Holiday Horror... ScreamWorks Records: Lucifer's Angels by John DelVento

ScreamWorks Records releases John DelVento’s music for the independent horror film Lucifer’s Angels. The story follows three different groups of people as their paths will eventually cross in the the Catskill Mountains of New York. We meet a group of four friends who go on their first camping trip together, a ghost hunter and his fiancé from investigating mysterious disappearances and a father/son team who live in the haunted woods. The bad reputation of the mountain is linked with four inmates at the King Lakes Psychiatric Hospital for the Criminally Insane whose horrible acts committed in 1978 still take a toll to this day… Lucifer's Angels is directed, co-written, photographed and edited by Ricky McDonald.

Lucifer's Angels composer John DelVento took his musical training to The Hartt School of Music, Dance, and Theatre as a double music major, where his music composition career was born. After a brief stint as an urban music producer, DelVento started to get more involved with writing for agencies and music libraries, leading to placements with The Science Channel, Food Network, Nike, Toyota, Covergirl, Pepsi and Visa. His most recent release (apart from Lucifer’s Angels) is the Beltrami-esque Reaper, now available on iTunes. Apart from being a media composer, John is also one of the few soloists of the euphonium, a rare brass instrument that allowed him to appear as a soloist all over the world..

Eerie sounds wrapped around a scary score, captured nicely by composer John DelVento as we are thrown into a dark place. Paying homage to a classic horror film and style, John DelVento keeps us guessing where he wants to take us next...

Holiday Horror is Here... with THE DEVIL'S HAND [DVD]

THE DEVIL'S HAND: Terror descends upon a devout community when The Devil’s Hand grabs hold on DVD (plus Digital) and Digital HD December 16 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Theatrically released in 2014, the spine-tingling story is available On Demand now. The terrorizing satanic flick from Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Christian E. Christiansen (Best Short Film, Live Action, At Night, 2008), stars Rufus Sewell (Dark City, The Illusionist), with Jennifer Carpenter (Showtime’s “Dexter,” Quarantine, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and Golden Globe® nominee Colm Meaney (AMC’s “Hell on Wheels,” Con Air). The Devil’s Hand will be available on DVD.

The Devil’s Hand tells the tale of six girls born on the sixth day of the sixth month, setting in motion an ancient prophecy—on their 18th birthday, one of the girls will become the Devil’s Hand. As the day nears, the young women begin to disappear. Threatened by the town’s fiery religious leader (Meaney), the remaining girls, Mary and Ruth, join with Mary’s father (Sewell) to uncover the chilling truth behind the evil that grips New Bethlehem.

Okay, it was interesting overall... just people falling into the similar horror fails. One being, watch those girls don't let anything happen to them... yet every time you turn the girls are on their own. If you know there is a prophecy in this small community don't get all shaken up when bad stuff happens, just like the prophecy said it would.

Intrada: Queenie (MiniSeries) [1987-2014] - Georges Delerue

Airing on ABC over two nights in May of 1987, Queenie was based on Michael Korda’s fictionalized account of actress Merle Oberon, second wife of his uncle, Sir Alexander Korda. Oberon, often celebrated for her “exotic beauty,” claimed to the end of her life that she was an Englishwoman born and raised in Tasmania.  She was, in fact, born in Bombay, and her mother was Ceylonese, and Queenie was terrified that knowledge of her mixed-race heritage might destroy her career. The miniseries of Queenie throws in plenty of drama along the way: poverty, prejudice, rape, an unjust accusation of murder—all before Queenie Kelley (Mia Sara) flees her native India for England, where, after further travails, she approaches film stardom.

One of the more striking elements of Queenie  is its score by Georges Delerue.  His musical signatures—the boundless energy, that razor-sharp psychological acuity, and an unsurpassed romantic lyricism, as described by Julie Kirgo in her liner notes— are on lavish display in his score for Queenie, which is instantly recognizable as classic Delerue. The film’s setting in India allowed him to introduce some rich new colorings to his music, particularly in the string and percussion departments. Sitars and tablas—or sound-alikes—are significant components of this score, along with bowed string instruments and struck bass.

The score is presented here from the original session masters stored at 20th Century Fox in pristine condition, primarily in stereo with a few tracks taken from the 3-track split mono elements mixed by Mike Matessino so that they blend seamlessly into the stereo program. The album also includes an alternate main title that serves as an overture to the album.

Intrada: A Far Off Place [1993-2014] - James Horner

Combining epic adventure, intimate character drama, fierce action and a good-sized dose of exotic color, the 1993 Disney film A Far Off Place provided Horner with a broad canvas, inspired by the novels of Sir Laurens van der Post. Many of the elements that feature prominently in Horner’s score are present from the film’s opening minutes. The first music to appear is an idyllic passage highlighting flute and gentle percussion, used to underscore establishing shots of an elephant herd at a watering hole. Horner returns to this tone later in the film, using it to emphasize the underlying harmony of life on the savanna—even in seemingly inhospitable locations. Here, however, Horner’s expression of peace is violently interrupted by his jarring music for the poachers. Horner paints the band of killers with rampaging percussion, low brass and piano, both here and during the later scenes of slaughter at the lodge. These initial minutes serve as a prelude to the entrance of Horner’s sweeping, majestic main theme for the film. Strings and flute are the instruments most prominently associated with this theme, while also featuring statements for winds and brass. Shakuhachi also makes its first appearance here, punctuating the music with intense, breathy flourishes.  It almost serves as an overture for the score and story to come.

The scoring sessions for A Far Off Place were originally recorded on 2” 24-track tape over five days during January 1993 (with additional sessions in February for keyboards and percussion), then mixed down onto ¼” Dolby SR-format two-track tape by engineer Shawn Murphy at Todd-AO. They were vaulted on DAT, and our expanded CD was mastered directly from those DAT masters.  This new presentation has been remastered and lavishly expanded with more than half an hour of additional material not featured on the 1993 release.

The film tells the story of Nonnie Parker (Reese Witherspoon), the teenage daughter of local gamekeepers, and her relationship with a tourist boy named Harry Winslow (Ethan Randall, now going by Ethan Embry). When Nonnie’s parents and Harry’s father are murdered by a band of poachers working for corrupt ivory smuggler John Ricketts (Jack Thompson), the children decide to flee across the arid wastes of the Kalahari rather than risk certain capture by trying to reach a nearby village. They are guided on their journey by Xhabbo (Sarel Bok), a mystical youth who communes with nature and whose visions seem to portend the future. It is Xhabbo’s timely intervention that spares Nonnie and Harry from the poachers’ slaughter, and his wisdom that allows them to navigate the desert as they strive to reach Nonnie’s uncle, the poacher-hunting Col. Mopani Theron (Maximilian Schell), before Ricketts and his thugs ride them down.

MUCK Kickstarter Passes $225,000 in Pledges!

Anchor Bay Entertainment has unveiled the first Official Theatrical Trailer for MUCK, as well as new exclusive poster art (attached). Horror and gore fans alike should feast their eyes on this freshest take yet on the MUCK trailer, viewable on the main page of the Muck Kickstarter: bit.ly/MuckKickstarter.

Speaking of Feast, the MUCK Kickstarter campaign to fund the prequel, MUCK: Feast of Saint Patrick, is still under way, and recently surpassed the $200,000 mark on the way to the goal of raising a quarter of a million dollars. Just like the original, the MUCK prequel will boast death-defying stunts and practical effects, shot without the use of CGI – all in 4K Ultra HD.

As a production company, WithAnO wanted to give fans and Kickstarter backers alike an insight into what they’re supporting, and so recently released this exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of one of MUCK’s incredible stunts: http://youtu.be/VzU2RZettks.

The daring stunt-woman in this case is Alexa Marcigliano, and her courage is palpable in the clip, sprinting O.S. through the pitch-black living room before bouncing on a trampoline, then hurling herself through the 4 x 6 picture window, out into the night. To say that hitting her mark was highly important is obviously an understatement. Jump too short, and Alexa would land head-first on the edge of the porch outside; too high, and she would hit window frame; too long, and she would overshoot the padding buried beneath the grass outside. And, since there was only room in the budget for one window, it had to be done in a single take.

These are the kinds of stunts that Steve Wolsh lives to shoot as a writer/director, but these kinds of stunts take time, money, and not least of all, the ultimate creative control that can only be afforded by independent financing. So remember, any mention or write-up on the Muck Kickstarter campaign directly furthers our goal of making another epic, independent horror film for true horror fans. The MUCK franchise is so close to this goal – a goal that at one time seemed insurmountable! – and we have all of you, our loyal supporters to thank.

MUCK stars horror legend Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Part VII, VIII, Jason Goes to Hell, and Jason X), Lachlan Buchanan (Pretty Little Liars), and Bryce Draper (Bound), and co-stars 2012 Playboy Playmate of the Year Jaclyn Swedberg, Puja Mohindra, and Laura Jacobs. The middle chapter of an independently financed horror trilogy, MUCK will be unleashed in theaters on Friday the 13th, March 2015.

Holiday Time: Wishin' and Hopin' - Matthew Llewelyn

MovieScore Media joins the Christmas celebrations with its brand new holiday release: Matthew Llewelyn’s music for Colin Theys' Wishin' and Hopin', starring Molly Ringwald and Annabella Sciorra with narration by Chevy Chase. Based on the New York Times bestseller novel by award winning author Wally Lamb, Wishin' and Hopin' paints a nostalgic and vivid picture of 1960s New York through the story of Felix Funicello, a Catholic school fifth-grader whose biggest boast is being cousins with beach party queen Annette Funicello. This holiday season however shapes up to be different with the arrival of a new substitute teacher and a feisty Russian student who could teach our hero some extracurricular lessons...

Llewellyn masterfully combines the familiar with a contemporary flair while illustrating his craftsmanship and diversity as a thematic orchestral composer employing the full dynamic range of the orchestra.  Recorded with the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, Llewelyn’s score positively sparkles with memorable motifs and sweeping orchestrations at center stage throughout this fun and festive film for the holiday season. "Director Colin Theys and I knew that the score needed to have that warm, comedic feeling,” explains Llewellyn. “It needed to be something that resonated not only with the holiday season but also to help tell a story that we can all relate to. If you like thematic, orchestral film scores then this one is for you!"

It's a score you can close your eyes and feel, not just hear it... it's a pleasant piece of music that is captured wonderfully by composer Matthew Llewelyn

Nonesuch Records: Inherent Vice [2014]

Nonesuch Records will release Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack to Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s new feature film, Inherent Vice, on December 15, 2014 (with the vinyl to follow March 3). An adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, Inherent Vice, which will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters starting on December 12, is set in the tail end of the psychedelic ’60s and stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. In addition to nine compositions by Jonny Greenwood, the soundtrack features “Spooks,” an unreleased Radiohead tune performed by members of Supergrass, as well as other recordings from the movie’s era (complete track list follows). Additional performers include The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Neil Young, Can, and The Marketts, among others.

This is the third Anderson film that Greenwood has scored. Their previous collaborations include the critically praised soundtrack for 2007’s Academy Award-winning There Will Be Blood and 2012’s The Master, both released by Nonesuch. Rolling Stone said of The Master that its “visual poetry is matched by Jonny Greenwood’s haunting, hypnotic score.” The New Yorker described the music as “rich and inventive.” The Times of London exclaimed: “Jonny Greenwood’s score is superb.” Of the There Will Be Blood score, the Boston Globe noted that the “squealing, cicada-like strings of…Popcorn Superhet Receiver masterfully evoke the film’s apocalyptic vision of the West.”

Widely known as the guitarist for Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood also is a highly respected composer. In addition to There Will Be Blood and The Master, Nonesuch also released his score for Norwegian Wood and his collaboration with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki last year.

Nonesuch also released the soundtrack for Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love—a smart pop score by composer/producer Jon Brion—in 2002. Anderson’s other previous films—all of which have been highly praised—include Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999).

It's fun, it's stylish and I really enjoyed the great music from this film!

Fans of Elmer Bernstein... Rejoice, on THE WILD SIDE!

Varèse Sarabande Records will celebrate composer Elmer Bernstein with the release ELMER BERNSTEIN: THE WILD SIDE available digitally and on CD December 9, 2014.  This special recording focuses on the jazz and big band scores from the acclaimed composer, from such films as THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, JOHNNY STACCATO, DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS, and WALK ON THE WILD SIDE.

“This is an album I have been dreaming about for years,” said producer Robert Townson.  He would first work with Bernstein in 1989 on MY LEFT FOOT.  “It was when we were in Scotland in 1997 to record some of Elmer’s older scores that we first started talking about an album that would present new recordings of his classic jazz film scores.”

The opportunity to celebrate Bernstein’s jazz side, however, wouldn’t happen until years later when Townson produced a concert of this material in Tenerife, Spain as part of the 2013 Fimucité festival.  The concert was performed by the Big Band de Canarias, was conducted by Kike Perdomo, and featured guest performers Esther Ovejero (vocals) and Sara Andon (flute).  Varèse Sarabande Records and producer Robert Townson brought this group together again in the studio this year to record this special celebration of Bernstein’s jazz works.

Through his almost 54 year career, Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) was an incredibly prolific film and television composer.  His work on 200-plus films would run the gamut from westerns to light hearted comedies, from smoky club jazz scores to Biblical classics.  His credits feature some of the most indelible melodies ever written for film including TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, GHOSTBUSTERS, MY LEFT FOOT, STRIPES, TRUE GRIT and THE GREAT ESCAPE.

“Bernstein's unconditional love of all styles and forms of music underscores how the man who composed much of the ballet music in Jerome Robbins' 1954 stage production of PETER PAN, starring Mary Martin, as well as the ballet music for the film OKLAHOMA, could, 30 years later, score the video of Michael Jackson's Thriller.” (ElmerBernstein.com).

“Elmer wrote a lot of jazz music,” explained Townson.  “Sometimes setting the majority of full scores in the idiom, as he did with THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (1955), WALK ON THE WILD SIDE (1962), and THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957). Sometimes only a few cues in an otherwise symphonic score — like SOME CAME RUNNING (1957) or THE CARETAKERS (1963) — would allow him to swing.”

Varèse Sarabande Records swings with Bernstein, presenting ELMER BERNSTEIN: THE WILD SIDE available digitally and on CD December 9, 2014.

MovieScore Media: The Last Belle [2014] - Stuart Hancock

MovieScore Media finds love (and great film scores) in the most unusual places - this time we release a digital EP by award-winning composer Stuart Hancock who once again proves that small films do not necessarily have small scores - in fact, a symphonic orchestral score can do wonders to fill the 2-D animated characters with life! Performed by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, The Last Belle is a rich, colourful and versatile score which gives you an emotional rollercoaster in just 14 minutes. The music follows the two parallel storylines, alternating between a hopeless romantic ("I’ve Got Myself a Date!", "Giddy Rosie", "Finding Love in London") and a carnivalesque rush which sounds like the most insane moments of Danny Elfman’s career ("Going Down the Tubes", "Rushing to Ripov’s" ). The score recently won the Gold Medal at the prestigious Park City Film Music Festival, Utah.

Composer Stuart Hancock is a returning guest to MovieScore Media. His previous credits with the label include Chee Keong Cheung’s action films Underground (2007) and Bodyguard: A New Beginning (2008), the football documentary One Night in Turin (2010) which memorably featured “Nessun Dorma” for its key moments and Hawk (2011), a film that spans an epic, choral score despite its 40-minute length. The composer’s most recent release with the label is The Desert Treasure (2013), a documentary on the natural treasures of Qatar. Stuart Hancock’s music can be heard every week on Season 2 of the hit BBC series Atlantis (starting on November 15, 2014).

The Last Belle is the writing/directing debut of animator Neil Boyle (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Space Jam). The film is a 20 minute animation extravaganza about two people going on a blind date. Rosie (Sienna Guillory) is there at the bar on time, impatiently waiting for her admirer. Wally in the meantime is recovering from a hangover and is on his way - but it seems the whole universe is conspiring against him. Will Rosie find true love? Will Wally be get there on time? You can find out in The Last Belle which can be viewed here!

It's a real treat as composer Stuart Hancock takes us on this beautiful trip... though short, it worth it. I found myself listening to it over and over... It never fails to amaze me where you have talent like Stuart Hancock, you find music.
