La-La Land Records will release the soundtrack for FIELD OF LOST SHOES composed by Frederik Wiedmann (GREEN LANTERN ANIMATED SERIES, THE DAMNED) on CD September 9th and digitally the following week.
“I dreamed of a day where I get to write a epic, thematic orchestral score for a period drama, and that dream seemed just so far away. But years later, I met FIELD OF LOST SHOES,” described Wiedmann. “During the spotting session, I realized I was about to get the chance to write my dream. As I discussed the tone of the film with the director Sean McNamara, editor Jeff Canavan and producer Brandon Hogan, I knew it would be that sweeping, epic, orchestral score that I dreamed of composing.”
FIELD OF LOST SHOES is based on a true story of the American Civil War, culminating at the Battle of New Market, May 1864. A group of teenage cadets, sheltered from war at the Virginia Military Institute, must confront the horrors of an adult world when they are called upon to defend the Shenandoah Valley. Leaving behind their youth, these cadets must decide what they are fighting for. The movie’s title refers to the moment when 257 young VMI cadets charged successfully through a soggy wheat field toward Yankee positions—even as many of their shoes remained stuck in the mud—forcing the Union forces to withdraw. The film stars David Arquette, Tom Skerritt, and Jason Isaacs.

Producer Frank Yablans was enamored of Michel Legrand’s score for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which he considered “one of the great scores of all time. We needed that kind of feel in [Midnight]. … I just felt he was the right person for it.” After scoring the cat-and-mouse love games of The Thomas Crown Affair and the yearning obsession of Summer of ’42 (and winning two Oscars in the process), Legrand was indeed the “right person” to bring a contemporary flair to this period melodrama. The film opens with soaring shots of decaying Greek ruins and the sunlit Mediterranean blue of the Aegean with a bouzouki setting the musical stage. As the camera pans to the prison, Legrand’s lush main theme soars in the strings. With Legrand trademarks like repeated chromaticism, intervallic sequences and unexpected modulations, the theme provides a romantic backdrop to the vengeful machinations that are brewing. The film also features a number of silent montages that allows Legrand’s score to breathe.
For this long-overdue CD premiere of The Other Side of Midnight, Intrada was provided access to the original two-track stereo album master prepared by the composer in 1977 for the 20th Century Records LP, vaulted in beautiful condition by UMG. The twelve tracks of the CD are presented in the same order as the original album.
Based on Sidney Sheldon’s 1974 bestseller, The Other Side of Midnight stars Marie-France Pisier (Cousin Cousine) as Noelle Page, a young actress who beds her way into becoming the mistress of a wealthy Greek tycoon (Raf Vallon), all the while plotting revenge on the pilot who deserted her in World War II Paris, Larry Douglas (John Beck), and his wife (Susan Sarandon).

For the 1983 film Gorky Park, composer James Horner brilliantly blended orchestral and synthesized textures, wielding an impressive array of stringed instruments (including balalaika, mandolin, guitar, oud, harp and cimbalom), and featuring such distinctive textures as accordion, the piercing otherworldly tones of Nyle Steiner’s EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) and the cavernous groanings of Craig Huxley’s Blaster Beam. The miasma introduced during the main title is both brooding and clamorous, evocative of the institutionalized corruption that follows. During the film’s frequent chase sequences the music shifts gears, becoming a churning machine that drives the action relentlessly forward. The contrast between agile drum kit, serving up a funky urban vibe, and a weighty motif in fortissimo low brass—a potent combination of unison trombone, contrabass trombone and tuba—is particularly striking. This material builds on Horner’s score for 48 Hrs. and anticipates later works such as Commando, although each of these retains a unique palette and energy. In stark contrast to the score’s bleaker and more corrosive elements is Horner’s theme for Irina, an aching minor-mode melody that emerges from a dreamlike mist of vibraphone and shimmering strings.
To present James Horner’s complete music for Gorky Park, Intrada had access to the original recording session elements vaulted by MGM, including both 2? and ½? rolls of tape. Remixing was critical in that previous releases featured a unique anomaly. The array of gentle instruments such as the harp and vibraphone playing lengthy, exposed pianissimo passages (with long pauses built into the phrases) resulted in a noticeable degree of background noise, easily removed now, but not back in 1983 when the master was prepared. Perhaps in compensation, the original “stereo” mixes for these cues were essentially mono mix-downs with high strings (violins, violas) and low strings (cellos, basses) panned dead center. Some of the nuances— such as harp and vibraphone—were also focused in the center. The tracks played back with less noise, but lost almost all of their stereo separation as a result. With this new presentation, James Horner's score can be heard in beautiful, crisp stereo sound -- and the release features over twice as much music as the previous albums including additional music, alternates and film versions.

When three faceless bodies are found in Moscow’s Gorky Park, the case falls into the lap of Arkady Renko (William Hurt). The detective attempts to ditch the case when his old KGB nemesis Pribluda (Rikki Fulton) begins sniffing around, but their mutual superior Iamskoy (Ian Bannen) insists that Renko follow the investigation wherever it may lead. But things grow complicated when he encounters William Kirwill (Brian Dennehy), a bullish American detective out for vengeance, and a beautiful dissident named Irina Asanova ( Joanna Pacula). All roads converge on Jack Osborne (Lee Marvin), an American sable fur mogul whose powerful connections may prove to be the end of Renko.

Lakeshore Records: "HANNIBAL" Season II Volumes 1 and 2 - Brian Reitzell
Lakeshore Records will release two new volumes of music from the hit NBC television series HANNIBAL, composed by Brian Reitzell (LOST IN TRANSLATION, BOSS). The HANNIBAL SEASON TWO Volumes 1 & 2 Original TV Soundtracks will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23, 2014. As with the two volumes of music from season one, released digitally August 5th and on CD September 2nd, each track on these two albums is a suite of music from an episode of the series.
“In this second season of HANNIBAL each episode is named after a Japanese food course,” said Reitzell. “It kind of gave me the opportunity to exploit my deep affection with Japanese films.”
Over the last decade and a half, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and music supervisor Brian Reitzell has been on a mission to further elevate the layer that music adds to a film's life. He has created his own unique method of scoring films, drawing equally from his experience as a recording and touring musician with bands such as Redd Kross and Air, and his massive knowledge of recorded music.
Acting as both music supervisor and composer, he often blurs the lines between score, source music, and sound design. His vision is to create a seamless landscape of songs, score, and found music for each soundtrack. Brian’s explorations of new sounds add unique character to visual images. He often has instruments custom built or even invented for individual film scores and wholeheartedly embraces the Brian Eno philosophy of the recording studio as his instrument. Brian has thrived on collaborations with musicians from outside the Hollywood film composer network and has worked with some of today’s most acclaimed musical artists including Air, Richard James (Aphex Twin), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Elliott Smith, Britt Daniel (Spoon), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Explosions In The Sky, Fever Ray, Robert Plant, Daniel Lopatin and Ensemble Matheus.
Brian's past films include THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, LOST IN TRANSLATION (for which he received a BAFTA award nomination), CQ, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, STRANGER THAN FICTION, THUMBSUCKER, MARIE ANTOINETTE, THE BROTHERS BLOOM, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, BEGINNERS, and RED RIDING HOOD. His video game credits include his critically acclaimed score for THQ’s RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON and the upcoming WATCH DOGS for Ubisoft. Reitzell scored Turner Prize winner Elizabeth Price’s WEST HINDER video installation. He has also scored and music supervised Sofia Coppola’s latest feature, THE BLING RING as well as Gus Van Sant’s PROMISED LAND. It was Van Sant who got Reitzell into television, bringing him on to score and supervise the show BOSS for cable network Starz.
One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial-killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this drama we see where this incredible story begins.
“Hannibal”, based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ classic novels, is from Gaumont International Television in association with Sony Pictures Television Networks and airs on NBC in the U.S. The series was developed for television by Bryan Fuller (PUSHING DAISIES, HEROES), who also serves as showrunner and executive producer.

I really just announced the release of the first season and I am thrilled to announce the second season score music by composer "Brian Reitzell". Doing another creepy sound score and freaky come on close your eyes... answer the door someone is knocking. Nice job, nice job indeed! If looks could kill, they probably will... it's worth a listen.
