Milan Records today announces the release of The Lost Daughter (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film) with music by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Locke). Available to pre-order now, the album features a timeless and atmospheric original score by Hinchliffe for the drama adapted for the screen by Maggie Gyllenhaal, making her feature directorial debut. The hypnotic main theme and lead single “Leda” is available on streaming platforms today. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 10, ahead of Netflix’s theatrical release on December 17 and streaming release on December 31.
Of the soundtrack, Dickon Hinchliffe says, “Scoring ‘The Lost Daughter’ was a unique creative challenge. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s idea was for the music to sound like a ‘found’ record - a vintage piece of vinyl that would become the score for the film. The challenge was to combine this feeling of spontaneity with the complex emotional language of the film and its central character Leda. I wrote a main theme for Leda, and then variations of it that engage with her constantly shifting psychological state. Other themes grew from the flashbacks of her younger self dealing with the emotional pressures of motherhood and her growing unease as these pressures return in the present. We used vintage recording techniques and equipment at Abbey Road Studios to create an analogue sound influenced by film scores, jazz and popular music from the 1950’s and 60’s.”
Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.
Dickon’s unique style of composition and arrangements developed from his classical study of the violin and song writing and recording in bands. A multi-instrumentalist - guitar, violin, cello, piano, - he is a founder member of the British band Tindersticks with whom he wrote orchestral arrangements, recorded numerous albums and toured worldwide.
In 2010, Dickon composed the score to the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning film Winter’s Bone, directed by Debra Granik, that was nominated for four Oscars including Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence and Best Picture.
In 2014, Dickon scored Stephen Knight’s Locke, starring Tom Hardy, a collaboration that continued when he scored season 3 of Peaky Blinders that was written and created by Knight. Collaborations with other directors include Michael Mann (Luck), Oren Moverman (Rampart), Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace), Ramin Bahrani (At Any Price), Ricky Gervais (Special Correspondents), James Marsh (Red Riding, Project Nim, Shadow Dancer). Dickon’s most recent film scores include Idris Elba’s Yardie, Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, Frankie by Ira Sachs, Misbehaviour directed by Philippa Lowthorpe and The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
