Lionsgate: Gingerclown (DVD + UltraViolet)

1983: A group of high school students are having a great time near Hollywood Hills at the weekend when they bump into the Loser from their school, Sam, who’s just on his way home. Sam would do anything in order to get Jenny’s attention, one of prettiest girls in school. Unfortunately she’s also the girlfriend of the school’s bully, Biff, the quarterback of the football team.

Biff and his buddies are keen to take Sam to the old abandoned amusement park to make him prove his courage as part of their initiation ceremony. They involve Jenny in their cruel game as the grand prize of the competition. Sam accepts the challenge, but the girl wouldn’t let him go in by himself; she follows him into the amusement park and a night they’ll never forget.

Because in the old park, hidden in the darkness, are frightening and somewhat eccentric monsters who love to torture innocent human beings while intensively annoying each other.

Cool, just creepy cool!

NOCTURNA: Visually stunning and wildly inventive, Nocturna explores the mystery of the night in a sweeping adventure full of Alice in Wonderland-like characters and moody, dream-inspired landscapes. PATEMA INVERTED: Time of Eve director Yasuhiro Yoshiura returns with a perspective-twisting sci-fi adventure about two kids separated by opposite gravities. Patema lives in an underground world of tunnels, the long-abandoned ruins of a giant industrial complex. Though she is a princess, she is held back by the rules imposed by the elders of her clan. One day when she is exploring in a forbidden zone, she is startled by a strange bat-like creature and tumbles headlong into a void – and out into the wide open world above the surface, a place with reversed physics, where if she let go she would “fall up” into the sky and be lost forever.

WELCOME TO THE SPACE SHOW: With an intergalactic cast of thousands, Koji Masunari’s colorfully explosive feature revolves around five elementary school kids sent on an unexpected trip to space. While looking for their missing class pet, the children find and rescue a dog that turns out to be an alien, and he invites them to visit the moon as a reward for helping him. Lakeshore Records: REPENTANCE [2014] - Mark Kilian

Lakeshore Records will release the REPENTANCE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on November 11, 2014, and on CD January 13, 2015.  The album features original music by Mark Kilian (SEAL TEAM 8: BEHIND ENEMY LINES, TSOTSI).  The film, a psychological thriller starring Oscar® winner Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps, Nicole Ari Parker and Sanaa Lathan, was released by Lionsgate’s (NYSE: LGF) Codeblack Films earlier this year.

“What the filmmakers wanted was that the duality of the main character be a main theme in the score,” explained Kilian. “We wanted to pull you in to Forest Whitaker's character, Angel, and to feel sympathy for him before the character takes a turn into a darker and creepier rendition.”

An earnest life-coach/author, Thomas Carter (Mackie), is mysteriously abducted by a deranged client, Angel Sanchez (Whitaker), who delves into Thomas' teachings and uses his spiritual messages of Karma - action and reaction, against him to terrorize him and his family for their past sins.

“The music is purposefully almost too warm and light in the beginning, perhaps even over sentimental,” Kilian described.  “Then the music switches gear dramatically bordering on horror, but of a more psychological nature. So when the change comes it is more shocking and visceral for the audience.”

REPENTANCE is currently available from Lionsgate on VOD and DVD.  The REPENTANCE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally on November 11, 2014 and on CD January 13, 2015.

ScreamWorks Records: [REC4]: Apocalypse [2014] - Arnau Bataller

Coinciding with the film’s October 31 premiere in Spain, ScreamWorks Records proudly presents the original soundtrack for last chapter of the popular [REC] franchise: [REC]4. Written and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, the [REC] films (mostly) follow the adventures of television reporter Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) who accidentally comes across a groundbreaking story about an infection that turns people into zombies. Hailed as a ground-breaking experiment with the first person / found footage format, the series now comes to a close with the final chapter on Ángela’s battle with the disease. [REC] 4 has already been announced for a November 12 premiere in France and will get a release in the US by Magnet Releasing.

[REC] 4 composer Arnau Bataller originally studied to play the violin and got a degree on the instrument in 1998 – then he decided to specialize in film music, studying the art form at the prestigious University of Southern California. Since graduating in 2002, Arnau had worked on countless American and Spanish projects. Some of his most notable works include José Luis Alemán’s H.P. Lovecraft-inspired horror films The Valdemar Legacy (2010) and The Valdemar Legacy II: The Forbidden Shadow (2010), the latter of which is available from MovieScore Media. His recent score for Julio Martí’s The Brotherhood (2014) is available from Screamworks Records, just like the music from [REC]3: Genesis.

Though he originally worked on [REC]3 as an orchestrator Bataller’s score for the last episode of the franchise builds upon elements of the story that transpired in the second installment. The key suspense theme (heard in tracks like 'The Medeiros Girl' and 'Inside the House') is reserved for moments of great revelations about the infection and Ángela’s transformation into a real heroine. Recorded in Bratislava and mixed with electronic elements created by the composer himself, [REC]4 is an exciting, suspenseful and sometimes operatic experience that is a welcome companion to the music of [REC]3.

Howlin' Wolf Records Releases: "The Boogey Man" [1980] and "Jacob [2014]"

Music by: Tim Krog
One of several horror films released at the height of the slasher movie craze of the late 1970s and early 1980s, The Boogey Man is an effective mash-up of supernatural cinema’s greatest hits that has developed a strong cult following. Director and co-writer Ulli Lommel was born into a show business family, and began his career as an actor in the German film industry in the 1960s. Striking up a relationship with the celebrated filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Lommel went on to collaborate with him on over twenty projects.

Proud to announce for the first time on Cd and a great iconic score that is music composed and performed by Tim Krog. From our label, Howlin' Wolf Records... we bring you the score to 1980's cult classic "THE BOOGEY MAN"!

Music by: Iain Kelso
The Kell household is far from what you would call an ideal family. Otis is the new head of the household and he makes sure that everyone abides to his rules – when his wife Edith makes a small mistake, Otis severely beats her for her misdemeanor. The violent attack is witnessed by Edith’s young daughter Sissy, who is so accustomed to these attacks that she tends to her mother’s wounds between tea parties. Her guest at these parties is her older brother Jacob, a dimwitted young man who is insanely protective of his sister. When one of Otis’ rage attacks is targeted against the girl, Jacob immediately kills him and lets the decades of regret and humiliation take over his mind. Add in a supernatural twist and with nothing to lose, Jacob turns his wrath against the town that let this tragedy happen.

You know we all have a special friend like Jacob, always looking out for you... well then you should always look over your shoulder. Howlin' Wolf Record releases it's 21st score to the disturbing film "JACOB" composed by Iain Kelso and it's dark piece. I like it, it's good to listen to as you make your way home in the deepest darkest woods.

"Sunset Overdrive" will be released worldwide exclusively for the Xbox One starting October 28.

Intrada: ROBO WARRIORS - RICHARD BAND

The soundtrack to the 1996 Robo Warriors finally makes its premiere release, courtesy of Intrada.  Composer Richard Band was thrilled to release this score, as the composing experience allowed him to combine all the elements for which he loved to compose, all wrapped up in a single package.  It has an epic quality, it features huge action and battle sequences, it has romance, and the story is told through the eyes of youth.  As a result, Band was tasked with bringing out the gravitas, pathos, adventure, love and honor musically in a single score.  The score is composed for large brass section (including 6 French horns!) and synth, giving this sci-fi score a muscular and heroic, yet distinctive futuristic sound.   Intrada presents the complete score from the original sessions elements.

In 2036, Earth has been conquered by the Terridaxx, a race of half-human, half-reptile beings. But a 12-year-old boy named Zac (Kyle Howard) ignites a revolution when he finds the last great Robo Warrior (James Remar) and convinces him to fight again— setting the stage for the ultimate battle to destroy the invaders and save the Earth.

Intrada: NO MAN OF HER OWN/THUNDER IN THE EAST/WILD HARVEST - Hugo Friedhofer

Intrada announces a trio of Hugo Friedhofer scores from the Paramount vaults in this latest edition of the Intrada Special Collection. In Wild Harvest (1947), set against images of combines threshing amber waves of grain, Friedhofer put his “Americana stamp” on the score with a bright major-mode theme, featuring galloping trumpet and woodwind figures set to a Copland-flavored syncopation in the bass line.  In the film, Alan Ladd stars as Joe Gibson, the foreman of an itinerant harvesting crew in wheat country. Robert Preston plays his freewheeling buddy Jim, and Dorothy Lamour sexily slinks her way through the film as a scheming farmer’s niece.

For 1953’s Thunder in the East, Friedhofer gave his signature bold harmonies an Oriental flair.  The film is set during the taut early days of Indian statehood following the end of British rule in 1947. Alan Ladd stars as Steve Gibbs, a Yank who lands in the tiny mountainous principality of Ghandahar with a plane full of guns and ammunition to sell to the local maharaja. With the Brits under threat of death by invading tribal forces, Gibbs must weigh his options between his mercenary ambitions and his feelings for the blind woman he loves (Deborah Kerr).

In 1950’s No Man of Her Own, Barbara Stanwyck poses as the wife of a dead man in order to start a new life and give her newborn bastard son a name. When she goes to live with the deceased’s family, she falls in love with her “husband’s” brother Bill (John Lund), while her former lover (Lyle Bettger) threatens to expose her secret. Friedhofer’s score is built on a trio of strong themes that provide rhythmic and melodic cells throughout the score to increase the tension as Helen’s situation becomes more tenuous and bleak. Throughout the score, Friedhofer uses vibraphone and harp figures to pull Helen in and out of her indecisive and guilty dreamlike state. For all its mid-century melodramatic trappings, Friedhofer utilizes his customary musical craftsmanship to capture the emotion and drama lurking behind the story’s seemingly implausible situations.

No Man of Her Own and what still exists of Thunder in the East have been mastered from 2˝transfers of mono 35mm mag originals, and Wild Harvest comes from acetates housed at Brigham Young University. As an added bonus and included among the extras is a revised track from Bride of Vengeance that incorporates a “Foreword” which Intrada was unable to include on its earlier release of that score.

Kronos Records: VIY [2014] - Music by ANTON GARCIA

Early 18th century. Cartographer Jonathan Green undertakes a scientific voyage from Europe to the East. Having passed through Transylvania and crossed the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in a small village lost in impassible woods. Nothing but chance and heavy fog could bring him to this cursed place. People who live here do not resemble any other people which the traveler saw before that. The villagers, having dug a deep moat to fend themselves from the rest of the world, share a naive belief that they could save themselves from evil, failing to understand that evil has made its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity to gush out upon the world.  Starring JASON FLEMYNG (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and CHARLES DANCE (Game Of Thrones).

The music for VIY, written by ANTON GARCIA (Jacked$, Law Of Corruption) is a rich blent of beautiful swashbuckle melofies, somber passages for solo strings and strong omenous passages featuring the muscle and grace of a full orchestra and choir. The result is very elegant uptempo, energetic and very enjoyable adventure film score. The music was recorded at Smecky Music Studios by the City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Adam Clemens. Produced and mixed by the composer.

The original film soundtrack is available now digitally and will be released on CD on October 27.  The original score soundtrack is available digitally on October 21.  The film has a distinctive Latin American blend of comedy, romance, fantasy and adventure – a combination that the music perfectly captures. Varèse Sarabande: FURY - Steven Price

Varèse Sarabande Records will release the FURY – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD October 14, 2014. The soundtrack features original score by the 2014 Academy Award® Winning composer Steven Price (GRAVITY).

April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

“There's a real mechanized feel to the score, the music is heavy treading,” said Price. There are very heavy rhythms in the action sequences that keep trucking along and, amongst that, you get these emotional reactions that draw you in."

Columbia Pictures presents FURY, in theaters on October 17, 2014.   The FURY - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally and CD on October 14, 2014.

Score for this film is really a great piece of work, I listen to it without seeing the film and my first thoughts it stands alone. It has a great overall sound that I find myself enjoying, if you listen to a few samples I think you will be hooked.

MovieScore Media: Rocks in My Pockets - Kristian Sensini

Kristian Sensini's exceptional understanding of visual storytelling informs the music he writes – a rare combination of talents with added extraordinary work ethic and passion for film and music. He not only saved the day for “Rocks In My Pockets”, but he also pushed it higher up to a new level of filmmaking. Without Kristian’s score the film wouldn’t be complete nor it would be as good is it is now. (Signe Baumane, director)

MovieScore Media presents the digital release of Kristian Sensini’s charming score for Signe Baumane's sensational animated feature, Rocks in My Pockets. The film won the Fipresci prize at the prestigious Karlovy Vary festival and was described as a “modern milestone in animated storytelling” by Variety. The American distribution of the film was picked up by Zeitgeist who premiered the film in New York and Los Angeles in September, to be followed by a nationwide release.

A fantastical tale based on true events about five women of Baumane's family (including herself), the film also includes a mini-history of 20th-century Latvia where the director hails from. Inspired by the animation styles of surrealist Jan Svankmajer and Bill Plympton, Baumane's film employs a unique, beautifully textured combination of papier-mache stop-motion and classic hand-drawn animation which required more than 30,000 drawings.

The score is provided by Italian composer Kristian Sensini. Sensini studied piano and flute when he was a child, then began his first electronic and computer music experiments at the age of twelve. He studied at the Department of Music and Performing Arts in Bologna where he specialized in Musical Education and Anthropology.Taking a special interest in genres such as sci-fi, horror and fantasy, Sensini has received a total number of of nine nominations for Best Score (including Feature Film, Documentaries, Promotion, Best Song, Best Short) at the Jerry Goldsmith International Film Music Award. He also won the Global Music Award for his music for Hyde’s Secret Nightmare.

Nice Job, if you close your eyes and listen to this score you can find yourself drifting into a far off land where things build to a pleasant proportion. I say very whimsical and uplifting, you will really enjoy this score by composer Kristian Sensini and find it to quickly become a favorite for 2014.

Varèse Sarabande: JOHN WICK - Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard

Varèse Sarabande Records will release the JOHN WICK – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 21 and on CD October 27, 2014. The soundtrack features original score composed by Tyler Bates (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, SUPER) and Joel J. Richard (COMPOUND FRACTURE, TV’s RAVENSWOOD).  The album also features the songs “Evil Man Blues” performed by The Candy Shop Boys, “In My Mind” performed by M86 & Susie Q, and “Who You Talkin’ To Man” performed by Ciscandra Nostalghia and co-written by Nostalghia and Bates.

“The initial goal was to get into the headspace of John Wick and the tone/essence of John's story first, rather than jumping right into applying music to picture,” said Richard.  “The opening sequence was the first scene tackled.  It was originally much longer and contained elements from the end of the film. It felt like a logical place to begin the writing process given that the original cut of the scene contained both elements of John mourning his wife and his inner bad-ass.”

Summit Entertainment presents JOHN WICK in theaters on October 24, 2014.  JOHN WICK - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally on October 21 and on CD October 27, 2014.

Sparks and Shadows: THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS - MUSIC COMPOSED BY JOE CLARK

Sparks & Shadows announces the release of THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS soundtrack digitally on October 28, 2014.  THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS is the audio companion to the first five issues of the hit comic book series C.O.W.L., created by Kyle Higgins & Alec Siegel, with art by Rod Reis (who also contributes the cover art for the album).  The recording features original music by Joe Clark.

The gritty style and era of the comic (1962) lends itself to the bebop jazz of the era.  “Before Kyle started the book, he told me the story he had in mind and talked about the musical mood of the project,” said Clark. “Kyle is very musically savvy and had a lot of thoughtful ideas for the sound of the world -- even before he wrote the first draft!”

“In many ways, THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS has been in the works for almost fifteen years, from the day Joe and I met in high school jazz band,” said Higgins. “Of course, we had no idea our collaboration was going to take this form--his album inspired by my crime-noir-superhero-comic-- but considering we became friends over our mutual love of jazz, Chicago, film, and comics, I can't think of anything more fitting.”

THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS is the first release from Sparks & Shadows not composed by the label’s founder, Bear McCreary.  “My goal for Sparks & Shadows was to release unique soundtracks I believe in,” said McCreary.  “Joe Clark's original score for the comic book C.O.W.L. was the perfect choice for our first release of music other than my own, because he perfectly captured the moody, sexy energy of the retro / noir stories. If the elegant painted pages of the comic were to resonate strongly enough, Clark's music might just burst out of them.”

The idea for THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS was to capture an album as if someone recorded it about the heroes of C.O.W.L. in 1962 Chicago.  “Each of the five leads of C.O.W.L.'s first story arc are represented musically: Grey Raven, Radia, and Blaze have their own themes,” described Clark. “John Pierce's hunt for tragic truth can be heard in the song ‘Investigations’. Arclight's more self-destructive tendencies are highlighted in ‘Sparks’, named after the nightclub he frequents. Of the remaining tracks, ‘The Boss’ evokes the Chicago political machine, especially the late mayor Richard J. Daley. I also wanted to have one track that set the mood of C.O.W.L.'s Chicago, arguably a character in itself. We decided on a re-harmonization of the old jazz standard ‘Chicago (That Toddlin' Town)’ and we were fortunate to have Raya Yarbrough sing on the track.”

Sparks & Shadows presents THE C.O.W.L. SESSIONS, available digitally on October 28, 2014. On October 29, Image Comics will release C.O.W.L., Vol. 1: Principles Of Power TP, (collecting issues 1-5).

Other releases from Sparks & Shadows include Bear McCreary's two soundtracks for the series Da Vinci’s Demons (featuring the Emmy® Award-winning title theme), Black Sails (featuring the Emmy® Award-nominated title theme), Defiance, as well as motion picture soundtracks for Europa Report, Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie and Knights of Badassdom.

And now for something completely different... I have been reading this series and so far so cool. I think the music is a nice extra experience

Haunted by nightmares of his biggest enemies, Lord Yu (Wu) and General Xin (Chen), Bang recalls his betrayal of both men due to his overwhelming thirst for power as an uncultured and uneducated soldier, which led to paranoia and fear once he became ruler. Even years after the deaths of Yu and Xin, Bang’s soul is still deeply troubled as he is unable to find peace in the position he dreamed of and fought ruthlessly to achieve.
