Intrada: THE KILLING SEASON - Christopher Young

-----------------------------------------------
I must say I’m probably more excited about the Killing Season CD than any other music I’ve released in a while because it marks a new approach to the way in which I’m presenting a score.
-- Christopher Young

For composer Christopher Young, the album premiere of the soundtrack to the 2013 film Killing Season represents more than a film score. It is the “realization of an obsession.”  The album delivers a musical experience that transcends the film which inspired it. Having begun as a series of discrete cues, the score has been re-conceived and reworked into an extended meditation on the film’s narrative threads—hard men in a remote wilderness, the memory of haunted battlefields, the pain of isolation and the catharsis of confession. Much of this music has not merely been rearranged but rewritten and newly performed. The resulting composition respects its roots as a film score, but would be at home on the concert stage:

“So many movies sort of fall by the wayside, and their scores vanish,” Young notes. “What I’m trying to do is revitalize music that I believe in. I’ve become kind of obsessed with wanting to revisit my old scores, to see if I can modify them in a manner that would make them a more exciting listen. Killing Season is really the first fully orchestral score where I’ve been able to go back and say, ‘What can I do with this score to make it more digestible in a concert performance situation?’ I’m not saying that opportunity will ever arise—but this is how I would prefer to have the music presented.”

The score features cello as the dominant color, joined by an ensemble that includes piano, bagpipes and the dulcimer-like strains of a wire-strung Irish harp. Though the score was recorded overseas, cellist Ben Sollee recorded his solos in the United States. This allowed Young to exercise precise control over the mix—and also opened the door to an ambitious reconstruction when it came time to produce the album arrangement.   Young perceives the score as a concerto for cello and orchestra, divided into three movements.  The end result is an album that plays as an artistic work unto itself and gives the listener a musical journey more powerful than the usual presentation of a film score.

The film stars Robert DeNiro as a U.S. veteran and John Travolta as a former Serbian soldier playing cat-and-mouse games in the remote wilderness.

Lakeshore Records: SLOW WEST [2015] - Jed Kurzel

----------------------------------------------------
Lakeshore Records will release the SLOW WEST – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on May 19th and on CD June 23, 2015. The album features the film’s original score by Jed Kurzel (THE BABADOOK, MACBETH) and The Mess Hall band.  SLOW WEST earned the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic strand at Sundance 2015.

SLOW WEST is a western adventure set in late 19th Century Colorado, centered on a young man’s epic search for the love of his life. Michael Fassbender stars as Silas Selleck, a mysterious and inscrutable stranger acting as the paid protector to sixteen-year-old Scottish aristocrat Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is on a reckless journey through the American Wild West. Jay has grown up in the Scottish Highlands with Rose Ross (Caren Pistorius), a humble farmer’s daughter. As they mature, friendship grows into something deeper for Jay. When her father (Rory McCann) has to flee to America after a tragedy, Rose is suddenly torn from Jay’s life. Heartbroken, Jay turns his back on his privileged life and sets off to find Rose and win her heart.

“We steered away from anything typically ‘western’ and went for something bittersweet, more in tune with Jay’s journey,” said Kurzel. “A score that, like Jay, is European at heart and at odds with the brutality of the American West.”

A24 and DIRECTV present SLOW WEST exclusively available now on DIRECTV and in theaters and On Demand May 15, 2015.  Lakeshore Records will release the SLOW WEST – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on May 12th and on CD June 23, 2015.

Lakeshore Records: LUV [2015] - Nuno Malo

---------------------------------------------
Lakeshore Records will release the LUV – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on May 26 and on August 14, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by Nuno Malo (NO GOD NO MASTER, the celestine prophecy).

“We wanted a direction that was an exploration of texture rooted in a strong main theme,” said Malo. “To create a palette that was original, but not for the sake of being original. The director wanted to me to create a musical texture that would add the poignancy to the main character - the boy.  So there was quite a bit of experimentation. It starts out as a more electronic score, and moves toward a more orchestral palette as we reach towards the climatic scenes in the latter part of the film.”

“There were several key scenes, but for me the whole last 15 minutes of the film, which deals with loss, and pain, and courage, was pivotal,” Malo explained. “I knew we would eventually had to build the music towards those emotions, and the whole journey is a preparation for those moments.”

Indomina presents LUV currently available on DVD.  The LUV – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally on May 26 and on CD August 14, 2015.

DJ PON3 PRESENTS MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC REMIXED

----------------------------------------------------------------
Lakeshore Records and Hasbro, Inc. are releasing the forthcoming DJ PON3 PRESENTS MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC REMIXED digitally and on CD June 23, 2015.  Daniel Ingram’s beloved original songs are remixed by some of the top talent on the scene, including Faust & Shortee, Arkasia, Rubicon 7, Heavygrinder and more. The album was produced by Justin Lassen, who worked with all of the artists for the recording.

KRONOS RECORDS: BACKLIGHT [500Ltd] and VIRAL [300Ltd]

BACKLIGHT, by acclaimed Portuguese composer NUNO MALO.  For BACKLIGHT Kronos records goes back into the not too distant past of the composer to release his wonderfully melodic and affecting soundtrack for BACKLIGHT (aka THE SIGNAL).

The composer has created a melodically sublime and particularly haunting musical score for this motion picture from 2010 which became the number 1 box office movie in Portugal in that year. The director Fernando Fergata produced a thought provoking piece of cinema and it has thankfully in recent times been referred to as a cinematic masterpiece by a number of critics, which is a statement that I would have to agree with. BACKLIGHT is a solely Portuguese production but most of the picture was shot in The United States which is a surprising factor.

VIRAL is a 2013 horror / thriller film directed by Lucas Figueroa and starring Aura Garrido, Juan Blanco and Miguel Ángel Muñoz. Raul is The Chosen One to be the lowly reality star of a promotion and viral campaign for FNAC. The deal, He has to live 24 hours in the store for one week. The catch, his only contact with the outside world will be through social media where he will be known as the Supergeek. If the Supergeek generates 1.000.000 “likes” by week’s end he gets the prize of 50.000 €, enough to pay off lots of bills, parking tickets and help his sick father. Strange things start to happen and his online presence gets VIRAL!

For Viral composer Jiménez Lacima utilises a very American palette for the genre, however adding to it his own colors, that show his classical training and his eclectic musical tastes making of VIRAL standing out of the usual staple of the genre, arming it with dramatic and very personal moments that make this score shine where many others fail.  The score was recorded in Hungary with the Budapest Art Orchestra under the direction of Peter Pejtsik.

Two more wonderful scores from some awesome composers and from two different sides of the coin. It is worth looking into, I am sure glad these scores, composers and label is out there...

KRONOS RECORDS - THE GOLD COLLECTION - MAY [2015]

Il Gigante Di Metropolis (The Giant Of Metropolis), a 1961 Italian film by Umberto Scarpelli starring Bella Cortez, Roldano Lupi and legendary muscleman Gordon Mitchell in the main role. The film was a unique hybrid of 2 genres very popular at the time, Peplum and Sci-Fi. Whereas the second is not as evident as the first once can still definitely call the film a hybrid of the two. The music has definitely played a major role in putting the sci-fi element under a stronger light.

The music for this unique film was composed by Italian legendary composer Maestro Armando Trovajoli; whose music carreer spanned for over 60 years! Composer of classics such as Il Vedovo (Alberto Sordi), Il Fornaretto Di Venezia (Stefania Sandrelli), La Guerra Continua (Jack Palance), Gli Onorevoli (Totò), Il Magnifico Cordunto (Cardinale & Tognazzi), Matrimonio all'Italiana (Loren & Mastroianni), Rugantino (Celentano), La Famiglia (Gassman & Sandrelli)  and over 300 more films. His music is featured in documentaries, commericals and more recently his music from I Lunghi Giorni Della Vendetta was heard again on Tarantino's Kill Bill. The genres he scored ranged from drama to comedy, from erotic to adventure films, Peplums to Spaghetti Westerns. You name it and Trovajoli could do it and do it to perfection and ledning it his very own distinctive sound, like he did with IL GIGANTE DI METROPLOLIS.

L'Araucana : Massacro Degli Dei (also known as "Massacre Of The Gods" and "The Conquest Of  Chile"), a 1971 Italo-Spanish-Chilean co-production Directed by Julio Coll, starring Elsa Martinellia and Venantino Venantini.

The music for this dramatic adventure film was composed by Italian composer Maestro Carlo Savina;  music director of films such as Coppola's The Godfather (1972),  Fellini's Amarcord (1973), Annaud's The Bear (1988) and close collaborator of various great composers of the 20th century such as Morricone, Trovajoli, Rota, Nascimbene, Myers, Sondheim, Sarde and none less than the legendary Miklós Rózsa, whose work left a very clear mark on L'ARUACANA. The gypsy violin parts and melodramatic moments are a clear homage to Miklós Rózsa (for whome Savina had a deep respect and admiration) and his epic music.

Canterbury N.2 (Nuove Storie D'Amore Del '300)  also known as Tales of Canterbury. This 1973 film starring Patrizia Adiutori, Rik Battaglia, Shirley Corrigan and Federico Boido was directed by John Shadow aka Aristide Massacesi, known to the public as Joe D'Amato.  In this film Geoffrey Chaucer (yes the writer), escorted by Knight Quick, is located in an inn along other pilgrims going to Canterbury. As the bad weather prevents their departure, the gathering kill time by telling by stories, of a very specific kind...

The music for Canterbury N2 was written by none less than notorious duo (and brothers) Guido and Maurizio De Angelis (Sandokan, Yor, Zorro Is Back, Mannaja, Galaxy Express 999, Rocky Joe, Around the World with Willy Fog and an endless list of films for Bud Spencer and Terence Hill)  The music of this CD encompasses a wide yet very well glued musical spectrum. Each story narrated by the people of the Inn has its own score, there are medieval ballads, love songs and dark cryptic choral chants. The music on this disc will definitely not let you get stuck in a rut of monotony, quite the opposite, at the end you will just want it was longer.
