Dead Girls is a horror anthology that follows three stories of abused and forsaken girls who return from the dead to take their revenge. In one, a ghostly apparition seeks revenge upon the man who betrayed her love and is responsible for her death. In another, a mystical object helps a young woman reach out from beyond the grace to exact her revenge upon the cruel sisters she wanted so much to be a part of. And in the third, an orphan girls’ prayers are answered by a surprising entity.

Red River Entertainment: Marshall Crenshaw releases new 10” Vinyl EP, Red Wine

Legendary rocker, Marshall Crenshaw, releases his new EP entitled Red Wine, as part of his limited edition subscription based EP series available only on 10” vinyl and digital download.

In keeping with the previous EP releases, Red Wine consists entirely of newly recorded, never-before-released material, encompassing a new original Crenshaw composition, a classic cover tune, and a new reworking of a time-honored Crenshaw favorite. There is also an unlisted surprise “bonus” track.

Crenshaw's fourth EP, Red Wine, features the great new title song on the A-side as well as a cover of James McMurty's "Right Here Now" and a re-make of his classic "Delilah" entitled "Hey Delilah" on the B-side. All three tracks were mastered for maximum sound fidelity by veteran engineer Greg Calbi, who is handling mastering duties on the entire EP series.

“I’ve always put a great deal of care into the albums I’ve made,” Crenshaw says, “but as a listener, I’ve always been a singles guy and an individual-tracks guy. I’m looking forward to creating a steady output of music in small batches, rather than being stuck in a cave for months and stockpiling a whole bunch of music and dumping it out all at once. Now, when I finish something, I get to put it out, instead of having to wait until I’ve got 12 more.”

Each EP is part of a new business model for Marshall – a subscription service, which the singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer recently launched via a successful Kickstarter funding campaign, that will provide fans with a steady stream of new Marshall Crenshaw music via a series of exclusive three-song 10-inch, 45-rpm vinyl EPs, six of which Crenshaw plans to release over a two-year period. In addition to the vinyl discs, subscribers will also receive a download card for high-quality digital versions of the EP tracks.

Over the course of a career that’s spanned three decades, 13 albums and hundreds of songs, Marshall Crenshaw’s musical output has maintained a consistent fidelity to the qualities of melody, craftsmanship and passion, and his efforts have been rewarded with the devotion of a broad and remarkably loyal fan base.

His debut album, Marshall Crenshaw, was acclaimed as a pop masterpiece upon its release in 1982 and established him as a first-rate songwriter, singer and guitarist. The record spawned the Top 40 single “Someday Someway,” which rockabilly singer Robert Gordon covered and scored a hit with a year earlier. Other Crenshaw classics include “(You’re My) Favorite Waste of Time,” “Whenever You’re On My Mind,” “There She Goes Again” and “Cynical Girl.” The great songs continued with the Life’s Too Short album on MCA (“Fantastic Planet of Love”), three albums for Razor & Tie and the 2009 release Jaggedland (“Someone Told Me,” “Passing Through,” “Never Coming Down”).

Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE SIGNAL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available digitally and on CD June 10, 2014.   The soundtrack features the original score by Nima Fakhara (GATCHAMAN, EXISTS), who created and built three instruments for the film.

“We wanted to achieve a certain sense mystery and tension throughout the film,” said Fakhara.  “Our characters are being pulled and pushed in many directions so the music had to feel the same.  We also wanted keep the audience guessing throughout the film by scoring scenes in unconventional ways.”

Nima Fakhrara is a Los Angeles based film composer, who has worked with directors such as Golden Globe winner Hany Abu-Assad, and the father of found footage, Eduardo Sanchez. His most recent scores are to GATCHAMAN, directed by Toya Sato and starring Tori Matsuzaka and Ryohei Suzuki, a live action take on the anime series Battle of the Planets, SITE 146, directed by Gregory Levveseur, starring Denis O’Hare and Ashley Hinshaw, and produced by Alexander Aja (PIRANHA 3D), and EXISTS, directed by Eduardo Sanchez and starring Dora Madison Burge and Brian Steele.

Born in Iran, Nima’s first experience with music was listening to his uncle play the santour. Influenced by this, he studied santour and became well versed in Persian classical music. After moving to the United States, Nima continued his musical studies and attended California State University Northridge where he obtained his degree in composition studies. However, his interest in music was not limited to composition and performance. He studied ethnomusicology, anthropology, and how to construct instruments, which has led to signature sound in Nima's music. This is apparent in his sampling and use of instruments from many regions of the world in various genres of film. The use of these new sounds alongside orchestral and ambient textures is a defining characteristic in his scores. In 2009, Nima opened Sound and Vision Creatives, where he alongside his most used musicians are housed.

For THE SIGNAL, “I built three instruments that became the signature sounds of the project.  The Pagoda (tree-like thing), the Transmission (what seems like a transmit ion) and the Steel Marimba (Marimba looking thing).  They are used in many different ways, both by using their natural sounds and manipulating the sounds to get cool textures.”   

Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour: the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. The trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area. Suddenly everything goes dark. When one of the students, Nic (Brenton Thwaites of The Giver and Maleficent), regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare…

Focus Features presents THE SIGNAL in theaters on June 13, 2014.  The THE SIGNAL – Ori ginal Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be released digitally and on CD June 10, 2014.

MovieScore Media releases the electrifying retro score for We Are the Freaks, composed by Vincent Watts. Written and directed by Justin Edgar, the film follows the adventures of Jack (Jamie Blackley), Parsons (Mike Bailey) and Chunks (Sean Teale) on a Friday night that will change their lives forever. All three of the protagonists seem themselves as 'Freaks': Jack comes from a working class background and is awaiting news about getting a college grant, Parson’s dominating family had already mapped out his life for him, while eccentric Chunks can live off his wealthy divorced parents competing for his attention. But in the post-Thatcher Britain, things can always go haywire...

Composer Vincent Watts began his musical training aged 4 when he started to learn to play the violin. After years of orchestral performing, composing and listening his education culminated in a BA (Hons) music degree from Leeds University.  This was shortly followed by specialised studies at the Media School of Bournemouth University where he got his masters degree in ‘Music for the Screen.’ Known for his holistic approach to film soundtracks, Watts also frequently works as supervising sound designer on many of the movies he's involved in. His previous credits include the BAFTA nominated documentary Taking Liberties (2007) and the slacker revenge movie Red, White and Blue (2010).

True to his name, Watts electrifies the soundtrack of We Are the Freaks with unique, self-contained cues of synthesized retro brilliance. The composer talks about his experiences: Justin and I discussed creating a retro electronica sound that referenced bands such as Tangerine Dream. The score also injects an emotively sincere quality that nicely contrasts with the more light hearted moments in the film. One cue that didn't make it into the soundtrack was an electronic version of the 'The Flight of The Bumblebee'- my homage to Wendy Carlos who created the electronic score for 'A Clockwork Orange'.

MSM/Kronos: Report 51 - Angelo Talocci and La rete - Sébastien Damiani

MovieScore Media soundtracks. The second one features the award-winning score of Italian composer Angelo Talocci coupled with an exciting short film score by French composer Sébastien Damiani.

Following our previous release of Across the River, MovieScore Media once again taps into the previously unexplored territory of contemporary Italian horror movies. Alessio Liguori’s Report 51: Alien Invasion follows in the trails of four friends, who decide to move into the woodlands after they witness a strange sighting. What starts out as a fun adventure for a weekend turns into a nightmare and a race for survival. The soundtrack release coincides with the film’s DVD premiere on the North American market on May 20, 2014.

Most of the score is provided by veteran Italian composer Angelo Talocci, whose original contributions for the film have been collected together into the epic suite which plays as a sort of programmatic concert piece for the alien invasion. The other pieces on the album were licenced from the composer’s catalogue and were used as source and trailer music for promotion. Talocci received the Global Music Award in 2013 for Report 51 and The One Dollar Movie. The soundtrack also includes the song “Brushed Hearts”, written by Emiliano Manzillo and Dirk Harzé, performed by The Irresistible Johnsons who also contributed the instrumental intro music for the film (also available in an alternate version).

The album also features music from Alessio Liguori’s previous film entitled The Network (in Italian: La rete). This experimental thriller short lasting 22-minutes tells the story of two women and is made up of two continuous long-takes. The music by French composer Sébastien Damiani is characterized by strings-and-electronica based aural suspense (most notably in "Cellar") while the tense tale of revenge is capped off by a creepy lullaby. It’s interesting to note that the director and the composer never met during the production of the score, so the close-knit relationship between the sound design and the extra long takes is all the more remarkable.

MSM/Kronos: Test [2014] - Ceiri Torjussen

MovieScore Media releases the 80s-flavored retro score for Test, a gay/HIV-themed dance film by filmmaker Chris Mason Johnson. The story is set in San Francisco, 1985. Frankie (Scott Marlowe) faces the challenges of being an understudy at a modern dance company while he also embarks on a blossoming relationship with Todd (Matthew Risch), a veteran dancer at the same company. Although they are very different (Todd is the bad boy to Frankie’s innocence), their friendship still deepens as they navigate a world of risk - the early years of the HIV epidemic. In a world filled with hope, humor, visual beauty and amazing choreography, the musical relief is provided by the funky soundtrack by Ceiri Torjussen.

Welsh-born composer Ceiri Torjussen has been present on the Los Angeles film music scene since 2000, He participated in scoring Hollywood blockbusters like Repo Men, Live Free or Die Hard and Underworld Evolution. His more recent scores include the bombastic action comedy Big Ass Spider! (inspired by monster movie music of the 1950s), while his music for The Canal (that premiered at Tribeca, 2014) features an experimental score with unusual instruments such as a 1907 Edison Wax Cylinder Player.

Proving that he can find the musical calling of any decade, Torjussen revisits the 1980s dance scene to get inspiration for his Test score. “Before I began composing, I listened to a lot of 80s synth music“ recalls the composer, “especially Brian Eno, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder etc. I worked with retro sounds such as Moogs, DX7s, Arp2600s, Linndrum, and myriad other classic 80s synths. Although this wasn’t the music I was most passionate about while growing up, researching 80s synth-pop and ambient music for this score made me appreciate the style a lot more – both in its amazing melodic power and the production value of this unique era of pop history.” Torjussen’s score features a wonderful amalgamation of 80s power anthems, addictive dance beats and moody sound design all wrapped into one exciting package.

Normally this would be easy as Max's men have left all of their ammunition back in Mexico, but the State department insists that no one be killed and so the National Guard also goes in with unloaded weapons.

Co-written and directed by Lorenzo Bianchini, Across the River (Oltre il guado) is a moody, meditative Italian horror film where one man’s quest for knowledge leads down a dark path of supernatural chills and scares. The story revolves around an ethologist working in the remote parts of a forest, trapping wild animals and mounting cameras on them. The recordings by the animals lead him to a remote village, the supposed site of mysterious hauntings by the spirits of two sisters. When he gets trapped due to the floods from unusually heavy rainfall, our protagonist realizes that the ancient curse he heard about is not to be taken lightly…

The music for Across the River is courtesy of Italian composer and musician Stefano Sciascia. Sciascia started to study the double bass at the age of sixteen, then proceeded to be a featured soloist with a number of orchestras around the world. Thanks to his passion of researching and transcribing new pieces for double bass to enriching his instrument’s solo repertoire, Sciascia started to write his own music with a special focus on highlighting the beauty of double bass - Across the River marks his first transition to the world of cinema.

The soundtrack album for Across the River is a compilation of original music interspersed with pieces licensed from the composer’s previous albums. Seven compositions had previously appeared on Sciascia’s acclaimed concept album Lux ex Tenebris (2010), a Gothic sounding visual-aural-musical narration highlighting the versatility of double bass. Two pieces come from the composer’s earlier album Mantra 22.22 (2004) and there’s also an original composition which the composer wrote especially for the film. Haunting, moody and mysterious, Sciascia’s meditative compositions prove that licensed music can be as effective as original scoring as long as the music is utilized the right way.

50th CD release, Music Box Records is very proud to present the original soundtrack from Golden Needles (1974) by Lalo Schifrin. 

Capitalizing on the early ‘70s kung-fu craze, the film tells the story of a mysterious statue which contains the secret location of acupuncture points that may cure many illnesses – or lead to instant death if they are applied in the wrong order. When rival gangs start a fierce hunt after the statue, it’s up to Dan (Joe Don Baker) to get the statue for the mysterious girl who had hired him. Briefly teaming up with blaxploitation icon Jim Kelly, Baker is ready to deliver swift punches, escape death traps and throw people across panes until he gets what he wants…

This CD will be released on June 2, 2014.

This CD marks the premiere release of Golden Needles. This soundtrack presents all the music and is accompanied by an 8-page booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai who discusses the film and the score. Golden Needles may lack the name recognition of Bullitt or the cult factor of Enter the Dragon, but the score definitely delivers everything you’d expect from the composer at the top of his game – and it certainly doesn’t disappoint fans of Schifrin or martial arts movies in general.
