MovieScore Media: "Torpedo" music by Hannes De Maeyer

The latest release of MovieScore Media takes a dive under the sea with U-235 (also known as Torpedo in its native Belgium) with music by composer Hannes De Maeyer. Directed by Sven Huybrechts, the first Flemish submarine film ever is set during World War II and tells the story of a gang of Flemish rebels with a secret mission: they have to sail from Congo to the United States with a hijacked German U-boat carrying a cargo with which the Allies might win the war… The film stars renown actors Koen De Bouw, Sven De Ridder, Gilles De Schryver, Stefan Perceval, Joren Seldeslachts, Bert Haelvoet, Robrecht Vanden Thoren, Ella-June Henrard and Vic De Wachter in the lead roles.

As composer Hannes De Maeyer explains "I have always been a big fan of music from WW2-related films and games such as Medal of Honor by Michael Giacchino & Christopher Lennertz, Saving Private Ryan by John Williams or Band of Brothers by Michael Kamen: all instant classics! In preparation of 'U-235' I have completely immersed myself in that world. The major difficulty was finding the balance between nostalgia without making it sound too old-fashioned. That is something we, together with the director and the team from A Team Productions, have been working hard on. There was no doubt that we needed this score to be one recorded with large symphonic orchestra full of prominent brass instruments and percussion (snares, timpani, cymbals). That was just what this film needed. The references to and the atmosphere of nostalgic films such as 'The Great Escape' and 'Indiana Jones' lie in all aspects of the film, including the score."

Hannes De Maeyer is one of Belgium's most versatile composers. After obtaining his Master's degree in 'Music Production' at the School of Arts of University College Ghent, Hannes worked as an assistant to Steve Willaert, one of Belgium's most prolific screen composers. He is best known for his collaboration with director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, recently listed among 'Variety's 10 Directors to watch' with their third feature Gangsta. [
