Kronos Records: THE MAID'S ROOM [Score] - Arturo Rodriguez

THE MAIDS ROOM is an accomplished and polished work which works so well with the images on screen but also has the ability to stand alone as just music to be listened to savored and enjoyed. Rodriguez is almost lulling the listener into a false sense of security and well being with his richly emotive theme for Drina with its delicate piano solo and plaintive woodwind that are punctuated by harp, the music radiates an even greater warmth as the string section are ushered into the piece but still retains a fragility that is mesmerizing. This central theme is heard throughout the score either fleetingly or in more sustained arrangements and becomes not just the theme that accompanies the films central character but also the foundation of the score. The composer weaves his simple but effective motif for Drina into the fabric of the score and it acts like a musical adhesive that binds the remainder of the soundtrack together. This is the first soundtrack penned by Arturo Rodriguez to be released by Kronos Records, his talent is immense and his gift for melody is outstanding.  Watch out for this truly talented Mexican composer.

Coinciding with the Theatrical Opening of the film in Los Angeles cinemas this weekend.

I am not familiar with composer "Arturo Rodriguez" works, though if this score is any indication of what we could except from his style I would have to say "SIGN ME UP". Manages to give a subtle and sweet score that starts to turn to a much darker side, which I am very much in favor for. I welcome him to my list of composers who I will be watching out for more, for now I suggest you go to Kronos Records and listen to samples.

KeepMoving Records: Zero Option/The Sleepless - Terry Plumeri

Even though he has been proven to be prolific in the fields of jazz and classical music as well, Terry Plumeri may be better known to film scoring fans as the composer of passionate crime and war stories, where he gets to focus on the character’s emotional journey rather than the action on screen. This approach can be heard in titles like Terry’s debut score for Black Eagle (1988) or Charles Bronson’s franchise-closing opus Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1994). Terry’s works in the field have been acknowledged with a number of awards: his music for the 1994 One False Move (a member of The New York Times List of the 1000 Best Films Ever Made) was nominated in the Best Score category at the IFP Spirit Awards. In addition to orchestrating his own music, Terry also likes to revisit his roots as a musician by playing bass on several of his scores.

Following our release of Night Eyes 3, KeepMoving Records offers a double-header CD featuring two of the composer's lesser-known works. Directed by David Batts, Zero Option can be best compared to Paul Haggis' Crash as it also tells the story of three unrelated individuals whose lives will collide in a most unusual manner. These are a Japanese family where the lack of cultural traditions lead to generational differences, a typical businessman whose faith in capitalism is about to be shattered and a criminal whose third strike may get him to jail sooner than he wanted. Plumeri treats each storyline with its own distinct musical ideas, ranging from Japanese influences to dissonance and a hit of Americana with solo guitar.

The second film is called The Sleepless, which was directed by Domonic Paris who is now known for his animated features like Fly Me to the Moon and the Sammy movies. The Sleepless tells the tale of Uncle Mike, a high ranking gangster whose nephew is also in for a bright, crime-filled future, but the disharmony in the family structure leads to inevitable tragedy. Plumeri's music for The Sleepless has an edgy neo-noir feel where the obligatory genre template (the muted trumpet solo familiar from Nino Rota’s The Godfather scores) is placed into an orchestral context with a few electronic additions.

Featuring two excellent scores for the price of one, the CD also comes with an 8-page booklet with commentary by Gergely Hubai and personal impressions by Terry Plumeri describing how his music fits these lesser seen gems.

La-La Land Records: BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM - Robert J. Kral

La-La Land Records will release the soundtrack for BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM composed by Robert J. Kral (SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY, DUCK DODGERS) on CD August 26, 2014.  This limited edition CD (1500 units) will contain 4 exclusive tracks not available elsewhere.

“BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM marks a departure from what we normally do from a music standpoint,” said director Jay Olivia. “We usually do the operatic epic music that we've all become accustomed to in the live action and animated comic book films for the last twenty five years…. James Tucker, my producer, was very supportive of the idea of doing a more contemporary take on the superhero music and when Rob sent us his first pass of the score, we were tremendously pleased.”

BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM is a direct-to-video animated superhero that is part of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The film is based on the universe of the BATMAN: ARKHAM video game franchise, and is a direct sequel to BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS. Jay Oliva and Ethan Spaulding direct, with a script by Heath Corson and James Tucker producing. The film was screened at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International on July 25, 2014, and was released digitally on July 29 and on physical media on August 12.

In the universe of BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM, the government teams up a group of super-villains with the code name Suicide Squad and forces them to break into Arkham Asylum to bring back top secret information the Riddler has stolen, and Batman soon becomes involved.  Things go from bad to worse when one of the Squad (Harley Quinn) frees the Joker, who has the means to not only blow up the asylum, but most of Gotham City as well.

DC Animation presents BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM is currently available digitally and will be available on physical media on August 12.  The BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally and on CD from www.lalalandrecords.com on August 26, 2014.

Anything Batman, sign me up... this is another aspect on the Batman franchise, this time it's taking us to  Arkham... the score does not disappoint.

Intrada: Blow Out [Score] - Pino Donaggio

Just a year after composer Pino Donaggio paired with Brian DePalma on the Hitchcock-inspired Dressed to Kill (soundtrack also available on Intrada), the team tackled another genre-mashup thriller -- Blow Out. Donaggio’s music is a meld of his infectious synthesizer-led rhythmic voice from lower-budget horror scores of the era (to accompany the film's false opening), to richly melodic, dynamically vivid orchestral score worthy of the best A-list pictures.  The score is anchored around an exquisitely sad and regretful love theme, introduced on piano and strings when we first meet the character of Sally. To characterize his male protagonist and antagonist, Donaggio took an opposing approach. In a number of cues he applies a funk-guitar vibe to Jack, establishing him as proactive and upbeat.

After Pino Donaggio recorded his 55-minute score for Blow Out on 2″ 24-track tape at A & R Recording Studios in New York City, he mixed and edited approximately 48 minutes of it down to ¼″ 15 ips two-track stereo for inclusion on a possible soundtrack album. The album never materialized and those two rolls of stereo tape are all that has survived of the score. They are the source of this current CD, made available courtesy of MGM and housed in perfect condition in their vaults.

In the film, a presidential candidate dies while riding in a limousine with an apparent prostitute named Sally (Nancy Allen). The sound editor, Jack (John Travolta), rescues her from the sinking car— making both of them key witnesses to the accident. In fact, the “accident” was the handiwork of a rogue political assassin named Burke, who seeks to discredit Jack as a witness.

Intrada: The Baytown Outlaws - Christopher Young/Kostas Christides

The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in The Baytown Outlaws—a wickedly playful, high-velocity action comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, mad mobsters, road pirates, tomahawk-wielding bikers, and tricky femmes fatales when they finally try to do a single good deed.  To accompany the film, composer Christopher Young and Kostas Christides composed a score entirely for rock band.  While this may not seem out of the ordinary, Young explains: "It’s hard to believe it took so long, approximately 30 years, for someone who initially wanted nothing more than to be a rock, then jazz, drummer. In fact the music is not quite rock since the film is set in Alabama. Let’s just say it’s tinged with Southern sunsets, but also with a taste of tumbleweed and tundra driving down desert drags. You know the scene." Accompanying the raucous outing, literally, is Christopher Young performing on piano and...screams. "You can’t miss my piano performance, because that instrument appears only once on the CD, and the only accompaniment to it are birds (not kidding)."

Young has always looked for a new sound, something unique, to expand his artistry when composing film scores.  This score and album confirm that his creativity is still working overtime to do something entirely different.

HOUDINI Vol. 1 and 2 [Score] - John Debney

Lakeshore Records will release the HOUDINI – Original Television Soundtrack Volumes 1 and 2 digitally on August 26th and on CD September 30, 2014. The album features original music by John Debney (Sin City, The Passion Of The Christ).

“I would best describe the HOUDINI score as Industrial Rock meets Gypsy rooted mystery,” said Debney.  “Uli Edel gave Houdini such a stylish and über-contemporary look. His attention to detail was impeccable and high spirit of creativity was infectious!”

John Debney continues to receive accolades for his outstanding work. Last year, he received a Prime Time Emmy nomination for his work on the miniseries Hatfields And Mccoys.  In 2005, he became the youngest recipient of ASCAP's prestigious Henry Mancini Lifetime Achievement Award.  Debney has again broken new ground composing for the videogames Lair (2007) and The Sims Medieval (2011).  His Lair music was nominated for a BAFTA and he was awarded Best Videogame Score by The International Film Music Critics Association. John Debney’s recent accomplishments include scoring the Steve Jobs biopic Jobs.  His recent projects include Draft Day and Walk Of Shame, both feature soundtracks on Lakeshore Records.

The two-night scripted miniseries HOUDINI follows the epic tales of Harry Houdini as he emerges as America’s first bonafide world-renowned superstar. From humble beginnings at circus sideshows to sold-out concert halls, Eastern European immigrant Erich Weiss rose to become a household name across the globe–Houdini. Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) stars as The Great Harry Houdini as he finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era, from U.S. presidents to Arthur Conan Doyle and Rasputin. A thrilling ride throughout Harry’s psyche, HOUDINI delves deep behind the curtain into his life through his stunts, his visions and his mastery of illusion. Joining Brody is Kristen Connolly (House of Cards, The Cabin the Woods) as Bess Houdini, the love of Harry’s life and right hand when it came to some of his most amazing feats, and Evan Jones (A Million Ways to Die in the West, The Book of Eli, Gangster Squad) as Jim Collins, Harry’s assistant and confidant.

“All if the score is in the main electronic, with the addition of a solo gypsy violin and cello. Lots of Zither and other stringed instruments were also used,” explained Debney.  “Early discussions on tone centered around the idea of giving Houdini a very edgy and contemporary sound while always grounding the music with period splashes of style.”

History presents HOUDINI – a special two-night event  airing Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2  at 9/8C.  The HOUDINI – Original Television Soundtrack Volumes 1& 2 will be available digitally on August 26th and on CD September 30, 2014.

HOUDINI is a Lionsgate/A+E Studios co-production. The creative team includes Gerald W. Abrams (Nuremberg, Family of  Spies) and Andras Hamori (Sunshine) as executive producers, Academy Award® nominated writer Nicholas Meyer (The Seven-Per-Cent Solution), Academy Award® nominated director Uli Edel (The Baader Meinhof Complex, Last Exit to Brooklyn), Academy Award® winning production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein (Amadeus), and cinematographer Karl Walter Lindenlaub, whose work ranges from American blockbusters (Independence Day) to award-winning art house movies (Black Book).

Just Announced, I am excited about this Mini-Series and well as you all know I am a fan of composer John Debney. Score music that I can only describe as retro-industrial-techno feel where he incorporates a metal to metal like feel and then brings in music in like an illusion is being preformed right before your eyes.

Sony Music/Masterworks: The Giver [2014] - Marco Beltrami

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the original motion picture score album of The Giver. Composed by two-time Academy award-nominee Marco Beltrami, the score for The Giver is available digitally on August 12 and on CD on September 16. Based on Lois Lowry's award-winning and bestselling novel, the highly anticipated film features an outstanding cast including Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Cameron Monaghan and Taylor Swift. The Giver will be released in theaters nationwide on August 15.

Composer Marco Beltrami’s success in composing the scores for mainstream films like The Giver owes much to his background in concert composition. His mastery of a big range of orchestral effects is evident in this score, which calls for predominantly pensive moods. The album opens with shimmering, ethereal sounds in the main titles, then proceeds with serene themes and orchestration in “Jonas Gets the Gig” and “First Memory”, and a beautiful liquid melody for keyboard in “Color.” These moods change with the stirrings of unease and drumbeats in the track “Happiness and Pain,” while the second half of the album expresses the developing conflicts of the movie with the martial percussion and metallic threat of “War,” the dissonances of “Accelerated Training,” and the excitement of “Escape from the Nursery” and “Capturing Jonas.” The recurrence of motifs and the musical summing-up in the end credits with choral effects and a lovely string solo bring unity and a calming conclusion to the score.

Beltrami was nominated in 2007 for his work on 3:10 to Yuma and again in 2010 for his score to The Hurt Locker. He studied at the Yale School of Music and in Italy, before learning the trade of film composition with the great Jerry Goldsmith. Beltrami’s composing career began with the thriller Death Match in 1994. He gained recognition for his work on horror films such as Mimic (1997), The Woman in Black (2012), and all four films in the Scream series (1995–2011). He has also composed two scores for the Die Hard franchise: Live Free or Die Hard and A Good Day to Die Hard, the latter is also available on Sony Classical.

The haunting story of The Giver centers on Jonas (Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. The Giver is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

Sony Masterworks comprises Masterworks, Okeh, Portrait, Sony Classical, RCA Red Seal, and Masterworks Broadway imprints. For email updates and information please visit www.SonyMasterworks.com.

KeepMoving Records: Say It In Russian [2007/2014] - Pinar Toprak

Directed by Jeff Celentano, Say It in Russian is a passionate romance with a dash of thriller inspired by the real life experience of its main star, Agata Gotova. The film tells the story of Daria Larina, a Russian socialite who meets American businessman Andrew Lamont in the city of lights, Paris. Upon returning to her Russian home with her new boyfriend, Daria is distraught by the cold treatment from her father. What she doesn't realize is that his dad is a former oligarch turned Minister, whose life is seriously threatened by his old business partners.

The music for Say It in Russian was written by Istanbul-born composer Pinar Toprak. Completing his musical studies at the Istanbul State Conservatory, Berklee College of Music and California State University, Northridge. Pinar got her first gigs by doing musical programming for some Hans Zimmer scores at Remote Control Productions. She also worked with master orchestrator William Ross before getting her first major movie, Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis of Evil. Since then, she has worked on everything from family animation (Light of Olympia) to creature features (Ogre), comedies (The Lightkeepers) and sports documentaries (The Wind Gods) as well.

The dark and passionate score inspired by the musical legacy of Russian romanticism was recorded by 75 musicians of the Belgrade Film Orchestra, making it the composer’s first symphonic recording. KeepMoving Records is proud to present the complete underscore from the film, parts of which were available only on promotional releases by the composer. By doing a new mix and including several short but sweet cues for the first time, we’re happy to give you the definite presentation of this sometimes tragic, sometimes propulsive, but on the whole wonderful score.

The CD comes with an 8-page booklet with commentary by Gergely Hubai and personal commentary by Pinar Toprak recalling the excitment of recording her first ever symphonic score.

Lakeshore Records: Trust Me [2014] - Mark Kilian

Lakeshore Records will release the TRUST ME – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 26, 2014.  The album features original music by Mark Kilian (PITCH PERFECT, TSOTSI).

“Director Clark Gregg and editor Kathryn Himoff and I spent much time conceptualizing and molding what the tone of the score should be,” explained Kilian.  “The movie presented a fine line between noirish darkness and cleverly written comedy that feels sharp and real, especially for Hollywood folks.”

To achieve this Kilian described, “I assembled a collection of struck ethnic idiophones like gamelan, glass marimba, bass marimba, metal buzz balafon, hapi drum and glock and started recording moods and patterns on which I could build further. To invoke a noir attitude I used trumpet (both muted and open) and string bass and then filled in as was needed with strings and some manipulated guitar soundscape work.”

Clark Gregg leads an all-star cast in the sharp comedy TRUST ME, as Howard Holloway, a down-on-his luck agent for child actors and truly one the last good guys left in Hollywood. After discovering a 13-year-old acting prodigy (newcomer Saxon Sharbino), he is poised to close the deal of a lifetime which would catapult his tween client and, at long last, himself, into the big time. With the support of his gorgeous new neighbor (Amanda Peet), he must wrangle the actress' volatile, overprotective father (Paul Sparks), dodge a scheming producer (Felicity Huffman), and outwit his uber-slick nemesis. As he arrives on the brink of the Hollywood dream that's eluded him for a lifetime, he begins to sense that his innocent young starlet may not be quite what she seems. Also featuring Allison Janney, William H. Macy, and Molly Shannon.

STARZ Digital Media presents TRUST ME currently available in theaters and on VOD.  The TRUST ME – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally August 26, 2014.

“In THE DAMNED we follow a family as they deal with their hidden secrets while, at the same time, try to defeat an ancient evil,” described Garcia. “The only thing I can say about the amazing score Freddie created this time is that I thought that I had a very clear idea of what I wanted for it to sound like until the moment I listened to the first sample that he sent me.”

THE DAMNED tells the story of American David Reynolds (Peter Facinelli-TWILIGHT movie series, NURSE JACKIE), widowed from his Colombian-born wife, who flies to Bogota with his new fiancée (Sophia Myles – TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION) to retrieve his rebellious teenage daughter Jill (Nathalia Ramos - SWITCHED AT BIRTH). Produced by Universal Television for A&E, BATES MOTEL is a television series drama inspired by Hitchcock’s genre-defining film,  PSYCHO is a contemporary exploration of the formative years of Norman Bates, relationship with his mother, Norma, and the world they inhabit. "There are several musical themes that weave their way throughout the series," said Bacon. "Most prominent are probably the quasi-love theme between Norman and Norma, and a more mysterious theme that we first hear in connection with the house which evolved into the overall theme of the show and its psychology. In addition are thematic accompaniments for many of Norman's relationships, which include his brother Dylan, friend-zone girlfriend Emma, object-of-desire Bradley, and forbidden fruit Miss Watson."

Universal Television and A&E present BATES MOTEL, season three will premiere in 2015. The BATES MOTEL - from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally and on CD August 25, 2104.

Keeping up with the creepy family and tv shows that have that eerie sense, here comes another popular kid and his mother. Nice job on the score, it held my attention and I felt like I was in the house with Norman and his mother.

Set in present-day France, Rosemary’s Baby centers on a young married couple that escapes New York and moves to Paris with hopes of leaving their sad past behind. After a series of unfortunate events, Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse are presented with an offer they can't refuse – an apartment at the most prestigious address in the city. Problem is, it comes with a haunted past, and an immeasurable price.

Zoe Saldana Avatar, Star Trek Into Darkness, Out of the Furnace
Patrick J. Adams TV’s “Suits,” The Waterhole, 6 Month Rule, HBO’s “Luck”
Jason Isaacs Harry Potter franchise, Abduction, TV’s “Awake”
Carole Bouquet Unforgivable, For Your Eyes Only

It is not they way you remember Rosemary's Baby... it's well acted and shares up a lot more and steps away from the original film. It takes shape and gives you a darker feel on how we all come to terms with... well the baby!

Lakeshore Records: NBC's "Hannibal" Score by: Brian Reitzell

LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS:
FOUR VOLUMES OF MUSIC  FROM THE HIT NBC TV SERIES
HANNIBAL
Featuring Original Music By Brian Reitzell

Lakeshore Records will release four volumes of music from the hit NBC television series HANNIBAL, composed by Brian Reitzell (LOST IN TRANSLATION, BOSS). The HANNIBAL SEASON ONE Volumes 1 & 2 soundtrack will be available digitally on August 5th and on CD September 2, 2014.  The HANNIBAL SEASON TWO Volumes 1 & 2 Original TV Soundtracks will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23, 2014.

“Visually it’s so artfully done and quite fantastical, so I see it like an opera staging, otherwise I might be more disturbed,” said Reitzell of HANNIBAL.  “Listening to the music alone is scarier than in the context of the show.”

One of the most memorable instruments from the first season of the show is a bullroarer.  Reitzell describes, “It is an aboriginal instrument.  Every continent on Earth has a form of bullroarer — it’s the oldest instrument known to man.”  The one he uses, he got from eBay for $5.   The instrument is spun around your head and creates a low hum that has movement in space and not just sound.  Recorded in surround sound for the series.  “So when you listen to it, it spins around your head, and it’s really powerful.”

Over the last decade and a half, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and music supervisor Brian Reitzell has been on a mission to further elevate the layer that music adds to a film's life. He has created his own unique method of scoring films, drawing equally from his experience as a recording and touring musician with bands such as Redd Kross and Air, and his massive knowledge of recorded music.

Acting as both music supervisor and composer, he often blurs the lines between score, source music, and sound design. His vision is to create a seamless landscape of songs, score, and found music for each soundtrack. Brian’s explorations of new sounds add unique character to visual images. He often has instruments custom built or even invented for individual film scores and wholeheartedly embraces the Brian Eno philosophy of the recording studio as his instrument. Brian has thrived on collaborations with musicians from outside the Hollywood film composer network and has worked with some of today’s most acclaimed musical artists including Air, Richard James (Aphex Twin), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Elliott Smith, Britt Daniel (Spoon), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Explosions In The Sky, Fever Ray, Robert Plant, Daniel Lopatin and Ensemble Matheus.

The Hannibal Lecter character is known as a gourmet chef, with a penchant for using unusual ingrediants.  Episodes from the first season were named after elements in French cuisine and the second season from Japanese haute cuisine.  “Scoring is very similar to cooking,” described Reitzell. “Except with music you can throw all the spices in to the pot and then take them out one by one to see what flavors arise out of uncommon combinations. If you put too much white pepper in your sauce it’s very hard to take it out but with Protools. You just delete the white pepper.”

Season 3 of the NBC series HANNIBAL will air spring 2015.  HANNIBAL SEASON ONE Volumes 1 & 2 soundtrack will be available digitally on August 5th and on CD September 2, 2014.  HANNIBAL SEASON TWO Volumes 1 & 2 Original TV Soundtracks will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23, 2014.
