Six Strings with Atli Orvarsson [Interview]

So it gives me the greatest pleasure to share the works of one talented composer, who's year has included a handful of great scores. Of course we have covered them all throughout the year from many of our sponsors and music labels such as "MediaScore Media", "Varese Sarabande" and "La-La Land Records".

I would recommend all these to have in your collection (click links):

I wanted to thank Atli Orvarsson, Stefan and Monica for all their help getting this put together and all the labels like "MediaScore Media", "Varese Sarabande" and "La-La Land Records" for releasing such great music... it's always a pleasure!
-Jeremy [HWR: OLM]

---------------------------------------------------

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: How did you get started in the field of music and how did that lead you to composing?

Atli Orvarsson: There was music all around me when I was growing up, my dad’s a professional accordion player, my mom sang in the church choir, brothers played in bands etc. so you could say that music is the family business!  I started studying music when I was 5 years old and by the time I was in my early teens I started composing.  There was quite a remarkable music scene in my small hometown of Akureyri (population 16000) in Northern Iceland so I was exposed to playing all kinds of music in all kinds of ensembles,  a symphony orchestra, big band, rock band, pit orchestra in the local theatre and it’s that experience which I think led me to choosing film music later on because it’s so eclectic and obviously it’s the intersection of drama and music.

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: Please tell us about your latest score release “Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” how do find your inspiration for projects, how did you become involved and how much musical freedom did you have?

Atli Orvarsson: I was very inspired by the film the first time I saw it, so much so that I scribbled the main theme down on a piece of paper in the dark theatre!  I have known the film’s director, Harald Zwart, for some time and I actually ran into him at the premiere for another film I scored, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters where he basically offered me the gig!  We had a wonderful collaboration on this film.  He was very involved in the themes and all aspects of the scoring process but somehow managed to give me quite a bit of musical freedom at the same time.

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: If you work with other composers or music artists, whom do you work with and what is the best part of your contributions?

Atli Orvarsson: I have a several regular collaborators, e.g. my sister Hilda Örvarsdóttir sings on just about every score I make!  I have also worked with Hans Zimmer on a few of his scores and I feel like each time I work with him I learn something new.

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: Who inspires you musically and whom do you listen to [composers or music]?

Atli Orvarsson: There are so many artist/bands/composers who inspire me.  J.S. Bach was a major inspiration on this film but I could mention a few names like Pink Floyd, Maurice Ravel, Richard Wagner, Ennio Morricone and Radiohead.

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: Out of all your released work, which gives you the best feeling of accomplishment and why?

Atli Orvarsson: I think this score is definitely close to the top of my favorites because I feel that I got to really write very grand, unapologetically melodic music which I really enjoy!  I also really enjoyed making the score for a film called "The Eagle" which came out a couple of years back but that process was completely different, much more collaborative and experimental.

Jeremy [HWR: OLM]: Walk us throughout a typical day in the life of Atli Orvarsson the person and the composer?

Atli Orvarsson: I usually get up early with my wife and kids, I often drive my son to work and I’m usually in the studio at around 9:30.  Work until about 5-6 pm, go home for dinner and then back to the studio for a couple of hours.  Although, when things get really busy I sometimes shift to a schedule where I get up at 5 am and start working before it gets bright outside.  There’s something incredibly cool and productive about these wee hours!

---------------------------------------------------
Bio: Atli Örvarsson, an Icelandic film score composer. Atli’s credits include composing and orchestrating music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the Pirates of the Caribbean series. BEYOND: Two Souls - Lorne Balfe

BEYOND: Two Souls™
Featuring Music by Balfe

Released on October 8, 2013

(September 17, 2013- Los Angeles, CA) Composer Lorne Balfe (The Sweeney, Assassins Creed III video game) is proud to announce the release of the BEYOND: Two Souls™ video game soundtrack, to be released by Playstation on October 8th.

Balfe’s ability to travel between the two worlds of film and video games is a perfect fit for the upcoming Playstation® 3 release, BEYOND: Two Souls.  “Games are just the same as films.  You start off with stills or the actual artwork that’s drawn inspiration to them,” said Balfe.  “People ask is it a film or is it a game.  There is no difference, not to me.  You could sit there and watch it as a film.  The way to musically tell the story is the same process.”

Balfe is not only a highly sought-after video game composer -- he is a Grammy award winning and BAFTA nominated film composer from Inverness, Scotland.  Lorne is known for composing the scores to the Dreamworks’ animation Megamind, and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III.  Balfe earned his first Emmy nomination for the BBC and Sundance Channel mini-series Restless.

Balfe’s recent solo projects have kept him hard at work in the UK, composing for Ironclad, The Sweeney, and the upcoming films, Not Another Happy Ending (starring Karen Gillian of Doctor Who), Side by Side, the documentary Salinger, and the upcoming film, The Frozen Ground, starring John Cusack, Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens. In collaboration with composer, Rachel Portman, Lorne has just completed the music for 10×10's feature documentary, Girl Rising, directed by Academy Award nominee, Richard E. Robbins that features narration by actresses such as Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.

When he hasn’t been composing for film, Balfe has found additional footing in the video game world. In 2011, Balfe composed alongside Jesper Kyd for the game, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Music. A year later in 2012, Balfe was already hard at work composing as a solo composer for Skylanders: Giants, Assassin’s Creed III (which earned Balfe his second BAFTA nomination for Best Original Music) and Assassin’s Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington.

From the visionary mind of David Cage, director of the award-winning Heavy Rain™, comes the most powerfully emotional experience on PlayStation® 3. A singularly unique psychological action thriller delivered by A-list Hollywood performances by Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, BEYOND: Two Souls™ takes you on a thrilling journey across the globe as you play out the remarkable life of Jodie Holmes.

We are very happy with this release and the interesting story behind it, being the actors involved and the grand score that it is.

WaterTower Music: GRAVITY - Steven Price

WATERTOWER MUSIC TO RELEASE:

GRAVITY [2013]
Music By Steven Price

(September 16, 2013 – Los Angeles, CA) – WaterTower Music is proud to announce the release of the GRAVITY – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, digitally on September 17th and on CD on October 1, 2013.  GRAVITY features original music by Steven Price (THE WORLD’S END, ATTACK THE BLOCK).  The film has earned rave reviews at film festivals and screenings in advance of its October 4th release.

To accomplish the creation of music in the vacuum of space, Price needed to bridge music with sound in untraditional ways.  “From my earliest meetings with Alfonso [Cuarón, director] it was clear the score in GRAVITY would play a crucial and expanded role,” said Price.  “With no sound in space, the music was integral to underscore the emotional journey.  The music is occasionally abstract, often melodic, but always very intricate, complex and textural.  Alfonso and I wanted the score to blur the line between electronic and organic sounds, and there was a lot of experimentation involved in finding the harmonic and sonic language that felt emotionally right and tonally gelled with the amazing visuals.”

Towing that line came naturally for composer Steven Price.  He is a composer and musician who previously worked as an award-winning music editor. He has written additional music for films, including PIRATE RADIO and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, collaborating with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Price has also written music for several productions on major UK television networks as well as advertising campaigns in both the UK and the U.S.  His accolades include awards for his original ATTACK THE BLOCK score. His score for THE WORLD’S END was released earlier in 2013.

For GRAVITY, Price continues, “Alfonso was always very determined that the soundtrack be immersive.  As you sit in the theatre, the score literally moves around you.  Elements come and go, pulsate and transform, and reflect the journey onscreen in a way that will hopefully add to the total cinematic experience of the film.”

Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (THE BLIND SIDE) and George Clooney (SYRIANA) star in GRAVITY, a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.  The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (CHILDREN OF MEN).

Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command.  But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes.  The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue.  As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.  But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

GRAVITY was written by Alfonso Cuarón & Jonás Cuarón, and produced by Alfonso Cuarón and David Heyman (the HARRY POTTER films).  Chris deFaria, Nikki Penny and Stephen Jones served as executive producers.

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents an Esperanto Filmoj/Heyday Films Production, an Alfonso Cuarón Film, GRAVITY.  Opening October 4, 2013, it will be released in 3D and 2D and IMAX®, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

The GRAVITY – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, from WaterTower Music, will be available digitally on September 17th and on CD October 1, 2013.

Intrada: RAGING ANGELS [1995] - TERRY PLUMERI

RAGING ANGELS [1995]
Music Composed and Conducted by TERRY PLUMERI
INTRADA Signature Edition 1050

The 1995 horror film Raging Angels is filled with an atmosphere of churning and slashing evil that fights intensely to triumph over the innocence of a teenage couple. The film's foreboding undercurrent inspired composer Terry Plumeri to establish this evil from the opening note of the main title and further escalating this darkness through a gothic and expansive choir, superimposed over rhythmically driven instrumental voices. In contrast to this foreboding environment, Plumeri chose a less complex musical setting for the love theme associated with the characters of Chris and Lila. The accompaniment is string orchestra, with the solo voice of acoustic guitar, beautifully played by Federico Ramos. Another notable performance in the score is that of French actress, Arielle Dombasle (Megan), whose beautiful voice appears performing a traditional demonic incantation from the 15th century.

The story of Raging Angels centers on floundering musician Chris D’Amico (Sean Patrick Flanery), who has wrestled with the demons of alcoholism and a rocky relationship with girlfriend Lila (Monet Mazur). Things get even more complicated when she auditions to sing backup for Gramercy (Michael Paré), a fast-rising rock star and spokesperson for the Coalition for World Unity. This cult-like organization promotes a future built upon a single government—made up of the wisest people humanity has to offer. Sounds good, doesn't it?

Intrada: THE WHITE DAWN - HENRY MANCINI

THE WHITE DAWN[1974]
Music Composed and Conducted by HENRY MANCINI
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 253

The White Dawn was a film composer’s dream because there were so many
open sequences, with no sound but the wind.
There was little dialogue, no cars crashing or people slamming doors
to get in the way of the music.  --Henry Mancini

For the 1974 Paramount film The White Dawn, composer Henry Mancini composed one of his most unique scores, creating an engrossing experience that is by turns both lyrical and savage. Woodwinds predominate, with flutes bringing an earthy, mystical quality. He uses reeds, often dissonant and coming from the orchestra’s lower register, to ominous effect. When bowed strings appear, they usually accompany the character of Daggett, emphasizing his romantic outlook on the world. Brass, when not in a seafaring vein, typically convey aggression and hostility. In addition to the ever-present drums, Mancini makes frequent use of mallet percussion, and enhances the score’s dreamlike character with electronics and instruments such as autoharp and waterphone. Two additional themes are of particular importance:the first is a gentle, almost childlike tune that seems to represent innocence and joy and the second is a fragile love theme.

For this release, Intrada had access to the complete score in mono stored in perfect condition and presented here in its debut. Previously only a handful of selections had been rerecorded by Mancini, a selection of which was integrated into the score to The Right Stuff.

The White Dawn tells the tale of three American whalers, shipwrecked in 1896 off the coast of Northern Canada, who are nursed back to health and taken in by a group of nomadic Eskimos. Billy (Warren Oates) is ornery and resentful, thinking only of escape and exploitation. Daggett (Timothy Bottoms) winds up embracing the native culture, and falls in love with a young woman named Neevee (Pilitak). Portagee (Louis Gossett Jr.) is somewhere in between. Eskimo leader Sarkak freely provides the men with food, shelter and women. But this foundation gradually erodes. Cultural differences widen into major rifts. As the tensions begin to boil over, the story ends in a shocking episode of violence.

Jordan), a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Decca: Salinger [2013] - Lorne Balfe

Salinger [2013]
Music by: Lorne Balfe

Digitally September 3rd
Physical CD Available September 17th On Decca

SALINGER, Directed By Shane Salerno,

Opens September 6, 2013

September 3, 2013 (New York, NY) -- Lorne Balfe, the Grammy Award-winning and BAFTA nominated film composer, heightens the intrigue and mystery of the highly anticipated film, SALINGER with his haunting score. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on Decca is available September 3rd at all digital partners including iTunes, followed by a physical release on September 17th. SALINGER, a Weinstein Company film directed and produced by Shane Salerno, opens in theatres on September 6th. The companion Simon & Schuster book co-authored by Salerno and David Shields, SALINGER, was released September 3rd.

Director Shane Salerno contributed a thoughtful liner note in the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack package. There he explains, “I was extremely fortunate to have Lorne serve as the composer of Salinger. He is the only person I ever wanted for the job.” He adds, “Lorne’s work has become an integral part of the film, creating emotional themes, rhythms, moods and grace notes that are as important as any scene, photograph, or story in the film. It is a score as complex as Salinger himself and required a composer with extraordinary sensitivity and range.”

Additional notes in the soundtrack are contributed by Balfe himself. The composer explains, “to have been invited to be a part of Salinger was an honor.” Writing the perfect musical backdrop for SALINGER was no easy task. Balfe explains, “Because of the array of emotions to musically compliment in Salinger – not to mention the decades Salinger’s story spanned – it was a very complicated job for a composer. The secretive nature of the film, though exciting, also made scoring the film particularly difficult. Even during scoring there were numerous scenes that I was not allowed to see.”

WaterTower Music: Prisoners [2013] - Johann Johannssen

PRISONERS SOUNDTRACK TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 17
FEATURES NEW MUSIC BY ACCLAIMED
ICELANDIC COMPOSER JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON

Released By: WATERTOWER MUSIC

“Icelandic composer and keyboardist Jóhann Jóhannsson’s most significant works have been film scores, a context well suited to his artful blend of contemporary classical, electronica, and indie pop” – The New Yorker

(September 13, 2013 – Los Angeles, CA) – WaterTower Music announced today the September 17 release of the soundtrack to the Alcon Entertainment thriller “Prisoners,” a Warner Bros. Pictures’ release starring Oscar® nominees Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”) and Jake Gyllenhaal (“Brokeback Mountain”), and directed by Denis Villeneuve (the Oscar®-nominated “Incendies”). The film was scored by acclaimed Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. The album will be available at all digital retailers, and a CD will be made available through Amazon.com.  The soundtrack will also be released on vinyl via Jóhannsson’s own NTOV Records label this October.

Jóhannsson and Villeneuve decided to try something radical for the soundtrack. “Denis wanted the music to be a poetic voice that worked in counterpoint to the action of the film,” Jóhannsson says. “Even though the film is a thriller, the music is lyrical and beautiful, in stark contrast to the intensity that the film depicts.” Jóhannsson composed the score watching an early cut of the film, reacting to the images on screen.

BEAR MCCREARY EARNS FIRST EMMY® AWARD!!

BEAR MCCREARY EARNS FIRST EMMY® AWARD
MAIN TITLE THEME "DA VINCI’S DEMONS"

(September 16, 2013 – Culver City, CA) On September 15, 2013, composer Bear McCreary earned his first Emmy® Award for the Main Title Theme for DA VINCI’S DEMONS at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. McCreary had been nominated one previous time in the same category for HUMAN TARGET.

“To be nominated alongside some of the most exciting composers working in the industry was, itself, a tremendous honor. I am totally overwhelmed by this win,” said McCreary.

McCreary credits his collaboration with show creator David S. Goyer as to what led to his first Emmy Award win.
“I must share this award with series creator David S. Goyer. When I played him my first demo for the main title, he gave me the greatest feedback a producer can bestow. He said the music was too short!” described McCreary. “The theme was so catchy, he wanted to hear more of it. So, he re-cut his first episode and nearly doubled the length of the Main Title sequence, giving me the opportunity to expand on my ideas. Now that the Main Title Theme and Main Title Design have both won Emmys, I think its safe to say that Goyer had the right idea!”

McCreary’s sweeping orchestral score for DA VINCI’S DEMONS was meticulously researched to accurately represent the time period, without being bound to it. His score combines full orchestra, Renaissance instrumentation, choir and ethnic soloists with the renowned Calder Quartet and surging contemporary synthesis.

“For DA VINCI’S DEMONS, I looked to the real-life Leonardo for inspiration. He famously wrote backwards and forwards, so I decided to do (try) the same thing with his theme!” said McCreary. “It was a nice idea at the time, but proved rather difficult to produce anything with emotional meaning. It took a while, but ultimately, I think the end result works beautifully. It's emotional, and fits Leonardo's character beautifully. Yet, at the same time, it feels like a palindrome.”

Congratulations to all, but a special win for our friend Bear McCreary!

Bill Moseley aka 'Chop-Top' Sawyer [Interview]

Okay, it's been a huge honor and pleasure to be able to sit down with one of the icons of horror films, he brings so much to the table... it's scary. I want to thank Bill and Judy for making this all happen, I hope to meet Bill again at the "Days Of The Dead" coming to Chicago in November. In our lives we get to something that we love to do, Bill Moseley gets the chance to share with us his passion on a daily basis.
-Jeremy [Retro]

Bill Moseley [Interview]

- From films Texas Chainsaw Massacre II to latest contributions like Smothered, Big Top Evil, etc… what gives you the sense of most satisfaction in your body of work.

Bill Moseley: What gives me the most satisfaction in my work is my longevity in show business. I never imagined a career as an actor, let alone working in my favorite genre, horror! I've had many satisfying roles, worked with scores of great directors, actors, cinematographers, but the fact that I continue to get work and do it well makes me feel great!

- Working with many director/actors more than once like Rob Zombie, Sid Haig, Kane Hodder, etc… do you feel when you choose to take on a project, asking yourself which one of your former colleagues might be on set or location? Who is part of your favorite extended family and you know will make this project rock?

Bill Moseley: Sometimes, I'll do a movie without having met the director, and I'm always a little apprehensive about getting on the same page with him or her. If a fellow actor w/ whom I've worked before is on the picture, it's a great help to my attitude and eases whatever tension I may have generated between my ears. For example, last December I worked on a feature called "Old 37," about two brothers who drive around in a beat-up old ambulance and show up at accident sites for no good reasons! When I found out that Kane Hodder was playing my brother, I was overjoyed and fired up! Kane and I go way back to fan conventions and The Devil's Rejects (he was the stunt coordinator!). He's a great guy, a very funny man and an actor who's both a joy to work with and someone who takes his job and his craft seriously. By the way, after Old 37, Kane and I worked on John Schneider's movie, "Smothered," earlier this year in
and around Baton Rouge, LA.

- In between gigs you find time to stretch out with the fans most recently following the Days of the Dead convention. Are you happy with the outcome of the "Days of the Dead" is there anyone you were happy to see/meet of a celebrity nature? Anyone you still get a little bit awestruck by and in your head thinking “that was cool”?

Bill Moseley: I love doing horror conventions, especially love meeting and re-meeting the fans, love seeing the new movies, love the travel, but most of all, I love hanging out with my fellow monsters! Three weeks ago, I traveled from LA to Calgary, Alberta, for a horror con, where I got to spend some quality time with the likes of Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Savini &; the great Herschell Gordon Lewis. the following weekend I was in Kansas City at the KC Crypticon hanging with Sid Haig, William Forsythe, Ken Foree, Debbie Rochon, Tiffany Shepis and Lew Temple. We have a lot of laughs, exchange gossip and casting info, and generally have a wild old time. And we make a little money. AND we show the fans that for the most part, we're a tad saner than our on-screen personae!

- Craziest fan question, gift or comment… you know all those things popped in your head, right?

Bill Moseley: Someone once sent me a cow hoof that had been skinned and bleached. Not sure the message there, but I didn't need another one, so i gave it to Good Will (hahaha)!

- One thing that you are surprised that no one has ever asked that you are willing to share?

"Would you like me to pay for your daughter's tuition?"

- A quick message about life, something that someone shared with you… something you live by?

Bill Moseley: Hmmm, you mean like a saw, an adage or an axiom? Here's one: When I play a "psycho," I always play the character like I'm the only sane one in the room.
Thank You, Bill Moseley... Thank You!

MOSAIC [2013] - Jann Klose

MOSAIC [2013]
Artist: Jann Klose

MOSAIC’s songs tackle personal and topical subjects and bring together a variety of instruments, musical and lyrical styles from street influences of reggae and punk to calypso, to classic rock, and the folk and Afro-beat that has addicted fans of all ages to Jann’s music. Songs include Jann’s originals, “Still,” “Make It Better,” “Four Leaf Clover,” “On and On,” “Falling Tears,” and “Beautiful One” with support vocals from Rounder Records’ Carrie Newcomer. The album ends with a stunning a cappella cover of Tim Buckley’s “Song To The Siren.” Jann’s band The Edukators, Chris Marolf on bass and banjo, drummers Rob Mitzner and Patrick Carmichael, keyboardist and accordionist Lars Potteiger, and violinist Leah Potteiger worked on the album and contributed to the arrangements. Other featured guests include guitarists Florian Opahle (Ian Anderson, Greg Lake) David Bendeth, flautist Tia Roper and oboist Megan Marolf (Phillip Glass, Roger Waters).

Jann Klose

I had the great opportunity of this Cd dropping on my doorstep and like everything I listen to the whole album while I work. Sitting here at the end deciding to listen again or move on to something else, I stuck around. Artist Jann Klose brings his talent from track to track bring a force of different styles that make each song entertaining. I am stealing a quote from his song "The Kite", because it brings what we all try to reach to the years we have been trying to reach them.

Your heart is young and it's strong
Your spirit knows where it belongs
Your eyes still glow when they see
Something they want to achieve

If you want to be moved, may I suggest "Jann Klose's "Mosaic"!

Screamworks Records: The Conspiracy [2013] - Darren Baker

The Conspiracy [2013]
Music by: Darren Baker

Co-inciding with the theatrical releases in France and United Kingdom, and the DVD release in USA, Screamworks Records will release Darren Baker’s experimental and eclectic score to Christopher MacBride's chilling thriller, The Conspiracy. Taking you to the dark underbelly of conspiracy theories, this part-mockumentary, part found footage horror is about two filmmakers who grow fascinated with an insane preacher who spouts out the most complex conspiracy theories one can think of. When the man vanishes, our heroes start looking for clues and are soon sucked into the world of secret societies and worldwide conspiracies...

The score for The Conspiracy was written by Canadian composer Darren Baker, who has been making music since 1998. With relatively few feature-length credits to his name, Baker is still one of the most promising talents of the Canadian film music scene as his score to The Conspiracy can be best described as an intelligent mixture of György Ligeti (as heard in 2001: A Space Odyssey) and the lo-fi industrialist electronica recently popularized by the film scores of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network). The score’s dramatic highpoint, entitled “Threnody For Mithras“, will be a real treat for fans of György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki.

A Single Shot [2013] - Atli Örvarsson

A Single Shot [2013]
Music by: Atli Örvarsson

MovieScore Media/Kronos Records will release Atli Örvarsson’s highly dramatic score for A Single Shot, David Rosenthal’s psychological thriller starring Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Ted Levine, Kelly Reilly, Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Wright. The film tells the story of John Moon, a hunter who accidentally kills an innocent girl during a hunting trip. Taking away a stash of money from the girl’s shelter, Moon finds himself pursued by a group of hardened criminals looking for the same loot… The film opens theatrically in the USA on September 20, 2013 with the soundtrack album coming out on September 17.

Colette [2013] - Atli Örvarsson

Colette [2013]
Music by: Atli Örvarsson

MovieScore Media/Kronos Records will release Atli Örvarsson’s powerful score for Colette, Milan Cieslar’s film adaptation of the novella A Girl from Antwerp by Pulitzer Prize nominated writer Arnošt Lustig. The film tells the story of an unlikely love affair that blossoms between Willie and a Belgian Jewess named Colette. The torrid romance is overshadowed by the Nazi occupation even though it’s very likely that the star-crossed lovers would have never met had it not been for World War II. Colette opens theatrically in the Czech Republic on September 12, 2013, and is expected to get international distribution later in the year.

The music for Colette was written by Hollywood composer Atli Örvarsson whose other current films include The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013), based on the bestselling books by Cassandra Clare, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). The Icelandic-born musician began his film scoring career at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Studios by contributing to the soundtracks of blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2006) and The Simpsons Movie (2008); his more recent scoring credits include The Eagle (2011), Evidence (2013) and A Single Shot (2013; available from MSM/Kronos).

Magnolia Home Entertainment: Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie

Magnolia Home Entertainment:
Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie
Produced and Directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller and Jeremy Newberger
Starring Morton Downey Jr.

Before entire networks were built on populist personalities; before reality morphed into a TV genre; the masses fixated on a single, sociopathic star: controversial talk-show host Morton Downey, Jr. In the late ‘80s, Downey tore apart the traditional talk format by turning debate of current issues into a gladiator pit. His blow-smoke-in-your-face style drew a rabid cult following, but also the title “Father of Trash Television.” ÉVOCATEUR: THE MORTON DOWNEY JR. MOVIE dissects the mind and motivation of television’s most notorious agitator.

I remember watching this not knowing what I was watching, it was scary, fun, smart, racist, radical, unsure and loud... very loud. Now I am only talking about the show, this film is a look into the voice of trash, it was a great flashback. I would recommend if you are a fan of the man, myth and the show, if you are easily offended... then you please do watch.

Magnolia Home Entertainment: HAMMER OF THE GODS

Magnolia Home Entertainment:
HAMMER OF THE GODS
Released By: MAGNET RELEASING

Britain, 871 AD – A young Viking warrior, Steinar (Charlie Bewley), is sent by his father the king on a quest to find his estranged brother, who was banished from the kingdom many years before. Steinar’s epic journey across terrifyingly hostile territory gradually sees him emerge as the man his father wants him to be – the ruthless and unforgiving successor to his throne.

A KING IS BORN OF BLOOD... Now I am a fan of the score to this film [click here], so of course my first thought was to like the film... as I watched.  I found this to be a great paced film with enjoyable fights and bashing's as the journey moved forward. As we make it to the end I felt it wrapped up nicely as I didn't see the coming or I did and didn't believe it.

It is worth the watch if you enjoy this style of film, oh and I do!

Varese Sarabande Catalog # 302 067 221 8 / Digital (limited edition CD coming in September)

Joy I have is that I only get to talk about the score and the score to me will be the only redeeming thing we will take away from this project. I have heard that the critics were not to favorable to the film, but the score is a great paced moving you from place to place.

Varese Sarabande: The Ultimate Life [2013] - Mark Mckenzie

The Ultimate Life [2013]
Music by: Mark Mckenzie

Released By: VARESE SARABANDE

The Ultimate Life is the sequel (and prequel) to the award-winning The Ultimate Gift.

Between the pressure of running a foundation started by his late grandfather, being sued by his greedy extended family, and seeing his beloved Alexia (Ali Hillis) leave on an extended mission trip to Haiti, Jason Stevens' world is unraveling. But when Jason (Logan Bartholoemew) discovers the lifelong journal his grandfather began as a Depression-era lad, Red Stevens’ writings transport Jason to a front-row seat on an incredible rags-to-riches ride. With everything he loves hanging in the balance, Jason hopes he can discover THE ULTIMATE LIFE.

Composer Mark McKenzie returns for this chapter with an orchestral and southern bluegrass music-infused score. Opening in theaters on September 6, THE ULTIMATE LIFE reminds us some things are worth more than money.

This is a wonderful piece of music, one you can listen to and get more each time you listen. I think we all get a life lesson and we learn from it.
