Magnolia Home Entertainment: WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD [BLU-RAY/DVD]

The film is set in 1988. Woodley stars as Kat, a college-bound teenager who is just discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality, when her mother (Green), a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, Kat barely registers her mother's absence and certainly doesn't blame her doormat of a father, Brock (Meloni), for the loss. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve's disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother's departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.

Overall a very good film, I have the complaint that the ending seemed rushed... up until a point it's a paced story of a young woman, family and her hormones. It get's to a slide and we are sent spiraling out of story control, though once you catch up... you will dig it. Also to mention we featured both the score and the soundtrack... which are both very good and helped move this film along. Magnet Releasing: HONEYMOON [BLU-RAY/DVD]

Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon, where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.

Treadaway (CONTROL) and Leslie (HBO’s GAME OF THRONES) give captivating leading performances as a couple that takes new love to disturbing depths. With romance slowing giving way to terror, writer/director Leigh Janiak puts her unique stamp on this intimate, chilling thriller.  

So I found it interesting, not too creepy... heard great things about the film for me it never got more than just good. It's one I think I would watch again, but in short... you don't really know someone until you marry them and then see the changes.

I just gotta say "Hell Yes"... period, okay... it could have gotten a little deeper into the subjects.

The Jessabelle Blu-ray and DVD, including audio commentary with the filmmakers, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes and an extended ending.Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident, Jessabelle comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return and clearly has no intention of letting her escape.

 

Two completely different films, but both effect the two young girls in a horrific nature... one chased around the town by a demonic-ish doll and the other by a murky past that keeps you guessing until the very end. Finders Keepers was one of those stories where if something weird happens in your new house, you move... do not investigate it. I felt it had some creeper moments, good cast and some mild gore... it just was like "just stop and leave it".

Jessabelle held my interest from the start it didn't hinder on too much of a set up, that story comes within time of her arriving at her wacky dad's home. You watch, you learn, you investigate... you find out who you are are meant to be it had a good story and felt good until the credits. Lakeshore Records will release the REACH ME –Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, digitally on January 6th and on CD March 10, 2015.  The album features original music composed by Tree Adams (CALIFORNICATION, SWELTER, RUN).

“The film features a large ensemble cast: you’ve got gangsters, bloggers, a priest, a rapper, an aspiring actor, an ex-con, a violent cop and a stuntman.  They’re lives have all been affected by this book that has been published anonymously.  Their stories all converge and eventually come to a boil in the end,” said Adams.  “Director John Herzfeld is a fan of traditional ensemble recording (which I love) and so there are virtually no samples or synths involved in this score.”

Intrada: The Last Starfighter [1984-2015] (Expanded) - Craig Safan

Craig Safan's score to the Warner Bros. and Universal Studios co-production The Last Starfighter (1984) remains the most popular and iconic of his numerous film scores. The late-Romantic symphonic approach was almost a prerequisite for genre scores in the '80s, and Safan met the challenge with a large-scale score for orchestra with electronics.  To distinguish himself from the other guys composing similar genre scores at the time, Safan turned for inspiration to the works of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957), whose lush symphonies and tone poems he found particularly beautiful. Safan also strove to distinguish himself through his integration  of electronics—chiefly, in his music for the film’s alien characters. The aggressive material for Xur and the Ko-Dan, for example, was accompanied by a bed of low synthesizers, doubled with tubas, low strings and contra bassoon. The centerpiece of Safan’s music, however, is his powerful and multifaceted main theme, kicking off with a lengthy, hard-driving fanfare for brass.

The soundtrack was originally released on LP and CD in 1984 on the Southern Cross label (a brief half-hour presentation), followed by a modest expansion on the Intrada label in 1995. Both previous editions were drawn from ¼˝ two-track mixes made for the composer at the conclusion of the 1984 scoring sessions. This new Intrada disc, featuring the premiere of the complete score, is the first release sourced from the multi-track masters, mixed directly from the 2˝ 24-track session elements and includes a wealth of previously unreleased music.

The film tells the story of Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), a teen who lives in a trailer court with his mother (Barbara Bosson) and kid brother (Chris Hebert). Dreaming of a seemingly unreachable life in the outside world, he finds solace in his sympathetic girlfriend, Maggie (Catherine Mary Stewart)—and in a peculiar arcade game titled Starfighter. When Alex breaks the high score and wins the game, he receives a visit from a mysterious stranger named Centauri (Robert Preston), who claims to have invented the machine. Centauri is, in fact, an alien bounty hunter, and the actual purpose of the game is to seek out potential Starfighters to face the real-life menace of the traitor Xur and the Ko-Dan alliance. Alex is spirited away to the distant world of Rylos, where he is mentored by Centauri and Grig (Dan O’Herlihy) a reptilian pilot, to join reluctantly in the battle for freedom.

Intrada: The Boy Who Could Fly [1986-2015] - Bruce Broughton

Intrada presents the premiere release of Bruce Broughton's emotional, soaring, and exciting score to the 1986 Lorimar film The Boy Who Could Fly.  The major theme for in the score is first evoked gently with harp, flute, guitar and strings, embracing the characters in a warm, romantic glow.  This theme follows the story closely -- taking us from darkness to heartbreak to adventure, all with a aching, bittersweet edge. “In a movie like Young Sherlock Holmes, there are six to eight themes running through it and they’re used over and over again because the story is so complex. But The Boy Who Could Fly has a very simple story about a kid who seems to be very simple, but has a rich interior life,” Broughton says. Like all fairy tales, The Boy Who Could Fly has darkness at its center and director Nick Castle was open about portraying the devastating hurt of losing a loved one.  Broughton carefully incorporated this, achieving a score that kept this pain either above or below the surface...but always there and delicately balanced.

At the time of the film, no soundtrack recording was released, although several months later Broughton rerecorded 34 minutes of the score with the Sinfonia of London for the Varese Sarabande label.  Truncating may of the cues and in some cases simplifying the orchestrations, it never quite caught the spirit and detail of the complete score recorded in LA.  This release includes the complete score, as well as the end title song by Stephen Bishop, "Walking on Air."  Additionally, bonus tracks include “Fireworks” (from To Catch a Thief), composed by Lyn Murray for the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock classic and newly recorded by Broughton for a television sequence as well as  the brief vocal “Back of the Bus” performed by the Coupe de Villes.

The Boy Who Could Fly begins as the Michaelson family tries for a fresh start in a new neighborhood.  Single mom Charlene (Bonnie Bedelia) has inherited her late husband’s insurance job, but struggles with new technologies. Eight-year-old Alex (Fred Savage) has one mission—to get around the block without being harassed by bullies. Meanwhile, fourteen-year-old Milly (Lucy Deakins), the anchor of the family, notices the teenage boy next door (Jay Underwood). He’s silent and seemingly emotionless, precariously balanced on his windowsill or roof. His arms are outstretched, as if waiting for a gust of wind to lift him away to a better place.  Thus begins Milly's mission to understand this mystery boy and uncover what is and isn't reality.

Varèse Sarabande: THE WOMAN IN BLACK: ANGEL OF DEATH [2015] - Marco Beltrami

Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE WOMAN IN BLACK: ANGEL OF DEATH – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on December 30 and on CD January 6, 2015. Marco Beltrami (THE HOMESMAN, SNOWPIERCER), who wrote the music for 2012’s THE WOMAN IN BLACK, composed the original music for this sequel.

“Musically, we built upon the score for The Woman in Black,” Beltrami explained. “I had the opportunity to collaborate with [composers] Brandon Roberts and Marcus Trumpp, who added a fresh take to the creative process.”

Relativity Media presents THE WOMAN IN BLACK: ANGEL OF DEATH, in theaters on January 2, 2015. THE WOMAN IN BLACK: ANGEL OF DEATH - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally on December 30 and on CD January 6, 2015.
