Sumthing Else Music Works today announced the worldwide digital release of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Original Soundtrack featuring the original score from the breathtakingly atmospheric first-person mystery game focused on exploration and discovery. Created by jazz and classically-trained Polish composer Mikolai Stroinski (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Dark Souls 2 trailer), the game's evocative music soundtrack will be available digitally from Sumthing.com, iTunes, Amazon and other digital music sites on January 27.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter soundtrack has garnered numerous accolades for its immersive and ethereal emotional quality including nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition at the 18th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and Best Audio at the 15th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards.

Describing his process for finding the musical voice for Ethan Carter, Mikolai Stroinski explains, "I'm a pianist. Through improvisation I was trying to come up with a central theme that would capture the story of Ethan Carter. I was planning on orchestrating it once approved. As it turned out, The Astronauts loved it so much they didn't want to add anything. And so it stayed. If you listen closely to the melodic pieces from the score, you will notice that each one is a variation of 'Ethan's Theme'. It borrows either the melodic shape, or the rhythms or the distinguishing melodic intervals."

Developed by Polish indie game development studio The Astronauts, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a "weird fiction" horror focused on atmosphere, mood and the essential humanity of its characters. With its mixture of a beautiful world with the haunting and macabre, the game is catered to immersive storytelling for adult players.

You play as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan's home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.

Experience in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye and horror fiction inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabiński, and H. Intrada: The River Wild [2Cd] - Jerry Goldsmith and Maurice Jarre

The 1994 Universal Pictures film The River Wild  features Gail (Meryl Streep) in a troubled marriage and on a family outing to go rafting in the country to get away from it all.  Along the way they meet a pair of thieves who hijack a ride on the raft, turning a family bonding adventure into a family survival ordeal. The decision as to just what music would be heard was a challenging issue for the filmmakers.  Composer Maurice Jarre was hired to record a lengthy, large-scale symphonic score in June 1994.  The score is on a massive, epic scale, focusing on the grand outdoor adventure -- the majesty of nature itself -- and later the thrills as the tale progressively gets darker.  The action material speaks to the conflict between that natural power and Gail’s determination to conquer it.  This approach apparently did not work for the filmmakers.

Jerry Goldsmith was then brought in and recorded a score in August, taking a much gentler approach, featuring a main theme that speaks to the serenity Gail finds in nature and her enjoyment in navigating its waters. This transparent theme is typically heard on solo flute or trumpet and is based on the folksong, “The Water Is Wide.”  Where Jarre avoids using that familiar tune until the end of his score, Goldsmith anchors his entire score with it. Where Jarre works variants of his original main theme to focus on the action and hits hard with dissonant brass figures, Goldsmith moves away from the traditional melody he started with and instead creates an entirely new secondary theme for the river rafting sequences, an imposing minor-key idea that assumes prominence as the action unfolds. For the action sequences, Goldsmith opts for rhythmic intensity over dissonance.

And yet for the lengthy action set-piece where Gail successfully negotiates the deadly gauntlet as well as the equally lethal villains, both composers feature a plethora of energetic, jagged brass rhythms over massive blocks of percussion.  Ultimately, both scores are musically riveting and worthy of the showcase Intrada presents on this 2-CD set. This new release features the complete scores from the masters housed at Universal that not only include the complete scores, but the numerous rewrites for both scores as the filmmakers honed in on the approach for which they were looking.

Intrada: THE JOURNEY INSIDE [1994-2015 - DAVID SHIRE

For the 1994 IMAX film The Journey Inside, the filmmakers knew they wanted a big, theme-driven sci-fi score —and when the composer of Return to Oz was available and interested, they were thrilled. Oz was packed with memorable character themes, motifs and sumptuous orchestration; it is now considered a classic and a high point in Shire’s career.  And that's what they wanted for The Journey Inside. "We were agreed that it needed a good meat-and-potatoes, sci-fi, symphonic score,” said Shire.  This is apparent right away in the main title, which establishes the film’s main melody -- a “hero” theme for the young boy. Rushed along on rippling strings and woodwinds, a French horn sings the tune—filled with optimism, adventure and wonder— Shire opens the saga with grand ambitions and gives the whole orchestra a workout, establishing the musical character to follow.

The 80-piece orchestra was blended with a few “spacey” synth voices (with names like “alien metal,” “computer piano” and “space chorus”), and recorded on September 9 and 10, 1993, at the old MGM scoring stage under the watch of veteran engineer Dan Wallin. “The score sounded just magnificent,” said Shire. “It was thrilling to have an orchestra that large.”

The Journey Inside tells of an alien race who come to earth to harvest its food supply, but see a threat in the humans’ development of a computer chip that will allow them to “cross the critical threshold” and travel to the stars. After landing on earth, the squid-like aliens “juxtaport” from their cavernous meeting place to the Intel factory in an attempt to sabotage the production of Intel’s new “Project 5” (Pentium) chip. Fortunately for the human race, a young boy named Jimmy (Tim Farrell) witnessed the aliens’ landing and overheard their secret plans, and rushes to the laboratory just in time to stop their evil plot.

Cinedigm And Wizard World’s New Network To Launch This February With Fan-Favorite Film, TV And Original Entertainment Geared Towards the Comic Con Community

The forthcoming digital streaming service CONtv has announced it will be kicking off production for a new original series, “LAST FAN STANDING,” a game show hosted and produced by fan-favorite actor  Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead, Army Of Darkness). Created in partnership with Pop Quiz Entertainment, the series will be filmed live on the ground at Wizard World Comic Con conventions nationwide with the first show taping on Saturday, January 10 at New Orleans Comic Con. “LAST FAN STANDING”engages event attendees through a proprietary audience response system, where all patrons play along, competing for cash and prizes. Nonesuch Records: Two Original Songs Written and Performed by Ethan Hawke from Richard Linklater’s Golden Globe-winning Boyhood

 

Boyhood has just won three Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture—Drama; Best Director—Motion Picture (Richard Linklater); and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Patricia Arquette). Nonesuch Records released the soundtrack to the film—which was written, directed, and co-produced by Linklater—last year. And now the label digitally releases two additional songs written specifically for the movie by Ethan Hawke—“Split the Difference (Daddy’s Lullaby),” performed by Hawke and Charlie Sexton, and “Ryan’s Song,” performed by Hawke with Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater, and Jennifer Tooley. One of Daniel Day Lewis' greatest pieces of acting work, I don't need to go into too much detail, it's available in BLU-RAY... if you must have, you must have it. It's an awful cover, not sure what they were thinking when whomever designed it.

Magnolia Home Entertainment: WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD [BLU-RAY/DVD]

The film is set in 1988. Woodley stars as Kat, a college-bound teenager who is just discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality, when her mother (Green), a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, Kat barely registers her mother's absence and certainly doesn't blame her doormat of a father, Brock (Meloni), for the loss. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve's disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother's departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.

Overall a very good film, I have the complaint that the ending seemed rushed... up until a point it's a paced story of a young woman, family and her hormones. It get's to a slide and we are sent spiraling out of story control, though once you catch up... you will dig it. Also to mention we featured both the score and the soundtrack... which are both very good and helped move this film along. Magnet Releasing: HONEYMOON [BLU-RAY/DVD]

Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon, where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.

Treadaway (CONTROL) and Leslie (HBO’s GAME OF THRONES) give captivating leading performances as a couple that takes new love to disturbing depths. With romance slowing giving way to terror, writer/director Leigh Janiak puts her unique stamp on this intimate, chilling thriller.  

So I found it interesting, not too creepy... heard great things about the film for me it never got more than just good. It's one I think I would watch again, but in short... you don't really know someone until you marry them and then see the changes.

Lionsgate: REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS [BLU-RAY/DVD]

I just gotta say "Hell Yes"... period, okay... it could have gotten a little deeper into the subjects.

It's a race against evil as Jaime Pressly (TV’s “My Name is Earl”) tries to save her daughter from an evil doll bent on taking over her soul in Finders Keepers, arriving on DVD (plus Digital), Digital HD and On Demand January 6th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The haunting, supernatural thriller, directed by Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter), written by Robert Ben Garant (Hell Baby, Night at the Museum) and starring Sarah Snook, Mark Webber and Joelle Carter, will arrive on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD), DVD (plus Digital) and Digital HD on January 13, 2015 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The Jessabelle Blu-ray and DVD, including audio commentary with the filmmakers, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes and an extended ending.Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident, Jessabelle comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return and clearly has no intention of letting her escape.

 

Two completely different films, but both effect the two young girls in a horrific nature... one chased around the town by a demonic-ish doll and the other by a murky past that keeps you guessing until the very end. Finders Keepers was one of those stories where if something weird happens in your new house, you move... do not investigate it. I felt it had some creeper moments, good cast and some mild gore... it just was like "just stop and leave it".

Jessabelle held my interest from the start it didn't hinder on too much of a set up, that story comes within time of her arriving at her wacky dad's home. You watch, you learn, you investigate... you find out who you are are meant to be it had a good story and felt good until the credits.
