Supported by the Film Fest Gent’s World Soundtrack Awards, Carter Burwell - Music For Film is the fifth release from the series and fourth on Silva Screen Records. Each year an outstanding film music composer is invited to present their work during the annual World Soundtrack Awards Gala & Concert and this year’s guest of honour is Carter Burwell. As part of the celebrations, Film Fest Gent and partner Brussels Philharmonic have recorded a CD of Carter Burwell’s music in advance of the concert, to be held on 17th October.

Burwell’s ground-breaking scores created for the quirky Coen Brothers films and his work for many other directors indicate a fierce originality and a strong feeling for the eccentric, the experimental and the minimalistic. His unique collaborations with the Coen Brothers started in 1984 with Blood Simple, followed by Miller’s Crossing , Fargo and No Country for Old Men. Other compelling and original scores from Burwell’s opus include Being John Malkovich, Twilight, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Burwell also has a long standing collaboration with American independent film director Todd Haynes and for his films, he has written enthralling and beautiful scores - Carol, Wonderstruck and Mildred Pierce.

“In reflecting on the honour that the Ghent Film Festival has paid me this year, I’ve looked back at the random path that’s brought me here. It had never been my intention to be a composer of film scores - or a composer at all. But after Joel and Ethan Coen bestowed that title on me with the film 'Blood Simple', and then asked me to write an orchestral score for 'Miller's Crossing' (knowing perfectly well I had no experience doing that), I began to believe that I was in some sense a composer and have tried to be worthy of that title.

A film composer is two things: a composer and a filmmaker. It’s not easy to separate these two things, and I generally find it off-putting to take the music, written for particular characters, particular dialogue, particular action, out of its context for performance on its own. In the case of the compositions presented here, I’m endlessly grateful to Dirk Brossé and the Brussels Philharmonic for giving the music its own life.” - Carter Burwell

Coinciding with the show’s premiere in Germany on September 11, 2018, MovieScore Media goes back in time with the sweeping historical miniseries Clash of Futures, exploring the dramatic era of the 1920s and '30s. The eight-part series follows the fates of extraordinary men, women and children from France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Austria, Sweden, Poland and the Soviet Union using their own diary entries, letters and memoirs. These are people drawn into the war by their convictions, who with their loves and decisions bring the history of Europe with all its contradictions to life.

''For Clash of Futures, the music needed to carry us across 21 years of rich history in Europe, from 1918 to 1939” explains Laurent Eyquem about his score. “To cover and link this dense and fascinating historical period, director Jan Peter and I chose one symbolic instrument to be the common thread: the trumpet. From the haunting sound of the Harmon Cup Trumpet to the solemn voice of the classic trumpet, it's soulful sound takes us on a journey from the emergence of jazz in Europe at the end of World War I, to the ascendance of Nazism and Fascism, through to the military marches in 1939. Throughout, the common thematic thread in this score is the perpetual, vacillating uncertainty of this period in history, reflected in an omnipresent dissonance that floats, discernibly, just below the surface."

Born in Bordeaux, Laurent Eyquem’s first musical mentor was his father who played the clarinet in the local orchestra. Unfortunately, Laurent’s career was jeopardized by a near fatal accident that almost cost him his right arm. Following a successful therapy, he emerged as one of the most impressive talents in the international film music scene. Eyquem’s 2013 scores for Copperhead and Winnie Mandela garnered multiple nominations from around the world, including three nods from the IFMCA (Breakthrough Composer of the Year; Best Original Score for a Drama Film; Composer of the Year), and the Discovery of the Year nomination from the World Soundtrack Academy. Just this week, he received 2 nominations for his Soundtrack of Nostalgia at the World Soundtrack Awards, for both the Public Choice Award and Discovery of the Year categories.

COMRADE DETECTIVE is fictional gritty 1980's Cold War Romanian police procedural steeped in Communist propaganda. Composer Joe Kraemer offers the following statement about the special dynamic of the show, “In the same way actors revel in being able to speak as different people, I had a lot of fun pretending I was a Romanian composer living in the early 1980s writing pseudo-American cop-show music for the communist government. The director, Rhys Thomas, and the producers at A24 and Channing Tatum’s Free Association, gave me tremendous freedom to chase after that evocative sound of early ‘80s TV.  I was delighted to be able to record the score in Vienna, and to be able to work with my friend, Dimitrie Leivici, as concertmaster, who is Romanian by birth!  He actually lived in some of the locations where the show took place when he was child.  It was also terrific to be reunited with the immensely talented engineer Casey Stone, who captured the sound so effectively and mixed the music so perfectly, just as he did for me on 'Rogue Nation' in 2015. 

It’s immensely gratifying to be able to share the music with everyone now, thanks to the two upcoming releases from Lakeshore Records.  The first is an LP, and vinyl is really cool, as the ‘retro’ vibe of the format meshes perfectly with the feel of the show.  The second, digital download format allows me to include a lot more of the score itself, which I am really happy to have available for listeners who have asked me about being able to hear it away from the show.

HBO: "BARRY" Season 1 on DVD... Bring home the Madness!

Barry is an American dark comedy television series created by Alec Berg and Bill Hader that premiered on March 25, 2018, on HBO. It stars Hader as the eponymous lead character, a Midwestern hitman who travels to Los Angeles to kill someone and then finds himself joining the local arts scene. 

On April 12, 2018, it was reported that HBO had renewed the series for a second season. The series has been met with a positive critical response, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Hader and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Henry Winkler.

Barry's having problems finding meaning in his life. A former solider, he has made a career for himself as a contract killer through the aid of a family friend. When he leaves the Midwest to go to Los Angeles to complete a hit that involves a student from an acting class, the apathy he has felt transforms into an almost obsessive interest in building a new life on the West Coast. Barry's been told for years that the life of a hit man is the only one he can ever experience given his past and his mindset, but he begins to see another possibility with the help of an acting coach and a new love interest.

Intrada's latest release from the vast collection of composer Richard Band is the 1993 Moonbeam Entertainment production of Prehysteria!. Moonbeam Entertainment was a new, family-friendly company spun off by the more adult, horror-minded Full Moon Pictures. At the time, Band had been so focused on the horror genre that he viewed his transition to family adventures as an invigorating breath of fresh air. While budgets had become crunched, Band had found a way to combine live instruments with sampled instruments, retaining that orchestral approach he cherished while succumbing to the realities of 1990s budgets. For Prehysteria!, Band was able to include string and brass sections along with a combination of sampled instruments – is signature sound for the ensuing decade.

In the film, a museum curator enters a forbidden temple in South America, discovering a nest of eggs. Stealing the eggs for his museum, a mix-up ensues and the curator ends up with mere fossils while the eggs end up with a farmer who takes them back to his family. They hatch, revealing live, miniature dinosaurs. The curator wants them back and he hires two robbers to bungle their way through their mission.

October 1st marks the 50th anniversary of George A. RLJE Films (NASDAQ: RLJE) will release the horror film SLEEP NO MORE on VOD, Digital and DVD on October 2, 2018. Written by Jason Murphy (The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen) and directed by Phillip Guzman (Dead Awake), SLEEP NO MORE stars Keli Price (“Side Effects”), Lukas Gage (Assassination Nation), Yasmine Aker (12 Strong), Brea Grant (“The Arrangement”), Stephen Ellis (“You’re the Worst”) and Christine Dwyer (“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert”). RLJE Films will release SLEEP NO MORE on DVD.

In SLEEP NO MORE, five graduate students are conducting a study to prove the theory that once you’ve passed 200 hours without sleep, you will never need sleep again. As the hours tick by and their struggle to stay awake intensifies, they each start to have strange and unsettling experiences. Visions from the past, violent impulses and terrifying waking nightmares begin to take hold and turn this experiment into a desperate fight for survival.
