Set in a quaint Middle American small town in the early 1900s, the 1955 Walt Disney film Lady and the Tramp centers on the charming romance between a pampered pooch and a bone-a-fide mutt. Told from a dog’s-eye point of view, Disney’s classic canine caper features unforgettable songs and a memorable score that is the musical tail wagging his beloved dog story.   Following Cinderella, this time around Disney wanted songs that would convey emotions and personality, as well as to help the Disney artists tell their cinematic story.  Disney turned to a fresh and invigorating source of songs: movie, radio, television and recording great, Peggy Lee, the sensuous songster who was a top-of-the-charts star.  Along with the talents of song writer Sonny Burke, the film featured a plethora of effervescent vocals.  Combined with the cracking score by composer Oliver Wallace, a nostalgic classic was born.

In 1997, the actual soundtrack elements were released on an album for the first time. The original Disneyland Records LP release were studio recordings and not the recordings from the original soundtrack (except for “Home Sweet Home”) that ultimately premiered in 1997.  Walt Disney Records has included those versions as bonus tracks on disc two following The Lost Chords for their premiere CD release.  Although the movie is a CinemaScope film and in stereo (at least the dialog and sound effects are), the music elements have always been in mono.  For this release, Disney music expert and restoration genius Randy Thornton has turned out the cleanest and brightest soundtrack version of this heartwarming classic.  Combined with the deluxe packaging of the Legacy collection featuring gorgeous new custom artwork, this new release is the ultimate edition and not to be missed.

Intrada: THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS [2Cd] - JERRY GOLDSMITH

The 1996 Paramount film The Ghost and the Darkness offered composer Jerry Goldsmith a rare opportunity to write a leitmotif-based score with a variety of themes, motifs and effects. His main theme is a proud, martial anthem that manages to convey Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson's love for Africa and his dedication to the task of building a bridge. Goldsmith further characterized Patterson's Irish origins with a rhythmic figure inspired by the traditional “Irish Washerwoman” jig.  He also composed a hopeful theme for Patterson’s relationship with his wife and his yearning to see his newborn son.  Goldsmith’s music for the predators blends African tribal percussion and vocals into the lion attack scenes, making them part of the landscape and culture of the continent.  This just highlights a few of the themes and architecture of Goldsmith's complex score.

With this release, Intrada presents a 2-CD set featuring the complete score and alternates. Goldsmith’s complete music from The Ghost and the Darkness, as mixed for the finished picture, plays first on CD 1. It is followed by part 1 of the extras, beginning with alternate and unused mixes. Those continue on CD 2. Because most of the original album mixes are considerably different from their respective film versions and the alternates, and because “Lions Attack” has material composed just for the album, included is the original album program, including the five performances by The Worldbeaters under the supervision of George Acogny.

The film is based on a true story. In 1898, native workers on a British railroad project in the Tsavo region of Kenya came under attack from an almost supernatural force. Two man-eating lions terrorized the crew for the better part of a year. Patterson, the Scottish engineer in charge of building a bridge over the Tsavo River, engaged militia and professional hunters in numerous strategies to kill the beasts. Patterson himself finally brought down both of the predators in December 1898, putting several bullets in the last surviving lion as it confronted him in a tree. The lions’ bodies were later stuffed and mounted; they can be seen today at Chicago’s Field Museum.

Intrada: CONEHEADS/TALENT FOR THE GAME/THE ITSY-BITSY SPIDER - DAVID NEWMAN

David Newman was firmly established as one of Hollywood’s preeminent composers by the early 1990s, and this album offers a trio of previously unreleased Newman scores: his delightfully retro contribution to the 1993 Paramount comedy Coneheads, a dramatic score from the 1991 baseball drama Talent for the Game, and a wacky underscore for the animated short T he Itsy Bitsy Spider (1992).  Each offers a taste of Newman’s redoubtable talent  for composing a perfect score to whatever project came his way.

The Coneheads features a pair of invasion-hungry extraterrestrials who speak in a monotone voice and are instantly recognizable from their large, cone-shaped craniums. En route to taking over the galaxy, the Coneheads crash in New Jersey and are forced to assimilate to life on Earth.  They balance an endless quest for intergalactic domination with raising a daughter a bit more accustomed to terrestrial existence than her parents. Highlighted by a playful homage to Bernard Herrmann’s The Day the Earth Stood Still written in Newman’s signature style, Newman grounds his score with the familiar tritone and ostinato from the Herrmann classic, incorporating electronics and eerie sounds that evoke the musical colors of 1950s science fiction. Newman’s intermittently ethereal music acts as a perfect counterpoint to the film’s slapstick gags.

Director Robert Young’s Talent for the Game (1991) stars Edward James Olmos as Virgil Sweet, a baseball scout for the California Angels. A former player whose own career is cut short before the big leagues, Virgil’s time cultivating prospects for the Major League Baseball franchise has also run out. The Angels’ new owner wants to clean house, but Virgil talks his way into one last chance—provided he can find a legitimate talent. David Newman’s lyrical score is certainly one of the film’s strongest assets, recalling the melodic grandeur of scores like The Natural, Field of Dreams and even Hoosiers, while also underscoring the rural nature of small-town life and the rise from anonymity to a heavily hyped big-league prospect. Introspective, poignant underscoring is the main ingredient of Newman’s work.

Concluding the album is Newman’s delightfully frantic score for The Itsy Bitsy Spider, a comedic, revisionist take on the nursery rhyme. The seven-minute animated short, which played in front of Paramount’s 1992 feature Bebe’s Kids, gave David Newman the opportunity to craft a madcap score in the vein of Carl Stalling’s Looney Tunes shorts.

All told, these premiere presentations of three David Newman scores showcase his compositional diversity and make for a colorful, varied listen.

A couple of truckers are transporting canisters of bio-hazard substance belonging to the MAMARONECK Medical Research Facility when they hit a deer on the road. The impact of the collision causes one of the canisters to fall into the river, where it floats downstream and reaches a beaver dam. At the dam, the canister starts leaking a green-colored gas.

It's a disturbing yet well done piece of one wrong path, quickly leads to another. Strong performances by the cast, this a place in an actors career that might be difficult return from.

Chuck Norris is WALKER TEXAS RANGER!

Chuck Norris is back in action with another installment of the exciting crime drama when Walker, Texas Ranger: Flashback arrives on DVD, exclusively at Walmart. In the two-part episode, Walker pursues a group of killers seeking the lost treasures of Hayes Cooper, a legendary Wild West Texas Ranger. In the midst of Walker’s chase, the side effects of a rattlesnake bite leads to flashbacks of Cooper. To bring the killers to justice, Walker must bring himself out of the haze and back to the present before it’s too late. 

Walker, Texas Ranger is an American television series created by Leslie Greif and Paul Haggis. It was inspired by the film Lone Wolf McQuade, with both this series and that film starring Chuck Norris as a member of the Texas Ranger Division.

Lakeshore Records: CHILD 44 [2015] - Jon Ekstrand

Lakeshore Records will release the CHILD 44 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 14th and on CD May 12, 2015. The album features the film’s original score by Jon Ekstrand (EASY MONEY).

“The movie takes place in the 50’s Russia and the plot is about an idealistic pro-Stalin security officer who decides to investigate a series of child murders in a country where this sort of crime doesn't exist,” Ekstrand explained. “He gets demoted and exiled but decides, with just the help of his wife, to continue pursuing the murderer. So we decided not to go with any electronic elements and only work with acoustic instruments and sparingly with effects. We also wanted solo Viola and balalaika tremolo beds to be a part of the score so that the overarching tone would be very dark and ominous.” 

CHILD 44 is a politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia, CHILD 44 chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Gary Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up enforced by Leo’s psychopathic rival Vasili [Joel Kinnaman], who insists “There is no crime in Paradise.”

Summit Entertainment presents CHILD 44 in theaters April 17, 2015.  Lakeshore Records will release the CHILD 44 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 14th and on CD May 12, 2015.

Lakeshore Records: The AGE OF ADALINE [2015] - Rob Simonsen

Lakeshore Records will release the AGE OF ADALINE – Original Motion Picture Score digitally on April 21st and on CD May 12, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by Rob Simonsen (FOXCATCHER, The Spectacular Now) and the song “Start Again” with Simonsen and Faux Fix, featuring Elena Tonra. The AGE OF ADALINE, a romantic drama, stars Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, with Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn and will be released nationwide by Lionsgate on April 24, 2015.  The film is directed by Lee Toland Krieger from a screenplay by J. Mills Goodloe & Salvador Paskowitz and J Mills Goodloe; story by J. Mills Goodloe & Salvador Paskowitz. Producers are Sidney Kimmel, Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi.

MovieScore Media unleashes the soundtrack for Lionsgate’s latest Medieval epic: released on April 3, Last Knights, starring Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman, spans a sweeping adventure score by Martin Tillman and Satnam Ramgotra, two musicians whose work is featured in dozens of Hans Zimmer’s most epic scores (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel). Helmed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya, this classic tale of honor, loyalty and vengeance follows a group of fallen warriors who rise against a corrupt and sadistic ruler in order to avenge their dishonored master. The score is provided by two musicians who forged their compositional skills through collaborations with Hans Zimmer and also recruited Belgian singer Natacha Atlas to lend her haunting vocals to the music.

World-renowned cellist Martin Tillman began his collaborations with Zimmer on The Fan and has since played on several of his scores, including The Pirates of the Caribbean films or The Ring franchise. As a composer, he contributed to Michael Mann’s Ali and is co-credited composer on The Ring Two. Satnam Ramgotra is the extraordinary percussionist performing on dozens of scores ranging from Christopher Nolan’s Inception to family friendly entertainment like Despicable Me. Tillman and Ramgotra had previously played together on scores like The Dark Knight trilogy, Angels & Demons or Rush - now they team up as composers for this adventure. 

The soundtrack offers an exciting program of Zimmer-inspired action music akin to his King Arthur score. Considering the two composers own careers as musicians, the music features excellent cello and percussion parts for the Medieval sieges and battles, but there’s more to the score than great power anthems. The story’s focus on vengeance and loyalty offers a great contrast between the dark cues of deception and the heroic, noble anthems of pledged alliance, empowered by the powerful vocal performance of Natacha Atlas. Featuring an hour’s worth of excellent action, adventure and suspense music, Last Knights will be a delight to fans of The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons and other Zimmer scores where Tillman and Ramgotra show their talents as featured soloists.

Just Announced and I have listen to this three times in row, is it worth a listen... yes, yes it is!

Luke Collins is a bullrider who is seriously injured one night while riding. One year later he gets back on and meets Sophia Danko by chance. On their first date they encounter an older gentleman who has crashed his car and help rescue him. Luke continues riding bulls, no matter the risk of being hurt again. He and Sophia fall in love. Meanwhile, Sophia continuously visits the man she and Luke rescued, Ira Levinson. He tells her the story of how he met his late wife, Ruth. Their stories interweaving together.

The cinematic adaptation to Nicholas Sparks‘ romantic and heartfelt novel features an exciting soundtrack curated by music supervisor Season Kent (The Faults In Our Stars) and full of awesome rock and country tunes. Listeners will find music by the likes of Ryan Adams, Nikki Lane, Ben & Ellen Harper and many more. They will have a chance to discover the upcoming UK band Seafret with their song Wildfire. 

A companion album featuring the whole score by acclaimed composer Mark Isham will be released on CD and digital on April 4 as well.  

Bull-riding, love story and drama... sign me up! I did actually see this film, if you can get past how much the son is like the father or at the very least looks like him. It was not a bad film, the bull-riding scenes were pretty cool. I was taking back by the lovely "Oona Chaplin", who for me was very touching in this and a special nod for the always talented Alan Alda.
