MVD Entertainment Group: Arrow Films (UK) to release Day of Anger, Blind Woman's Curse, and Mark of the Devil in the US

MVD Entertainment Group announces the distribution of Arrow Video in North America with a host of cult titles receiving deluxe treatment in video, audio, supplements and artwork. Arrow's global reputation as one of the finest labels in the world has come about through consistent high quality product and a focus on fan-based products always at its core. This includes a major investment on restoring original material through modern techniques as well as pioneering packaging solutions and newly commissioned artwork for each release.

Arrow launch titles include Tonino Valerii's Spaghetti Western Day of Anger [I Giorni dell'ira, aka Gunlaw] starring genre icons Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma; Michael Armstrong's bloody and brutal critique of state-funded religious corruption Mark of the Devil in a director-approved release; and the thrillingly bizarro yakuza-samurai-ghost story-horror hybrid from Teruo Ishii, Blind Woman's Curse (1971, also known as Black Cat's Revenge). Future releases include films never-before-released on DVD and/or Blu-ray from European and Japanese cult directors.

The launch l kicks-off with North American Blu-ray premieres of Mark of the Devil on March 17th, followed by Blind Woman's Curse on March 24th and Day of Anger on March 31st.

DAY OF ANGER (Blu-ray / DVD):

When Sergio Leone turned Lee Van Cleef into a major star with For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the actor sensibly stayed in Italy to make several more spaghetti westerns, including this one from Leone's former assistant Tonino Valerii that genre aficionados rank amongst the best ever made. Giuliano Gemma plays street cleaner Scott Mary, relentlessly bullied by the people of the small town of Clifton. When legendarily ruthless master gunfighter Frank Talby (Van Cleef) rides into town, Scott seizes the opportunity to lift himself out of the gutter, and possibly even surpass Talby's own skills. But what is Talby doing in Clifton in the first place? This lively, intelligent western, notable for the chemistry between its charismatic leads, some memorable action set-pieces (including a rifle duel on horseback that has to be seen to be believed), and a jazzy Riz Ortolani score, is presented here in an exclusive high-definition restoration from the original Techniscope negative.

BLIND WOMAN'S CURSE (Blu-ray / DVD):

A thrilling Yakuza film featuring eye-popping visuals, sensational fight sequences and the gorgeous Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood, Stray Cat Rock), in her first major role. Akemi (Kaji) is a dragon tattooed leader of the Tachibana Yakuza clan. In a duel with a rival gang Akemi slashes the eyes of an opponent and a black cat appears, to lap the blood from the gushing wound. The cat along with the eye-victim go on to pursue Akemi's gang in revenge, leaving a trail of dead Yakuza girls, their dragon tattoos skinned from their bodies. A bizarre blend of the female Yakuza film and traditional Japanese ghost story, with a strong dash of grotesque-erotica (the same movement was a sensibility of Edogawa Rampo whose works were adapted by Ishii in Horrors of Malformed Men), Blind Woman's Curse is a delirious mash-up of classic genre tropes, of which Ishii was no stranger, having directed everything from Super Giant films to Biker movies!

MARK OF THE DEVIL (Blu-ray / DVD):

Once proclaimed as "positively the most horrifying film ever made", Mark of the Devil arrives in a director-approved edition featuring a new restoration of the feature. A bloody and brutal critique of religious corruption, Mark of the Devil sees horror icon Udo Kier (Flesh for Frankenstein, Suspiria) play a witchfinder's apprentice whose faith in his master (Herbert Lom) becomes severely tested when they settle in an Austrian village. Presided over by the sadistic Albino (a memorably nasty turn from Reggie Nalder), the film presents its morality not so much in shades of grey as shades of black. Written and directed by Michael Armstrong, who would later pen Eskimo Nell, The Black Panther and House of the Long Shadows, this classic shocker has lost none of its power over the years.

Interview with Troy Feener - Drummer for Druckfarben

Always giving you more, something cool, something different... I give you a chance to know Troy Feener - Drummer for Druckfarben. I thank him and Anne for getting this together, thank you.

Jeremy [Howlin' Wolf]

Howlin' Wolf: Please tell us who are you, what part do you have within "Druckfarben" and how did you come to be in the group "Druckfarben"?

Troy Feener: Troy here, I am the lead drumming for Druckfarben. In 2007 I was given the opportunity to put together a group to recreate Yes's Close to the Edge and The Yes Album with Phil. I told him my first call for guitar would be Ed. I asked Peter but he was unavailable and Ed brought in Will.

When the show was over we all wanted to continue playing together but it took a few years until we put out our first CD. 

Howlin' Wolf: Tell us something you will take away from your release "Second Sound" and how this may differ from previous releases?

Troy Feener: I enjoyed making Second Sound much more than the first DC because I was not playing alone to stem tracks. We had more of a band vibe even though Ed was still the principal writer. Will contributed some ideas and everyone seemed to be in good spirits.

Howlin' Wolf: Do you feel you connect with any song from "Second Sound" on a personal level, when you hear it you say "that is about me"?

Troy Feener: Not really, I have not contributed to the lyric writing and I think that the lyrics represent more of Ed's world view than my own. 

Howlin' Wolf: Share a story that happened on stage, how as a group do you handle the situation?
 

Troy Feener: We played a gig once where a friend of ours came out and tried to clap along very loudly. At first we were getting upset but eventually all we could do was laugh. The same thing happens when people try to dance to our music, sometimes it can be more entertaining than the band. 

Howlin' Wolf: Do you find that places like "You-tube" helps get groups message out, since places like MTV don't actually share music anymore?

Troy Feener: Ya, the Internet works for bands like Druckfarben and non mainstream bands. I would like to believe that the Progressive Rock community knows that in order for indie bands to continue making records that they need real support. Druckerfarben would love to tour Europe but it has not become financially feasible yet.

Troy Feener (Drums, percussion) - Troy Feener was born to play the drums as his estranged father had been a professional drummer until he was 12 years old. After he had the opportunity to use his fathers kit he began lessons and searched out other musicians of similar ability. He attended music college and worked in music stores on the side. A few years later he found himself in a few different bands with Ed and hired Ed in the first gig he aquired as a band leader in an ethiopean restaurant. When their final ensemble dissolved Troy left for the road playing in a top 40 band 6 nights a week all across Canada. The musical education from that time away translated into an gig with Red Rider and Big Faith and Troy continued his touring for several more years with time in Honeymoon Suite, Rik Emmett, Jeff Healey, David Usher,Tom Cochrane and many others. In 2005 He began to play with Classic Albums Live recreating classic recordings from the 60's and 70's. It was here that the foundation for Druckfarben would be laid and as they say the rest is history!

The House on Pine Street: TRAILER and Movie Premier!

World Premiere will be on Saturday February 28th at 10PM at CINEQUEST in San Jose, CA where our film has been called a "chilling genre-bender" and an "unnerving psychological twist on the 'haunted house'" The premiere will immediately be followed by 2 subsequent screenings at Cinequest, as well as the Fargo Film Festival in North Dakota, among others (the rest we unfortunately can't reveal until the festivals officially reveal their schedules).

Seven months pregnant, Jennifer Branagan (Emily Goss) reluctantly returns to her hometown in Kansas after an unexpected mental breakdown. Coping with her fears of motherhood, a strained relationship with her husband Luke (Taylor Bottles), and the overbearing presence of her own mother, Meredith (Cathy Barnett). Jennifer struggles to regain control of her life. But when strange things start happening in their new rental home, Jennifer begins to fear that it may be haunted. Along in her convictions, Jennifer is forced to question her sanity as she attempts to find out what, if anything, is plaguing the house. 

"The House on Pine Street" is a truly independent production. The project was initially funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Filming took place over 19 days in the spring of 2014 with a skeleton crew consisting of recent USC School of Cinematic Arts grads and University of Kansas grads. This production was a complete DIY experience with the cast and crew living together in the "haunted" house during filming (at times, believing the house was haunted themselves). In addition, each department basically consisted of one person (our DP was our gaffer, our PD was our costumer, etc.). From conception to our premiere on February 28th, the film will have taken only a year and a half to complete.

Milan Records: RED ARMY [2015] - Christophe Beck and Leo Birenberg

From Oscar® nominated and Emmy award-winning filmmakers, RED ARMY is a feature documentary about the Soviet Union and the most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team. Told from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov, the story portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy. From the USSR to Russia, the film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union.

RED ARMY is an inspiring story about the Cold War played out on the ice rink, and a man who stood up to a powerful system and paved the way for change for generations of Russians.
 

The score is a great reflection on the story being told, we can feel a deepening cold steel face by composers Christophe Beck and Leo Birenberg. We are faced to a strong inspired piece of music that does follow along with this documentary and could stand on it's own. Nicely done.

Making Red Army provided an opportunity both to explore my heritage and to examine the impact hockey had on the culture, politics and legacy of the Soviet Union. I was born and raised in the United States by Soviet immigrants who seldom spoke about their past. I got my first pair of skates at age six, and played competitively throughout my youth, ultimately for Yale University. Training in the U.S. was focused on winning rather than player development. Practice was often basic and redundant. Coaches only paid attention to the standout players who scored the most goals. 

When I was 13, I moved to a team that hired a new coach from the Soviet Union. Like most American kids, all I knew about Soviet hockey was the country’s storied loss to the U.S. in the 1980 Olympics. The coach’s philosophy and training methods were rigorous and unusual: we were forced to walk on our hands and do somersaults on the ice; we carried tires and skated with teammates on our backs. Perhaps the biggest difference was that he encouraged creativity and taught us to think as a unit. Many in the Chicago hockey community didn’t take him seriously. But he transformed my entire concept of the sport. I tracked down old Soviet hockey footage and what I saw was eye-opening. Soviet hockey was amazingly creative and improvisational. The Soviets moved fluidly, like one body, and it looked more like an art form than a game. That’s how I wanted to play.

When I was at Yale, I studied politics and history and learned about the unusual role sport played in the Soviet Union. The Red Army team was designed as an instrument of propaganda to prove the superiority of the Soviet system. The country’s investment in the team’s success was massive. The demanding lifestyle and oppressive circumstances under which the players trained were a reflection of broader Soviet society. It became clear to me that the Red Army’s style of play, too, was significantly informed by the country’s ideology. Much like Communism, there was little emphasis on the individual. Those who became heroes earned as much money as teachers. Priority was placed on serving your teammates and your country, and expressing individuality or questioning authority was forbidden.

Today’s Russian leadership is comprised both of devoted fans of the Red Army team and of the players themselves. To understand the history of the team and the era is to understand much about who makes decisions in Russia today.

Red Army is about how an incredibly oppressive system produced one of the greatest teams in history. That success came with tremendous personal costs. My intention in making this film is to honor the Soviet struggle and to celebrate the art that emerged from such a charged and unique time in history.

Welcome... Caldera Records and their latest Release: Transsiberian/Princesas [2015] - Alfonso de Vilallonga

Wanted to welcome Caldera Records to our roster of score/soundtracks as we hope for their future success and we can follow along. It's all about the music!

Transsiberian is a tough, edgy thriller by acclaimed director Brad Anderson (The Machinist, The Call) which was well-received by both critics and audiences alike. The movie stars Emily Mortimer and Woody Harrelson as a couple who travels from China to Moscow only to get involved in a dangerous drug smuggling crime, making their holiday to a fight for survival. For Transsiberian, Vilallonga wrote a moody, dark and yet at times surprisingly tender and melodic score for orchestra and solo-musicians like the cello which is featured prominently with virtuous solos.

 

Coupled with Transsiberian is the music for the well-known Spanish production Princesas about the friendship of two prostitutes and their struggle in both their lives and their profession. Vilallonga provides them with a tender main theme which receives its variations throughout the whole score with solos by piano, violin, cello, clarinet and accordion. Vilallonga, whose most famous project is the silent black and white-movie Blancanieves, is at the top of his game with these two original works which deserve to be heard on CD.

 

As with every release of Caldera Records, the album features an exclusive audio commentary by the composer who talks about his career and his musical approach. The seventh production of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

Lakeshore Records: THE SONG [Score] - Vince Emmett

Lakeshore Records will release the THE SONG –Original Motion Picture Score, digitally on February 10th and on CD May 5, 2015.  The album features original score composed by Vince Emmett (PHAROAH’S ARMY, NOT A FAN).

“Once director Richard Ramsey set the story of King David in modern times and Americana music, the ship had wind in it's sails,” said Emmett.  “The characters in The Song are flawed in a very real and believable way.  When the score holds a mirror up and accurately reflects those flaws, it becomes more than music.”

Vince Emmett's musical career arcs from the bluegrass of his Kentucky home to the mountain ranges of Ethiopia.  His eclectic music education began at the age of 10 when he performed weekly on a televised country music show alongside Allison Krauss.  From his study of the classics at the University of Illinois, he acquired an appreciation for the discipline of all the old masters. When the road beckoned, Vince toured playing gospel music. This led him to a small Kentucky recording studio where he honed his craft under the mentorship of bluegrass legends and innovators including Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, and Sam Bush, JD Crowe, Doyle Lawson, Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice, which quickly led him to a major label recording contract with Elektra Entertainment, and a publishing contract as a writer with EMI Music Publishing. 

THE SONG follows aspiring singer-songwriter Jed King (Alan Powell of Anthem Lights) as he struggles to catch a break and escape the long shadow of his father, a country music legend. After reluctantly accepting a gig at a local vineyard harvest festival, Jed is love-struck by the vineyard owner’s daughter, Rose (Ali Faulkner, TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN), and a romance quickly blooms. Soon after their wedding, Jed writes Rose “The Song,” which becomes a breakout hit. Milan Records: Cliff Martinez-Film Festival Gent [2015]

Milan Records will release Cliff Martinez-Film Festival Gent digitally and on CD February 17, 2015.  The album contains orchestral version of Martinez’s film themes as performed by The Brussels Philharmonic this past October as part of the Film Festival Gent and World Soundtrack Awards concert.  Conductor Dirk Brossé orchestrated the recording.

“For most of his films, Martinez created a rather spare, simple and expressive sound,” described Patrick Duynslaegher, Artistic Director Film Fest Gent.  “The combination of the original electronic instrumentation with a full-blown symphonic orchestra adds additional layers of complex musical duality to Martinez’s ambiguous and organic music.”

Intrada: Jaws the Revenge [1987-2015] - Michael Small

In 1987, Universal Pictures presented the fourth and final installment in the Jaws series -- Jaws the Revenge -- this time with Michael Small along to provide the musical thrills.  MCA Records announced a soundtrack LP at the time of the film’s opening, but after the box office proved disappointing the LP was canceled.  Now Intrada has rectified the score's absence on CD with this premiere release of the complete score.  Small blended the original shark theme by John Williams with a considerable amount of newly composed music.  Small begins his Jaws The Revenge score with his own adaptation of Williams’ classic Jaws theme, a particularly fierce rendition adding a musical sound effect like a monstrous roar.  Ellen Brody is the principal character now, and Small gives her a strong, emotional main theme, played in more delicate versions early in the score but heard in a forceful rendition at the story’s turning point, when she heads out to take on the shark by herself.  Small also supplies a taunting, repetitive motif to suggest Ellen’s growing obsession with the shark, suggesting an unseen, menacing force just out of view. He closes the score on an end title featuring a vigorous version of the Williams theme, which brings the Jaws scores full circle.

Much of the new music by Small ended up on the cutting room floor and several cues were dialed out before completion. Still others were simply re-tracked into scenes for which they weren’t originally intended. Intrada was given access to the complete ¼″ 15 ips two-track stereo session mixes vaulted by Universal Pictures in pristine condition. These master elements not only allowed Intrada to present every cue in the manner recorded by Small but also to include alternate print takes of several cues.

Jaws the Revenge begins with Ellen Brody still living on Amity Island following the death of her husband. She blames his fatal heart attack on the stress from his battles with the sharks that plagued their island a decade earlier. Her youngest son, Sean, has followed his father into Amity’s police department, but after he is brutally killed by another shark, Ellen flies to the Bahamas to recover from the trauma and visit her other son, Michael. Ellen begins to believe that the shark that killed her son has followed the family to the Bahamas and Ellen soon sets off to go mano a mano with the predator.

Disney/Intrada: Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure - Joel McNeely

For the 2009 sequel, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, composer Joel McNeely returns to the helm as the series composer, composing a large-scale score for massive orchestra performed by Hollywood's finest, plus chorus, Celtic violinist and ethnic woodwinds (performed by McNeely himself).  A song album was initially released in 2009, but did not feature any of McNeely's score. This releases focuses primarily on the epic, soaring and rambunctious score, but also includes several of the film's vocals, including If You Believe, Fairy Tale Theatre, The Gift of a Friend, and Where the Sunbeam Plays.

In this second installment, Pixie Hollow has entrusted Tinker Bell (Mae Whitman) with ensuring their magical moonstone keeps their pixie dust in plentiful supply.  Where Tink goes, trouble follows and she accidentally breaks the moonstone.  Only an enchanted mirror and some assistance from pestering pixie Terence (Jesse McCartney) can help Tink get the moonstone back together..

DEBUG – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on February 24th and on CD March 10, 2015. The album features original music by Timothy Williams (WALKING WITH THE ENEMY, RED SKY). 

“Debug is a sci-fi horror set on a prison ship in space,” said Williams.  “I knew that the score was going to be primarily electronic, but I loved the idea of using an orchestra for its organic quality, and then mutilating the pristine recordings, through reversing, pitch shifting, filtering, unusual delays and falling reverbs.  David Hewlett [director] and I have been friends since we were about 5 years old! So when I suggested 'reversed orchestra' for some of the score with electronics and 'processed brass', he didn't do what some directors might do, which is fire me on the spot!”

DEBUG is about six young computer hackers sent to work on a derelict space freighter, who are forced to match wits with a vengeful artificial intelligence that would kill to be human.

GIRLHOUSE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on February 10th and on CD March 10, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by tomandandy (THE STRANGERS, THE MOTHMAN PROPEHCIES) along with an original track, performed by Slaine, who portrays Loverboy in the film.

GIRLHOUSE follows a beautiful young college student who, needing money for tuition, moves into a house that streams content to an X-rated website. After a deranged fan hacks in to determine the house's location, she finds herself in a terrifying fight for her life.
 

ENTER THE DANGEROUS MIND – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on February 10, 2015.  The album features the film’s original score by Reza Safinia (FILLY BROWN, MERCY) and the songs “In My Head” (Reza Safinia feat. Nothing But Thieves) and “Broken Soul” (Reza Safinia).

CONtv, the new on-demand streaming service targeted to Comic Con fans, has announced its third original series with “MY MORPHING LIFE,” helmed by fan favorite television and digital star Jason David Frank (“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”).  Based on Frank’s popular YouTube web series, “MY MORPHING LIFE” will be a featured part of CONtv’s original programming slate.  The new network from Cinedigm (NASDAQ: CIDM) and Wizard World will launch in late February 2015, with the new series set to premiere in early April.

Come Visit... The Boy Next Door [2015] - Randy Edelman and Nathan Barr

Back Lot Music has released the digital soundtrack album for The Boy Next Door, Universal Pictures’ psychological thriller starring Jennifer Lopez, it was announced today. The soundtrack features 18 new score cues by co-composers Randy Edelman and Nathan Barr, and Varèse Sarabande Records will release the physical soundtrack album on February 17. The film releases in theaters nationwide on January 23.

MUCK Scares Off Heavyweight Competition!!

 

Paramount Pictures isn't going to compete with MUCK for horror fans bucks this Friday the 13th, March 2015. The studio just announced that they are moving the release of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension back some several months.

The gods of horror smiled upon the MUCK franchise when the perfect release date of Friday the 13th, March 2015 was set. The date is significant not only because MUCK stars Kane Hodder, known for his iconic role as Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th film franchise, but also because the horrific events of MUCK take place entirely on St. Patrick's Day, yielding the perfect storm in the month of March for MUCK.

MUCK director Steve Wolsh "wasn't afraid" when Paramount announced that the 6th entry of the Paranormal series would open against his film. Now, many months later, we find out that it won't. Why does the Paranormal franchise suddenly have cold feet? MUCK may have simply scared them off. With a successful MUCK: Kickstarter campaign having recently funded the MUCK prequel, MUCK pre-orders piling up, and an upcoming premiere at the Playboy Mansion, one can't deny all the positive buzz surrounding MUCK. Has David spooked Goliath?

COMPOSER/MUSIC PRODUCER TEAM BRIAN TRIFON AND BRIAN LEE WHITE SCORE DOUBLE FINE'S MASSIVE CHALICE

Composer duo Brian Trifon and Brian Lee White, aka music producers Finishing Move, have created a unique, modern fantasy score for Massive Chalice, the single player tactical strategy game from the creators of Psychonauts, Brütal Legend, and Iron Brigade. The Massive Chalice Original Soundtrack is now available for streaming on Soundcloud and will be released on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Google Play and Xbox Music on February 2.

The game's development team at Double Fine Productions approached Brian Trifon and Brian Lee White, best known in the recording industry as purveyors of melodic acoustic manipulation and heavy electronic synths, to create an original sound for their game that would transcend a traditional orchestral palette for a more unconventional and experimental soundtrack specific to the individual artistic vision for Massive Chalice.

"The game doesn't rely on standard fantasy tropes like elves, dwarves, or dragons and I knew that I wanted a unique soundtrack that would match the originality of the game," explains Brad Muir, Project Lead for Massive Chalice. "We relied on the music to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the game, and Finishing Move really understood what we were going for. The score quickly became the core of the game's emotional content for us as we developed the game."

La-La Land Records: The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power - Geoff Zanelli

La-La Land Records and Backlot Music present the cd soundtrack album for The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power, Universal Picture’s action/adventure feature starring Victor Webster and Lou Ferrigno. This massive orchestral soundtrack features 20 new score cues by Emmy Award-winning composer Geoff Zanelli (“Into the West” miniseries).

Zanelli has become a standout in the film and television scoring industry, garnering accolades and recognition for his work since going solo after numerous collaborations with Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Zanelli had a fond experience working with director Mike Elliot, saying, “What gives this movie its identity and sets it apart is the way it uses humor to challenge the clichés and gender stereotypes that can keep a fantasy film from feeling fresh, or fun, or original.” With respect to the score, he goes on to say, “I tried to imbue the score with gravitas and play to the epic nature of the story. But whenever I’d start to get pretentious or too self-important, my director [Elliot] would say something like, ‘Geoff, please don’t forget that there are two grown women in tattered clothes having a cage fight in this movie.’ There’s a dragon, too.”
