOVING VINCENT" Music by: Clint Mansell

Loving Vincent is the upcoming biographical animated film from newcomer directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman about Vincent van Gogh's final days and the attempt by an acquaintance of his son (played by Douglas Booth) to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. A film unlike any other, it is entirely hand painted – each of the movie’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on a canvas created using the same techniques as Vincent van Gogh. Good Deed Entertainment is releasing the film on September 22nd in New York before expanding to Los Angeles on September 29th and nationally on October 6th.

In addition to being a wonder for the eyes, Loving Vincent is a treat for the ears. The score is composed by acclaimed composer Clint Mansell (Pi, Requiem For A Dream, Black Swan, Moon, High Rise). Somber yet driven, Mansell’s compositions are filled with the swell of mournful strings pocked with delicate, deliberate notes in countermelodies. A perfect companion to the story of dreadful loss and resigned understanding, Mansell captures a thematic match with music that both enriches the viewing experience yet stands on its own as well. Milan Records will be releasing the soundtrack digitally on September 22nd and on CD September 29th. The soundtrack will also include the track "Starry Starry Night" featured in the end credits, produced by Mansell and performed by Lianne La Havas (Warner Bros).

In addition to CD and digital releases, Loving Vincent will also be made available on vinyl with packaging designed by director Dorota Kobiela. The LP is pressed on a single 180g color vinyl featuring the entirety of Clint Mansell’s score housed in a striking dress jacket with interior sleeve featuring liner notes from Clint. With audio mastered specifically for the vinyl format and a presentation that is unparalleled, “Loving Vincent” will be a must-own for music aficionados. The vinyl release date is October 13th, 2017.

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE ULTIMATE POPEYE - "Deluxe Edition" SOUNDTRACK 2Cd

Well blow me down!  Varèse Sarabande will release the most comprehensive version of the Popeye soundtrack ever assembled, featuring the film’s beloved songs by Harry Nilsson, performed by the cast (including Robin Williams, Shelly Duvall, and Ray Walston), never-before released original score composed by Thomas Pierson, and an entire disc of demos performed by Harry Nilsson. The POPEYE – Deluxe Edition Music From the Motion Picture, which also includes newly-discovered images and extensive liner notes, will be released digitally and on CD on September 29, 2017.

Looking for the father (Ray Walston) who deserted him as a baby, a sailor named Popeye (Robin Williams) journeys to the port town of Sweethaven. Popeye befriends an assortment of eccentrics and falls in love with Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall), who already has a suitor, the bully Bluto (Paul L. Smith). Popeye also discovers an abandoned baby, Swee'Pea, whom he raises as his own. But when the spurned Bluto kidnaps Olive and the child, Popeye takes action, with the help of his magic spinach….

A rare co-production between Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions – the 1980 film POPEYE was a live-action musical version of E.C. Segar’s classic comic strip, directed by Robert Altman and produced by Robert Evans.  The idea was first presented to him by Evans during a party at the producer’s home in mid-1977.  Nilsson’s initial response, “We shared two or three vodkas, and then I told him I didn’t think it was such a good idea to do POPEYE.”

Eventually though he came on board – though the team at Paramount still needed convincing.  In May 1979 Nilsson was given three weeks to write three songs for the film.  He would present home demos for the tracks “He Needs Me,” “I’m Mean,” “Swee’Pea’s Lullaby,” amongst other.

Lakeshore Records: "STRONGER" by Michael Brook

Lakeshore Records will release the STRONGER - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 22, 2017. The album features original music by Michael Brook (BROOKLYN, UNDEFEATED).

In STRONGER, inspired by a true story and based on the New York Times bestseller, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as the working-class Boston man [Jeff Bauman] whose iconic photo from the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing captured the hearts of the world. Stronger is the deeply personal account of the heroic journey that came after that photo – defining a man’s inner courage, a community’s pride, a family’s bond and an unexpectedly tenacious love to overcome devastating adversity.

“The film covers a sort of everyman, Jeff Bauman, who goes through this terrible tragedy experiencing anguish, loss and despair, but ultimately discovers his inner strength on the road to recovery,” Brook described.  It became a bit more important than usual for the opening cue to introduce them to Jeff.  “David Gordon Green [director] and Jake Gyllenhaal, [actor/producer] wanted the opening cue to strongly and instantly establish the emotional perspective that Jeff was a sweet, thoughtful kind of guy who has a fantastic sense of humor.  They felt, and I agreed, that a sweet, almost playful cue could initiate a sort of emotional resonance that would bring a kind of balance to the rest of the film.”

SONY CLASSICAL RELEASES TWO SOUNDTRACKS "THE MTV SERIES TEEN WOLF"

Sony Classical proudly announces the release of two albums celebrating the MTV original series Teen Wolf.  The Teen Wolf – Original Television Soundtrack features beloved indie rock and electronica songs used throughout the series from artists including Young the Giant, Mikky Ekko, Fink, and the haunting cover of “Bad Moon Rising” performed by Mourning Ritual feat. Peter Dreimanis. The Teen Wolf – Original Television Score features original music written by composer Dino Meneghin (Taking the Stage, Eye Candy) including “Teen Wolf Main Title.”

Loosely based on the 1985 film of the same name, MTV's Teen Wolf and stars Tyler Posey as a teenager named Scott McCall, who is bitten by a werewolf and must cope with how it affects his life and the lives of those closest to him, and Dylan O'Brien as "Stiles" Stilinski, Scott's best friend. Teen Wolf first premiered in 2011, and is currently airing its sixth and final season Sundays on MTV in the US and on various channels internationally.

“You can hear over time how the show really developed a sound of its own,” said composer Dino Meneghin.

The show became quickly became a fan favorite of the network, and became known for its song choices as well as its original score.  “I always love to share new bands with viewers, especially with the ones that I am a fan of personally,” said series music supervisor Laura Webb in an interview on MTV.com. She pointed out the song, “Who Are You, Really?” describing: ”I was really excited about using Mikky Ekko in episode 10. His music was sent to me by someone that works on his team, and it always stuck with me. The song that we are using worked so unbelievably well that it still gives me goosebumps.”

Working on all six years of the series allowed Meneghin the opportunity to develop his themes. “Some of them became much broader in scope and importance than they were originally intended to be,” he described. “Scott and Allison's love theme is a good example; it started as a love theme for two characters, but we still used it even after Allison's death to call back to something fundamental about the show. It really came to represent some of the heart of the show, and whenever we'd bring it in, it was very powerful.”

The Teen Wolf – Original Television Soundtrack will be available digitally and on CD September 15, 2017. The Teen Wolf – Original Television Score will be available digitally the same day.

MovieScore Media: "MY NAME IS LENNY" Music by: Ian Arber

MovieScore Media is no stranger to movies about famous sportsmen and its latest release  falls in line with this trend. Directed by Ron Scalpello, My Name is Lenny presents an account on the life of Britain's most notorious bare-knuckle fighter Lenny McLean, also known as "The Guv'nor." Played by Josh Helman (Commander Stryker from the new generation of X-Men films, Mad Max: Fury Road) McLean was an institution of the British fighting scene with a self-proclaimed number of 4000 fights - he also had strong ties to the London underworld, a fact he relished when playing the role of 'Barry The Baptist' in Guy Ritchie's gangster comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. My Name is Lenny tells the extraordinary tale behind the man, the myth, the legend.

Ian Arber is an emerging talent in the film music world. With a growing portfolio of work across a variety of genres, In 2016, he scored two feature documentaries about Olympic legends Usain Bolt (I Am Bolt), and Sir Mo Farah (Mo Farah: No Easy Mile). His documentary scores are characterized by strong musical contributions from musicians, such as hip-hop legend Nas appearing in the opening titles to I Am Bolt and the involvement of co-composer Blur drummer Dave Rowntree on Mo Farah: No Easy Mile.  Other recent works in Arber's filmography include assisting Joe Kraemer on the blockbuster Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation as well providing music for the BBC2 period comedy Quacks.

While making himself well-known through his involvement in sports documentaries, Ian Arber tackles a fictionalized account of a fighter through the same keen insight for human drama. As he explains: “The My Name is Lenny score is a dark, psychological, brutal and epic  journey. The score is made up of distorted tones, experimental percussion and delicate atmospheric guitars and piano. Boxing glove punches were recorded as a percussive element throughout fight scenes. A heavily distorted cello represents Lenny’s abusive stepfather, and Lenny’s girlfriend Val’s influence is accented with a gentle melodic guitar motif in the score’s most delicate moments.”
