Varèse Sarabande: FLESH AND BONE [2015] - Dave Porter

Varèse Sarabande will release the FLESH AND BONE – Original Television Soundtrack digitally on December 11 and on CD January 15, 2016. The album features original music by composer Dave Porter (BREAKING BAD, THE BLACKLIST).

“Moira challenged me to be more overtly emotional than I usually am,” Porter said. Moira Walley-Beckett, the series’ creator and Executive Producer, challenged him “to use the score as a powerful force to enhance the stakes of the drama, but always encouraged me to find my own way of expressing it.”  On a series with a background of ballet, Porter felt the score should feature classical orchestral instruments, but in order to distinguish it from the more traditional ballet music around it he chose a more modern direction. At times it was spare, and at other times charged with dissonance.

Dave Porter is a Los Angeles-based composer for television and film best known as the series composer for the EMMY®-acclaimed drama BREAKING BAD, scoring all 62 episodes and creating its iconic theme. For his work on the series, Dave was awarded the inaugural ASCAP Composer's Choice Award by his peers as Best Television Composer of 2013.

Since then, Dave has become a sought-after composer in Hollywood. He currently scores NBC's massive hit THE BLACKLIST starring James Spader as well as BETTER CALL SAUL, the Emmy nominated prequel to BREAKING BAD, which was cable television's most watched new show in 2015.

For FLESH AND BONE, the STARZ limited series that details the gritty underworld of professional ballet, Porter reunited with fellow BREAKING BAD alum Walley-Beckett. This dark and gritty series follows a young dancer, Claire, as she joins a prestigious New York City ballet company and encounters the glamour and dysfunction of the ballet world. She becomes Artistic Director Paul’s muse, creating new opportunities and new enemies. Claire's self-destructive tendencies amid her vaulting ambitions drive her in compelling, unforeseeable ways, especially when she is confronted with the machinations of the company's mercurial Artistic Director and an unwelcome visitor from her past.

“This is my first release on the Varèse Sarabande label, and is a comprehensive collection of my score," Porter concluded.  "FLESH AND BONE is a gritty, complex series that steadfastly explores the dysfunction and glamour of the ballet world.” Porter went on to say, “this score represents another facet of my work as a composer when working with classical orchestral instruments.”

STARZ presents the limited television series FLESH AND BONE, which debuted November 8, 2015. Varèse Sarabande will release the STARZ – Original Television Soundtrack digitally on December 11 and on CD January 15, 2015

Intrada: SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES Composed and Conducted by GEORGES DELERUE

For Something Wicked This Way Comes, composer Georges Delerue was overtly excited by the opportunity to write one of his first large-scale, Hollywood fantasy scores for a huge orchestra -- a score that could handle Gothic and avant-garde elements along with his trademark lyricism. In the course of two weeks, he wrote over 50 minutes of music—brash, exotic and at times demented, but grounded by a sweet melody for childhood innocence.  Director Jack Clayton was delighted: “It seems more than a miracle that you should have been able to compose such a magnificent score in so short a time,” he wrote in a letter to Delerue.

Delerue’s score deftly complements the suggestive shadows and quiet evil—as well as the sadness and sweetness of the father/son relationship at its heart. The film’s moralistic themes, mysterious carnival attractions and intimate humanity inspired him to fill his score with gut-rattling calliope material, Gallic lyricism, a sparkling music-box tune, a heightened funeral march, solemn drama and classic Hollywood suspense.  By most accounts, however, Clayton’s understated, slightly claustrophobic film simply wasn’t scary, or big, or fantastical enough, resulting in the film's editing, special effects, and music given a serious overhaul.  For Delerue, scoring the picture was quite a journey, one that ultimately led to the most disappointing moment in his career—the score went completely unused.

This presentation is sourced from the recently discovered complete 2˝ 24-track scoring session masters, stored in the Disney vaults -- unlabeled.  This amazing find allowed Intrada to newly mixed into digital stereo, including every sequence Delerue wrote for the film. This included several cues recorded prior to major postproduction changes that were, themselves, dropped from the then-existing cut of the film.

Something Wicked is a nostalgia-soaked morality tale about regret, growing old, and unwise wishes suddenly granted. At the emotional core of the story is Mr. Halloway: too old to play sports with his young son and incapable of saving him from nearly drowning earlier in his life.  His regrets, along with those of fellow his townspeople, draws the evil carnival owned by Mr. Dark, who is prepared to grant any and all wishes -- at a price.  Halloway's son and best friend, with his own deep desire, uncover the evil of the carnival.

Intrada: THE MONKEY KING Composed by CHRISTOPHER YOUNG The Slovak National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine Lucnica Chorus conducted by Allan Wilson

For the 2014 Chinese production of The Monkey King, composer Christopher Young composed a breathtaking, epic score.  Hired well in advance of the visual effects completion, Young wrote most of his music without the benefit of finished effects shots or a locked film.  Armed with this creative freedom, Young crafted an expansive score of a type not commonly seen in present-day Hollywood. The music brims and bristles with lush melody, ornamenting the ethereal beauty and majesty of the various gods, fueling the stormy wrath of the Bull Demon King, and charting Sun Wukong’s journey from a playful, wide-eyed innocent to a towering avatar of fury and divine retribution. "The thing that holds the score together, in a way that perhaps differentiates it from a lot of contemporary orchestral action scores, is the ever-presence of melody," comments Young.  He  infused the already sumptuous score with an array of Asian colors and textures, including ehru (a bowed Chinese fiddle), guzheng (a type of Chinese zither), shamisen (a three-string Japanese lute derived from the Chinese sanxian), pipa (a four-string pear-shaped Chinese lute) and assorted winds and percussion.

The sessions for The Monkey King took place at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall, with Nic Raine conducting the 80-piece Slovak National Symphony Orchestra and Young’s frequent collaborator Allan Wilson conducting the 40-member Lucnica Chorus.  To present The Monkey King on album, Young drew inspiration from English composer Gustav Holst and his famous orchestral suite The Planets, arranging his cues into ten selections titled after Chinese deities and other prominent characters from the film.

The legend of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, and how he came to wreak havoc in Heaven and challenge the power of the gods, is one of the most enduring stories in all Chinese literature. Rooted in myth and folklore, the tale first appeared as an episode within the sprawling sixteenth-century novel Journey to the West. Published anonymously, though commonly attributed to Wu Cheng’en, the work is celebrated as one of the four great literary masterpieces of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Portions of Sun Wukong’s story have been retold many times for film, television and the stage, but no adaptation to date has rivaled 2014’s The Monkey King for sheer scale.

Intrada: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS Composed and Conducted by DANNY ELFMAN

In Celebration of the 25th anniversary of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, Intrada presents an expanded edition of Danny Elfman's mesmerizing, fairy-tale score.  Keying off the film's opening with the 20th Century Fox logo adorned in falling snow and echoing the effect of snowflakes, the score starts with celesta notes and a soulful boys and women's choir Elfman's own Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The composer's opening showcases two melodies: one accentuating the fairy-tale aspect of the story, while a beautifully resolving melody underscores the emotional core of the tale.  Edward Scissorhands, in fact, allowed Elfman to explore a wide range of expression, from the opening fairy-tale vibe to the creepy, semi-suspenseful atmosphere of Eward's castle,  and the cheerful, innocent pizzicato of the world outside that Edward discovers.

Presented in cooperation with 20th Century Fox and Universal Music Group, this expanded edition is in near chronological sequence (some short cues were re-positioned for musical purposes) and includes a suite of extras featuring the trailer, alternates, Tom Jones "With These Hands" and Christmas carols.

The film depicts a shy housewife and Avon lady, Peg (Dianne Wiest), discovering a strange young man with scissors for hands. Named Edward, he lives alone in a foreboding hilltop castle. Flashbacks show Edward as a robot boy constructed by a kindly mad scientist (Vincent Price), who dies before he can provide Edward with human hands. Peg's daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder) and the strange young man soon begin experiencing the beginnings of a doomed, inexpressible love for one another. After demonstrating his artistic skills on the local shrubbery and his neighbors' hair, Edward is accepted by Peg's fellow suburbanites, but eventually their own provincial prejudices cause them to turn on the misfit and drive him back to his home.

Intrada - DOUBLE INDEMNITY: FILM NOIR AT PARAMOUNT Music by MIKLóS RóZSA, HUGO FRIEDHOFER, FRANZ WAXMAN, GAIL KUBIK, LEITH STEVENS, HEINZ ROEMHELD, and VICTOR YOUNG

Following the releases of the vintage Paramount scores The Lost Weekend and Desert Fury, Intrada's next entry is a 2-CD set featuring seven different composers writing for film noir classics.  The headliner is Miklós Rózsa's Oscar-winning score to Double Indemnity, in near complete form.  Rózsa composed three principal motifs for the film.  A restless “conspiracy” theme dominates his score, but it is the powerful murder theme that opens the film and the composer returns to this theme repeatedly with an almost tragic quality. The third principal theme is a love theme.

But that's not all!  This album also contains the surviving elements of several other Noir scores:

Friedhofer’s Ace in the Hole deftly matches the unusual mixture of tones Billy Wilder achieved in his unusually bleak dissection of modern journalism.  For Sorry, Wrong Number, Waxman set the film’s anxious tone with a dramatic main title cue which incorporated phone sound effects.  In The Desperate Hours, Gail Kubik took an unusual and daring approach, writing and recording a score he described as “pointillistic … a series of sounds which were completely unpredictable: you didn’t know when the next sound was coming or where it was coming from.”

For The Scarlet Hour, Leith Stevens supplied suitably dramatic and agitated original cues for key scenes, but the main musical focus of the film is the original song “Never Let Me Go,” written by the team of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.  Although the main titles of Union Station don’t list a composer, Heinz Roemheld scored the picture, yet little of his music ended up in the final film.  Finally, the nearly 30 minutes of Victor Young's I Walk Alone features a vivid and varied score including bluesy music and exciting chase music.

Most of the music in this album was sourced from 35mm magnetic film stored in the Paramount vaults. Desperate Hours is three-track stereo.  The Scarlet Hour is in “quasi stereo” because there were “directional angles” for certain cues, while all  the other film tracks are mono.

Lakeshore Records: AMERICAN HERO - Lorne Balfe

Lakeshore Records will release the AMERICAN HERO – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on December 11th and on CD in early 2016. The album features the film’s original score by Lorne Balfe (TERMINATOR: GENISYS, PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR).

"Any opportunity working with [writer/director] Nick Love is always going to be an interesting adventure,” said Balfe. “Nick might not be academically musical when he describes what he wants but he certainly lives and breathes music. Most of the time I think Nick has the most amazing soundtrack constantly running through his head!”

“The concept for AMERICAN HERO was simple; a different type of superhero movie - one that you could really believe in - from the story to the casting to the acting to the photography to the editing to the score,” said Love.  “For me, what makes Lorne's score so special is simply that’s it’s so unexpected. To have such poetic and stirring music juxtaposed with the impecunious and harsh nature of the ghetto in New Orleans, feels so right.”

“The music Nick wanted for his film was not going to be typical of the film’s genre,” explained Balfe.  “He wanted a score that was intimate and personal and it was a very difficult tight rope to walk in trying to prevent the music from potentially overstaying its welcome.  In the end though I think we were able to create a score that is as unique and surprising as the film itself. "

Screen Media Films presents AMERICAN HERO in select theaters and Video On Demand on December 11, 2015. Lakeshore Records will release the AMERICAN HERO – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on December 11 and on CD in early 2016.

Wake Up and Kill (aka Wake Up and Die) (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray + DVD]

During the 1960s Luciano Lutring committed more than one hundred armed robberies in Italy and on the French Riviera. To the media he was the 'machine gun soloist', a name he'd earned as he kept his weapon in a violin case. To the public he was a romantic figure, one who only targeted the wealthy, stealing more than 35 billion lire during his criminal career.

Wake Up and Kill was the logical extension of such fame. It became the first feature to commit Lutring's story to celluloid, shooting having begun mere months after his eventual arrest. Capitalizing on the breakthrough success of his performance in French television's The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Robert Hoffmann is perfect as Lutring, bringing just the right amount of charisma and youthful exuberance to his first major big screen role.

Directed by Carlo Lizzani (Requiescant), scored by Ennio Morricone, penned by the future screenwriter of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, and featuring that film's star, Gian Maria Volonté, in a key supporting role, Wake Up and Kill's true-crime thrills serve as an enthralling dry run for the poliziotteschi movies that would follow a few years later.

SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:
* Brand new 2K restoration of the film from the original camera negative
* High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray and Standard Definition DVD presentations of two versions of the film: the original full-length Italian release, and the shortened English-language cut

Halo: The Fall of Reach Animated Series Original Soundtrack - Features exclusive original song "Take This Life" by Tom Salta, Jillian Aversa and Frank O'Connor

Award-winning composer and music producer Tom Salta (Halo: Spartan Assault, Halo: Spartan Strike, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2: Anniversary soundtracks) scores Halo: The Fall of Reach, a new animated series set in the Halo universe. Released today on Blu-ray/DVD, the animated sci-fi epic is also included with the Digital Deluxe Edition, Limited Edition and Limited Collector's Edition of Halo 5: Guardians and can be viewed via The Halo Channel. The animated series original soundtrack will be available for digital download on iTunes, Microsoft Movies & TV, and all other digital music services on December 4.

Halo: The Fall of Reach tells the dramatic tale of the origin and intrigue behind the Spartan program that propelled characters like Master Chief and Dr. Catherine Halsey into the pantheon of Halo lore. The story reveals the events that brought the Master Chief and Blue Team together, including their Spartan training and the daring mission to strike back at the Covenant during the first days of the deadly alien invasion.

His third solo outing in the iconic sci-fi franchise, Salta's score for Halo: The Fall of Reach supports the origin story of the Master Chief and expands the legacy sound of the series with new themes while complementing Halo's musical blueprint of ethereal choral arrangements (including performances from the Keystone State Boy-choir and members of the New York Film Chorale), piano motifs, synth ambiance and sweeping sci-fi orchestral compositions. Sample tracks can be streamed at [CLICK HERE].

Furthermore, Salta composed, arranged and produced the first original pop song in the franchise's history, "Take This Life", featuring Jillian Aversa (Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary) on vocals and lyrics written by Frank O'Connor, Franchise Development Director of the Halo franchise. The song is available exclusively on Halo: The Fall of Reach's soundtrack.

Prior to his career in games, Salta toured with and worked on releases by a diverse array of popular music artists before transitioning to more studio work including producing, remixing and songwriting. Recording under the artist name "Atlas Plug," Salta released the critically acclaimed electronic / orchestral music album "2 Days or Die" which introduced a new hybrid sound to the visual entertainment industry, including high-profile placements on numerous television shows on ABC, CBS, MTV, NBC as well as movie trailers and video games.

Told in three connected acts, Halo: The Fall of Reach is an animated adaptation of the beloved Eric Nylund novel of the same name, and in many ways the origin story of the Master Chief and Blue Team. The animation is produced and directed by SEQUENCE, the award-winning Vancouver-based animation studio responsible for the Terminals featured in Halo 4 and Halo 2: Anniversary, and this marks their most ambitious and high-fidelity Halo animation to date.

Lakeshore Records: SUITS - Christopher Tyng

Lakeshore Records will release the soundtrack for SUITS featuring original music by composer Christopher Tyng and “Greenback Boogie” performed by Ima Robot. The album will be available digitally on December 11th and on CD February 12, 2016.

SUITS was created by and is executive produced by Aaron Korsh (“The Deep End”).  Doug Liman (The “Bourne” trilogy), David Bartis (“Covert Affairs”) and Gene Klein (“Covert Affairs”) of Hypnotic along with Anton Cropper (“Fairly Legal”), Daniel Arkin (“90210”) and Chris Downey (“King & Maxwell”) serve as executive producers. SUITS is shot on location in Toronto. Season five of SUITS resumes on January 27, 2016 at 10/9c on USA Network.

One of the most successful and recognized themes from the show is “Hardman Returns,” a piece Tyng created for the original return of Daniel Hardman, played by David Costabile (“Breaking Bad”) in the second season.

“It’s what I like to call ‘shark in the water’ music; there’s a lurking, ticking-time-bomb feeling to that piece that we’ve used quite a bit throughout the series,” Tyng said. “It’s a fan favorite, so it’s great to include it in this compilation.”

Tyng added that Mike Ross is always at risk of his past catching up with him and, as a result, there’s almost always something unsettling or haunting lurking in the background of the musical score.

“I’ll process various instruments into abstract sound design elements and ambiences that bring a sense of dark nostalgia - a musical subtext that reinforces to the audience that Mike’s secret past is never more than a few steps away from his present reality,” Tyng described.
