Howlin' Wolf Records: "BETTER WATCH OUT" music by Brian Cachia

Howlin' Wolf Records proudly presents the score for BETTER WATCH OUT with music composed by acclaimed composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Cachia. The score is performed by the Bratislava Studio Symphony conducted by Vladimir Martinka and concludes with a somber arrangement of "Carol of the Bells," featuring Mark Buys on guitar.

BETTER WATCH OUT is a horror/dark comedy written and directed by Chris Peckover, which has been described stylistically as a HOME ALONE style romp in the fashion of a Tarantino film. The film stars young Australian actors Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, and Ed Oxenbould, and features performances by well-known Hollywood actors Patrick Warburton (SCREAM 3) and Virginia Madsen (CANDYMAN). DeJonge and Oxenbould delivered standout performances in M. Night Shyamalan's THE VISIT, and again in BETTER WATCH OUT, now with another remarkable young actor Levi Miller (PAN). Rounding out the cast of impressive up-and-coming actors are Aleks Mikic and Dacre Montgomery (STRANGER THINGS). For more information, please [CLICK HERE]

Hollywood Records: "Motherland: Fort Salem" music by Brandon Roberts

Hollywood Records releases Motherland: Fort Salem digital soundtrack available for download. Original score composed by Brandon Roberts.  Created by Eliot Laurence (who also created "Claws"), "Motherland: Fort Salem" is set in an alternate, present-day America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country. "Motherland: Fort Salem" follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into terrifying and thrilling early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped with women on the front lines, the fight looming and terrorist threats that are strikingly familiar to our world, but with supernatural tactics and weapons.

Intrada: "MORITURI" Music Composed by JERRY GOLDSMITH, Conducted by LIONEL NEWMAN

Intrada's latest release is a reexamination of Jerry Goldsmith's 1965 score for the World War II drama Morituri, from the 20th Century-Fox library. Morituri is part of a set of war films scored by Goldsmith in the '60s, including The Sand Pebbles, In Harm's Way, and The Blue Max. While originally released by the Film Score Monthly label, due to poor condition elements and limitations in technology of the day, that album featured some compromised sound and inter-cuts from mono sources in order to make the score presentable. Under the detailed eyes and ears of producer Mike Matessino, this new release has been restored from the complete stereo elements and features dramatically improved sound over the previous version.

As Tim Grieving writes in his notes, "This is a score of suspense and action, tension and explosion. Tricks like quivering tremolo strings and rhythmic ticking accomplish the former, and Goldsmith got creative in how he chose to fuel the latter." While the first half of the film is sparsely spotted, Goldsmith relied on his trademark Asian-flavored sound to orient the viewer to the Tokyo and Calcutta locales. Throughout, a theme first introduced in the main title on zither, reoccurs throughout in various guises, tying the score together.

Adapted from a 1960 German novel by Werner Jörg Lüddecke, this morality thriller is set on the high seas during the reign of the Nazi regime. A German man, hiding in luxury in Switzerland, is blackmailed by the English army into posing as an SS officer on a merchant vessel carrying a valuable shipment of rubber from Japan to Germany. His mission: disable the scuttling charges protecting the ship so the Allies can attack it and scoop up the cargo. The film stars Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner.

Note: Due to local restrictions related to the pandemic, shipping time may be slower than usual

Intrada: "HEAVENQUEST: A PILGRIM'S PROGRESS" (Digital-Only) Music by JONATHAN BEARD

Intrada announces its first digital-only release, continuing its support of soundtracks for smaller films in the ever-shrinking physical music distribution business. For its inaugural digital release, Intrada features Jonathan Beard's score to the Vudu-distributed film Heavenquest: A Pilgrim's Progress. Beard, who previously scored What Still Remains and Frank Vs. God, composed a score that served double-duty — embodying both the external, epic onscreen adventure and the inward journey of protagonist Vangel (Patrick Thompson). As Beard notes, "There are numerous extended sequences with no dialogue where the lushness of the score really shines, in addition to some epic battle moments. But it is the quieter poignant material that resonates with me the most and was a particular treat to compose."

The score, a mix of electronics and acoustics, features a large percussion section and highlights vocal, violin, flute and cello solos throughout, plus other-worldly electronics to underscore the darker fantasy side of the film as well as flashback sequences. The epic main title features a soaring vocal by Elyse Willis. "Early on in the scoring process, I holed up in my studio with my synthesizer arsenal for a number of days, and designed numerous electronic textures that we used throughout those portions," said Beard.

In the film, Vangel is a regal man, forced into a journey upon his sudden and mysterious arrest. Injured while escaping, he experiences strange visions and dreams featuring a lady in white calling to him from the unknown North. His adventure takes him through mountains, deserts, lakes and forests, with promises of a better life...if he can make it there alive.

Caldera Records: "FLAME IN THE WIND/SHEFFEY" music by Dwight Gustafson

Caldera Records is proud to present the original scores for the motion pictures “Flame in the Wind” and “Sheffey” from 1971 and 1977 respectively.

Both films were produced by Unusual Film, a division of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. “Flame in the Wind” is set during the time of the Spanish Inquisition and follows a young man named Carlos who is faced with a conflict throughout the course of the motion picture: should he, horrified by the Inquisition, follow the Bible, or adhere to religious tradition?

“Sheffey” was an even bigger undertaking, a lavish and expensive production: Born in 1820, Robert Sheffey was a Methodist evangelist who spent his lifetime taking care of those in need, traveling through Virginia and Tennessee and preaching the word of God.

The music for both films was composed by Dwight Gustafson. Born in 1930, Gustafson was named acting dean of the School of Fine Arts at BJU at 24. He served as administrator, taught, composed, conducted and preached until his retirement in 1997.

The music for “Flame in the Wind” is based around three themes which recur throughout the score, which was issued on an LP by Unusual Films in 1971. Gustafson wrote a leitmotif for the film’s hero Carlos which is supposed to reveal the pathos and heroism of the young man as he tries to find his way. The second theme, a rather eerie, instrumental melody for the Inquisition expresses the repression and terror for which the inquisitors are responsible, while a triumphant chorale seeks to honor the true believers who have lost their lives due to their faith in Jesus Christ during the Spanish Inquisition.

“Sheffey” follows a different musical conception, although Gustafon’s style is unmistakable. Since the film, through the life of Robert Sheffey, tells the story of folk religion, Gustafson decided to employ various folk tunes as seemed appropriate to backbone for his score.

Both “Flame in the Wind” and “Sheffey” were composed, orchestrated and conducted by Dwight Gustafson and recorded with the Bob Jones University Symphony Orchestra, composed of students and faculty. LPs of both scores were made available by Unusual Films/BJU to coincide with the film releases.

The 35th Caldera CD features a detailed booklet-text by Stephan Eicke and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was mastered by Richard Moore and produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg. [http://caldera-records.com/]

Richness, 70's-esque sounding and rather moving scores by composer Dwight Gustafson who I had not heard of until this release. Style on "FLAME IN THE WIND" is pretty heavy on the strings which I love, worth it for sure. Onto "SHEFFEY" feels to be more upbeat, I seem to be weighing in on liking this score better... though both are very well done.

KeepMoving Records: “Saving Leningrad” music by Yuri Poteyenko [Limited Edition of 100 copies]

KeepMoving Records releases Yuri Poteyenko’s latest score for Saving Leningrad. Directed by Alexey Kozlov, the film is based on the true story of Barge 752, one of the biggest shipwreck tragedies of Russian history. Originally designed as a fishing boat, Barge 752 was not designed for passenger transport, yet over a thousand people were loaded onto it during the evacuation of the city. When the ship crashed in a storm, only 200 of the estimated 1500 passengers reached the shore safely. The true story of Barge 752 was kept classified until 2004 and even when it was released to the public, only a few people learned about it. This is about to change with Saving Leningrad, aimed to raise awareness about this shocking event to a wider audience.

The music for Saving Leningrad alternates between high-octane battle pieces as well as Shostakovich-inspired cues that showed the darker side of Mother Nature with the storm being a much deadlier enemy than any German fighter pilots. The other half of the cue features the romantic moments for a couple whose relationship is tested by the tragedy. The soundtrack features almost the whole underscore recorded for the movie. As it is so typical of Russian films, some of the cues have been moved around or repeated, but have been reconfigured for the most optimal listening experience for the CD. The album comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the historical events, the film and the score.

Bazillion Points: "TEXAS IS THE REASON: The Mavericks of Lone Star Punk"

New from Bazillion Points, publisher of definitive music scene histories Swedish Death Metal, Sub Pop USA, Touch and Go, We Got Power!, Murder in the Front Row, NYHC, and Metalion.

Arriving in 1978, hitched to the back of the Sex Pistols tour bus, Texas punk rock soon became as mythic as the state’s devotion to football, cattle, and prayer. Confrontational renegades like the Huns, the Big Boys, and the Dicks led a defiant new era of blood, sweat, and cross-dressing cowboys.

Joining Pat Blashill’s over 200 deep black and white photos here are essays by director Richard Linklater (Slacker/School of Rock); singer David Yow (Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard); drummer Teresa Taylor (Butthole Surfers); and local luminaries Adriane “Ash” Shown and Donna Rich. True mavericks banded together to make a stand, and...Texas Is the Reason.

“Pat Blashill’s beautiful book of photos captures the poetics and energetic eccentricities of the post punk Austin, Texas music scene of the '80s, things one will never get on the internet. Long live books—and this one kicks ass."—Kim Gordon

"Great bands come out of great scenes, so Blashill shoots not just the shows but the community. Even the intimate moments scream punk rock, and even the punk rock moments scream intimacy."—Michael Azerrad, This Band Could Be Your Life!

Walt Disney Records: "ONWARD" music by Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna

Five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile has been tapped to perform an emotionally poignant song, “Carried Me With You,” for the end credits of the Disney and Pixar film “Onward.” The song is written and produced by Carlile, Phil Hanseroth and Tim Hanseroth.  The original motion picture digital soundtrack is available today from Walt Disney Records.

“Carried Me With You’ is a song about not taking love for granted—accepting love even when you don’t feel like you deserve it,” said Carlile. “It’s absolutely wonderful to be a part of a Pixar film! I can’t wait for my little girls to see it! It’ll no doubt have all the wonder, imagination and creative life lessons our family has come to love about Pixar films.”

The all-new, original film features a dynamic score from multiple-award-winning composers Mychael Danna (Oscar® winner for “Life of Pi”) and Jeff Danna. When they ventured to Pixar Animation Studios to learn about a new project from director Dan Scanlon, they had no idea what to expect——and what they heard astonished them. “It’s weirdly and uncannily personal for us,” said Mychael Danna. “As soon as Dan started talking about it, the hairs went up on the back of my neck. The whole story: father is an accountant and dies when the brothers are young, and how the relationship of the brothers is affected. In our case we were 19 and 13.

“As a composer,” continued Danna, “you have to understand and relate to the emotion of the characters. You have to empathize with them and go to your own experiences. Sometimes that can take some effort, but in this case, there was no problem accessing all the personal emotion we have about this story.”

Their score elevates the fantasy aspect of the film, featuring folk and early music instruments, including folk guitars, the plucked-string psaltery, and a crumhorn. Magic is also a key component of the story, so the composers had to design music to complement the spells and effects. “Musically, the magic is big and out of control—trumpets flying around,” said Jeff Danna. “But at the heart of it, there are four notes. Even in the first scene when the magic is out of control—this whirling cyclone of a cue—there are these four notes that hang through it. That’s the thing you can just barely put your finger on. As the film progresses, we present that more and more clearly. Amongst all of the craziness, these four notes tell the story of the magic.”

The score, which features 44 cues, was recorded with a 92-piece orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Dodd.

Intrada: "GOTCHA!" music by Bill Conti

Bill Conti's score to the lighthearted, cold-war espionage, teen action-adventure thriller Gotcha! was one of many scores that got the short shrift on vinyl back in the '80s. It was a time when many a soundtrack collector would walk into their favorite record store and pick up a copy of The Goonies ("just one Dave Grusin cut?!?"), Ghostbusters ("just two Elmer Bernstein cuts?!?"), or The Karate Kid ("NO Bill Conti tracks?") and essentially leave heartbroken. While many of these wrongs have been righted with score-only releases over the years, there are still a handful needing to be addressed. As with Intrada's earlier release of Jerry Goldsmith's The Lonely Guy, Intrada has now righted the wrong of none of Bill Conti's score showing up on the original LP of Gotcha!, even though two score tracks were on the LP (hint to this riddle: they were not film versions).

With the steadfast cooperation of Universal Pictures and Universal Music Group, Intrada presents a score-only release of Bill Conti's lean score. Film antics aside, Conti plays it straight as the film unfolds in Eastern Europe with a score that would have been at home in a James Bond film like The Living Daylights, and with a warm nod to James Horner's Russian thriller music to Gorky Park. While the score is relatively brief, the album is rounded out with a host of alternates and extras. Unfortunately the vocals that appeared on the original LP release were not available for licensing.

Starring Anthony Edwards (Jonathan) and Linda Fiorentino (Sasha), Gotcha! is named after the game of assassination played on Jonathan's college campus. On a trip to Europe with his best friend, Jonathan meets the sophisticated, older woman Sasha. She envelops him in the task of retrieving a package from East Germany, where things turn dark and serious as Jonathan is caught up in a game of cold-war espionage.
