SUMTHING ELSE MUSIC WORKS: "WARHAMMER : THE END TIMES" - VERMINTIDE OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK

Today, Sumthing Else Music Works announced that BAFTA award-winning Danish composer Jesper Kyd's dark and twisted acoustic soundtrack for the first person melee/shooter Warhammer: The End Times - Vermintide, based on the popular Games Workshop Warhammer series, will be released via digital and streaming outlets on September 26. The 36-track album compiled by Kyd includes the core game's original soundtrack, new music from the DLC expansions as well as instrumental songs heard in the game's local tavern, Red Moon Inn. Pre-order the official soundtrack now at Amazon, iTunes and Sumthing.com.

"It's a dynamic, raw and violent score that belongs to Vermintide's dark medieval setting," says Jesper Kyd. "We wanted the score to sound like it was performed by a Skaven band on acoustic instruments mangled by some mad Skaven scientist in the dark ages. It's very different from anything I have written in the past."

Kyd also mixed the score's visceral tracks with more traditional folk music, performed by a three-piece band in an old English-style pub, the Red Moon Inn, to give contrast to the intense combat experience and Skaven music, and to further define the historical period of Vermintide's world.

Developed by independent games studio Fatshark in Sweden, Warhammer: The End Times - Vermintide is a co-operative action first person shooter and melee combat adventure set in the End Times of the iconic Warhammer fantasy universe. Vermintide is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Lakeshore Records: "REMEMORY" by Gregory Tripi

REMEMORY was written by Michael Vukadinovich and Mark Palansky and produced by Daniel Bekerman and Lee Clay. The film explores the unexplained death of Gordon Dunn (Martin Donovan), a visionary scientific pioneer whose body is found shortly after the unveiling of his newest work: a device able to extract, record and play a person’s memories. Gordon’s wife, Carolyn (Julia Ormond – Mad Men, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Legends of the Fall), retreats into her house and cuts off contact with the outside world when a mysterious man (Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Station Agent) shows up. After stealing the machine, he uses it to try and solve the mystery, beginning an investigation of memories that lead him to unexpected and dangerous places.

Directed by Palansky (Penelope, Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events), REMEMORY folds science, superstition and the supernatural into a place where one man finds terror – and the truth. The film will be released by Google Play on August 24th, 2017, and will be in theaters by Lionsgate Premiere on September 8th, 2017.

Lakeshore Records: "BoJack Horseman" (Music From the Netflix Original Series)

Lakeshore Records will release BoJack Horseman (Music From the Netflix Original Series) digitally September 8th, on CD September 29th and vinyl coming this winter.  The soundtrack features the iconic main title track by Patrick Carney, and the infectious closing theme by Grouplove.  Michelle Branch, Oberhofer, Nina Simone and original songs and score by Jesse Novak are also featured.  The album was produced and music supervised by Andy Gowan.

Set in a Los Angeles in which humans and anthropomorphic animal-people coexist, BoJack Horseman is the Critics’ Choice Award-Winning animated show about one man (who is also a horse) who peaked early and is trying to figure out what to do with his life now. An outrageous and dark comedy with a melancholy center, the show asks the question, “What happens when you have the world at your fingertips and you still can’t figure out how to be happy?”

2K: "XCOM® 2: WAR OF THE CHOSEN" by Composer Tim Wynn

2K released the XCOM® 2: War of the Chosen - Original Game Soundtrack digitally on August 29, 2017. The album features original music by Tim Wynn (Disney’s Mech-X4, Darkness II).

“Overall the music for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen has a much darker and grittier tone that of XCOM2,” Wynn described.  Although XCOM 2 is about Earth’s potential alien encounter with Earth, for this score I went old school and went more analog.  It was my first score using the Matrix Brute.  It’s a wicked sounding analog beast.  I guess you could best describe the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen sound as being orchestral analog.”

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen also allowed Wynn to revisit the themes he created for XCOM2 and XCOM2: Shen’s Last Gift.   “Even though the focus of the music for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is mainly on the new characters, there is still plenty of themes from XCOM 2,” said Wynn.  “The emotional themes for the WOTC soundtrack actually come from the first DLC XCOM 2 Shen’s Last Gift. The theme revolves around a father saying goodbye to his daughter Lily Shen.”

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen adds extensive new content in the fight against ADVENT when additional resistance factions form in order to eliminate the alien threat on Earth. In response, a new enemy, known as the “Chosen,” emerges with one goal: recapture the Commander. The expansion includes new Hero classes to counter the “Chosen”, new enemies, missions, environments and increased depth in strategic gameplay.

COMPOSER BEAR McCREARY CHANNELS PERCUSSIVE SOUNDS OF THE TYPEWRITER TO SCORE J.D. SALINGER BIOPIC - REBEL IN THE RYE

Composer Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV’s Outlander), known for his infectious use of percussive instruments and out-of-the-box musical approach, channels the sounds of the typewriter for the score for the J.D. Salinger biopic, Rebel in the Rye.  Sparks & Shadows will release the soundtrack on September 8th.

Rebel in the Rye may very well be a score that McCreary was destined to write.  The son of a novelist, the sound of a typewriter has been a companion since he was a child.  “The percussive cadence of typewriter tapping has rattled around my brain since I was born,” he said.  Scoring Rebel in the Rye gave McCreary the chance to channel those sounds, both figuratively and literally, into a rich, orchestral tapestry.

It took some convincing, though, for writer/director Danny Strong to see that McCreary, more known for films such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, and TV shows like The Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica, was the right man for the job.  The two however shared a connection and musical inspiration – the great Elmer Bernstein.  After learning that McCreary was Elmer’s last protégé, working with him for nearly a decade, Strong was intrigued, and asked for musical demos from the composer.  Any reservations Strong may have had were quickly put to rest, and the two worked closely together during the scoring process.

Varèse Sarabande: "AMERICAN ASSASSIN" by Steven Price

Varèse Sarabande will release the AMERICAN ASSASSIN – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD on September 15, 2017. The album features the original music composed by Steven Price (GRAVITY, SUICIDE SQUAD).

“Everything about [director] Michael Cuesta’s approach to the movie focused on character… the motivations and complex interrelationships between the story’s principle players” said Price. “We talked a lot about how the music could support Michael’s psychological approach to the storytelling.”

AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a world war.

“The very first scene in the film portrays a moment in our lead character’s life that changes everything, and gives him the motivation that drives his life beyond that point,” Price explained. “Within the cue that plays there I needed to capture the intensity and emotion of the events themselves, whilst also introducing themes and devices that would then reveal their importance as the film progresses.”

Price continued, “There are themes of loss, anger and revenge, and a lot of my job was giving the characters clear musical identities that we could develop and combine in various ways as the character’s journeys emerge and as the film builds to it’s climax. Michael was always looking for characters to have recognizable themes and sounds within a score that allowed the tension and mystery of the movie to develop in a very intense way.”

Steven Price is an Academy Award-winning composer. In 2014 his groundbreaking score for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity won him not only the Academy Award but also the BAFTA, Critics’ Choice Award, the Satellite Award, and ASCAP’s first-ever Film Composer of The Year Award. Subsequent projects have included Fury, the WWII epic starring Brad Pitt, written and directed by David Ayer; Believe, a drama series produced by Alfonso Cuaron and JJ Abrams for NBC; the BBC’s The Hunt, a landmark natural history documentary series for which Price won his second BAFTA, and Warner Brothers’ 2016 hit Suicide Squad.

Price’s debut feature score was for Joe Cornish’s 2011 feature Attack the Block, produced by Edgar Wright. The score earned Price awards for Best Original Soundtrack from both the Austin Film Critics Association and the Sitges Film Festival. Price’s collaboration with Wright continued in 2013, with Price composing the original score for the Universal comedy The World’s End, before the release in 2017 of Baby Driver marked the culmination of a ten-year creative process.

Lakeshore Records "LOOK AND SEE: A PORTRAIT OF WENDELL BERRY"

LOOK & SEE revolves around the divergent stories of several residents of Henry County, Kentucky who each face difficult choices that will dramatically reshape their relationship with the land and their community.

In 1965, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County, where he bought a small farm house and began a life of farming, writing and teaching.  This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half century later Henry County, like many rural communities across America, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation, the agrarian virtues of simplicity, land stewardship, sustainable farming, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor, chemical fertilizers, soil erosion and debt - all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window, Berry has watched this struggle unfold, becoming one of its most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life.

Filmed across four seasons in the farming cycle, LOOK & SEE blends observational scenes of farming life, interviews with farmers and community members with evocative, carefully framed shots of the surrounding landscape.  Thus, in the spirit of Berry’s agrarian philosophy, Henry County itself will emerge as a character in the film - a place and a landscape that is deeply interdependent with the people that inhabit it.

Lakeshore Records: SHOWTIME SERIES "DARK NET"

Advancements in technology have made it possible for us to connect in the most astonishing ways. A documentary series that explores the furthest reaches of the internet and the people who frequent it, Dark Net provides a revealing and cautionary look inside a vast cyber netherworld rarely witnessed by most of us. Provocative, thought-provoking and frequently profound, each episode illuminates an exciting, ever-expanding frontier where people can do anything and see anything, whether they should or not.

ABOUT JUSTIN MELLAND: Multiple award winning film composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Justin Melland primarily works in the demanding world of film and television, creating refreshingly inventive scores at his studio The Eleventh Laboratory, in Los Angeles, California.

The Washington Post called out his score for THE KILL TEAM by Oscar nominated Director Dan Krauss as “A brilliantly spare and evocative soundtrack”.  The Hollywood Reporter also wrote of his score for Showtime’s DARK NET “And the antiseptic visuals, coupled with the droning score by Justin Melland, suggest Laura Poitras' Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour with a slightly pulpier edge.”

Recent projects Justin has scored are DARK NET (Showtime) WATER AND POWER (Sundance 2017), THE FORCE (Sundance 2017), PARCHED (Jigsaw and National Geographic 2017), EXTREMIS (Tribeca 2016), BELIEF (OWN/Discovery 2015), IN FOOTBALL WE TRUST (Sundance 2015), THE KILL TEAM (Tribeca 2014), THE REDEMPTION OF GENERAL BUTT NAKED (Sundance 2011), LIFE 2.0 (Sundance 2010).

Lakeshore Records: BIRTH OF THE DRAGON

Set against the backdrop of 1960s San Francisco, BIRTH OF THE DRAGON is a modern take on the classic movies that Bruce Lee was known for. It takes its inspiration from the epic and still controversial showdown between an up-and-coming Bruce Lee and Kung Fu master Wong Jack Man - a battle that gave birth to a legend.

For the score for “Birth of the Dragon”, a Bruce Lee fable, Reza Safinia collaborated with H Scott Salinas. Together they fused traditional Chinese instrumentation with orchestra and industrial electronica to score an East meets West clash between the Shaolin temple, and Lee’s philosophy of opening Kung Fu to the West.

INTRADA: Bruce Broughton's "HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID/OFF HIS ROCKERS"

Disney's 1992 sequel to the hit Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is the focus of Intrada's latest release from the Disney catalog. It's been 25 years since Intrada released the album to Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, and this new production gives the entire score a 21st-century technological makeover. The original Intrada CD offered 40 minutes of the score’s highlights, carefully selected and edited by composer Bruce Broughton into a compelling listening experience. For this newly remastered and expanded release, the running time has been increased to an hour and the program now features several previously unreleased sequences that bring further variations and new ideas into play.

Premiering here as well is Broughton's score to the animated short Off His Rockers that appeared before the film during its theatrical run. Underscoring the tale about a rocking horse who tries to rejuvenate the imagination of a little boy numbed by playing video games, Broughton fashioned the score as both a nostalgic glimpse of childhood innocence and a rousing paean to the Old West. This four-minute sequence is like a thrilling mini-overture to Bruce Broughton’s dazzling—and dizzying—score for Honey, I Blew Up the Kid.

In this follow up to the 1989 original, Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis), now working for a high-tech lab in Nevada, is trying to adapt his shrinking-machine technology into doing the reverse. With the help of his now-teenage son, he is unfortunately successful in a mishap that renders his toddler, Adam, prone to ballooning in size. At first Adam simply stomps around the house, attracting the unwanted attention of neighbors, but before long he’s towering over the Las Vegas Strip and strumming the gigantic Hard Rock Cafe guitar. Only a mother’s love can keep Adam still enough for Wayne to zap him back to crib-size, and Diane Szalinski (Marcia Strassman) gets herself blown up to save the day.

Kino Lorber announces the DVD release of Down Down the Deep River...

Kino Lorber announces the DVD release of Down Down the Deep River, written and directed by Will Sheff of Okkervil River. This 42-minute, dialogue-free, dreamlike fantasy film tells the story of the friendship that develops between two young boys in 1980s small-town New Hampshire, set to a musical soundscape drawn from Okkervil River's song "Down Down the Deep River".

Set to street on September 5, Down Down the Deep River comes to DVD, and packed with special features including audio commentary by Will Sheff and Director of Photography Johnny North, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, music videos, and a read-along adventure book and recording. The film will also become available digitally on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video on September 5.

Down Down The Deep River marks the directorial debut of Will Sheff, lead singer and songwriter for Okkervil River. Shot in Sheff's hometown in 2014 with local non-actors, the dreamy, dialogue-free short film is a story of childhood, imagination, alienation, and loss as two young boys form a friendship and spur the unfolding strange events in 1980s small town New Hampshire.

For Sheff, Down Down the Deep River contains strong autobiographical elements. The film was shot in his own hometown of Meriden, NH, using mostly non-professional child actors from the area. The film crew was a multi-generational mix of New York-based professionals and local volunteers from the area. The locations are heavily autobiographically weighted, using actual classrooms at the elementary school attended by Sheff, the production design includes elements inspired by his childhood toys and furniture, and even the meal eaten in a dinner scene was made from his mother's old recipe, lending the film a strong mix of reality and autobiography.

Impeccable art direction brings magic to nostalgic, dreamlike, fictionalized representations of Sheff's own childhood memories, filtering them through the aesthetics of the cornerstone children's fantasy films of the era - E.T., Explorers, and The Goonies to name a few.

In achieving this nostalgic tone for the film, Sheff said "I wanted to capture my own memories of childhood -- not the truth but rather how I remember it feeling to be a kid -- but I also wanted make an artwork that enacted my own desperate and melodramatic sense of nostalgia while also speaking to the way that nostalgia misrepresents what actually happened. And I wanted to make sense of the role that pop entertainment plays in all of that."

Sheff scored the film to a musical landscape drawn from his band's song "Down Down the Deep River" from their 2013 album The Silver Gymnasium. The score was inspired by the shooting conditions of the film, which involved re-visiting the same location four times throughout the year to capture the change of the seasons. Sheff's score reflects the seasonal feel of the film, shifting palette from warm bubbly synths in spring to electric guitar in summer to woodwinds in the fall and a piano and string quartet in winter.
