Filmtrax (via BFD/The Orchard) has digitally released the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to David Ayer’s indie crime thriller The Tax Collector, which was released on August 7 by RLJE Films. The film topped the box office its opening weekend, claiming the No. 1 spot. The Hollywood Reporter says composer Michael Yezerski’s original score brings a sense of “churning dread.” The Tax Collector is available on digital and On Demand.
 
Contrary to what is expected for a crime thriller, David Ayer wanted a heartfelt score. Michael came up with an understated score that plays into the emotion, rather than the violence taking place on screen. Michael describes the music as “humanistic,” where he utilized his own vocals, guitars, and strings to accomplish this sound quality. The characters have tough exteriors, but the score hints at the undercurrent of emotional turmoil within them.
 
“With a blend of acoustic folk, hip hop, and Latin influences, this score sounds like nothing else I've done. I take inspiration from sounds that these characters would listen to in their daily lives. Yes, the music is gritty and dark, but it's also deeply humanistic and even beautiful at times. This is musical world-building to match the epic imagery and frenzied action of David Ayer's vision,” says Michael Yezerski.

WaterTower Music is excited to announce the new soundtrack release of the fan-favorite DC/Warner Bros. DC's Stargirl: Season 1 (Original Television Score) features 22 tracks from the debut season of the hit series. Recently wrapping its first season on both The CW and DC UNIVERSE, DC’s Stargirl was recently renewed for a second season exclusively on The CW. Based on the character created by Geoff Johns, DC’s Stargirl features an epic score by the award-winning film and television composer Pinar Toprak, who received her first Primetime Emmy® nomination this year for her work on HBO’s McMillions.
 
“I’m a huge fan of show creator Geoff Johns and everything he’s done,” remarked Toprak. “When we met, the way he talked about Courtney, the character, and his vision for DC’s Stargirl really touched my heart. About DC’s Stargirl Composer Pinar Toprak... Pinar Toprak is one of the most refreshing voices in music composition today, with a diverse body of work spanning film, television, and video games. In addition to DC’s Stargirl, she has composed for major Super Hero sagas like Captain Marvel, and Warner Horizon Scripted Television’s Superman prequel series Krypton. She also scored HBO’s six-part docuseries McMillions, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and earned her a 2020 Emmy® nomination. In addition, she has written music for Epic Games’ massively popular online video game Fortnite. Away from the big screen, Toprak crafted the new main theme for Walt Disney World’s iconic EPCOT theme park and wrote music for Christina Aguilera’s 2019 Xperience show in Las Vegas.
 
Toprak was the recipient of the 2019 ASCAP Shirley Walker Award and also won the 2019 IFMCA (International Film Music Critics Association) Award for “Best Original Score for a Documentary Film” for her score to The Tides of Fate. She had previously won two other IFMCA Awards for her work on The Wind Gods and The Lightkeepers. which was on the Academy Award® shortlist for Best Original Score in 2011.
 
Toprak was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, where she began her classical music education at the age of five. After studying composition and multiple instruments at the conservatory, she moved to Chicago to study jazz, before continuing on to Boston for a degree in film scoring from Berklee College of Music. She then moved to Los Angeles, earned a master’s degree at CSUN in composition at age 22, and has quickly become an active and reinvigorating composer in Hollywood.

Walt Disney Records: "STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDER" music by Gordy Haab and Stephen Barton

 

The Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order original soundtrack is now available on all digital platforms.  With music by Gordy Haab and Stephen Barton, the Walt Disney Records soundtrack features 44 original tracks, totaling over three hours of music.   The score was recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

Since the game's release in November 2019 by Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment, the score has won the SCL award for Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media, "Music of the Year" and "Best Original Choral Composition" at the G.A.N.G. awards, "Video Game Score of the Year" at the 2019 ASCAP Composer's Choice Awards, and was nominated for "Best Music Supervision" in a Video Game by the Guild of Music Supervisors.

About Gordy Haab: Gordy Haab is a multi award-winning film, video game and television composer who has written music for many well-known titles, including most recently: Microsoft's "Halo Wars 2, and EA's "Star Wars: Battlefront II," and "Star Wars Battlefront I," which won Music of the Year, Best Interactive Score, and Best Instrumental Score at the 2016 GDC G.A.N.G. Awards, and was nominated for a BAFTA for Excellence in Audio Achievement. These have included scoring the video game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," which has sold over 14 million copies to date, and contributing music to "Shrek 2" (including co-writing a song on the platinum-selling soundtrack) and the first two "Chronicles of Narnia" movies.

Walt Disney Records releases the digital original soundtrack to Disney's new movie "The One and Only Ivan," streaming exclusively on Disney+ today. Intrada: "THE DON IS DEAD" Music Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH

 

Intrada's latest release features Jerry Goldsmith's score to the 1973 Universal Pictures film The Don is Dead. Following Intrada's earlier release this year of Take Her, She's Mine, Don is also a score never before released. Like other Goldsmith's scores of the period such as A Step Out of Line, the composer chose a lean, gritty, percussive approach, focusing on the suspense and tension of the proceedings. On top of the orchestra, Goldsmith introduces a lone, pulsating electronic motif to complete the natural acoustics, performed on stage live with the orchestra. The electronics provide a prominent rhythmic figure used during suspense scenes that build slowly and climax in exciting bursts of orchestral violence. Although a mafia film, sandwiched in between releases of The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II, Goldsmith offers no sweeping traditional Italian melodies like those films, but rather a more subtle theme for guitar and flute introduced later in the film. The film's love theme, "Our Last Night" is first heard in a vocal arrangement, on which Goldsmith collaborated with his wife, Carol.

This Intrada presentation of the complete score was mixed, edited and mastered from the ½” three-channel scoring session masters, stored in pristine condition within the Universal vaults.

Based on a novel by Marvin H. Albert, The Don Is Dead, the complex story had three young mob players—hot-headed Frank Regalbuto (Robert Forster) and brothers Tony (Frederic Forrest) and Vince (Al Lettieri) Fargo—becoming involved in a power struggle when Frank’s father, head of a mafia crime syndicate, dies and Frank is passed over for leadership in favor of elder statesman Don Angelo DiMorra (Anthony Quinn). Scheming capo Luigi Orlando (Charles Cioffi) and his greedy wife, Marie (Jo Anne Meredith), urge Frank’s girlfriend Ruby (Angel Tompkins), a would-be singer, to approach DiMorra for career help—and Ruby understands that seducing the lonely Don is the fast track to getting him in her corner. When a mysterious source leads the jealous Frank to an apartment Ruby shares with DiMorra, Frank goes berserk and beats Ruby brutally enough to put her in the hospital, pitting himself and his partners against the powerful Don DiMorra while Orlando and his wife wait to pick the spoils of the gang war.

RLJE Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, has picked up select rights to Z from Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural. Z will be released on September 1, 2020 on VOD, Digital HD, DVD and Blu-ray.

Directed by Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) who co-wrote the movie with Colin Minihan (What Keeps You Alive, Grave Encounters), the horror film stars Keegan Connor Tracy (Final Destination 2), Jett Klyne (The Boy), Sean Rogerson (Grave Encounters), Sara Canning (War for the Planet of the Apes), Stephen McHattie (Watchmen), and Chandra West (White Noise). Cinema Libre Studio: "ENTER THE FORBIDDEN CITY" [BLU-RAY/DVD]

 

Set in the Qing dynasty 230 years ago, this lush, epic drama brings to life the historical origins of Peking opera through the tale of two young opera singers who risk their lives to perform for the emperor at a special celebration for his 80th birthday.

Directed by Mei HU and written by Zou Jingzhi (Zhang Yimou’s “Coming Home,” Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmaster”), the film won the Chinese American Film Festival’s top prizes for best director and best feature film earlier this year and will forgo a planned theatrical release and to be released on Bluray, DVD and On Demand by Cinema Libre Studio starting August 18th.

Based entirely on historical events and figures from the Qing Dynasty, the period in which Peking Opera first began to flourish in Imperial China, the film was developed by Hu Mei over a period of six years. Production was significantly delayed due to a fire that burned down the studio the crew was utilizing, taking two years to complete in 2018.

No sets were designed for the film, which is shot entirely on location, although over 200 hand tailored costumes were created in order to replicate Peking Opera clothing from the Qing Dynasty. Hu is well-known in China for several acclaimed television and film works. Her previous film Confucius, which stars Chow Yun Fat, was released in the US in 2010.

To grasp the history behind the movie, Hu and her team traveled to the mountainous areas of China's Anhui province, where opera played a key part in the education of children.

 

"The role that opera plays here is that it condenses China's thousands of years of music, drama, politics, culture, worldly wisdom and moral principles into various repertoires," says Hu. "The about 1,000 popular opera songs in the area were passed down from parents to children, from generation to generation.”

Made with a budget of about $14.3 million (RMB100 million), it was distributed in China by state-owned Huaxia in theaters.

Yue Jiu, the most famous opera singer in all of Imperial China, is expelled from the capital city for vulgarity. He heads south, where he encounters Wang Runsheng, a promising young opera singer for the Chuntai Troupe. When the Emperor invites all of China’s opera troupes back to the capital city for a celebration, Yue Jiu and Runsheng are forced to choose between their reputations, their safety, and their love of opera.

So much so, in fact, that nearly an album’s worth of music was released after each episode aired, culminating in this 72-track Season 1 soundtrack album.

Oscar® nominee, six-time Grammy-winner and 2018 USA Fellow trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies – past and present.
 
From his expansive work composing the scores for Spike Lee films ranging from the documentary When the Levees Broke, about Blanchard’s hometown of New Orleans during the devastation from Hurricane Katrina to the epic Malcolm X; and the latest Lee film, Da 5 Bloods, Blanchard has interwoven melodies that created strong backdrops to human stories. 
 
Blanchard received an Oscar® nomination for his original score for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.  He was also BAFTA nominated for his original music for the film.  He won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition for writing “Blut Und Boden (Blood and Soil)” a track from BlacKkKlansman.
 
More recently, Blanchard has composed his second opera, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, based on the memoir of celebrated writer and The New York Times columnist Charles Blow.  The libretto was written by Kasi Lemmons and commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis where it premiered in June 2019.  The New York Times has called Blanchard’s opera “inspiring,” “subtly powerful” and “a bold affecting adaptation of Charles Blow’s work.”  The Metropolitan Opera of New York will premiere Fire in 2022-23, making it the first opera composed by an African American composer to premiere at the MET.  Blanchard’s first opera, Champion also premiered to critical acclaim in 2013 at OTSL and starred Denyce Graves with a libretto from Pulitzer Prize Winner, Michael Cristofer.
 
With his current quintet E-Collective, featured on the score to BlacKkKlansman with a 96-piece orchestra, Blanchard delivered “a soaring, seething, luxuriant score,” the New York Times. In Vice Magazine, Blanchard elaborates, “In BlacKkKlansman it all became real to me. You feel the level of intolerance that exists for people who ignore other people’s pain. Musically, I can’t ignore that. I can’t add to that intolerance. Instead I have to help people heal from it. “ 
 
Some of Blanchard’s other film credits include the Kasi Lemmons’ films, Eve’s Bayou; Talk to Me; and Harriet; George Lucas’ Red Tails; and Tim Story’s Barbershop.  Blanchard also wrote the original score for the powerful documentary On the Record which was directed and produced by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering and premiered on HBO Max on May 27.
 
Regarding his consistent attachment to artistic works of conscience, Blanchard confesses, “You get to a certain age when you ask, ‘Who’s going to stand up and speak out for us?’ Then you look around and realize that the James Baldwins, Muhammad Alis and Dr. Kings are no longer here...and begin to understand that it falls on you. I’m not trying to say I’m here to try to correct the whole thing, I’m just trying to speak the truth.” In that regard, he cites unimpeachable inspirations. “Max Roach with his ‘Freedom Now Suite,’ John Coltrane playing ‘Alabama,’ even Louis Armstrong talking about what was going on with his people any time he was interviewed. Herbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter who live by their Buddhist philosophy and try to expand the conscience of their communities. I’m standing on all of their shoulders. How dare I come through this life having had the blessing of meeting those men and not take away any of that? Like anybody else, I’d like to play feel good party music but sometimes my music is about the reality of where we are.”

It was a great documentary and not to sound too puny "it was pretty revealing", I learned so much as they covered the history. From the views of people jumping into nudity with out a care or second thought and then I forgot about Mary Poppins.
