WaterTower Music is pleased to announce today’s release of the 62-track Lovecraft Country (Soundtrack from the HBO® Original Series), featuring music from the first season of Lovecraft Country, which airs on HBO/ HBO Max, and is Based on Matt Ruff 's novel of the same name.
In addition to 11 tracks performed by the show’s cast in the first season, the album showcases original music by multiple Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman, whose career spans film, television video-game and concert music; and Grammy-winning, Oscar- nominated producer/ musician/ songwriter Raphael Saadiq.
Karpman discussed working on the show and the soundtrack. “I am so proud to be a part of this project along with my partner and brother Raphael Saadiq. We both owe a huge debt of gratitude to (Lovecraft Country Executive Producer) Misha Green who gave us a wide palette to musically explore every conceivable genre while focusing on the hearts and souls of our heroes. The album” continued the composer, “is organized by episode, hopefully taking the listener back to many visceral moments in this remarkable series.”
About Lovecraft Country... Based on Matt Ruff 's novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country, which airs on HBO/ HBO Max, follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he meets up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. Lovecraft Country is executive produced by Misha Green, who also serves as showrunner, J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange, Daniel Sackheim and David Knoller; based on the novel by Matt Ruff. The 62 track soundtrack from Season One features 11 songs that were performed on camera by the Lovecraft Country cast along with music by Grammy winning producer Raphael Saddiq and multiple Emmy winning composer Laura Karpman. About Laura Karpman... Five-time Emmy winning composer Laura Karpman brings a unique and conceptual voice to her significant body of work spanning film, television, and video games. In film, she is known for her scores to Miss Virginia which stars Uzo Aduba, the Netflix fan-favorite romantic comedy Set It Up, Sony’s Paris Can Wait starring Alec Baldwin and Diane Lane, Lionsgate’s The Cotton Club Encore, Fox Searchlight’s Step and Black Nativity, as well as the animated shorts Sitara and Walk Run Cha-Cha which was nominated for an Oscar in 2020. For television, Karpman most recently scored the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country and the Discovery Channel docu-series Why We Hate, for which she won the Emmy for “Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary”. Her other television credits include WGN America’s award-winning historical drama series Underground, the PBS’ Peabody award-winning series Craft in America, and Showtime’s Sid and Judy.
About Raphael Saadiq... Grammy-winning, Oscar- nominated musician/ songwriter/ go-to collaborator/producer for some of the biggest names in R&B, incl. Solange, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, and D’Angelo. Raphael Saadiq came up in the 80s and 90s w/ the multi-platinum R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! before embarking on a critically acclaimed solo career. He’s and active producer, co-writing career-defining hits for D’Angelo (“Untitled (How Does It Feel)”) and Solange (“Cranes in the Sky”) and working w/ artists like Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. Saadiq has been named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list. He also served as musical director for the 2018 Oscars telecast. Saadiq is the composer in residence for Issa Rae’s hit HBO show Insecure.
