Walt Disney Records: TOMORROWLAND [2015] - MICHAEL GIACCHINO

New from Walt Disney Records and available through limited distribution from Intrada and Amazon comes Michael Giacchino's epic score to the summer adventure Tomorrowland.   Giacchino pulled out all the stops for this soaring score, just the kind of film music enthusiasts love from the summer movie season.  Starting out in an almost mystical fashion for piano and strings, don't be deceived by the quiet opening, for the score soon slams down the gas pedal as the roller coaster musical journey takes off.  The brassy main theme propels the adventure forward, taking the viewer along for the ride into the future to help save the planet.

The generous soundtrack album includes 73 minutes of music, and of course the track titles include Giacchino's near-trademarked puns:

For some glimpses into the recording sessions, check out the 7:17 mark in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l34Y8zZZavI

The film presents two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird's riveting, mystery adventure, starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as "Tomorrowland." What they must do there changes the world and them forever.

INTRADA: INDECENT PROPOSAL [SCORE] - JOHN BARRY

A significant part of the 1993 Paramount film Indecent Proposal’s seductive charm is John Barry’s sad, sensual music.  In one of this most heartfelt themes of the '90s, the main theme captures the story’s essential feelings and honors its highest aspirations. An elegant piano melody floats across a warm string bed, and the sensation is one of romance tinged with sadness and loss. Throughout the score, strings are like beds of silk and champagne, and the piano— melodic and arpeggiated—is liberally sprinkled over them like rose petals. Everything is warm and luscious, even when the mood is sad or uncertain. Heartbreak is woven into the sensuality. Straightforwardly tonal, the score's mood ranges from nostalgically beautiful to dark and dangerous to sad and sexy.

At the time of the film's release, the soundtrack album to Indecent Proposal emphasized the songs heard in the film, including the original song to which John Barry contributed, “In All the Right Places,” and a single track medley running around 25 minutes. This new release features the complete John Barry instrumental score, newly mastered from the 1993 two-track stereo mixes by Shawn Murphy and Dennis Sands. This features every cue Barry recorded: film versions, album versions and alternate takes.

That path to an indecent proposal starts when Diana (Demi Moore) and David (Woody Harrelson), a young couple madly in love, run into financial straits. He’s an architect in the middle of building his dream house when the recession hits. So they venture to Vegas. There Diana encounters John Gage (Robert Redford), a wealthy billionaire who takes a shine to her. After the Murphys lose everything at the craps table, Gage swoops in and asks Diana to be his lady luck on a very expensive bet. He wins, and while schmoozing them with gratitude he coolly makes his indecent proposal: one night with her for $1 million. They balk at first, but the Murphys mull it over and decide to accept. That one night, the one they promised wouldn’t mean anything, begins to unravel their marriage and expose the true cost of the deal: consuming jealousy and heartbreak.

Intrada: The Lost Weekend [1945-2015] - Miklos Rózsa

In the 1945 Paramount film The Lost Weekend, composer Miklos Rózsa continued to build on what would become his famous film noir style -- and he had just introduced it in Double Indemnity the previous year.  Throughout the remainder of the decade it would become a signature style both for him and the genre in general.  It was a style steeped in dissonance, yearning and dark orchestral colors.  For Weekend,  Rózsa's melodies, harmonies, rhythms and orchestration suffuse the film with qualities of restlessness, yearning and struggle. Without this score, the film would have struggled to portray the seriousness of alcoholism and its destructive wake.  The main theme is a piercing siren call, often reinforced by the eerie, wailing timbre of the Theremin, representing main character Don Birnam’s overpowering addiction to alcohol. Another theme represents the faithful, loving and stabilizing presence of Helen as she struggles to hold onto and help Don. These are just examples of artistry found in this Oscar-nominated score.

Paramount transferred The Lost Weekend’s original optical music tracks to 35-millimeter magnetic tape long ago. However, it was only recently that archivists located these master tapes. Almost everything had been preserved, but age had taken its toll, and four cues were missing altogether.  Nonetheless, this classic score is now represented for the first time as definitively as possible.

The film portrays a first in film -- a stark view into the downward spiral of alcoholism and a front row seat to the impact of hitting bottom. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, and took home four:  Best Picture, Best Actor for Ray Milland, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Caldera Records: TRISHNA [Score] - Shigeru Umebayashi

Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the movie Trishna from 2011, directed by Michael Winterbottom. The movie is loosely based on the famous novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy which was already filmed in the late 70s by Roman Polanski. Winterbottom decides to let the story take place in India where a working class girl falls in love with a businessman. Although they have mutual feelings, it seems impossible to pursue their happiness due to their different traditions and upbringings. Their struggle is put into notes by Shigeru Umebayashi (2046, House of Flying Daggers) who delivers probably the saddest music of his outstanding career.

His soundtrack consists of several themes for string orchestra. While the waltz for Trishna works as a homage to Umebayashi's famous piece for Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love, his theme for Trishna and Jay and the heartfelt main theme run through the album in elegant variations, showing the emotional struggle of the films main characters. The ninth CD-release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

Milan Records: BRONSON [Tom Hardy]

There is no need to introduce Nicolas Winding Refn, the maverick director who made a worldwide impact with his 2011 hit Drive. But before Drive, film and music lovers around the world took notice of the young Danish director with his 2008 film, Bronson.

Starring Tom Hardy, Bronson tells the true story of Charlie Bronson, England’s most notorious prisoner. Highly stylized, Bronson features many of the elements of what would be soon to be seen as Nicolas Winding Refn‘s unique cinematic style: A strong musical sense, an understanding of stylized violence, great performances and an eye for beautiful compositions and images.

We are very excited and honored to bring to a larger audience the amazing and eclectic soundtrack to Bronson. The album features the iconic Digital Versicolor performed by Glass Candy, and songs by Pet Shop Boys and New Order. The best classical pieces used in the film by Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner… are also included. All City Media also designed the beautiful original art for the soundtrack release.
