WaterTower Music: "SCOOB!" music by Tom Holkenborg

WaterTower Music is excited to announce today’s release of the SCOOB! Original Motion Picture Score, featuring new music from Grammy® nominated composer Tom Holkenborg AKA Junkie XL (Mad Max Fury Road, Deadpool). The first full-length animated Scooby-Doo adventure for the big screen, SCOOB! presents the never-before told stories of Scooby-Doo’s origins and the greatest mystery in the career of Mystery Inc.

Composer Tom Holkenborg continually explores the boundaries of his creative capacity: be it composing, producing, utilizing his multi-instrumentalist skills, or as a music educator and music curriculum developer. That versatility reveals itself also in his creative musical offerings and film scores. Although SCOOB! is the composer’s first foray into animation, his non-traditional approach to the score showcases his nimble adaptability.

Holkenborg discussed his approach to the SCOOB! music. “Scooby-Doo is an iconic character for multiple generations. There are many unique layers in the original series, touching on the counterculture, surf rock and psychedelia; and it was really interesting to try and encompass some of these elements with more contemporary sounds for Scoob!

“This isn't a traditional score,” continued the composer. “It's really out there - with nods to industrial, hip-hop and even gabber. The majority of the score is me blending a lot of hip-hop rhythms and beats with the zanier elements of the original series. We used players on surf guitars and Hammond organs, and it was a great chance for me to get my hands dirty on the bass guitar and iconic drum machines, like the Emulator SP1200. I had a blast working on this. SCOOB! was really a lot of fun. “

The first full-length animated Scooby-Doo adventure for the big screen is the never-before told stories of Scooby-Doo’s origins and the greatest mystery in the career of Mystery Inc.

“SCOOB!” reveals how lifelong friends Scooby and Shaggy first met and how they joined with young detectives Fred, Velma and Daphne to form the famous Mystery Inc. Now, with hundreds of cases solved and adventures shared, Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global “dogpocalypse,” the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined.

Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, is a Grammy nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer and educator whose versatility puts him on the cutting edge of contemporary music, as well as at the vanguard of exciting new film composers.

Tom’s film scoring credits have grossed over $2 billion at the box office and include Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Black Mass, Alita Battle Angel, Divergent, Brimstone, The Dark Tower, Tomb Raider, Terminator: Dark Fate and most recently the record setting Sonic the Hedgehog and the current Netflix series White Lines. He has worked with directors including Peter Jackson, Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron, George Miller, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder and Tim Miller among many others.

Tom is able to draw on his extensive knowledge of classical forms and structures while keeping one finger planted firmly on the pulse of popular music. When this eclectic background is paired with his skill as a multi-instrumentalist (he plays keyboards, guitar, drums, violin, and bass and describes himself as a ‘full contact composer’) and a mastery of studio technology, a portrait emerges of an artist for whom anything is possible.

The foundation for Tom’s work in film started in his native Holland, where he created multiple film scores, and undertook mentorships with celebrated composers Harry Gregson Williams (on “Domino” and “Kingdom of Heaven”) and Klaus Badelt (on “Catwoman”). But things really started to fall into place when Tom started collaborating with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer. Their partnership lasted several years, and most recently included 2016’s blockbuster Batman vs Superman, which marked the seventh scoring collaboration between Holkenborg and Zimmer. Holkenborg worked with Zimmer on The Amazing Spider Man 2 (2014), Man of Steel (2013), Dark Knight Rises (2012), Madagascar 3 (2012), Megamind (2010), and Inception (2010).

Holkenborg’s music career began in 1993 when he started the industrial rock band Nerv and was also producing hardcore and metal bands like Sepultura and Fear Factory. Drawn by electronic breakbeats he started Junkie XL in 1997 debuting with the album Saturday Teenage Kick. Holkenborg went on to produce five more albums under the Junkie XL moniker while playing headline shows all over the world. In 2002 the producer remixer scored a number 1 hit in 24 countries with his rework of “A Little Less Conversation”. Following its success Holkenborg collaborated with celebrated artists like Dave Gahan, Robert Smith, Chuck D, and remixed artists such as Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and many more. In addition, Holkenborg created the music for video games like FIFA, Need For Speed, The Sims, and SSX and commercials for global campaigns like Nike, Heineken, Adidas, Cadillac and VISA.

Throughout his career, education and mentorship have been key themes for Tom. He created a Bachelor Program at the renowned ArtEZ Conservatorium, in his home town of Enschede, for music composition, from which more than 200 students have graduated, and continued his commitment to education on digital platforms, producing the free online tutorial series, Studio Time, which has been watched millions of times.

In 2019 Tom launched SCORE Academy, a ‘full-contact’ education program in Los Angeles. Taking in students annually, SCORE Academy teaches a curriculum designed by Tom, to educate a new generation of film composers and raise their skill sets to the highest level in all aspects of scoring, sound design programming, music production, music technology and film music business. In 2019 Tom also partnered with Orchestral Tools to create Junkie XL Brass, bringing his best-in-breed practises to build and create his first sample library.

WaterTower Music, the in-house label for the WarnerMedia companies, releases recorded music as rich and diverse as the companies themselves. It has been the soundtrack home to many of the world’s most iconic films, television shows and games since 2001.
