Rising Voices: "PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE"

Rising Voices, a collective of over 30 musicians, announces the release of their cover and music video of People Are People in support of the NAACP Empowerment Program, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and HeadCount.org. All proceeds will be donated to these organizations. Inspired to rise up to help the Black Lives Matter and justice movement, this charity single is a cover of Depeche Mode’s People Are People – a song that spun in the head of producer and musician Chris Wirsig who started this initiative.

“The song struck me during the first protests after the horrible murder of George Floyd, and I still had it in my ear with all the reports of excessive police force and racism around the country, especially with the lyric “I don’t understand what makes a man hate another man,” Wirsig comments. “I felt it’s time to do something, to help our society to overcome injustice and inequality – within the universal language of music. The benefiting organizations of this project are actively working towards a much needed change in our society, educating about social equality, and reporting incidents of racism and injustice. So I gathered many friends who all contributed their skills, due to Covid-19 recording their parts in their respective home studios without even knowing what the others will exactly play or sing, to raise money and awareness for this important cause.”

Milan Records: "THE WILDS" (MUSIC FROM THE AMAZON ORIGINAL SERIES) music by Cliff Martinez

Milan Records today announces the December 11 release of THE WILDS (MUSIC FROM THE AMAZON ORIGINAL SERIES) and shares the lead single from EMPRESS OF – listen to “Broken” here.  Originally making its debut this week as the featured track in the show’s official trailer, “Broken” is a dark and dance-y track written by Empress Of exclusively for the series, which follows a group of teen girls as they fight for survival on a deserted island.  It’s featured on the soundtrack alongside 20 new score tracks written by acclaimed composer CLIFF MARTINEZ – pre-order now.  From creator and executive producer Sarah Streicher (Daredevil) and produced by ABC Signature, The Wilds is an original young adult thrilling drama series coming to Amazon Prime Video on Friday, December 11.

Of the soundtrack, composer CLIFF MARTINEZ says, “The Wilds is a story about the odyssey of adolescence for ten young women. Not a subject I have a lot of familiarity with and it clearly perched me on the edge of my musical comfort zone. Nonetheless, I put on my teenage girl hat and embraced the challenge. For this score, I put aside my usual preoccupation with sparse instrumentation and stark undulating textures in favor of more traditional musical food groups such as…uh...harmony and melody! The resulting score to The Wilds is probably one of my most uniquely ‘musical’ efforts."

Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teen girls from different backgrounds who must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they've all endured. There’s just one twist to this thrilling drama… these girls did not end up on this island by accident.

The series stars industry veteran Rachel Griffiths, as well as a mix of familiar and fresh faces that include Sophia Ali, Shannon Berry, Jenna Clause, Reign Edwards, Mia Healey,  Helena Howard, Erana James, Sarah Pidgeon, David Sullivan, and Troy Winbush.  The Wilds is co-produced by Amazon Studios and ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios. Sarah Streicher (Daredevil) created the series and also serves as executive producer alongside Amy B. Harris (Sex and the City and The Carrie Diaries), Jamie Tarses (Happy Endings), and Dylan Clark (The Batman and Bird Box).

Under the name Empress Of, Honduran-American songwriter, musician and producer Lorely Rodriguez creates introspective, self-empowering pop music centered around her impressive, acrobatic vocals. On her 2015 debut album, Me, she established a danceable, spontaneous sound that embraced whimsicality and percussiveness. With her 2018 sophomore album, Us, Rodriguez wanted to facilitate a more equal exchange of energy between herself and her listeners, to create a community.
Her third album - I'm Your Empress Of comes on the heels of touring with Lizzo, Blood Orange, Maggie Rogers and Mura Masa and follows her collaborations with Khalid, MØ, DJDS and her song "Wild Girl" with KITO. Lorely shares, "After writing three albums, no process has been the same. This record wasn't written in a remote location. It wasn't written in a collaborative effort. It was written in my small studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles over two months in between touring the world. Music is magic. Something that possesses me, shows me things about myself that aren't easy to see. It's called I'm Your Empress Of because I've always felt that once a song is done, and the emotion is there and it's not inside me anymore, it belongs to the world."

Cliff Martinez, who was born in the Bronx but raised in Ohio, moved to California in 1976, landing in the middle of the punk movement. After stints as the drummer for the Weirdos, Lydia Lunch and Foetus frontman Jim Thirlwell, and the final incarnation of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, Martinez joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers (playing on the band’s first two albums) and later the Dickies. It was during his tenure with the Chili Peppers that Cliff began exploring the new technologies of that era, which would eventually guide him towards the film music world.

A tape Martinez had put together using these new technologies made its rounds, leading him to score an episode of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. The same recording also ended up in Steven Soderbergh’s hands and Martinez was hired to score the famed director’s first theatrical release 1989’s sex, lies, and videotape. Martinez’s longstanding relationship with Soderbergh has continued through the years and they have worked together on ten theatrical releases including Kafka, The Limey, Traffic, Solaris, Contagion and the critically acclaimed TV series The Knick.

Perhaps it is because of his time in the punk scene that Martinez’s approach to scoring is nontraditional. His scores tend towards being stark and sparse, utilizing a modern tonal palette to paint the backdrop for films that are often dark, psychological stories like Pump Up the Volume (1990), The Limey (2009) Wonderland (2003), Wicker Park (2004), and Drive (2011). Martinez has been nominated for a Grammy Award (Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic), a Cesar Award (Xavier Giannoli’s A L’origine), and a Broadcast Film Critics Award (Drive). His score for The Neon Demon was awarded Best Soundtrack at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival.

Still the drummer at heart, Martinez’s use of audio manipulations, particularly for percussive sounds, has been evolving through the years and is evident by the hammered dulcimer of Kafka (1991), the gray-areas between sound design and score for Traffic (2000), the steel drums and textures of Solaris (2002), what Martinez called ‘rhythmi-tizing pitched, ambient textures’ of Narc (2002), and ‘using percussion performances to trigger and shape the rhythmic and tonal characteristics of those ambient textures,’ as he described his score for 2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer.

Cliff Martinez was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012 with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He earned the prestigious Richard Kirk Lifetime Achievement award from BMI in 2013.  Martinez served as a juror for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and served on the International Feature nominating committee for 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Martinez’s recent films include Drew Pearce’s Hotel Artemis, Christian Gudegast’s Den of Thieves, Martin Campbell’s The Foreigner, Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon, Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep, and Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers (co-composed with Skrillex). His second film with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, Only God Forgives, earned Martinez a 2014 Robert Award (Danish Academy Award). Next up will be the limited series Too Old to Die Young (directed by Nicolas Winding Refn).

Sony Masterworks: "THE CROWN: SEASON FOUR" music by Martin Phipps

Sony Music today announces the November 20 release of THE CROWN: SEASON 4 (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES) with music by BAFTA and Ivor Novello Award-winning composer MARTIN PHIPPS (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders). Available for preorder now, the album features music written by Phipps for the fourth season of the critically-acclaimed Netflix Original Series. Making its debut alongside the highly-anticipated Season 4 premiere last night was the lead single to the soundtrack – listen to “Fairytale” here.

Of the soundtrack, composer MARTIN PHIPPS says, "In Season 4, the world of our middle aged characters is blown apart by the arrival of Princess Diana. I wanted to represent this bombshell in the music, culminating in Episode 5 when Australia goes nuts for Diana and the score switches to a brash, technicolor electronic palette. We are also in the ‘80s throughout the season, so the score is sprinkled with retro synth elements. Peter Morgan (showrunner/general maestro) was clear that he also wanted a strong sense of musical continuity with Season 3, so I updated many of our familiar, more orchestral themes from previous episodes. One of my favorite scenes is the reuse of the Simple Harp theme, as Diana returns triumphant from shooting a stag during her ‘Balmoral tests.’ I hope you enjoy the new series, and its score, as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

Phipps reprises his role as the show’s composer following a successful third season in 2019, for which he notably garnered his sixth career Emmy® Award nomination in the category of “Music Composition for a Series.” Available everywhere now, his Season 3 Soundtrack received widespread critical acclaim, with The Los Angeles Times noting, “He accompanied Queen Elizabeth’s middle-age years, and the national tragedies and personal tribulations she encountered, with pulsing electronics, men’s choir and opulent orchestration that was simultaneously grave and groovy.” Phipps has continued to expand his influence and sound with each subsequent score.

As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown‘s fourth season also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother, Georgie Glen as Lady Fermoy, Tom Byrne as Prince Andrew, Angue Imrie as Prince Edward, and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten.

Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britten’s godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University. Fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street, in 2002, he has won 2 BAFTAs and 5 Ivor Novello Awards, and gone on to write music for many of the most interesting series of recent years, including the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick’s Black Earth Rising, Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. Martin most recently scored season 4 of the Left Bank Pictures/Netflix series, The Crown.

Having recently moved into film, Martin’s credits include the Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds movie Woman In Gold (scored with Hans Zimmer), Fox Searchlight’s The Aftermath, starring Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgård, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock.

Martin recently set up Mearl, a project to facilitate collaborating with other artists and composers, as well as a platform for developing his own material. Peaky Blinders was the first soundtrack written under this name, scored with a band of musicians from Radiohead’s new Laundry Studios in London Fields. Two recent feature films were also written under this title.

Sony Music Masterworks comprises Masterworks, Sony Classical, Milan Records, OKeh, Portrait and Masterworks Broadway imprints. For email updates and information please visit https://lnk.to/sonysoundtracks.

Intrada: "SPECIES II" (EXPANDED) music by Edward Shearmur

Intrada's latest release from the MGM catalog features Edward Shearmur's 1998 score to Species II, the sequel to the successful 1995 film Species. Species II represented a leap for Shearmur, as his career began just a few years earlier. This genre sequel brought him his largest project to date. Director Peter Medak and Sheamur agreed not to follow the musical language set by composer Christopher Young in the first film and take a more traditional approach. Featuring large orchestra and layers of electronics, Shearmur delivered a rousingly scary and sensual score. In what seems a rare occurrence these days, the well-spotted film features the finished score as originally intended by the composer with little to no deviation. For the composer, the score was a step towards even bigger projects, including the stunning music for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and The Count of Monte Cristo. And for the rest of the world, a new sci-fi horror score arrived to thrill.

The original release on TVT Records featured less than half of Shearmur's score, clocking in at 30 minutes, whereas this release features over 70 minutes. Robert Fernandez created a crisp and vibrant mix of the original sessions, now featured in its entirety on this new Intrada album.

In the film, astronaut Patrick Ross (Justin Lazard) returns from Mars a hero, but also infected with alien DNA. Back on Earth, he works his irresistible glamor into a host of instantly newborn sons, all waiting to metamorphosize into world-destroying aliens. Earth’s only salvation is Sil, now reborn as “Eve,” once again played by Natasha Henstridge, but now in a more sympathetic, if no less dangerously reprised, form to help save the world.

INTRADA ISC 460
Starts Shipping November 17th
Note: Due to local restrictions related to the pandemic, shipping time may be slower than usual

T-65b Records: "THE PATHLESS" music by Austin Wintory

T-65b Records releases The Pathless Original Video Game Soundtrack by BAFTA Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory (ABZÛ, Journey), available today for purchase and streaming. The Pathless, a mythic adventure game developed by Giant Squid and published by Annapurna Interactive, is now available digitally as a PlayStation 5 launch title, as well as PlayStation 4 and PC via the Epic Games Store for $39.99. The game is also available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV via Apple Arcade, Apple’s $4.99/month game subscription service that includes a one-month free trial. Fans can also look forward to its European PlayStation 5 release on November 19.

The album was recorded around the world with over 100 musicians fusing Wintory’s breathtaking orchestral arrangements with musical traditions, instruments, and vocalizations from a variety of countries — a “global jam band” (as Wintory puts it) including Tuva, Scandinavia, China, Eastern Europe, Mongolia, Appalachia, Western Africa, and hints of the Middle East. Each track embraces this unplaceable sound, seeming to come from some timeless, non-existent mythical people - a worldwide combination of cultures and soundscapes harmonizing as one to immerse players in the adventurous realms of The Pathless.

Speaking on writing the score for The Pathless, Wintory remarked, "It speaks to Matt [Nava]'s vision and especially the fact that, for all of the game’s grandeur and epic set pieces, the music is surprisingly intimate much of the time.”

Wintory went on to express his gratitude to everyone who recorded for the soundtrack, “As always with my writing, the performers are the heart and soul, but that's especially true in this case. Collaborating with the fabulous Tuvan trio of the Alash Ensemble yielded the backbone over which all the rest of the score is mounted. Between their effortless musicianship and the talents of the small army that followed them (104 musicians in total!), it might be fair to say that this is the most personally expressive score I've ever written."

Developed by the award-winning team behind ABZÛ, The Pathless sees players take on the role of the Hunter, a master of archery who travels to a mystical island to dispel a curse of darkness that grips the world. MILAN RECORDS CONTINUES ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH COLIN STETSON RELEASING NEW TITLES FROM THE ACCLAIMED SAXOPHONIST, SONGWRITER & COMPOSER’S CATALOGUE OF FILM AND TELEVISION SCORE TITLES

Milan Records today announces the latest in an ongoing partnership with GRAMMY® Award-winning saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer COLIN STETSON, releasing three new titles from the acclaimed artist’s catalogue of film and television scores.  Available for the first time today are COLOR OUT OF SPACE (MORE MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE), THE WAR SHOW (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) and DELIVER US (ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK).  The new titles follow Milan Records’ previous releases for Stetson’s scores for 2018 horror film Hereditary, this year’s Nicolas Cage-starrer Color Out of Space and the National Geographic series Barkskins.

COLOR OUT OF SPACE (MORE MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE) follows the January release of Color Out Of Space (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) and features never-before-released score music written by Stetson for the sci-fi thriller based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft and starring Nicolas Cage.  Color Out Of Space tells the story of Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family, who after a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farmstead, find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.

THE WAR SHOW (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) is an album of music written by Stetson for the 2016 documentary film, which was selected as an Official Selection of the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.  The War Show follows Syrian radio host Obaidah Zytoon and captures the fate of Syria through the intimate lens of a small circle of friends and journalists. Beginning with peaceful Arab Spring protests in 2011, The War Show offers a four-year, ground-level look at how the country spiraled into bloody civil war.

DELIVER US (ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK) is an album of music written by Stetson for the Danish series, an edgy psychological drama created by Christian Torpe and Marie Østerbye.  Deliver Us follows five people in a small Danish town who join forces and plan the perfect murder of the local town psycho who is terrorizing the community, only to realize that once you start playing God, it’s easy to end up as the Devil.

ABOUT COLIN STETSON... Colin Stetson, born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player before eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively with a wide range of bands and musicians, including Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and The National.

Stetson has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophone and clarinet. His astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. He is at home in the avant-jazz tradition of pushing the boundaries through circular breathing and embouchure, and his noise/drone/minimalist sound encompasses genres like dark metal, post-rock and contemporary electronics.

More recently, Stetson has focused on scoring a number of original soundtracks, including Lavender (2016), which he co-scored with Sarah Neufeld, A24 production Hereditary (2018) and Hulu series The First (2018). He also contributed to the score for award-winning game Red Dead Redemption II (2018) and is set to score the new Adult Swim anime miniseries Uzumaki, an adaptation of Junji Ito’s renowned horror manga, which arrives in 2020.

Walt Disney Records: "THE CLOUDS" music by Brian Tyler

The "Clouds" Original Score Soundtrack, featuring music composed by Brian Tyler, is available today at digital retail providers.  Directed by Justin Baldoni ("Five Feet Apart"), "Clouds" is streaming now on Disney+.

The score was produced by Tyler and Nathan Alexander.  In addition to contributing vocals on select tracks, Tyler also plays guitar, bass, drums, percussion and piano on all 20 tracks.

"Brian is one of the most kind, talented and intuitive composers in the world and working with him on 'Clouds' has been a dream. Despite all the obstacles the pandemic and lockdown presented, Brian overcame and found a way to create one of the most beautiful, raw and ethereal scores I have ever heard. I will forever be in debt to the delicacy and care to which he handled our film and Zach's musical legacy," said "Clouds" director Justin Baldoni.

Reflecting on his work on the film Tyler said, "Composing the score for 'Clouds' was truly one of the most incredible and personal experiences of my life. It meant so much to me to honor the life of Zach Sobiech, an amazing human being and blossoming songwriter that was taken from us too soon after succumbing to cancer at age 17. I wanted to channel the spirit of Zach in the music that would accompany the film telling the story of Zach's life and that was no small task. I reached for inspiration from his own original music while wanting to compose a score that perhaps he would have written if he lived on and perhaps became a film composer. I found myself composing for echoing bells, cascading pianos, canopies of analog synth pads, and atmospheric guitars. One of the most important aspects of the music was my most human instrument: my own voice, which I utilized as a main textural component reverberating through the entire score. I can't say enough about our brilliant director Justin Baldoni who told Zach's story with such heart. At the end of the process, I realized I had written my most emotionally personal score. Working on this film was an experience that will be with me forever."

Inspired by an incredible true story, "Clouds" is a vibrant ode to the life of singer/songwriter Zach Sobiech (Fin Argus). Zach is a seventeen-year-old, fun-loving student with raw musical talent living with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. At the start of his senior year, he is ready to take on the world, however when he receives the news that the disease has spread, he and his best friend and songwriting partner, Sammy (Sabrina Carpenter), decide to spend Zach's limited time following their dreams. With the help of Zach's mentor and teacher, Mr. Weaver (Lil Rel Howery), Zach and Sammy are given the chance of a lifetime and are offered a record deal. Along with the support of the love of his life, Amy (Madison Iseman) and his parents, Rob and Laura (Tom Everett Scott and Neve Campbell); Zach embarks on an unforgettable journey about friendship, love and the power of music.

"Clouds" is directed by Justin Baldoni and produced by Andrew Lazar, Justin Baldoni and Casey La Scala. Kara Holden wrote the screenplay with a story by Casey La Scala & Patrick Kopka and Kara Holden. The movie is produced by Wayfarer Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures and Mad Chance / La Scala Films.

Brian Tyler is a multiple BAFTA and Emmy Award nominee and has been a composer and conductor on over 70 feature films. Tyler's scoring credits include Joss Whedon's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," James Wan's "Furious 7," and F. Gary Gray's "Fate of the Furious" as well as others in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, Shane Black's "Iron Man 3," Alan Taylor's "Thor: The Dark World," Jon Chu's "Crazy Rich Asians" for which he was voted to the 2019 Oscar shortlist for Best Original Score, James Vanderbilt's "Truth" which stars Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, Justin Baldoni's "Five Feet Apart," Louis Leterrier's "Now You See Me," Jon Chu's "Now You See Me 2," Adam Shankman's "What Men Want," "Ready or Not" directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett,  "Charlie's Angels" directed by Elizabeth Banks and Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" for television.  Upcoming projects include Taylor Sheridan's "Those Who Wish Me Dead," "F9 (Fast & Furious 9)" directed by Justin Lin, "Redeeming Love" directed by DJ Caruso and "Escape Room 2" directed by Adam Robitel.  Alongside Brian's upcoming film projects, he has begun preparations towards unveiling his ambitious project Are We Dreaming, a completely immersive audiovisual experience.

Silva Screen Records: "ROADKILL" music by Harry Escott

Silva Screen Records will digitally release composer Harry Escott’s original score for the new BBC drama Roadkill. Starring Hugh Laurie, the four-part political thriller was written by David Hare (The Hours, The Reader) and directed by _Line of Duty’s Michael Keillor. The thriller follows a self-made, forceful, and charismatic politician whose public and private life is being picked apart by his enemies.

Over the last two decades, Harry Escott has worked with some of the industry’s finest filmmakers composing scores for Eran Creevy’s Shifty, Paddy Considine’s Journeyman, Steve McQueen’s Shame, David Slade’s Hard Candy and Alvaro Delgado’s Retablo. He is known for his long standing relationship with Michael Winterbottom, for whom he has scored several films including A Might Heart, The Face of An Angel and most recently, Greed and with Clio Barnard for whom he has scored all of her films including the forthcoming Ali & Ava.

Away from the screen, Escott’s recent works include a collaboration with the poet Lavinia Greenlaw for her sound installation, Audio Obscura, which won the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry and O Light Of Light, a reflection on Tallis’ O Nata Lux which was commissioned and performed by Ora Singers.

Harry Escott’s score for Roadkill is a jazzy, small ensemble affair featuring Mercury nominated pianist Kit Downes as leader of the band of world class performers - Martin France on drums, Richard Price on Double Bass, Oliver Pashley on Clarinet and Hugh Wilkinson on Vibraphone. Escott’s jaunty yet slippery themes and chromatic angular waltzes, seem to be purposefully disassociated from the on-screen drama. The music’s role in Roadkill is to heighten our understanding of the central character, the sociopathic politician Peter Laurence, skillfully played by Hugh Laurie.

Roadkill premiered on BBC One, UK on October 18th and is expected to premiere in the U.S. in early 2021 as part of the PBS’ Masterpiece series.

Roadkill is Harry Escott’s 4th release on Silva Screen Records, following Shifty (2009), The Face of An Angel (2015) and River (2015), for which he was awarded the Music and Sound Award for best original TV score in 2016. [Visit http://www.silvascreenusa.com]

Milan Records: "AMMONITE" music by Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann

Milan Records today announces the November 13 release of Ammonite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with music by Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann. Available for pre-order now, the album features music written by the duo for director Francis Lee’s critically-acclaimed film starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. Continuing a fruitful creative partnership, the nine-track album features music co-composed by O’Halloran and Bertelmann, who previously teamed on the Academy® Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe® Award-nominated score for 2016’s Lion, A Christmas Carol and more.  Making its debut alongside today’s preorder is the soundtrack’s lead single “Fossils,” a stirringly moving and romantic track – listen here.  Following its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), NEON will open the film in select theaters on Friday, November 13.

Of the soundtrack, composers O’Halloran and Bertelmann say, “Writing music for Ammonite was a smooth and natural process. We already knew from director Francis Lee’s previous work this would be a score full of emotion and restraint. Because the film is a period piece, it also meant finding a tone and instrumentation that would work in this world. The overall length of music recorded is somewhat shorter than our other scores; therefore, we used many natural sounds, so when the pieces arrive, it feels meaningful. We decided for a small chamber group of strings and piano as our palette and worked from there. Francis’s original idea was to find a single piece of music playing in parts and come to a full suite at the end. In some ways, this was how we approached it, save for a few moments of score specific to the scene. We found the strong acting that both Kate and Saoirse brought meant we needed to offer space, and try not to overstep. The last piece of music in the film, during the museum scene, represented a full understanding of the emotions that played out between the two characters.”

Ammonite tells the story of acclaimed self-taught paleontologist Mary Anning, who works alone on the wild and brutal Southern English coastline of Lyme Regis in the 1840s. The days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now hunts for common fossils to sell to rich tourists to support herself and her ailing widowed mother. When one such tourist, Roderick Murchison, arrives in Lyme on the first leg of a European tour, he entrusts Mary with the care of his young wife Charlotte, who is recuperating from a personal tragedy. Mary, whose life is a daily struggle on the poverty line, cannot afford to turn him down but, proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, she clashes with her unwanted guest. They are two women from utterly different worlds. Yet despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realization that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.

Dustin O’Halloran is an American pianist and composer with four acclaimed solo albums under his own name, and is a member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen with Adam Wiltzie. He released his first EP for renowned classical musical label Deutsche Grammophon in 2019, with a new album currently in the works, and A Winged Victory For The Sullen released their latest album, The Undivided Five, on Ninja Tune the same year.

O’Halloran’s film career began with Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006), and since then he’s worked on multiple films and TV shows, including Like Crazy (2011) and Breathe In (2013), directed by Drake Doremus and both starring Felicity Jones. He also scored Marc Turtletaub’s Puzzle (2018), for whose closing song he collaborated with veteran Scandinavian chart-topper Ane Brun, and George Tillman Jr.’s critically acclaimed The Hate U Give (2018).

He’s the winner of a 2015 Emmy Award for his main title theme to Amazon’s comedy drama Transparent (2014–2017), and was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a Critics Choice Award for his score to Lion (2016), written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka). He also collaborated with Bertelmann to score A Christmas Carol (2019) starring Guy Pearce, Ammonite (2020) starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, and The Old Guard (2020) starring Charlize Theron. Other collaborations include with Bryan Senti on the Sky TV series Save Me (2018–).

In addition, he worked as a producer for Katy Perry’s song ‘Into Me You See’ from her 2017 album, Witness, and appears on Leonard Cohen’s 2019 posthumous album, Thanks For The Dance.

Since then, Bertelmann has provided music for several leading films and television series. He composed the score for Patrick Melrose, Showtime’s Emmy-and BAFTA nominated mini-series, and for Gunpowder, the HBO mini-series starring Kit Harington. He also composed film scores for Adrift, the 2018 romantic drama directed by Baltasar Kormákur, and, again in collaboration with O’Halloran, for The Art of Racing in The Rain, which is based on the best-selling novel by Garth Stein. In 2018, he accepted an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bertelmann, who in his solo work goes by the name Hauschka, is a uniquely innovative pianist; he is renowned both for his trademark sound, which he achieves by preparing the piano with various small objects, and his ability to improvise entire performances. His output is prodigious: he tours extensively, and has produced over twenty albums and EPs, both solo and in collaboration with others. He has worked, among many others, with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he was the artist in residence, with Múm, the Icelandic experimental musical group, and with the Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn.

Sony Masterworks: "WINTER NIGHT: TRACES IN THE SNOW" music by

Internationally acclaimed cellist Tina Guo has known and worked with Leo Z for many years, but this is their first full collaboration, made remotely at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Guo says: “I thought, maybe this is actually the perfect opportunity to slow down and make some beautiful, mystical music.”

Despite being physically separated, the two artists enjoyed a smooth virtual collaboration, building up a selection of five songs in dark, evocative arrangements.

“Winter is such a vibe,” says Leo Z – “colors are changing, there’s more darkness during the day. We wanted to capture that type of moment that feels almost frozen in time.”

Tina Guo: “I feel like it does sound cohesive, like we’re in this universe together. I think it’s very metaphysical, very spiritual – we’re in this audio and energetic space together, musically. We just never saw each other in person.”

Tracks on the EP include “Scarborough Fair”, “Greensleeves”, and two ancient Christmas carols: “O come, O come Emmanuel” and the Coventry Carol. Tina Guo and Leo Z also perform their version of Arvo Pärt’s Silouan’s Song. In addition to the cello and piano being featured on the album, Guo plays the erhu, an ancient Chinese instrument, and the musicians are joined by Eric Rigler on traditional Celtic instruments including the Uilleann pipes.

The album is marked by the ongoing coronavirus crisis, bringing listeners together as winter approaches, just as it brought the two artists together in their separate home studios. Tina Guo comments: “Making music again felt a little bit more introspective, a little bit more reflective of what’s happening in our world right now.”
