Milan Records: "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" Music by Carter Burwell


The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a six-part Western anthology film about the American frontier told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen. Each chapter tells a distinct story about the American West.

Starring a magnificent ensemble cast including Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Liam Neeson, legendary musician Tom Waits, Zoe Kazan and Bill Heck, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs features sharp-shooting songsters and jilted gold diggers to gothic traveling performers and ghostly carriage rides. The film premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival where it won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay. The film will premiere in select theaters and on Netflix November 16th, 2018.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs features an original score composed by frequent Coen Brothers collaborator and Academy Award nominee Carter Burwell (Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Anomalisa, Carol). His compositions serve as the perfect companion to these tales of violence and fortune in the Wild West, and rank amongst his finest works. In addition to the film's score, the soundtrack features the original song “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” written by Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings and performed by Willie Watson and Tim Blake Nelson. Milan Records will be releasing The Ballad of Buster Scruggs soundtrack on November 16th, the same day as the film's release. A cd version is out November 30th, and a vinyl release of the is set for December 21st, 2018.

Carter Burwell has composed the music for more than 80 feature films, including Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargoand most recently Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri for which he received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award nomination for his work. His theater work includes the chamber opera The Celestial Alphabet Event and the Mabou Mines productions Mother and Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day. Burwell’s dance compositions include the pieces The Return of Lot's Wife, choreographed by Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig, and RABL, choreographed by Patrice Regnier. He has performed around the world with his own ensembles as well as others, such as The Harmonic Choir.
