Wojciech Kilar [1932-2013]

The vast majority of Wojciech Kilar's work remains undiscovered by the music public at large, despite having written music for well over 100 films, including: Bram Stoker's Dracula, Death and the Maiden, The Portrait of a Lady, The Ninth Gate, Pan Tadeusz, The Pianist, Zemsta, and We Own the Night.

Rest in Peace...

Happy Holidays!... Welcome in 2014!

 -------------------------
A greeting card is an illustrated, folded card featuring an expression of friendship or other sentiment. Although greeting cards are usually given on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they are also sent to convey thanks or express other feeling. Greeting cards, usually packaged with an envelope, come in a variety of styles. There are both mass-produced as well as handmade versions that are distributed by hundreds of companies large and small. While typically inexpensive, more elaborate cards with die-cuts or glued-on decorations may be more expensive.

Let's have another great year of music, books and films I know I along with the Howlin' Wolf Family will be. Thank you to all the labels, film companies, writers, artist and anyone who has provided us with a world of talent. We have some great things coming and our label friends have all ready started releasing soundtracks/scores for the new year...

It is going to be awesome!

MSM/Kronos: Anne and Alet [2013] - Mark Candasamy

In Norway late in the 18th century, the young household servants Anne and Alet Christophersdatter, from a peaceful rural community in the far south of Norway, poisoned a number of their employees with arsenic. They were later sentenced to death by beheading, in front of a large crowd of several thousand people traveling from near and far to witness the event, which was reported to have been a particularly cruel and violent execution.

The story has since become incorporated into local folklore. The many mysterious circumstances, curiosity about motive, and the fact that this happened to two beautiful young girls, has inspired literature and historians to research the events and the sociological terms of society during the 18th century. The story is well known for being adapted into Gabriel Scott’s novel “The Iron Burden” (1915).

The film intercuts between reconstructions of the 18th century events and environment - with actors, hundreds of extras, elaborate costume designs, and cinematic photography - and interviews with historians, scholars, and people from the local community who have grown up with the story as part of their community’s identity. The documentary is narrated by Norwegian actor Helge Jordal.

Anne and Alet marks the third collaboration between composer Mark Candasamy and director Stephan Hergel and is their first documentary together. The direction the production took early on required a romantic approach to the music, with the film’s vivid photography and beautiful landscape depictions contrasting the dark contents of its story. For the execution scene itself - an ambitious and violent reconstruction of the beheadings, religious procedures, prayers, and crowd reactions - the music remains in its romantic mode, elegiac and painfully suspenseful, rather than supporting the violence and other terrifying aspects of the scene.

As a special bonus, the soundtrack also includes the premiere recording of "Concert Suite from Anne and Alet", recorded live in the summer of 2013 at the Norwegian town of Risør which is famous for its international chamber music festival held every summer.

The series features an immensely beautiful, lush and romantic orchestral score by Spanish composer César Benito, whose music for the feature Ways to Live Forever was released by MovieScore Media in 2011. Our soundtrack album, which will be available both in digital format and on CD, presents 70 minutes of music carefully selected by the composer and reflecting the dramatic Spanish Civil War narrative which has engaged millions of viewers. Solo piano compositions which are somewhat minimalist in nature forms the thematic backbone of the score in conjunction with Benito’s elegant orchestrations. Yet another example of the amazingly high standards of Spanish film music!

"BIG BAD WOLVES"
Music by FRANK ILFMAN

Frank Ilfman, whose other credits include Nemesis Game, The Ferryman and Mercenaries, has written one of this year's most elegant scores in the darker school of orchestral film music with his music for the acclaimed Big Bad Wolves. The film recently received an impressive 11 Israeli Academy Award nominations and has been very well received during festival screenings. Combining thriller elements with mordant humor, Big Bad Wolves was described by The Hollywood Reporter as "fiendishly clever" featuring "mind-bending plot twists". Ilfman's music is centered on an interesting main theme which effectively contrasts minor and major chords, creating a noir-ish mood, and also features major action set-pieces.

What worries me about a film like this, isn't the score... the score somehow escapes they preying eyes of the critics. This film was not screened for review and that is the first "red flag", but again talking about the score... I enjoyed this as I do any of Ilan Eshkeri previous works.

THE BIG GUNDOWN is finally here!!!

There are THE STAR TREK nerds.  There are THE STAR WARS nerds.  I am a Spaghetti Western nerd.  I have a bunch of them.  I have books written about them including an encyclopedia which I have read cover to cover to learn about as many as I can.  What I learned from my extensive research is that there are not too many good ones.  Let me tell ya something, folks.  THE BIG GUNDOWN is one of the good ones.  It is a must buy!

First off I just want to thank Grindhouse Releasing for putting out a comprehensive package for the THE BIG GUNDOWN.  You get the American version.  You get the European longer cut plus the soundtrack.  There is also a DVD of the movie in case you don't have Blu and a booklet explaining the film's past.  The transfer is near perfect.  I seem to recall some blurry shots here and there but not too many and barely noticeable.  Maybe I am just losing my eyesight.  CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING....

THE HOBBIT EPISODE II: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

I am not one of those guys who reads books and, you know, learns new stuff.  I never claim that the book is better even though we all know nine times out of ten it is.  What I am trying to say is I don't judge a movie based on the book.  Just because the book is better doesn't mean the movie is bad just because it did something different with the source material.  I say that because I love the LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY.  I loved the first THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.  I find little to fault.  If there is anything to fault it can be easily ignored with no sense of compromise on how I view films.  I can't say that for the over bloated, overly long for no reason other than to create another trilogy THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG.

I complained when they took the books THE HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS, THE TWILIGHT BOOK 4 and now MOCKING JAY and split them into two movies.  Obviously it was to squeeze every dime out of a popular franchise that was coming to an end.  The result was a not so great HARRY POTTER movie and an even worse than usual THE TWILIGHT.  Who knows right now if THE HUNGER GAMES will add a not so great movie in their series which has been very solid so far.  I did not complain when they announced that THE HOBBIT was going to be divided into three films.  The reason for my hypocrisy is that I trusted Peter Jackson and I like the idea of movies that would no doubtfully explore and expand the world of Middle Earth.  How cool, right?  After the first HOBBIT film I was assured of another great trilogy in league with LOTR.  AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY took its time.  It set a mood.  It had remarkable scenes that I can remember and most importantly of all it blended well into the original trilogy.  DESOLATION, however, would better fit in the STAR WARS prequels with it's heavy dependence on computer graphics and zany cartoony adventure scenes.  CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING.....

Intrada: Blown Away [Score] - Alan Silvestri

    BLOWN AWAY
Music Composed and Conducted by ALAN SILVESTRI
    INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 264

For the 1994 MGM film Blown Away, composer Alan Silvestri provided a dynamic, dramatic and ultimately explosive score. Silvestri’s powerful music wound up almost entirely unheard outside of the finished film—and even within the film, it was significantly edited and frequently pushed up against attention-grabbing songs from the likes of U2 and October Project. With this new release, listeners can at last experience Silvestri’s score for Blown Away in its full and unadulterated form—a thrilling marriage of action and passion, and a virtuoso example of how music for bombs can be far more than simple bombast.

To create this CD, Intrada was given access to the composer’s own complete two-track digital scoring session masters. The results sound crisp and vibrant on this premiere release.

Blown Away centers around Jimmy Dove (Jeff Bridges), a senior member of Boston’s bomb squad who has a reckless propensity for putting himself in harm’s way. Dove is motivated by a past tragedy, and only two people know his dangerous secret: his elderly Irish uncle, Max O’Bannon (Lloyd Bridges); and Ryan Gaerity (Tommy Lee Jones), an incarcerated terrorist and explosives genius who was deemed “too crazy” for the IRA. When Gaerity escapes on the eve of Dove’s retirement and begins a campaign of terror and revenge, it’s up to Dove, with the help of his cocky new partner Anthony (Forest Whitaker), to stop him before everything and everyone he loves is literally blown away.

The RED DAWN remake is a RED YAWN!

I know the original RED DAWN was not the most realistic war movie ever made.  In many ways it was a naive fantasy war movie.  It was a movie that capitalized on the biggest fear of the 1980's which was the expansion of Communism through military might.  I remember watching RED DAWN on TNT with host Joe Bob Briggs.  He had a military expert explain how if something like RED DAWN did happened it would not happen the way the movie portrays.  The military would not be using the weapons that are being used in the movie and so forth.  Needless to say he tore the movie apart with it's depiction of war.  But that didn't mean the first RED DAWN was a bad movie.  Quite the contrary.  1980's RED DAWN was a violent, dramatic film that left an impression on those that watched it.  It was a shocking film for its time.  I remember a news report claiming that it was the most violent movie of all time.  High school kids forming a gorilla resistance group against the Commies and learning first hand the horrors of war was a good story.  I remember RED DAWN being a great movie.  It has been awhile so I may eat those words the next time I see it.  The point is that even though it has been awhile since I have seen the original I remember moments and characters from the film.  Old RED DAWN was a memorable film with an anti war message with one of the leading invading commanders questioning why they started the war in the first place.  On the other hand the remake is a blah, frantic mess of film making.  It is totally forgettable. Intrada: Breakfast at Tiffany’s - Henry Mancini

    BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S
Music Composed and Conducted by HENRY MANCINI
    INTRADA MAF 7129

For the 1961 Paramount Pictures' film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Henry Mancini wrote the melody of a lifetime and the score to go with it. Along with lyricist Johnny Mercer, he penned the song “Moon River” and enjoyed seeing it win the 1961 Academy Award for Best Song—and rapidly become one of the most recorded hits of all time. His Academy Award-winning score became equally famous. As was the norm in those days, Mancini selected approximately half an hour of melodies from the film score and re-arranged them for an RCA album aimed at the easy listening market. While the arrangements made for tuneful listening, the more serious orchestral sequences went unrepresented. Incredibly, while the “Moon River” theme, with its signature harmonica solo representing the lonely melancholy of principal character Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) was the most famous melody in the picture, Mancini chose to leave it off the re-recorded album save for the main title and a cha-cha version. That meant the entire final (and justifiably celebrated) sequence of the picture—the search for “cat,” that unforgettable embrace of the two lovers, the beautifully shot closing image of both cat and lovers re-united in the rain—and the dramatic treatment of “Moon River” with its trademark discordant notes of suspense leading to one of the most stirring orchestral crescendos and codas in all film music, went completely unrecorded for the record-buying public. Also gone were all of the lonesome variations of the melody, as well as the dramatic scoring for “Doc” Golightly (Buddy Ebsen), the magnificent parting sequence at the bus station, and many other cues.

    Until now.

For the first time, fans of this moving and magnificent film score can hear the soundtrack versions Mancini composed and conducted for the film—every dramatic cue, all of the sentimental variations, every big band tune and all the other pieces that make up this special soundtrack CD. Working from a number of master materials, including the 35mm three-channel stereo tracks, mono film soundtrack stems, DAT transfers made by Paramount Pictures and a handful of alternate and demo recordings, the entire score was remixed into a rich and rewarding stereo experience (with the exception of three score cues and the variety of extras that appear on this CD). It’s everything film music fans could want and it's everything Henry Mancini wrote for this most cherished of never-before-released soundtracks.
