Marvel Music/Hollywood Records: "THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER"

Available today, Marvel Music/Hollywood Records releases “Louisiana Hero", the end-credit track from Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier streaming exclusively on Disney+. Music is by composer Henry Jackman (The Comey Rule, Captain America: Civil War). "Louisiana Hero" will be followed by two digital soundtrack releases, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Volume 1 (Episodes 1-3) on April 9 and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Volume 2 (Episodes 3-6) on April 30. Album producers are Kevin Feige, Kari Skogland and Dave Jordan.

Commenting on the track, Jackman said, “Composing ‘Louisiana Hero’ was an exciting challenge. The idea was to take the brief heroic melody used for Falcon in the score for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and develop that motif into a fully realized super hero theme. At the same time I wanted to ground the piece by using elements of Southern blues to reflect the fact that Sam/Falcon comes from Louisiana.”

ABOUT THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER
Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The pair, who came together in the final moments of Avengers: Endgame, team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience. Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the six-episode series also stars Daniel Brühl as Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier debuted worldwide on Disney+ March 19, 2021 to critical acclaim and was ranked as the most watched series premiere ever on Disney+ during its opening weekend, Friday, March 19 – Sunday, March 22, and the most watched title overall for the same time period on a global basis, including in Disney+ Hotstar markets.

ABOUT HENRY JACKMAN
Henry Jackman has established himself as one of today’s top composers by fusing his classical training with his experience as a successful record producer and creator of electronic music.

“I’ve spent a lot of time working in the record industry,” says Jackman, “and for my money being a film composer is way more fun. You can be working on X-Men, and then a movie set in 17th-century Italy. It’s not about showing off what you think is cool or what you want to hear, but ‘what is this movie about, and what would best serve it?’ That process just leads to strange and remarkable places.”

Recent projects include Cherry, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo; Jumanji 2, a continuation of the magical board game adventure story; and Detective Pikachu, following the story of the beloved Pikachu Pokémon character starring Ryan Reynolds. Jackman’s other recent work includes the Oscar®-nominated animated feature film Ralph Breaks the Internet. His diverse credits include Captain America: Civil War, Kong: Skull Island, Captain Phillips, Big Hero 6, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Dino Meneghin: "DOTA: DRAGON'S BLOOD" music by Dino Meneghin

Netflix Original Anime DOTA: Dragon's Blood with a score by composer Dino Meneghin (Teen Wolf, Lore), based on the massively popular online MOBA video game DOTA 2. Ashley Edward Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor, Black Sails) serves as series showrunner and executive producer. Renowned Studio MIR (The Legend of Korra, Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender) is responsible for animation, with Ryu Ki Hyun serving as Co-Executive Producer.

Although the series is set in the fantasy DOTA universe, the score isn't the kind of sweeping, orchestral music typically found in the genre. Composer Dino Meneghin wanted a different kind of score more akin to Tangerine Dream or the old Heavy Metal cartoons. Meneghin set to work creating an entirely unexpected score for the series driven by synths and oftentimes abstract but still able to pull the emotional weight of the story.

Speaking about his experience working on the series, Meneghin said, "DOTA has been one of the best musical experiences of my career so far. Ashley Miller, Netflix, and Studio MIR were collaborative, open-minded, and willing to take chances with the score. Getting a chance to dive so deeply into a world loved by so many players and fans has been an incredible experience, and I hope the viewers will see and hear how much love we put into it."

DOTA: Dragon's Blood tells the story of Davion, a renowned Dragon Knight devoted to wiping the scourge from the face of the world. Following encounters with a powerful, ancient eldwurm as well as the noble Princess Mirana on a secret mission of her own, Davion becomes embroiled in events much larger than he could have ever imagined. The series is based on the hugely successful global video-game franchise DOTA 2 by Valve.

ABOUT DINO MENEGHIN... Dino is best known for his television score for MTV’s Teen Wolf, adapted from the classic Michael J. Fox films, as well as several episodes of the hit Amazon Prime Original horror anthology series Lore. He also wrote the abstract electrosynth score for the Netflix Original Anime DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, based on the massively popular online video game DOTA 2.

In addition to his work in television, Meneghin also scored SNL alumni Taran Killan’s action comedy feature film Killing Gunther with Arnold Schwarzenegger and the short films The Tow and Prom.  Originally from Northern California, at the age of 18, Dino moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. After graduating, he went on to work as a guitarist with artists including Beyoncé, Robin Thicke, Liz Phair, Josh Groban, and Michael Bublé.

Dino lives and works in Malibu with his wife, son, and two pit bulls – all of whom think he has an unhealthy obsession with synthesizers.

Netflix: "SECRET MAGIC CONTROL AGENCY" music by Gabriel Hays

Today, Netflix releases the new animated film Secret Magic Control Agency with a score by Gabriel Hays (Disney's Star Darlings). The animated feature comes from Wizart Animation and CTB Film Company.

Combining the unlikely music of fantasy and spy genres, Hays created an epic score full of adventure, discovery, uncertainty, and MAGIC.

"As a fan of classic spy movies and great fantasy movies - as well as their scores - I was quite drawn to the blending of the two genres in Secret Magic Control Agency,” Hays said about composing for the film. “It’s pretty unexplored territory. From a musical perspective, I was excited to figure out how to blend the swagger of spy movies with the whimsy of fairytales. I had a lot of fun pulling them together.”

Hays adds, “The extra twist that I was especially excited about was that the top agent at the SMCA was Gretel. I mean seriously, what’s cooler than a female secret agent? My two daughters would certainly agree. Until we get a Jane Bond, we have Gretel at the SMCA."

Secret Magic Control Agency follows Hansel and Gretel of fairy tale fame — now acting as secret agents — using magic, clever thinking and teamwork on a mission to find a missing king.

Gabriel Hays is a composer, songwriter and producer based in Los Angeles.

Fascinated by blurring genres and twisting sounds, his music pulls on his experiences writing chamber music and playing divey clubs. He loves combining elements of the orchestra with tactile soundscapes created by an ever-growing collection of synths, vintage instruments and processors.
He is most well-known for writing music for animation including numerous Disney projects such as the As Told By Emoji series, Star Darlings and Whisker Haven. He has also contributed music to numerous other animated series, including Puppy Dog Pals (Disney), Pickle and Peanut (Disney), We Bare Bears (Cartoon Network) and Voltron (Dreamworks) among others.

On the dramatic side Gabriel has written for films, TV shows and documentaries including Half the Sky (PBS), A Path Appears (PBS) 7 Deadly Sins (Showtime) and Travis (Amazon) among many others.

Beyond music for media, Gabriel is a co-founder of the Images Salon series which had their debut concert featuring the fantastic Lyris Quartet on March 2, 2020 right before everything changed.  Gabriel debuted his dynamic new piece there’s not even enough room to be anywhere.

In addition to his work as a composer, Gabriel has worked with a wide variety of producers, artists and songwriters including Akoya Afrobeat, Gabriel Roth, Joe Blaney, The Batterie, Chris Lind, Mieka Pauley as well as his own Shortwave Sunshine.

He got his start in film scoring in Los Angeles working as an assistant and arranger at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions.

Originally from Santa Fe, NM, Gabriel has an MFA in composition from NYU and a BM from Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

MVD Entertainment Group: "DONNIE DARKO" [4K UHD]

28 Days. 6 Hours. 42 Minutes 12 Seconds... That is When the World Will End.  Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science fiction, Spielbergian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template - and the high-water mark - with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium.

Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days, 06 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank's maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum.

Described by its director as "The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick", Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast - pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katharine Ross, and television favorite Noah Wyle - and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran. This brand-new 4K restoration, carried out exclusively for this release by Arrow Films, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

MVD Entertainment Group: "DEATH HAS BLUE EYES" [Blu-ray]

Love Was Her Need. Murder her deed. Death Has Blue Eyes is a gripping paranormal action thriller with shades of giallo from the director of the cult classic video nasty Island of Death (1976).

Geraldine blackmails the two cheeky bachelor boys into acting as bodyguards for Christine, whom it transpires has telepathic abilities and has had her eye on them for some time. After fleeing from a series of assassination attempts, it soon becomes clear that Geraldine herself might not be quite whom she seems, as the two young men find themselves caught up in a political conspiracy of international dimensions. In his debut feature, maverick filmmaker Nico Mastorakis presents us with a generous meze of non-stop car, bike and helicopter chases, a bevy of beautiful girls with guns, psychic thrills and Cold War political intrigue set against the picturesque landscapes of 70s Greece, all presented for the very first time in a new HD master in both widescreen and full-frame versions.

MovieScore Media: "SENIOR MOMENT" music by Laura Karpman

MovieScore Media's latest release is the courtesy of five-time Emmy winning composer Laura Karpman (Lovecraft Country, Taken), who provided a delightful caper comedy score to Giorgio Serafini's Senior Moment. Starring William Shatner, Christopher Lloyd and Jean Smart, the film follows the trials and tribulations of retired NASA pilot Victor Martin (Shatner) who has just been stripped of his driver's license. No he must must not only battle with the DMV, but he he is also forced to find new ways to navigate love and life without his beloved vintage Porsche.

“Senior Moment is a delightful film that is both a cool caper and a great love story,” explains Laura Karpman about what she loved the most about the project. “At its core, it is a film that, with humor and love, explores the dignity of aging. I had a blast with this project; bringing up my jazz chops, re-mixing & playing with source cues, and writing a love theme based on a Viennese waltz for a couple that was always meant to be!” The resulting score will sure to delight those fans who couldn't get enough of the caper sounds of David Holmes (the Ocean's 11 trilogy) or the entire heist genre with its strong jazz, soul and hip-hop influences.

As the first American woman composer inducted in the music branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, Laura Karpman has been a fierce champion for inclusion in Hollywood by founding the Alliance for Women Film Composers. Across concert halls, she is well-known for her Grammy award-winning album, Ask Your Mama, a multimedia opera based on the iconic cycle of poems by Langston Hughes. In terms of film music, her most recent credits include the HBO hit series Lovecraft Country, the Oscar-nominated documentary Walk Run Cha-Cha and the Discovery Channel docuseries Why We Hate, for which she won an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special. While her previous Emmy winds were for documentaries Senior Moment proves that Karpman does wonderful work in romantic movies as well. [https://moviescoremedia.com/newsite/]

MovieScore Media: "THE VAULT" music by Arnau Bataller

MovieScore Media’s latest release from Spain offers a curious blend of a heist movies and an inspirational sports story with Arnau Bataller’s intense action hybrid score for The Vault (also known as Way Down) capturing two exciting events at the same time. Directed by Jaume Balagueró, the film stars Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel) as ace engineer Thom Laybrick fascinated by the complexities of a vault in The Bank of Spain. When he learns of a legendary stored treasure kept there for ten days, Thom wants in and uses a window of 105 minutes to get in - the 2010 Football World Cup finals between Spain and The Netherlands which distracts the bank’s employees.

“The music of The Vault is the sum of many musical ingredients mixed to obtain a fresh, exciting cocktail that leaves a good taste in the mouth of the audience. We start putting the sound of the viola da gamba representing some historical elements, Then We add a few drops of "passion", the force that moves our protagonists represented by a theme played by strings. We continue with touches of thriller and action, planning the robbery, high-tech equipment, accompanied by lines of pulsing synthesizers, hang drums, guitars, and keyboards. And we finish by sprinkling some epic music for our protagonists, who face all sorts of problems while most people in Spain were celebrating a historical moment: the victory of the 2010 Soccer’s World Cup 2010. Agitate and Serve fresh.”

Arnau Bataller originally studied to play the violin and got a degree on the instrument in 1998 – then he decided to specialize in film music, studying the art form at the prestigious University of Southern California. Since graduating in 2002, Arnau has worked on countless American and Spanish projects. Some of his most notable works include José Luis Alemán’s H.P. Lovecraft-inspired horror films The Valdemar Legacy (2010) and The Valdemar Legacy II: The Forbidden Shadow (2010), the latter of which is available from MovieScore Media, while Screamworks Records has released the music for Julio Martí’s The Brotherhood (2014) as well as music from [REC]3: Genesis (2012) and [Rec]4 : Apocalipsis (2014).  [https://moviescoremedia.com/newsite/]

Intrada: "FACE OF A FUGITIVE" Music Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH

Intrada announces the premiere release of Jerry Goldsmith's score for Face of a Fugitive, the recording of which was long thought lost. Goldsmith's music for this 1959 Columbia western was one of the earliest in his theatrical career (and first color project!), preceded only by Black Patch and City of Fear. It was, however, his first use of the full resources of a standard symphony orchestra, since prior scores relied on his savvy for using selective ensembles due to limited budgets. Goldsmith was determined to produce a score that would grab the audience's attention right from the first notes. The score opens with an urgent brass fanfare, then takes that fanfare through a series of tortured variations. It's just the start of a tense, percussive score, with moments of warmth, lilting romance throughout and gripping action writing—all hints of where the composer would go with his budding theatrical career.

While the recording sessions had been elusive for years, as luck would have it—a lot of luck—the print takes for the film showed up in crisp mono sound courtesy of the Sony Pictures vaults. Given the age, the sound quality is excellent, with only minor degrees of wear and tear.

The story starts as safe-cracker Jim Larsen (Fred MacMurray) is escorted to prison by a friendly deputy sheriff. Larsen manages to turn the tables on the deputy in a bid to escape, only to find his brother Danny (Roy Hayes) arriving with his own intentions to free Larsen. In the confusion Danny and the deputy exchange gunfire, the deputy is killed and Danny gravely wounded. The Larsen brothers board a train to the next town, but Danny dies en route, leaving Larsen a fugitive saddled with the murder of the deputy. Larsen passes himself off as a mining inspector in the next town and befriends the local sheriff. The town is involved in a conflict with a ruthless cattle baron who has claimed government land by illegally fencing it. With the town cordoned off and knowing that wanted posters bearing his likeness will soon reveal him as the escaped fugitive, Larsen hides in plain sight, backing the sheriff against the cattle baron and his gang.

Varèse Sarabande Records: VARESE CLUB TITLES... "ALONG CAME A SPIDER" and "THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW" [2CD] and both EXPANDED!

Varèse Sarabande Records is thrilled to announce its March 2021 CD Club titles: Along Came a Spider (The Deluxe Edition) by Jerry Goldsmith and The Serpent and the Rainbow (The Deluxe Edition) by Brad Fiedel. These titles are available today, March 19, exclusively on VareseSarabande.com and internationally on Intl.VareseSarabande.com. The CD Club launched its official start in 1989 and has been a staple of the label ever since, relaunching classic titles from renowned composers such as John Williams and Ennio Morricone, among many others.

Along Came a Spider (The Deluxe Edition): One of Academy Award®-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith’s final film scores comes to the CD Club in a long-awaited Deluxe Edition: Along Came a Spider (2001), which is Paramount Pictures’ second film adaptation of author James Patterson’s thriller novels. Morgan Freeman reprised his role as Alex Cross (from Kiss the Girls), teaming up with Monica Potter as a Secret Service agent in search of a U.S. Senator’s daughter, who is kidnapped by a twisted adversary.

Goldsmith’s Along Came a Spider score pulses and twitches with uneasy throbs, lurching into orchestral action for moments of shock and violence, and nobly sets a powerful French horn theme (for the forces of good) against a brooding tapestry of darkness—all while the clock ticks away on a young victim’s life. Released as a 35-minute CD by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the film’s release, Along Came a Spider is expanded for the Deluxe Edition to the complete 64-minute score, in film sequence. A bonus track of outtakes (including Goldsmith’s chit-chat on the scoring stage) is curated by Goldsmith’s longtime friend, recording engineer and album producer Bruce Botnick.

Goldsmith reteamed with New Zealand-born director Lee Tamahori, for whom he scored The Edge (1997), and provided a tense, taut score in his thriller wheelhouse. From his earliest days scoring television, to 1970s landmarks like Capricorn One and Coma, to the granddaddy of the 1990s sex thrillers (Basic Instinct), no composer was as fluent or effective with the thriller genre as Goldsmith. By 2001, the composer had modernized and refined his suspense style to the point where there was not a single wasted note.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (The Deluxe Edition): From the earliest days of the Varèse Sarabande CD catalog comes a Deluxe Edition of an oft-requested horror score by Brad Fiedel: The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). The film is directed by horror icon Wes Craven, starring Bill Pullman as a doctor sent to Haiti to investigate a possible drug used in Haitian Vodou to create a real-world zombie. Filmed on location in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the film has been lauded for its authentic setting, grounded take on the Vodou/zombie myth, and Craven’s effective horror atmospherics—including a memorable and moody score by Brad Fiedel.

For The Serpent and the Rainbow, Fiedel created hypnotic soundscapes from his keyboards, including wood and metallic percussion elements, synthesized hawk screams and choral samples. He perfectly evoked the Haitian setting and Vodou aesthetic while providing a disturbing blanket of doom and dread—but also a unique sense of almost uplifting melody and spirituality.

This 2-CD set Deluxe Edition features, on disc one, a new program of Fiedel’s expanded score, restored from film mixes in the Universal Pictures vaults by Mike Matessino; and on disc two, the original 1988 Varèse Sarabande soundtrack album with a bonus selection of additional music by Nigerian drummer and recording artist Michael Babatunde Olatunji. Some of the Olatunji selections are heard in the film, while others were part of a rejected score. The album also features liner notes by Randall D. Larson, with new interview comments by Fiedel.

The mid to late 1980s was arguably Fiedel’s most prolific and influential period. Working from his home studio, the composer used cutting-edge synthesizers and samplers to create his own, highly personalized sonic atmospheres, with custom-made colors and a mature tone that helped distinguish some of the biggest hits of the period (The Terminator, Fright Night, The Big Easy, The Accused).

Of the soundtrack, composer JOSEPH SHIRLEY says, "Bad Trip was definitely a trip to say the least.  Working with Kitao Sakurai and Eric André was more like a journey.  We explored a vast number of genres and styles in the course of scoring the film - from traditional Hollywood musicals, to contemporary Hip Hop, to heartfelt buddy moments, and everything in between.  It was a road trip of music in and of itself. We can't overstate how fun, unpredictable, and hilarious the process was to work with Kitao and Eric on this movie, and we hope the audience will have just as much fun as we did making it."

Real pranks. Real People. Real Movie. From one of the guys that brought you Jackass and Bad Grandpa, this hidden camera comedy follows two best friends as they go on a cross-country road trip full of hilarious, inventive pranks, pulling its real-life audience into the mayhem. ABOUT LUDWIG GÖRANSSON

In a career spanning only 12 years, Ludwig Göransson has amassed an impressive resume in both the recording and motion picture industries, earning an Academy Award®, an Emmy® Award, multiple GRAMMY Awards® and countless other nominations. After working as an assistant to composer Theodore Shapiro, Göransson got his first big break writing music for the NBC television series Community. This led to a friendship and collaboration with Donald Glover, who performs under the stage name Childish Gambino, on several studio albums including Because the Internet and Awaken, My Love. Göransson has been nominated for six GRAMMYs® with Childish Gambino, and won two in 2019 for the Billboard Hot 100 Number One hit song “This Is America,” which became a cultural phenomenon and garnered world-wide acclaim.

While pursuing his masters degree in film scoring at USC, Göransson met his other longtime collaborator, director Ryan Coogler, when he scored his short film Locks. Over the next nine years, Göransson would score all three of Coogler’s feature films. Much like iconic filmmaking duos Hitchcock and Herrmann or Spielberg and Williams, Coogler’s diverse filmography has allowed Göransson to show his range as a composer, writing understated melodies for Fruitvale Station, hyping up audiences for Creed, and infusing African percussion into his themes for Black Panther.

Göransson has accumulated success in a variety of other films including the box office smash Venom and Pixar’s Inner Workings. In 2019, Göransson earned multiple awards and nominations for his score for Black Panther including a Golden Globe® nomination, a GRAMMY Award® for Best Score Soundtrack, and an Academy Award® for Best Original Score. He won two GRAMMY Awards® for his song “This is America”, which he co-wrote and co-produced with frequent collaborator Childish Gambino.

Most recently, Göransson completed the score for Season 2 of The Mandalorian, LucasFilm’s first Star Wars live-action series helmed by director Jon Favreau, streaming exclusively on Disney+.  In September 2020, he won his first Emmy® Award for his work on the series.  Göransson also composed the music for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which premiered late summer 2020.  In addition, he co-wrote and co-produced the songs for DreamWorks’ Trolls World Tour with Justin Timberlake, which exceeded expectations with its history-making digital release in April 2020, racking up nearly $100 million in sales in just three weeks.

Intrada: "LEGAL EAGLES" Music Composed and Conducted by ELMER BERNSTEIN

Intrada's latest release features Elmer Bernstein's score to the 1986 mystery/romance/thriller Legal Eagles. Continuing his fruitful relationship with director Ivan Reitman (including collaborations on Animal House and Ghostbusters), Legal Eagles would be the last time the two worked together. The score for their last teaming is a charming one, with a warm, playful main theme. Yet don't be deceived: as with any part thriller, there is also suspense and action, as well as a strained, almost tortured theme for Chelsea Reardon. In many respects the score harkens back to his work in the '60s.

The album features the complete program released by MCA Records back in 1986 from source elements stored in the UMG vaults in excellent condition.

In the film, Robert Redford plays a dedicated lawyer in line for the top job as New York City’s District Attorney. Divorced but enjoying a great relationship with his precocious daughter, he finds his life turned upside down by two quite different women — Laura Kelly, an eccentric defense attorney notorious for once putting a dog on the witness stand; and her client Chelsea Deardon, a beautiful yet troubled performance artist convinced that her artist father was murdered by associates who stole his paintings but claimed they were destroyed in a fire. Logan finds himself attracted to both women, while the trio finds their lives in danger as they uncover a decades-old criminal conspiracy.

Lakeshore Records: "UNDERPLAYED" music by Kate Simko

Lakeshore Records is set to release Underplayed—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to the critically acclaimed documentary featuring original music by DJ, music producer and London Electronic Orchestra leader Kate Simko (We Believe in Dinosaurs, 20 weeks). The soundtrack will be released digitally worldwide on March 5.

Kate Simko, since the age of 18 growing up in Chicago, has been resolutely dedicated to her music endeavors whether as an electronic musician, composer, producer or as internationally touring DJ.  For the documentary film Underplayed, her wide-ranging electronic compositions—from lushly ambient, to classic Detroit-style techno—weave together the story of the female producers carving their place in the electronic music industry.

The film directed by Stacey Lee follows top DJ’s Rezz, Alison Wonderland, Tokimonsta, NERVO, Tygapaw and more as they share their struggles and successes in electronic dance music. The film will be available on the Amazon Music Mobile App and Amazon Prime Video on Monday, March 8—International Women’s Day.

“Underground dance culture was created as a safe space for everyone- regardless of ethnic background, economic standing, gender, and sexual preference. Yet there have always been very few female DJ’s, and the handful that make it to the top are often scrutinized and held to different standards than men. This is something I witnessed coming up in the Chicago scene, so it was really an honor and a full circle moment for me to score Underplayed.”

Simko’s elegant yet bold score seamlessly weaves in-and-out of diverse sub-genres of electronic music, with gritty textures, emotive melodies, and classic-style analog bass bubbling beneath the storyline of the film.  From vintage New-style York disco beats to lush morphing synth soundscapes, the score reflects Simko’s experience as an ardent vinyl record collector and international DJ.

An official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, Underplayed presents a portrait of the current status of the gender, ethnic, and sexual equality issues through the lens of the female pioneers, next-generation artists, and industry leaders who are championing a more diverse pool of role models for future generations.  Electronic music was born from the ideals of diversity, community, and inclusivity; yet in 2019, women made up only 7% of Billboard’s Top 100 DJs and less than 3% of production and technical roles in the music industry. Ultimately, the film explores how gender disparity happens, a theme that transcends music and finds relevance in many of today’s industries.

“Director Stacey Lee tastefully pieces together the history of women carving a place in the music industry, which is not an easy feat.  We get a behind-the-scenes look at the the incredible raw talent, relentless hard work, and self-belief it took for 5 female DJs to achieve their dreams in an industry where 95% of the participants are men.”

ABOUT KATE SIMKO... American composer, electronic music producer, and leader of her ensemble London Electronic Orchestra, Kate Simko blends distinctive influences from her hometown, Chicago, and formal training in classical piano and jazz.

Kate’s career started in Los Angeles interning on feature films, and then took a surprise turn as her live electronic music and DJ career took off. She spent her twenties performing at revered clubs and festivals across the globe, from underground venues in Berlin and Tokyo to the Montreal Jazz Festival and Millennium Park in Chicago. A prolific producer, her back catalogue includes three albums, numerous EPs, film soundtracks and original classical compositions. Notable releases include her remix of Philip Glass’s Houston Skyline reaching the Billboard Top 100 Classical Chart and her house track ‘Go On Then’ ending 2011 in the Beatport Top 10 Deep House chart.

Refocusing on her passion for film composition, Kate moved to London, where she completed a Masters in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music in 2014. While at the RCM she conceived her innovative classical-electronic ensemble, the all-female London Electronic Orchestra. Kate & LEO have performed at venues and festivals worldwide, including the Royal Albert Hall, the National Gallery, iTunes festival, Bestival, MIDEM in Cannes, Le Poisson Rouge in New York and Wonderfruit in Thailand, among others.

The ensemble’s self-titled album Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra was released via The Vinyl Factory in 2016 to critical acclaim. In 2018, Kate teamed up with superstar electronic music producer and DJ Jamie Jones and sold out the Barbican Centre with their ‘Opus 1’ concert featuring a 28-piece LEO ensemble. The following year she orchestrated a concert for techno pioneer Carl Craig and the 70-piece Chineke! Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, and is now Craig’s lead arranger, working with the orchestras at all of his live classical-electronic shows.
Distinguished by classic evolving synths, spatial depth, and warm electronics blended with live orchestral instruments, Kate’s music to picture has accompanied various feature films, including 20 Weeks, The Atom Smashers (PBS Independent Lens), Banana Land: Blood, Bullets & Poison, BBC China, Sacred Journeys (PBS), and We Believe In Dinosaurs (PBS Independent Lens), which was released on Lakeshore Records in 2019. In Autumn 2020 Kate joined the faculty of her alma mater, the Royal College of Music, as a professor of Composition for Screen.

Milan Records and Sony Music Masterworks: "PACIFIC RIM: THE BLACK" (MUSIC FROM THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL ANIME SERIES) by composer BRANDON CAMPBELL

Milan Records and Sony Music Masterworks today announce the Friday, March 5 release of PACIFIC RIM: THE BLACK (MUSIC FROM THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL ANIME SERIES) by composer BRANDON CAMPBELL.  Available for preorder now, the album features score music written by Campbell for Netflix’s newest anime series from Legendary Television and based on Legendary and Guillermo del Toro’s blockbuster film franchise Pacific Rim.  Making its debut alongside the album preorder is lead single “The Black,” featured as the main title theme in the show’s official trailer – listen here.  Continuing the tale of epic battles between monsters and robots in an exciting new style, Pacific Rim: The Black will be released worldwide on Thursday, March 4 exclusively on Netflix.

Of the soundtrack, composer BRANDON CAMPBELL says, “Our showrunner, Greg Johnson, wanted a score that encompassed bits of DNA from the original Pacific Rim film while still being unique enough to support the struggles and triumphs of Taylor and Hailey.  We created a hybrid orchestral score with the heavy themes and melodic material that will hopefully resonate with Pacific Rim fans, while including more intimate and emotional musical moments that accompany our characters as they make their way across The Black.  I hope my music brings you back into the world of the awesome power of the Kaiju and Jaeger, but also into the hearts of Taylor and Hailey.”

The album marks the first release under a new, multi-year agreement between Milan Records/Sony Music Masterworks and Legendary Television to collaborate on future soundtrack releases.  Under the new agreement, Milan Records will have the exclusive right to distribute all soundtrack albums released by Legendary Television for its television shows and series, supporting the studio with the global distribution, marketing and promotion of these soundtrack titles.  The new agreement further establishes Milan Records’ presence as an international leader in film and television scores and soundtracks, expanding its already impressive catalogue of critically-acclaimed titles with the quality genre and character-driven projects synonymous with Legendary Television.

Of the agreement, JC CHAMBOREDON, Senior Vice President of Milan Records, says: “Legendary is one of the most recognizable names around the world for fans of exciting, quality entertainment.  Anytime their logo pops up on a screen, we all know we are about to enter an unforgettable ride.  It is a true honor to be able to partner with Legendary Television and to bring their epic and exciting soundtracks to fans across the world.”

STEFAN KARRER, Vice President of Milan Records, adds: “After working with Legendary Films on several albums, most recently Enola Holmes, this is an exciting new opportunity to expand our relationship and release soundtrack albums to the company’s high-quality television productions.”

MAUREEN MURPHY, Vice President, Marketing of Legendary Television, comments: “We are thrilled to expand our relationship with Milan Records/Sony Music Masterworks, a true leader in their industry, to produce soundtracks for our current and future television series. Our teams share a passion for the role of music and scores to enhance not only the storytelling, but also the fan experience for our shows.

Milan Records: "CHAOS WALKING" music by Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts

Milan Records announces the April 2 release of CHAOS WALKING (ORIGINAL SCORE) with music by Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts.  Available for preorder now, the album features score music from the highly anticipated film.  The score continues a long tradition of collaborations between the two-time Academy Award®-nominated composers Beltrami and Roberts, who also garnered an Emmy® Award together for their work on Free Solo.

Of the soundtrack, Beltrami and Roberts say, “The score for Chaos Walking provided a unique opportunity for us to create a musical language for a fictitious world that was simultaneously both familiar and alien, and in so doing, explore crossing genres that are rarely combined. There are otherworldly sci-fi elements, as well as classic gritty western themes. We had a lot of fun implementing new instruments that would define this cross pollination.  It was an adventure to live in this new musical world.”

To herald the release of the album, lead singles “Friendship Theme” and “Posse on the Move / Exploring the Ship” arrive today – listen here.  “Friendship Theme” stirs up longing through emotionally charged strings. With its slow tempo, the track ebbs between serious and sweet passages buoyed by bold and purposeful forward motion. Representing the other end of the spectrum, “Posse on the Move / Exploring The Ship” hinges on evocative, yet eerie synthesizers as a dark crescendo culminates on a fleeting moment of brooding intensity.

In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “the Noise” – a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened – and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets.  From the director of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow and based on the best-selling novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland star with Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo in Chaos Walking.

Directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford, based upon the book “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Patrick Ness, Chaos Walking is produced by Doug Davison, Allison Shearmur, Erwin Stoff, and Alison Winter.

Milan Records: "COME TRUE" music by ELECTRIC YOUTH and PILOTPRIEST

Milan Records today announces the March 12 release of COME TRUE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK), an album of music from IFC Midnight’s latest sci-fi thriller by ELECTRIC YOUTH and PILOTPRIEST.  Available for pre-order now, the album includes a mix of original music by Electric Youth as well as additional score music composed in partnership with Come True director Anthony Scott Burns under his music-making alias Pilotpriest.  Come True premieres in theatres and on demand Friday, March 12 from IFC Midnight.

Making its debut today alongside album pre-order is one of Electric Youth’s original tracks, “Modern Fears,” which showcases the composing duo’s signature blend of melodic strings and synthesized vocals to create one of the film’s most resonating musical moments – listen here.  For the larger musical universe of Come True, Electric Youth and Pilotpriest have crafted a score of moving live strings, ethereal synthesizers and emotive vocals, with the 15-track collection also including Electric Youth’s original title song “Come True” as well as new versions of previously recorded songs re-worked for several of the film’s pivotal scenes.  In addition to the soundtrack’s digital release, the album will be made available in vinyl format exclusively via Waxwork Records this spring.

Of the soundtrack, ELECTRIC YOUTH says, “Working with Anthony Scott Burns again meant working with a director so much on the same page as us, someone who likes to work from feeling the same way we do.  To evoke the deeply visceral and immersive quality of the film, we started on the music before the script was even finished, so that the film would be completed with much of the music already a part of its DNA.  That allowed the emotional and internal core of our main character Sarah to be expressed in a way it wouldn’t have otherwise.  We created much of the score in direct musical collaboration with the director (under his music making alias Pilotpriest), a unique opportunity that made for a deeply personal result, for what is a deeply personal film for Anthony. The musical result was something that feels internal and ancient, something otherworldly but from within.”

Looking for an escape from her recurring nightmares, 18-year-old Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone) submits to a university sleep study, but soon realizes she’s become the conduit to a frightening new discovery.  Dreams twist and nightmares come true in this mind-altering new work of science-fiction from Anthony Scott Burns (OUR HOUSE) that haunts the space between wakefulness and sleep. COME TRUE is an unforgettable cinematic dream well worth the submersion.

ABOUT ELECTRIC YOUTH... There is an emotive quality that music by Electric Youth brings to a film.  Their scores, with their signature blend of melodic string sections and synthesized soundscapes, are birthed out of a lifelong passion for cinema, a love they’ve shared together since first meeting at the age of 10.  And since first breaking through with the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 Academy Award nominated film Drive, where their now iconic theme song “A Real Hero” scored pivotal scenes and found chart topping and critical acclaim, Electric Youth haven’t slowed down.  The Toronto/LA duo's widescreen synth pop continues to influence and define the stylish, synthesizer based sound that has flourished for a decade now.  This is evident on their studio albums, from their debut Innerworld, which cemented the band’s reputation as a leading voice in the intricate mix of pop and electronic elements (hailed by Rolling Stone as “euphoric, wistful pop”), to their most recent Memory Emotion, nominated for Electronic Album of the Year at the 2020 JUNOS.  But that only describes one side of their musical landscape, as like the fellow recording artist turned composer duo of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross before them, Electric Youth’s Austin Garrick & Bronwyn Griffin craft scores that go beyond the sounds found on their acclaimed studio albums, to seamlessly combine the orchestral and the electronic, the traditional and the modern, with a timeless melodic throughline distinctly their own.  This has resulted in a diverse range of scores, songs and collaborations to date, from work on further projects with Nicolas Winding Refn (including 2016’s horror-thriller Neon Demon), to Oscar Winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Async Remodels, from action-thriller Taken 2 to Netflix teen romantic comedy The Perfect Date and teen drama Riverdale.

ABOUT PILOTPRIEST (ANTHONY SCOTT BURNS)... Pilotpriest is the music-making moniker of writer, director, cinematographer, editor, VFX and composer Anthony Scott Burns.  Under this pseudonym, he has released a number of critically successful albums and EPs, including the cult vinyl hit Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which was released on the celebrated soundtrack label Waxwork Records.  He has just completed another upcoming soundtrack for the feature film The Education of Fred Fitzell starring Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Maika Monroe (It Follows).

A filmmaker from the new school, Burns is an autodidactic artist that derives inspiration from the simplest motivation: to create art on his own terms. He shoots, edits, scores, writes, designs, and completes the brunt of the post-work on his projects.  Born in Kitchener, Ontario, and based in Toronto, Burns has been drawn to filmmaking since a young age. He started his professional career in graphic design and was a Senior Designer at MTV Canada and worked in the commercial sector before focusing on his original films.

He first made his name known with the self-release of the viral fan short film Tron: Destiny in 2011 and followed it up with the short Manifold, which went on to world premiere at the 2013 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. The “tech-noir narrative” starred iconic character actor Stephen McHattie and was widely celebrated on the circuit and on release. The attention garnered from his shorts brought Burns into the mix for a number of A-list projects and led to him being called “the next big thing” by The Hollywood Reporter. In 2014 he directed an episode of Vincenzo Natali’s show Darknet and in 2016 contributed to Kevin Smith’s horror anthology Holidays with the acclaimed segment “Father’s Day.” Burns’ feature debut Our House world premiered at the 2018 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal was released later that year by IFC Midnight.

In 2020 Burns’ sophomore feature, Come True, starring Julia Sarah Stone (Honey Bee) and Landon Liboiron (Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare), was selected to world premiere at the digital edition of Fantasia.
