RLJE Films: "THE WATER MAN" [BLU-RAY/DVD]

RLJE Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, will release THE WATER MAN on DVD and Blu-ray on August 17th, 2021. RLJE Films will release THE WATER MAN on DVD and Blu-ray. The film had its World Premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

THE WATER MAN stars the ensemble cast of David Oyelowo (Selma), Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds), Lonnie Chavis (“This Is Us”), Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes), Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), and Maria Bello (“NCIS”). The film is the directorial debut of David Oyelowo and is based on the Black List script written by first time feature screenwriter Emma Needell. ShivHans Pictures, Harpo Films and Youba Saxon produced the film with Oyelowo, Carla Giardini, Shivani Rawat and Monica Levinson serving as producers along with executive producers Oprah Winfrey, Darren M Demetre, Connor Flanagan and Needell. 

In THE WATER MAN, Gunner (Lonnie Chavis) sets out on a quest to save his ill mother (Rosario Dawson) by searching for a mythic figure who possesses the secret to immortality, the Water Man. After enlisting the help of a mysterious local girl, Jo (Amiah Miller), they journey together into the remote Wild Horse forest -- but the deeper they venture, the stranger and more dangerous the forest becomes. Their only hope for rescue is Gunner’s father (David Oyelowo), who will stop at nothing to find them.

Lakeshore Records: "THE STAIRS" music by BC Smith

Lakeshore Records is set to release the soundtrack for The Stairs, the independent horror film released by Cinedigm.  The score by BC Smith (Smoke Signals, Skins), utilizes both acoustic and electronic instrumentation that subtly adds to the different characters and events in the film—a range that spans from idyllic to horrific.  The album will be available digitally August 13.  Cinedigm and Fathom Events will screen the film in theaters for one night only on August 12.

Back Lot Music: "STILLWATER" music by Mychael Danna

Back Lot Music has released the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of Focus Features’ thriller Stillwater directed by Academy Award® winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) and starring Academy Award® winner Matt Damon.  The Stillwater (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with an original score by Academy Award® winner Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) is available at all digital music platforms. Stillwater will be available at home on demand for a 48-hour rental period beginning Friday, August 20, 2021.
 
Stillwater follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.
 
Stillwater has a screenplay by Thomas Bidegain, Noé Debré, Tom McCarthy, Marcus Hinchey.  Matt Damon is joined by co-stars Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin and Camille Cottin.  Steve Golin, Tom McCarthy, Jonathan King, and Liza Chasin are producing.
 
McCarthy’s outsized artistic reputation and commitment to excellence helped draw composer Mychael Danna to the project.  Together, the pair discussed creating a score for the film that would enhance the emotional resonance of the narrative, while also speaking directly to the specifics of the transformative journey that Bill (played by Matt Damon) undergoes. “Tom and I worked hard to design a score that subtly envelops and submerges us, along with Bill, in –what is for him—an unknown, unfamiliar world,” Danna says.
 
Known for incorporating electronic elements into the scores he composes, Danna took a similar approach to Stillwater.  For the early U.S.-set scenes, guitars and drums predominate yet when Bill finds himself in Marseille, it’s traditional North African music – embellished with electronic sounds –that comes to the fore to mirror the vibrancy of the French city.  “The film is a sophisticated thriller in the provocative setting of a clash of cultures: conservative America and the very multicultural south of France,” Danna says.  “Virtually all the action occurs in Marseilles, but Bill begins the story very much imbedded in his own culture, that of a conservative Oklahoma oil rig worker, and brings that with him to Marseilles.  Soon, the very different sounds of a very different world begin to creep into his life and into the score,” continued Danna.
 
The emotional heart of the story, however, is reflected in the sounds of piano and a string orchestra (the orchestral portions of the score were recorded at London’s famed Abbey Road studios).  Yet the instrumentation never feels heavy-handed – rather Danna’s compositions remain very much in keeping with the understated, naturalistic feeling McCarthy evokes in Stillwater.  “As to be expected with Tom’s writing, the story has no easy resolution, no easy ending that can be defined as happy or sad,” Danna says.  “I feel that the score was able to convey this nuanced almost fable-like ending, which in my opinion is a quality of the very best films,” says Danna.
 
MYCHAEL DANNA is an Academy Award-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. His body of work includes his Oscar-winning score for Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” following his collaborations with Lee on “The Ice Storm” (1997) and “Ride with the Devil” (1999).   Danna also received the 2013 Golden Globe Award for “Life of Pi.”

His passion for presenting complex ideas in a musically accessible way began as Danna learned his craft at the University of Toronto. There, he was exposed to early and world music that later influenced his style. Danna earned the school’s inaugural Glenn Gould Composition Award in 1985 and also began scoring for student theatre groups, as he launched his artistic partnership with Canadian director Atom Egoyan.
 
His other celebrated collaborations include those with Bennett Miller on his multiple Oscar-nominee “Moneyball,” in 2011 and his Oscar-winning drama “Capote,” in 2005; with Terry Gilliam on his Oscar-nominated “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” in 2009 and “Tideland,” in 2005; with Mira Nair on “Vanity Fair,” in 2004, “Monsoon Wedding,” in 2001 and “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love,” in 1996; and with Billy Ray on “Breach,” in 2007 and “Shattered Glass,” in 2003. Danna’s credits also include the 2006 Oscar-winning “Little Miss Sunshine,” for which he shared a Grammy Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album; Marc Webb’s acclaimed romantic comedy “(500) Days of Summer” in 2009; and James Mangold’s 1999 Oscar-winning film “Girl, Interrupted.”
 
For television, Mychael won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) for “World Without End” (2013).  Mychael and Jeff Danna wrote the original music for the Margaret Atwood dramatization of “Alias Grace” for Netflix for which they were Emmy nominated in 2018.  In addition, Mychael was  Emmy nominated in 2018 for “The Last Tycoon” for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.  Mychael and Jeff Danna also wrote the music for the FX series “Tyrant,” which earned them Emmy nominations for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music in 2015. They were Emmy-nominated for “Camelot” in 2011.  

Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna wrote the score for Pixar’s animated feature “The Good Dinosaur” in 2015 and received an Annie nomination for their music.  Mychael scored the Oscar-nominated short preceding the film, “Sanjay’s Super Team.”  The Danna brothers continued their collaboration on the score for “Storks” for Warner Animation Group, and on the Oscar nominated animated film “The Breadwinner,” for which they were Annie nominated for their original score, and won the best original music award from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.  Mychael and Jeff Danna also scored the animated feature “The Addams Family” and Disney and Pixar’s Oscar nominated animated feature “Onward” which opened in theaters on March 6, 2020 and for which they received an Annie nomination for Best Music – Feature.

Among Mychael’s other awards are the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing (2013), the World Soundtrack Awards for Film Composer of the Year, and Best Score of the Year (both 2013), and the Hollywood Film Award for Composer of the Year (2016).

Redbird Music: "GOLD DUST" [EP] music by Jóhann Jóhannsson

Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (1969–2018) wrote music for a wide array of media, including theatre, dance, television, and films. His work is stylized by its blending of classical instrumentation with electronic elements.

Jóhann’s body of work contains previously unreleased music never used by the projects it was composed for - held in purgatory by the constraints of the capitalist industrial machine. Gold Dust, available now via Redbird Music, is a selection of meaningful fragments hatched in a suspended state of reality to provide an armor that can be dissolved only when those pieces trigger the senses. During his lifetime, Jóhann produced studio albums with Touch, 4AD, 130701, and Deutsche Grammophon, which released his last solo record, Orphée. His first solo album, Englabörn (2002, Touch), drew from a broad set of influences, ranging from Erik Satie, Bernard Herrmann, Purcell and Moondog to electronic music issued by labels such as Mille Plateaux and Mego.

A great deal of Jóhann’s work in his last years closely entwined with film: Sicario (2015), the score of which was nominated for all major awards, Arrival (2016), which earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and such notable film credits as James Marsh’s Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything (2014), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

Original Soundtrack Episode 2 digital album available on August 27, with subsequent weekly releases for each episode of the series.  The score was produced by Karpman and Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum and album producers are Brad Winderbaum, Bryan Andrews and Dave Jordan.

“What If...?” flips the script on the MCU, re-imagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. Directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, “What If...?” launched exclusively on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.

Commenting on her score, Karpman said, “I am so proud to be the composer of 'What If…?’  Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum and Bryan Andrews gave me the perfect composer playground, rooted in the Marvel experience and the freedom to explore outside of it! In episode one, I got to play with the traditional sound for Captain America and transform it. What a great experience!”

Hollywood Records: "FREE GUY" ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK AND "FREE GUY" ORIGINAL SCORE ALBUM BY COMPOSER CHRISTOPHE BECK

The Free Guy Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Free Guy Original Score album are available today.  With songs featured by Mariah Carey, Fred Astaire, Digital Underground, Mama Cass and more, the Free Guy soundtrack offers an eclectic mix of some of pop music’s greatest moments.   The soundtrack also includes 4 score tracks by Emmy®-nominated composer Christophe Beck (“WandaVision,” “Frozen 2,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp”).   The Free Guy Original Motion Picture Soundtrack vinyl album will be released on August 13.   Listen to the Free Guy playlist here.  “Free Guy” opens August 13, 2021, only in theaters.

Commenting on his score for “Free Guy,” Beck said, “I jumped at the chance to work with Shawn Levy again; he is so energetic and a wonderful collaborator. The first feature we worked on together was “Big Fat Liar,” and we have worked together on several projects since.”

Beck continued, “In crafting the sound of “Free Guy” Shawn and I decided that the score’s primary role would be to focus on Ryan Reynolds’ character Guy, and his journey. At the start of the film, Guy is getting ready for the day to work at a bank which is repeatedly held up. He doesn’t realize he’s a background character in a video game. He’s very childlike, and the music functions to underscore his attitude to life, with bucolic, up-tempo sounds, to convey his sense of hopefulness and a naïve love of life. That music repeats, and then evolves to reflect his changes in outlook and circumstances, and his gradual awakening to knowing there’s more to life than being held up 12 times a day.”

On crafting the love theme Beck added, “The use of electronics in the score is a nod to the fact we are inside a video game. As Guy awakens to this other reality, the musical themes get bigger, the orchestra expands, and the music gets more dramatic.  The catalyst for Guy’s awakening is his relationship with Jodie Comer’s character Millie. Shawn and I knew we needed a love theme.  The electronic score elements transcend when violins come in and it becomes a sweeping love theme in the grand tradition of cinematic love themes; as that relationship develops, so too does that theme grow and blossom.”

In Twentieth Century Studios’ epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late. Intrada: "THE EIGER SANCTION" (2CD) music by John Williams

Intrada's latest release features a 2-CD set of John Williams' music for the 1975 Universal Pictures thriller The Eiger Sanction. The score is a masterful example of the composer’s 1970s style, encompassing orchestral and jazz elements, tonal and atonal moments, and memorable themes. From the foreboding theme of the main title to the thrilling action of "The Car Chase" and the majestic "The Top Of The World," the score is a showcase of a composer who was rapidly rising to the top of the industry's game.

The first disc features his complete 75-minute score, offering substantially more music than was represented on the MCA LP, a re-recording that also included tracks often substantially reworked by Williams. While the original scoring sessions were in three-track split-mono, ace producer Mike Matessino has mixed the tracks into a satisfying stereo experience, similar to his prior work on Williams' Earthquake. For the MCA album, Universal Music Group unearthed the original 2″ unmixed multi-track tapes, not only allowing for a state of the art new mix to showcase more detail than ever heard before, but also revealing several additional tracks Williams recorded for the album but which were not ultimately included on the LP release.

In The Eiger Sanction, university professor, art collector and former assassin Jonathan Hemlock (Clint Eastwood) is called out of retirement to perform a “sanction" (“killing") in Zurich, in return for $20,000 and a letter indemnifying him from tax troubles. En route home, he meets a stewardess who promptly seduces him and steals his money. It turns out she’s been sent to convince him to undertake a second assassination during a perilous climb of the Eiger. Hemlock flies to Arizona to get back into shape for the dangerous climb. He reunites with old friend Ben Bowman (George Kennedy); Bowman introduces him to a Native American trainer, who puts Hemlock through his paces. Once in Switzerland, Hemlock and Bowman join three other members of the climbing team. One of Hemlock’s fellow climbers is the target, but he cannot ascertain which before they leave to attempt climbing the north face of the Eiger. Falling rocks kill one and the other two fall to their deaths, leaving Hemlock the sole survivor—and only then does he discover the real killer’s identity.

Intrada: "BLACK PATCH/THE MAN" [Kickstarter] Music Composed by Jerry Goldsmith, To be conducted by WILLIAM T. STROMBERG. To be performed by the ROYAL SCOTTISH NATIONAL ORCHESTRA

Intrada follows its earlier Kickstarter campaign for Dial M for Murder with a proposal to record two Jerry Goldsmith scores. Due to his popularity, nearly every film score Goldsmith composed has been released in some form. But at least two works remain unreleased for the simple reason that the original recordings are missing. One is his first theatrical film, the western Black Patch from 1957. The second is The Man from 1972, about America’s first black president. These are noticeable gaps in his discography and the only way to fill those gaps is through new recordings of the scores.

Leigh Phillips is reconstructing both—Black Patch from Jerry Goldsmith’s own surviving score and The Man from the film print. Leigh was essential in our presentation of Jerry Goldsmith’s 1977 score for Damnation Alley, having re-performed the missing electronic overlays that allowed us to present the entire score back in 2017.

William T. Stromberg, veteran of numerous classic film score recordings for both the Marco Polo label and his own Tribute Film Classics label, follows up on his magnificent and authentic interpretation of Dimitri Tiomkin’s Dial M For Murder score by again stepping up to the podium and leading the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in this splendid new performance of two Jerry Goldsmith film scores from Intrada!

Milan Records today announces the August 13 release of BECKETT (MUSIC FROM THE NETFLIX FILM) by Academy Award®-, Golden Globe®- and GRAMMY®-Award winning composer and musician RYUICHI SAKAMOTO. Available for pre-order now, the album features score music written by Sakamoto for the upcoming thriller directed by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino and produced by Luca Guadagnino. Beckett made its world premiere at the 74th Locarno Film Festival this week and will debut exclusively on Netflix on Friday, August 13.

Forced to run for his life and desperate to get across the country to the American embassy to clear his name, tensions escalate as the authorities close in, political unrest mounts, and Beckett falls even deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy.

Lakeshore Records: "El Cid" Seasons 1 and 1 music by Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe and BAFTA winner Gustavo Santaolalla and Oscar and Grammy-nominated Alfonso G. Aguilar

Lakeshore Records releases El Cid—Music from the Amazon Original Series digitally today, August 6. The score by Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe and BAFTA winner Gustavo Santaolalla and Oscar and Grammy-nominated Alfonso G. Aguilar is richly orchestrated with medieval instrumentation and vocalizations that provide an epic backdrop to the first and second seasons of the Amazon Original series.  El Cid Season Two debuted exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world on July 15.  This is the first of two albums—the second is an album of original music by Santaolalla which will be released in September.
 
El Cid tells the story of Rodrigo “Ruy” Diaz de Vivar [AKA “El Cid”], a national hero of Spain, but also one of the most mysterious and complex characters in the country’s history. The series explores Ruy’s younger years when he becomes a faithful vassal, knight and hero for the crown. The story takes place in the eleventh century, one of the most fascinating periods in Spanish history, where Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together in the Iberian Peninsula, facing wars and forging alliances. El Cid is a story of love, intrigue, betrayal and the struggle between those with power and authority.
 
Says Santaolalla: "It was a great experience working the talented Spanish composer and arranger Alfonso Aguilar and seeing how he turned my themes into this beautiful score.”

ABOUT GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA
The renowned and talented musician, composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla has developed an extensive and successful career. Born on August 19, 1951 and a native of El Palomar, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Santaolalla began taking guitar lessons at age five. In his youth he was part of the massively recognized band, Arco Iris. Since its inception, the identity issue has been one of the main axes of Santaolalla’s artistic vision. During those years Argentina was victim of a violent coup and a bloody military dictatorship. In 1978 Santaolalla decides to settle in Los Angeles. He forms the group Wet Picnic with Aníbal Kerpel, a musician and engineer with who he continues working to this day. The theme "Cocktailed Sky" was one of the first short musicals to be transmitted by the test signal of the emerging MTV. In 1984, with the newly established Argentine democracy, he returns there to perform "De Ushuaia a la Quiaca" a project that brings him together to his soul mate with who he travels all across the country.

Santaolalla's work with artists like Café Tacvba, Maldita Vecindad, Julieta Venegas, Divididos, Los Prisioneros, etc. establishes him as one of the fundamental pillars of the history of the movement known as Rock en Español.

Years later, together with Aníbal Kerpel and Adrian Sosa (musician and producer), he creates his own record label called Surco, and manages to establish the careers of artists such as Molotov, Juanes, Bersuit, La Vela Puerca, El Peyote Asesino, Arbol, Bajofondo, etc. Between 2000 and 2017 Santaolalla is awarded 16 Latin Grammys and 2 Grammys for his work as a producer, songwriter and artist.

He founds and integrates, Bajofondo, together with Juan Campodonico (musician and producer), and participates in widely recognized festivals around the world such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Roskilde and prestigious venues such as the Disney Hall in Los Angeles, the Lincoln Center in New York, the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen among many others.

In 2005 he produces a series of albums, book and film entitled "Café de los Maestros," in which he brings together the greatest exponents of the golden age of tango of the 1940's and 1950's.

At the same time throughout his career, he launches several solo albums. "Santaolalla" (1981),  "GAS" (1995),  "Ronroco" (1994),  "Camino" (2014), "Qhapaq nan" (2015) and “Raconto” (2017). The beginnings of Santaolalla as a music composer for films occur in the year 2000. He forges a lasting friendship and an artistic partnership with director, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, for who he composes the original score for his films “Amores Perros”, ”21 Grams”, “Babel” and “Biutiful”. Later, films such as “The Motorcycle Diaries” by Walter Salles open a path of immense recognition in the film industry, and in 2007, Santaolalla becomes the third composer in history to win two Oscar awards consecutively, for the Ang Lee film “Brokeback Mountain" in 2006, and Iñarritu for "Babel" in 2007.

Meanwhile, Gustavo creates a publishing company called RETINA, through which he publishes collection books of several prominent photographers like Gaby Messina, Gustavo di Mario, Diego Levy, Nora Lezano, Alejandra Palacios, etc. The books "Sangre" and "Potrero" were also given international awards in the book fair in Madrid, Spain.

In 2013, and for the first time in his career, Santaolalla created the music for a video game. The Last of Us, with more than 200 awards, including game of the year, becomes one of the most successful video games in history. Santaolalla was again invited by Neil Druckmann to work on the follow-up video game and the much-anticipated The Last of Us II, released in June 2020.

In 2013 the album "Presente" was released, leading Bajofondo to an extensive world tour of the band.

In 2014, Santaolalla makes the music for the successful and award-winning film “The Book of Life.” Not only composing incidental music, but also writing original songs with the iconic Paul Williams.

2015 finds Santaolalla getting the Platino Award for his work in the acclaimed Damian Szifron’s film “Relatos Salvajes”.

Also that same year he produced and hosted “Qhapq ñan, desandando el camino” a four-part TV documentary released in Argentina. His work in North American television in this period includes his original music for shows such as the popular “Jane the Virgin” and the controversial “Making of a Murderer.” Starting in 2018, Santaolalla began working on the musical score for Narcos: Mexico Season 1, Season 2 and is currently working on Season 3.

In 2019, Santaolalla produced the music for the Los Tigres del Norte Netflix Original documentary & live album, Los Tigres del Norte at Folsom Prison, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s live album at Folsom and includes a Spanish version of “Folsom Prison Blues”. It was followed by the release of Café Tacvba’s second MTV Unplugged celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band.

Recently, Santaolalla was invited by Eric Clapton to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival alongside artists such as Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Peter Frampton, Vince Gill, John Mayer and Clapton, himself.

Having wrapped up the score for Miguel Sapochnick’s upcoming feature film, BIOS starring Tom Hanks in the first half of 2020, Santaolalla is currently working on the animation series Maya and the Three (Netflix), the Spanish television mini-series El Cid (Amazon Prime Video), and Freak Power: The Ballot of the Bomb, a documentary inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s run for sheriff of Pitkin County.

Rompan todo: La historia del rock en América Latina, a Netflix series documenting the history of rock and roll music in Latin America against the political and cultural backdrop of the region, directed by Picky Talarico and executively produced by Nico Entel (Sins of my Father) and Santaolalla was released mid-December 2020.

Alfonso G. Aguilar is a Spanish film composer, music producer, pianist, and creative entrepreneur. He was born and raised in Madrid where he studied music before honing his craft at the Berklee College of Music.

Alfonso won the World Soundtrack Award’s Public Choice Award for his score to the Oscar-nominated film Klaus, Netflix’s first original animated feature film directed by Sergio Pablos (Despicable Me) and starring the voice talents of Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, Joan Cusack, and J.K. Simmons. In addition to being Oscar nominated for Best Animated Feature, Klaus won the BAFTA award for Best Animated Feature Film, won 7 Annie Awards including Best Animated Feature, and received 2 Goya Award Nominations including for Best Animated Film.

Lakeshore Records: "COLETTE" music by Nami Melumad

As a young girl, Colette Marin-Catherine fought the Nazis as a member of the French Resistance. Since 1945, she has refused to set foot in Germany. That changes when a history student named Lucie enters her life and encourages her to visit the concentration camp where the Nazis killed her brother.
 
Colette, the Academy Award ® Winning Film (“Best Documentary Short Subject 2021) directed by Anthony Giacchino, was co-produced by Electronic Arts’ Respawn Entertainment and Facebook Oculus Studios and distributed by The Guardian where it is streaming worldwide.  The documentary is featured in Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. This is the first Oscar-winning documentary produced by a gaming company and distributed by a news organization.
 
Notes Melumad on the making of the score and her personal connection to the work:
 
“In a documentary like this, which is already relatively heavy on emotion, the score needs to support the story without being overdramatic. My approach was to go sparse and only score the moments that could truly benefit from the emotional impact of music. Whenever possible, I tried to sonically blend with the sound of the film itself. For example, in the tunnel scene, a bass drum rumble sneaks in Colette and Lucie enter the darkness, and it's almost like a horror scene once we're inside. The visuals of the monstrous V-2 carcasses are so shocking that you can almost feel the heaviness of this scary metal and the screams this tunnel has heard. The score here focuses on the two extreme ranges- the high (dissonant strings), and the low (harp and piano strikes, basses), so the one can really feel the emptiness of the middle... this allows the viewer to experience the true heaviness of this moment without going melodramatic.
 
I was so honored to be part of this project. My great-grandma, Gertrud Pollack-Simons was murdered by the Nazis along with many other family members, so this film about resistance and remembrance hits close to home. “

Nami Melumad is an Israeli-Dutch film composer, based in Los Angeles, California. Her scoring credits include over 130 projects in a wide range of genres, most notably the HBO Max comedy An American Pickle starring Seth Rogen, the Amazon thriller-drama series Absentia with Stana Katic, and EA's VR video game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. Nami recently scored the Oscar-winning documentary short, Colette, and contributed music and arrangements to Amazon’s hit, Borat Subsequent MovieFilm. Her score to the Emmy-nominated Star Trek episode, Shorts Treks: Q&A in, landed her the upcoming series Star Trek: Prodigy, making her the first female composer for the franchise.

Nominated for Breakthrough Composer of the Year (2020) by the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA), Nami won the IFMCA For Best Original Score for a Video Game for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, earned a Jerry Goldsmith Award Nomination for Over the Wall (2019), won the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for her work for Passage (2018), as well as Best Score for a Short at Fimucite for Luminarias (2017). She was also nominated for an HMMA for Miss Arizona (2018) and This Day Forward (2017). Her works have been performed by the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, Haifa Symphony Orchestra, The Israel Sinfonietta Beer Sheva and Helix Collective Ensemble. KeepMoving Records: RELEASES SIX CD'S in AUGUST!!

“Hypnosis / Odessa” Original Motion Picture Score

KeepMoving Records announces two scores on one CD by Anna Drubich, a Russian-born composer often working on the projects of Marco Beltrami (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Fear Street).

The soundtrack features two collaborations with writer/director Valeriy Todorovskiy. The first one is the movie Hypnosis, which tells the story of a teenager Misha (Sergey Giro) who receives hypnotic treatment for sleepwalking, but eventually he becomes so dependent on the therapy that he is no longer able to distinguish reality from illusion. The score’s idea of blending the border between reality and dreamscapes is a beautiful motive that disintegrates as the story progresses.

The second score is Odessa, a family dramedy based on Todorovskiy’s own personal memories about getting stuck in the Russian city in the midst of a cholera outbreak. The score has two main themes: the Childhood Theme – which supposed to be a stark memory from the childhood that stays with you all entire life – and then the second main theme of the film would be the Family/Destiny Theme which is about taking responsibilities for your doings and wishes.”

The limited-edition CD comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the films and the scores based on an original interview with the composer.

“Battalion” Original Motion Picture Score

KeepMoving Records announces the CD release of Yuri Poteyenko’s for the WWI drama Battalion as well as additional music for the WWII tank battle movie White Tiger.

The film tells the true story of a battalion of enthusiastic women volunteers who must fight in World War I as the fatigue of male troops is found demoralizing after the February Revolution. While the all-female Battalion lead by Maria Bochkareva is seen as nothing but a crazy idea at first, the female soldiers prove themselves on the front where shifting alliances and the tumultuous political situation truly test their limits. As a unique women-in-war movie, Poteyenko gets the chance to not only score battlefield action but also dig down deep enough for the emotional core of the movie.

The CD also includes additional music from White Tiger, a 2012 tank battle movie directed by Karen Shahnazarov. Poteyenko contributed only two cues for the picture. In this case, the composer was specifically asked to incorporate the music of Richard Wagner into the two cues with both “Tank Attack” and “End of the War” featuring elements of the “Tannhäuser Overture” in the midst of massive action scoring.

The limited-edition CD comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film based on commentary by the composer himself.

 

“Frontier” Original Motion Picture Score

KeepMoving Records announces the CD release of Yuri Poteyenko’s for the time-hopping action thriller Frontier.

The film tells the story of young and disillusioned businessman Mikhail Shurov doesn’t get to access his dream property, a sandy quarry at the Nevsky Piglet as archaeological work needs to be done on the site. Confused about why the events of the past should undermine the investments of the future, Mikhail’s outlook changes when the removal of a mysterious object from the excavations lands him in the past, on the tragically famous Nevsky Piglet during the Great Patriotic War.

In this project, one of Poteyenko’s biggest challenges was finding the right balance between contemporary and the old school way of film scoring as the storyline jumps between two different time periods with different visual styles. The time-hopping aspect of the story is achieved through clever changes in approaches to the two timeframes, a crescendo that represents the time jumps and a balance of electronics for battle scenes that take place in two worlds.

The limited-edition CD comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film based on commentary by the composer himself.

“The Last Frontier” Original Motion Picture Score

KeepMoving Records announces the CD release of Yuri Poteyenko’s WWII drama score for The Last Frontier.

The Last Frontier tells the story of the Podolsk cadets who defended Moscow in October 1941 and were one of the first victims of the German attack.  The suicide mission was expected to buy five to seven days for relocating the military reserves. Within a week, only about 1000 cadets were still alive, while some sources claim only a tenth of the regiment survived.

The score performs a careful balancing act between rousing action music (Jerry Goldsmith’s The Blue Max might come to mind) whereas it also has a handful of emotional highlights as it focuses on the story of the cadets and the girls they left behind. A soprano voice emerging from an all-male choir (the famous Alexandrov Ensemble of the Russian Army) highlights a spiritual connection between soldiers of past and present.

The limited-edition CD comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film based on commentary by the composer himself.

“Devyatayev” Original Motion Picture Score

KeepMoving Records announces the CD release of Yuri Poteyenko’s score for the shocking true story of Devyatayev.

Devyatayev was a war hero of the Soviet Union, a fighter pilot who got captured and held hostage on the island of Peenemünde, the place where the Nazis conducted their secret rocket experiments. After a daring escape where he flew away by a German plane, Devyatayev provided important information for the Soviet rocket program based on his experiences. His story however was found unbelievable and he was labelled a traitor until the value of his reports proved to be undeniable.

Reuniting with director Timur Bekmambetov (Nightwatch, Daywatch), Yuri Poteyenko wrote one of his most contemporary sounding scores with a strong anchor to the past. The main theme of the movie is “Beloved Town”, a hit movie theme song from the 1939 film The Fighters, which itself was a pre-war Soviet drama about cocky fighter pilots. The connection between old and new film music traditions creates a compelling underscore that connects 80 years of history together.

“Alaska Kid” Original Music From The Television Series

KeepMoving Records announces the CD release of John Cameron’s score for Alaska Kid, a Russian co-production inspired by the works of Jack London.

Helmed by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Hill, the German/Polish/Russian co-production of Alaska Kid arrived on the scene right in the middle of the Jack London Renaissance marked by movies like White Fang and Balto. The 13-episode series starred Mark Pillow (Nuclear Man from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace) and Donovan Scott (Leslie Barbara from Police Academy) as two men trying their luck in the Alaskan wilderness. Although not based on one particular Jack London book, the series focused on the milieu established by White Fang or The Call of the Wild.

The rousing score by John Cameron had the benefit of using around 70 live musicians (a rarity for a ’90s TV show). Although it was made for the small screen, the music for Alaska Kid has all the sweep and thematic richness of any contemporary adventure score with Russian musicians providing the basis – while a few additions were produced back in England. The end result is an adventure score you didn’t know you needed in your life – for Alaska Kid turned out to be quite an obscure show.

The limited-edition CD comes with liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the films and John Cameron adding his own unique insight and memories into being a pioneering Western composer working in Moscow.

Silva Screen Records' Re:Scored series and a follow up to Re:Scored Epic Classical. The Re:Scored series introduces fresh, thoughtful and contemporary film score reworkings of established genres. On Epic Classical Vol. 2, composer Antonin Roux re-arranges classical favorites in “epic” film score mode. Bach’s Cello Suite no. 1 in G major, Strauss’s The Blue Danube Waltz and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March in D Major feature award-winning singer Merethe Soltvedt.

The 10 classical compositions chosen for re:scoring are ingrained in popular culture and have appeared in many movies, from drama and animation to Sci-Fi and comedy. Here, the big expansive sound is always a shortcut for an epic win or lose, strength or weakness, purgative or transformational moment in the story; the distinct phrases and harmonies have now become a shortcut for turmoil, end and new beginnings.

Throughout the history of film making, iconic sequences were created by syncing classical music to picture; such as Debussy’s Claire De Lune as part of the Bellagio Resort's fountain show in Ocean’s Eleven, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries played at full volume in the Apocalypse Now helicopter invasion scene and Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz op.314 adopted in Kubrik's 2001: A Space Odyssey as a recurring theme, giving the movie a timeless and hypnotic quality.

Merethe Soltvedt's rich vocals can be heard on Interstellar, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men and Ready Player One. Merethe is also a performing and collaborative artist. Notably, Merethe sang with a full orchestra and choir at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as with Norwegian rock stars and international artists across Europe, in New York and LA.

Antonin Roux is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and film composer based in France.

Silva Screen Records: "Professor T" music by Hannes De Maeyer

Silva Screen Records will digitally release Professor T, the original soundtrack for Britbox / ITV drama, composed by Belgian Award-winning composer Hannes De Maeyer. The TV soundtrack for the original Belgian series was also composed by De Maeyer.

The executive producer for the ITV’s re-imagining of the Belgian drama is Walter Iuzzolino of C4’s Walter Presents. The series premiered in the UK in June on BritBox before its 18th July debut on ITV. It is also currently being aired in the USA on PBS. The original Belgian series ran from 2015 on C4 with series 3 currently available to stream.

Described by The Guardian as having “an abundance of imagination and characterization”, the show follows Professor Jasper Tempest a genius Cambridge University criminologist with OCD and an overbearing mother, as he advises police. The show stars Death in Paradise‘s Ben Miller, Frances de la Tour and Juliet Aubrey.

Hannes De Maeyer (Gangsta, The Racer, Torpedo, Rafaël, Black) is one of Belgium's most versatile composers, best known for his collaboration with director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on Gangsta and Black. His scores range from pure electronic to impressive symphonic instrumentation. The Cine Journal comments on De Maeyer’s work: “Belgian composer Hannes De Maeyer is hands down one of Europe’s most versatile composers. One need look no further than his gorgeous soundtrack for the Belgian war drama ‘Torpedo’, which summons the flair of old Hollywood war scores; or ’Gangsta’, a thriller imbued in 80s nostalgia with its old-school electronic sonic world; or the tense soundscape he crafted for the Amsterdam-set crime series, ‘Women of the Night’.” Review Graveyard gives the score for Torpedo 10/10 - “De Maeyer delivers an epic score, packed with original themes, that will send shivers down your spine.”

In Professor T, De Maeyer introduces a beautiful main theme with a pulse and purpose, and variations of it can be heard throughout the score, supporting the characters and giving scenes greater layers and depth. Though versatile, De Maeyer is primarily a thematic composer with talent for melody, character and orchestration.

The single Morning Routines, taken from the album Professor T will be released on August 6, 2021.
