Milan Records: "PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND" music by Joseph Trapanese

Milan Records today releases PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) by critically-acclaimed composer JOSEPH TRAPANESE (Shadow and Bone, Straight Outta Compton, The Greatest Showman). Available everywhere now, the album features score music written by Trapanese for the Nicolas Cage-starring western directed by Sion Sono, produced by Patriot Pictures and XYZ Films, fully financed by Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management. Originally making its debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Prisoners of the Ghostland will be available in theaters and on video on demand Friday, September 17 from RLJE Films.

Of the soundtrack, composer JOSEPH TRAPANESE says, “My score for Prisoners of the Ghostland is a love letter to my favorite films and music. You’ll hear clear influences from Spaghetti Westerns and classic sci-fi, as well as from traditional Japanese music, Baroque Sarabande, and French Impressionism. For me, the collision of these musical styles with Nicolas’ expressive performance and Sion Sono's beautiful images is the most gratifying result of the film. What I love most about Sono-san’s work is that regardless of how dark, violent, or unconventional it may be, there is a clear, effusive, and vibrant joy for filmmaking. One cannot watch a Sion Sono film without being infected by his inventiveness, and I’m honored to have experienced his artistry firsthand. I’m thrilled to be sharing this music with you.”

In addition to today’s digital release, Waxwork Records will release an exclusive vinyl edition of the soundtrack, which will arrive as a 2-LP set pressed on 180-gram, colored vinyl with gatefold packaging, liner notes from composer Joseph Trapanese, an art print insert and layout and design by Matt Needle. Pre-order for the vinyl is available now at https://waxworkrecords.com/.

Starring Nicolas Cage, Sofia Boutella, Bill Moseley, Nick Cassavetes, Tak Sakaaguchi. Directed by Sion Sono. Michael Mendelsohn produced the film with Reza Sixo Safai, Laura Rister, Ko Mori and Nate Bolotin. Executive producers on the project included Natalie Perrotta, Nick Spicer, Aram Tertzakian, Yuji Sadai, and Toyoyuki Yokohama.

Joseph Trapanese is best known for his sleek score work for blockbuster films like Tron: Legacy, Straight Outta Compton, The Greatest Showman, Oblivion and the Raid series. As a composer, arranger, and producer for movie, television, theater, and video game music, he has collaborated with a number of mainstream musical acts. His first major break came in 2010 when he worked with Daft Punk on the sweeping digital soundtrack to Disney's Tron reboot/sequel. Trapanese followed that success by creating a score with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park for the American release of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film The Raid: Redemption (he would continue without Shinoda in 2014 with The Raid 2). That same year, he helped with arrangements on a handful of tracks for M83's breakthrough hit Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, which led to the pair's collaboration on the 2013 Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Oblivion. For 2017's The Greatest Showman, Trapanese worked alongside Pasek & Paul and John Debney, producing songs and co-composing the score.

Notable scores include Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021), Finding Ohana (2021), Spontaneous (2020), Project Power (2020), Lady and the Tramp (2019), Arctic (2019), Robin Hood (2018), Only the Brave (2017), the landmark rap biopic Straight Outta Compton (2015), Earth to Echo (2014), and the second and third installments of the Divergent series, Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016). For television, he has composed scores for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone (2021), USA's Unsolved (2018); Amazon's Jean-Claude Van Johnson (2017); ABC's Quantico (2016-17), Freeform's Dead of Summer (2016), and Disney XD's Tron: Uprising (2012). Video game scores include ILMxLab’s Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge (2020), EA's Need for Speed: Payback (2017) and Ubisoft's The Crew (2014).

In the studio and in concert, in addition to Daft Punk, Dr. Dre, M83, and Mike Shinoda, he has worked with 3OH!3, Active Child, Alessia Cara, Aloe Blacc, Amon Tobin, Dia Frampton, Dierks Bentley, The Glitch Mob, Haim, Halsey, The Haxan Cloak, James Newton Howard, Janelle Monae, John Newman, Kelly Clarkson, Kendrick Lamar, Moby, S. Carey, Sohn, Steven Price, White Sea, and Zedd. As a conductor, he has appeared at The Hollywood Bowl and Central Park, as well as with The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, AUKSO Poland, and numerous festival ensembles and Hollywood orchestras.

Born in Jersey City, Trapanese earned his B.A. in classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music. He went on to study at UCLA for his M.A. and taught electronic music composition at the school from 2008-2011. In 2016, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In 2013, alongside a tenacious group of composers, artists, and musicians, Trapanese founded The Echo Society. Aiming to inspire each other and the community around them, the group creates and performs new music showcasing the unique talents and environments of Los Angeles.
