One song from the group "The National" called "Rains Of Castomere" is very moody, but fits to the whole score nicely. His work on the first score was great, so in my words you don't break what isn't broken... Nice Job!

If you love the show on ABC, you will love the score by Mark Isham and if you are a fan of Isham... you will love the score. Guess what I am a fan of both, so I will drift away into the story book setting as you are whisked away to other place another time. Mark Isham makes this beautiful... seamless to enchant your senses and makes you want to listen. I would have to say again, if you watch the show you will be able to remember the score and Isham gives us that.

With this premiere release of the original film recording of Henry Mancini's score to the 1963 film Charade, Intrada helps Universal Pictures celebrate their centennial with one of Mancini's most famous film scores.  Scored in the same period as Hatari!, Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Pink Panther, Mancini was able to turn out another hit tune —both instrumental and song versions (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer) of his main theme that made the Billboard charts. And the film offered ample opportunity for pop and novelty source music, most of which found their way onto Mancini’s original re-recorded Charade album.

That left Mancini’s dramatic underscore MIA—and as this new album shows, the composer’s genuine film music is every bit as distinctive and entertaining as his pop tunes. Playing against Maurice Binder’s whirligig animation patterns, Mancini’s main title tune for cimbalom over Latin percussion rhythms establishes a mood of mystery and intrigue before strings sweeten it into pure romance. Mancini’s melody plays as a wistful, lonely love theme at several points in the film, providing a common thread throughout the score.

For this album, Intrada had access to the complete mono elements stored in Universal's vaults. The elements were in perfect condition providing a crisp and detailed sound.

Charade places the glamorous duo of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in Paris, in the middle of a suspenseful, romantic mystery. Hepburn plays Regina Lambert, a bored Parisian wife unhappy with her diplomat husband— until she returns home from a vacation to find he’s been killed. Grant is Peter Joshua, a handsome British agent who wants to help Regina unravel the mystery of her husband’s death—or does he? It turns out the late Mr. Lambert stole a quarter of a million dollars from a WWII payroll and now his three menacing accomplices (played by Ned Glass, George Kennedy and James Coburn) are convinced Regina knows where the money is hidden. Just whose side is Joshua really on?

Along with Breakfast At Tiffany’s, The Pink Panther and Charade, Hatari! is generally regarded as one of Henry Mancini’s all-time most popular film score recordings. In fact, Hatari! ushered in the legendary “Baby Elephant Walk,” a swaggering tune for clarinet with orchestra written for the movie that instantly became a wildly popular hit on its own. In addition to their lofty commercial success, another thing these albums had in common was in how they represented their respective scores. In each case, Mancini re-recorded roughly a half hour of music, adapting the major themes and easy listening-style music into albums accessible to wide audiences. The actual film soundtracks, including the more dramatic underscoring, were never made available. With this premiere release of the film soundtrack to Hatari!, Intrada presents to new audiences the complete score as Mancini actually recorded it for the film, including the original version of “Baby Elephant Walk,” heard both in its familiar setting for the parade of elephants scene and in dramatic variations for the final chase sequence.

Hatari! was recorded on stereo three-track 35mm magnetic film in 1962, the majority of which were transferred by Paramount onto 2’’ archival tape in the 1990s. To present the complete score, restoration engineer Chris Malone has added otherwise unavailable cues from several additional sources.

John Wayne stars as Sean Mercer in this African adventure, searching the African landscape for wild animals to fill zoo orders.  Mercer's group includes "the Indian" (Bruce Cabot), a womanizing sharpshooter who is gored by a rhino.  While the Indian is in the hospital, a named Swiss zoo photographer Anna Maria D'Allesandro (Elsa Martinelli) shows up  -- and Mercer tries to send her packing from day one.  More trouble with rhinos ensue, and D'Allesandro starts collecting baby elephants along the way, giving Mercer much more than he bargained for.

LEGEND is a visually stunning fantasy/adventure that takes place in a mythical forest inhabited by fairies, goblins, unicorns and mortals, where an epic battle of Good versus Evil begins to unfold. Tom Cruise plays Jack, a peasant boy in love,  perhaps tragically, with the beautiful princess Lili (Mia Sara). Jack and Lili become pawns in a much larger game as the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) exploits their relationship to reveal the location of the remaining members of the purest race in the world, the last pair of Unicorns. He dispatches his goblins to kill the Unicorns and claim their horns, so that he may claim their mystical power and bring about an everlasting age of Darkness. Jack finds himself forced to undertake a quest, to save Lili, try to prevent the death of the last Unicorn and defeat the plans of the Lord Of Darkness, or the sun will rise no more.  

This is a wonderful release it has always been one of my favorite scores and with very uplifting songs that made this one tough find in the collecting world. Brandon K. Verrett captures the mood and the essences in every note, it's like listening or seeing the film for the very first time. The whole package from score to design is just amazing and you too can relive your fantasy just by opening your ears.

Let me start of and say this is one of the coolest people I have met in a very long time, I got confused on his location of Copenhagen, Denmark. I thought he was in L.A. and that caused a weird start to this interview and I am glad we fixed this... it was a very cool chat. - How did you get started in the field of music and how did that lead you to composing?
Soren Hyldgaard: My parents - very romantically! - met through music, he was a bassist and my mother, though at the time not performing professionally, was a singer. So I grew in an atmosphere influenced by tones from the guitar, the double-bass, percussion and song – though curiously enough, I never played any of these instruments.

On the other hand, at an early age I immersed himself with keyboards of all types; ’electric organs’ were the hip names and ‘synthesizers’ in those days. I went with my mom to see “The Sound of Music”, fell in love with all the girls in the movie, went home and could immediately play Edelweiss and Do-Re-Mi. I had, still have though less sharpened, the gift of ‘photographing’ the music in my mind.

Perhaps the cathartic flash came when I, as a young child in the early 70s, was enthralled with “The Bride of Frankenstein”. Karloff’s performance moved me deeply, but I was even more taken with Franz Waxman’s haunting themes. I memorized the motifs for the monster and the bride and kept playing them on the piano, never forgetting the themes. You could say I came full circle when, in the early 1990s, I worked with the Silva Screen label to restore the complete Waxman score from “The Bride of Frankenstein” and releasing it on CD. This was my first professional job with film music and symphonic recording.


- What are you working on now currently and what have you completed?
Soren Hyldgaard: My latest feature scoring is “Something the Air”, a romantic comedy in the “Love Actually” vein. In the credits I dedicate the music to the late John Barry -- one of the truly romanticists in cinema music. When you hear my themes and how they’re arranged on the new album, it becomes very clear how Barry influenced my writing. And stylistically it’s a deliberate homage to him.

Currently I am polishing a commissioned piece for the concert hall, a work that is slated to open at the famous Tivoli gardens in June of this year.In this year’s advent of H.M Queen Margrethe’s forty years on the throne. My piece commemorates the history of the ancient Danish kings and some of the dramatic incidents throughout history. There is a fair chance that this music, along with my very popular Hans Christian Suite (for Symphonic Wind Orchestra) will get out there, as I am published through the Hal Leonard Corporation in North America and other continents.

I like this occasional switching between film scoring with its strict deadlines, and the free-styling of live music where the scope, length and style is more or less one hundred percent up the composer. Plus, I orchestrate every note myself! - a luxury not always feasible in film writing.


- In your circle of composers who do you work with and what is the best part of your contributions?
Soren Hyldgaard: We do have a strong circle of film composers here in Scandinavia, only recently united to discuss business, working conditions and cool gadgets. But we are mostly individualists, working by ourselves. However, I have a good friend and gifted colleague, George Keller, with whom I have worked on several projects -- co-writing, sketching, orchestration etc.

- Who inspires you musically and who do you listen to?
Soren Hyldgaard:To me, it’s always been the music/the movies/ - the art, the works more than the artist, if you will. I like this piece by Prokofiev, that painting by Magritte, that film by Hitchcock. That said, I do tend to listen more to Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Mozart... I am a Korngold aficionado, but only when I am in that lush, late-romantic mood. Give me Bernard Herrmann anytime! He is certainly one of the most personal and influential composers in movie music. I wish he could be here to enjoy the current adoration and respect for his music!


- Out of all your released work, which gives you the best and feeling of accomplishment?
Soren Hyldgaard: Of my film scores, I do have some pets -- and the selections on the new “Eye of the Eagle” CD reflect a great deal of these. Looking back, my best experiences have less to do with the actual music than with the circumstances surrounding the projects -- how enjoyable or not the process was, how my rapport was with the director, etc. etc. The recent, aforementioned “Something the Air” was a rewarding experience. The director, first-timer Michael Asmussen, loves music, loves romance and strings. Everyone loves a collaborator who cares, who expects, who respects and who give you space. “Tommy and the Wildcat”, the European Disney movie as I call it, is another favorite of mine, and for similar reasons. And then, with all the hard labor and crazy cue sheets, I love animation; “The Jester Till”, “Help I’m a Fish” and others... I’d like to do more in this field, but never more than one every second year! Perhaps my guilty pleasure is doing music for horror films. Just like romance, it’s a genre that direly needs music to work!

- Walk us throughout a typical day?
Soren Hyldgaard: A typical day can be either 6-9 hours of actual writing (doing sample programming in Logic Pro or notes-on-paper-scoring using Finale), or it can be no music writing at all but doing meetings, spotting sessions, communicating, editing, wheeling and dealing. Or, a combination of the two ‘extremes’. I remember many years ago how I wondered about Bill Conti stating in an interview that, out of his total work schedule he rarely spends more than ten to twenty percent of his time actually composing music!

This is a the score to a very underrated film by the great composer Georges Delerue and I am happy to be able to add this to my collection. It has been out of print for some time now, but I finally was able to find it... What you may not be aware of is that Varese Sarabande has been releasing scores for over thirty wonderful years and feature some of the greatest scores/soundtracks. Some are released as Club Titles, this month they are beginning to re-release some of their greatest titles and many that are out of print.

Based on the epic graphic novel by John Bergin, From Inside is the story of Cee, a young pregnant woman who finds herself on a damaged train slowly transcribing its way across a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape.  Flood, war, starvation and a plague of death threaten the train’s passengers.  Cee struggles through these dangers while coping with the memory of her lost husband and the imminent birth of her child.  

A post-apocalyptic landscape needs a dark score.  Composer Brett Smith found this a particular challenge.  He said, “I had to somehow convey the weight of the world, misery and despair that Cee had never been exposed to.” 

Heartbeat from your inner child while trying to escape from a dream, sorry I am still on Mickey Strange time, but this is a dark score... no mistake. Kind of a Hellraiser feel where you do feel trapped, twisting yourself into a state of the unknown. Brett Smith is in "Caul" and this might be his first venture in composing, but I am definitely intrigued.

This is one of the things that comes across the internet into my email box, I am like okay here is another voice that wants to be heard. I listen with my mind elsewhere while doing other things in the music in the background and here I have to say... this caught my attention. As I was quoted to saying "Mickey Strange... it is a great sound that I am still trying to figure out the style... Bowie stuck in a vacuumed nightmare bubble, in the middle of a dream... the kind you don't want to wake up"... I mean it. It was a treat to my ears and I am not even sure the name of the album as I think it is just a collection. I liked it, very simple!

In small-town Texas, the local mortician strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when he kills her, he goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she's alive.

With the amount of films that come out that are complete rip offs of other films... well here might be another one. I am not sure, it looks very entertaining as Jack Black becomes the angel of... DEATH? Just your average guy with an extraordinaire soundtrack with simple feel good music, that will pluck your heartstrings... even though it's most likely about murder that only the angel of... DEATH could bring!

One Billion Dollars...

The Avengers Reaches $1 Billion Worldwide

With official grosses reporting on Monday, it's official—The Avengers has joined the fabled $1 billion worldwide box office club. The movie reached this level on its 19th day in theaters, which ties the record-breaking pace of Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (though The Avengers was only playing in the U.S. for ten of those days). It currently ranks 12th on the all-time worldwide chart with $1.000.4 billion, and by the end of next weekend it will move up to fourth place behind Avatar, Titanic and Deathly Hallows Part 2.

"We're obviously thrilled with the global success of The Avengers," said Robert Iger, Disney's Chairman and CEO, in a press release. "It's a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come."

The Avengers is Disney's fifth billion-dollar movie following Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.044 billion) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024 billion). No other studio has more than two billion-dollar movies.

Across its 54 markets, The Avengers added $93.8 million this weekend to bring its foreign total to $627.3 million. That's the highest overseas gross ever for a comic book adaptation, and it ranks 16th among all titles. The movie's top market so far is the United Kingdom with $65.1 million, and China ($50.4 million), Mexico ($49.6 million), Brazil ($44.4 million) and South Korea ($41.5 million) make up the Top Five. It's only major market remaining is Japan, where it opens in August, and there's a good chance The Avengers ultimately winds up close to $800 million in overseas revenue.

It is visually a CGI festival, but at times it was the same footage over and over again. Interviews were interesting, but lacking in something not wanting to fast forward.  If you are into Alien stuff, I would recommend it... if not duck and cover. 4/10

MOVIE: My first love for a movie that I can remember that I was very young and that is Disney's "Pete's Dragon" [1977] and I felt a genuine compassion for Elliot the dragon. To me he was not animated he was like an invisible friend we all had, here it just less invisible to the town of Passamaquoddy.

MUSIC: With the amount of scores/soundtracks/music I have it was a very difficult choice to pick one, so I am going with that is score music that changed my ears forever. Now I was going to say "Pete's Dragon" again, cause right after the movie my parents bought me the Album [LP]. This had heavy rotation in my kid years, but there is one score/soundtrack that is that one that made me the music fan I am today... "Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi" [1983]. John Williams is... well he is just that, one of the composers that will be forever remembered.


BOOK: I remember reading only a few books and Disney was one thing I related to so I read many of their releases, but it was always "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" and "Herbie Goes to Bananas" I went back to time and time again. Boy I was a wholesome kid, I wonder what happened... it must of been that first love... when I became the rebel.






LOVE: Now I am not sure if this counts because I have loved so many women in my life that I don't want to hurt any of my ladies [say that in a deep voice]. I am going to go with the first crush I had and I go back to the kid again, I think it's safe. Okay the girl I remember was unfortunately gone before I knew... sadness here. I was crushing on Darla Jean Hood from the "Our Gang" or "Little Rascals", I know weird huh. I was like four years old and my dad let us watch the skits and how was I to know.

Steve Jablonsky is one of the new breed of composers that will rock the world's ear, as each new score is released. He is old school with a modern spin as he will pay homage to the masters, while putting a edge to his own work. I am not sure about this film "Battleship" because they have to make you see Rhianna in the trailer from artist to actress. That is what bothers me about the trailer, I really don't understand her career and media attention. Some of you might like her style, I just don't get it... but I am one opinion. Here in this place we talk about the music and when we talk music we are talking about the talented Steve Jablonsky. So if you like his music from "Transformers" to "Gears Of War II"... you will enjoy "Battleship".

Six Strings with... Guillermo Guareschi


So I wanted to introduce you to one of the Howlin' Wolf Record's latest composers Guillermo Guareschi and the release of "Phase 7". It happens to be the seventh release and the title makes it connect well as does the score to the film. This gritty electronic score will be enjoyed by all as it tweaks your senses and is very pulse pounding. So I wanted to introduce the man behind the score and let you get to know what makes him stand above the rest. It was a complete pleasure to able to talk with him and wanted to thank him again...

Bio: Born in Buenos Aires, Guillermo Guareschi discovered his passion for music while studying architecture at the age of 20. At that time he began to study classical counterpoint and composition, piano and guitar, jazz, tango and folklore. He moved to Boston where he graduated from Berklee College Of Music with honors, specializing in film scoring and orchestration. Guillermo then moved to Los Angeles where he won several scholarships including the prestigious BMI Film Scoring Competition award in 1995. Earle Hagen, Mike Post, Dave Spear and Fred Karlin personally taught him advanced scoring techniques and orchestration. He wrote the music for many successful Argentinian TV series such as: Los Simuladores, Montecristo, Hermanos y Detectives and for the blockbuster feature films Tiempo de Valientes and Musica en Espera, both nominated "Condor de Plata" for Best Score.
   With orchestral works such as "Esferas" and "Random Walk," written for full symphony orchestra, Guillermo is recognized as an emerging contemporary composer in Argentina and abroad.
   His rock band "LOBO" was featured in the prime time drama Montecristo and the movie Los Paranoicos. Guillermo is currently composing for films, television, and orchestra. He works from his studio in Buenos Aires for local and international projects. 


How did you get started in the field of music and how did that lead you to composing?
Guillermo Guareschi: I was studying architecture at age 20 when I met a student there that happens to play guitar, I liked the idea of learning an instrument so I picked up a Spanish guitar… from that moment everything changed. Six months later I was writing my own songs, no more architecture, music brought a meaning to my life. At first I wanted to be a rock star (probably like everybody else) but then I realize that to be prepared as a musician I needed to study composition, counterpoint, traditional harmony, orchestration, etc. So I grabbed my luggage, sold my guitars and piano and went to study to Berklee College of Music in Boston.


What are you working on now currently and what have you completed?
Guillermo Guareschi: This year I decided to focus on my postponed projects and goals, which are; a piano solo release cd, a modern tango Cd I’m working on, preparing a show live with musicians, and a bunch of electronic designs and ideas I’ve been working for many years. Later project I did was a black & white silent movie with a lot of tango music. Loved that project. I used to joked and tell the directors I’ve worked with, that movies should be mainly images and music, because  Argentinian films loves to go for extended dialogues, so with this silent movie I get what I wanted, just images and music.

In your circle of composers who do work with and what is the best part of your contributions?
Guillermo Guareschi: I work alone in my projects, just enjoy the whole process of it, composing, orchestrating, recording the instruments as well as playing guitar, keyboards, bass and percussion. I will like to work with great orchestrators, they know their stuff and can contribute great ideas to the project.


Who inspires you musically and who do you listen to?
Guillermo Guareschi: Great music inspires me. There is so much good music to listen to. Talking about classical; I got a lot of inspiration and learning from the works of Ravel and Debussy. Morricone, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Herrmann are the main ones that I listened much for great film scores. But at the end of the day I listen to some Beatles of course.

Out of all your released work, which gives you the best feeling of accomplishment?
Guillermo Guareschi: It’s hard to choose one because each work has something that I considered special, but I can say which type of scores are the one that I enjoyed more and those are the projects where I’ve had total freedom in the composition, there I feel very relaxed and can expressed myself directly.


Walk us throughout a typical day?
Guillermo Guareschi: Wake up early, drink a squeezed grapefruit and orange juice, then answer some mails. I spent most of the day in the studio. I organized my day in small compartments, one dedicated to compose, next one to play guitar, then designing my projects and jumping between each one so I don’t get burned with one thing, play more guitar, fine tune later mixes and compositions, get mail and answer them, listening to music, then go back again and give some more time to each project. This philosophy is the one that I like the most so I don’t get obsessed with one thing, spending weeks and weeks in it, I can be more objective with a clearer mind this way.

Bonus: You can ask me a question or tell us something you would like us to know about you or anything you want?
Guillermo Guareschi: Music is changing these days as well the style of filming and editing. It looks like everything is more about the looks and not the substance, then the final works starts to look similar to each other, things are becoming standardized. Seems that people in the industry is afraid of the outcome so they look for proven ways, missing the point. The public is looking for new things, those new things are the ones that take people out of the tedious routine and accelerated life we lived in. Of course going for new ideas can be risky but, aren’t we here to take chances?

Beyond The Grave
 Shot in the city of Porto Alegre, south of Brazil, BEYOND THE GRAVE is an art-house mixture of road movie, spaghetti western and different horror sub-genres such as zombie and black magic. "I tried to bring in everything I had learned about cinema and humanity from the beginning of my conscious life till the moment of locking the final cut.  I think we should be respectful of genre, of course, but a rigid tone is more important than a rigid genre. We’re in an age where amalgamations are common nature in art. Cinema shouldn’t be excluded", believes the Brazilian filmmaker. 
 
I was approached by producer Isidoro B. Guggiana to look at this film "Beyond The Grave" [Porto dos Mortos] and I had a good feeling about this film and it turned out to be a great one. This Brazilian film set in the apocalyptic future where there is good and bad that is it, one man's fight to keep the peace. Though that peace comes with a price... that is everything. I felt it had a Road Warrior meets Dust Devil with a dabble of any of the Living Dead films. It is focused on the vigilante on his search for the Dark Rider to fill the void that made the world what it is...destruction. It finds itself to be on the verge of being a cult classic as I find a very strong message throughout the entire film. It has received several awards nationally and internationally and deserves everyone... If you get a chance to see this film, I suggest you do.

Very moving piece Mark Kilian I wasn't really sure on this score as I thought it might have been a drama about love and all that love stuff. I was wrong it is a quick paced suspense brought to us by the talented Mark Kilian who has impressed us with other works that include; Tsotsi, Rendition, Traitor, and The Ward. So don't get confused this is another fantastic piece from a Lakeshore Records and a composer you should all know by now.

Bobby Johnston does a great job building on your fear as people enter your home uninvited, you turn and there... they... are. It is a wonderful piece that is beautiful in places, then grabs you... shakes you and puts you right back in your seat. Another riveting piece from Bobby Johnston as we head out into the darkness with the sweetness of mother's theme rattling in our brains.

Get The Gringo an Icon Production starring Mel Gibson, is an explosive action film infused with dark comedy directed by Adrian Grunberg and produced by Mel Gibson, Bruce Davey and Stacy Perskie. The soundtrack features original music by Antonio Pinto with songs by Ten Years After and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Okay, Gibson may be having some personal life altering problems, this not change that he is still a talented actor for over three decades. So having said that this score has a very strong Spanish influence, but the title gives that away so no secret there. Antonio Pinto tells his story in a tender yet sparks of flashing lights and guitar strength that makes the whole score work. Add the few tracks from Ten Years After and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs... you will feel the same I did, satisfied.

Let's Give Mel Gibson a break, what do you need another Lethal Weapon?

This film "The Cabin In The Woods" finally gets the full release and Varese Sarabande gets the honor to release and what a fine release it is. David Julyan has composed several horror scores and knows how to push our inner scare button... does it well. It is dark at times on top of very elegant... but don't sit back as it builds to what you want and that is to be terrified. Screaming strings and crashing cymbals starts to ring in your head as you wonder if you also might be stuck in the cabin in the woods.
