Interview with Composer Jeremy Tisser

Being able to talk with cool people, is one of the main reasons why we are here... if not for the label HOWLIN' WOLF RECORDS, I get to share a great composer "Jeremy Tisser". So please welcome him and enjoy this journey into the world of music from Jeremy's view. THANK YOU to all who helped pull this together from Ashley to Jeremy himself, once again cool people...
Jeremy [The Wolf]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeremy [The Wolf]: What are some of the things you have learned in the business of composing and whom are some of those you have worked with up to this point?

Jeremy Tisser: In the few short years it’s been since I graduated from USC, I’ve learned quite a bit about the business.  We come out of school expecting to jump into this cutthroat industry, but the reality is that it takes years. You spend time honing your craft, as well as working on the business. The industry is no longer only about the music. With the advancements of technology, a composer also has to learn to essentially become a “computer technician”. My setup involves a main computer which hosts my main writing software, a sample machine which hosts all of my orchestral digital instruments (referred to as Sample Libraries), and a second Mac Pro with is used only for Pro Tools. I use a MIDI keyboard to play the instruments of my sample libraries into my writing software, and the audio is sent from that machine through various interfaces and into my Pro Tools machine. The audio is divided up in Pro Tools into what are called Audio Stems, or the different pieces of the mix. An example of the stems can be Orchestra, High Percussion, Low Percussion, Guitars, Keyboards, Choir, High Synth, and Low Synth. When you combine these tracks and play them simultaneously, you hear what is the Final Mix of each cue. It’s really quite fascinating!

I began my career working with composers Mark Watters and Frederik Wiedmann. My job with Freddie was more of a technical assistant job, though there were plenty of times I could be hands on with the music by acting as the copyist (creating the musician’s parts for recording sessions). With Mark, it was more of a musical job. Often with Mark, I was orchestrated, or preparing scores, or transferring his mockups into sheet notation for Mark to orchestrate, and even writing additional music.

Jeremy [The Wolf]: Where do you see yourself in say one year... five years and do you find not planning the next move more intriguing?

Jeremy Tisser: This is always an intriguing question to me. I always like to set goals for myself, but you never really know what projects will come from where. It almost makes the idea of not planning to be more exciting.  I have to love the projects I work on in order to be inspired, and that passion always seems to lead to more interesting projects, be it in film, television, or video games. So the best answer I can give is that wherever this path takes me is where I’m going to go.

Jeremy [The Wolf]: Who do you consider to be influences, who do you listen to for inspiration?

Jeremy Tisser: My biggest influences would be John Powell, Jerry Goldsmith, John Willams, and Thomas Newman. To me, these are the top story tellers in the field of composing for film and television. Every project has a story and a purpose, and with these composers I’ve just mentioned, they made a point to not only tell the right story for each film, but to individualize every project they do. Each film has its own soul and is unique in its own way, and the music should reflect that. With every project I work on, I try to approach the score with a fresh set of ears and eyes. I don’t want to be influenced by my own work. Every project has something new and unique to offer the world, and to me the music should be approached in a similar method.

When I’m in between projects, I tend to try and stay away from film music as much as I can. I mean I do enjoy listening to film music just for the music, but in general I enjoy Michael Jackson, Tower of Power, Thrice, Deftones, Dream Theater, etc. It is a chance for me to get away from the film world and essentially “clean my palate,” if you will. When I’m on a project, really I just listen to anything and everything. I love to study the classics like Ravel and Stravinsky, but I also do enjoy listening to music of current and past films. Like I mentioned earlier, every film is unique and tells its own story, and every composer who has made it has something to offer the world. We shouldn’t take that for granted, and make sure to enjoy what it is these people have given us.

Jeremy [The Wolf]: Do you prefer game or film score music more of a challenge and do you like that game music has come a long way in a short time?

Jeremy Tisser: I think both film and game music are challenging in their own way. With films, you are locked to picture. Everything that you write has to reflect what is on the screen, and if it doesn’t work it must be changed or taken out. With games, the music still has to reflect what’s happening on screen, but you are not locked to any specific timings necessarily – at least not the same way as in films.  There might be a 30 second build-up, for example, but you don’t have to sync to a specific hit or cut. The challenge of game music for me is figuring out how to make a piece of music loop without sounding repetitive or dull.

I love how far game music has come, especially with in-game cinematics. In today’s gaming world, the sky is the limit on what is or is not possible. We are no longer limited by technology with regards to music creation. You can write completely dynamic music, and the implementation allows for the music to change and evolve with the player as the game progresses.  I’m working on a virtual reality game right now where during the action sequences, new cues and themes are introduced when a new enemy shows up. The trick is that the music still has to flow and make sense together. In addition to alternate cues being phased in this way, there are also musical layers that can be added or removed based on the games intensity, the enemy distance, or even potentially the weapon choice. There is so much that can be done in games that it really inspires a whole new set of skills that was never even an option in other mediums, or even earlier games.

Caldera Records: THE WIND GODS [2015] - Pinar Toprak

Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the American documentary The Wind Gods from 2011, composed by Pinar Toprak. The movie chronicles the 10 year quest of famous entrepreneur Larry Ellison who set sail with his ‘Oracle’ to win the America’s Cup and therefore bring the prestigious sailing prize home to the US after it had been won by foreigners in the past years. The documentary which is both an adventure, an insight into the mindset of the well-known billionaire and a love letter to sailing, is narrated by Jeremy Irons and features the magnum opus by its composer Toprak. The Turkish-born musician delivered a grand, sweeping and epic score which shows how exciting the music for a documentary can be: filled with several memorable themes, a detailed orchestration and a lot of swashbuckling action, the music brims with masculine forces and female sensibilities.

Deservedly, Toprak was awarded the IFMCA award (International Film Music Critics Association) for Best Documentary Score in 2011 and trumped out prestigious colleagues like George Fenton and Patrick Doyle for their efforts that year. This is no surprise: recorded with the 70+ piece Hollywood Studio Symphony conducted by Jerome Leroy, The Wind Gods is a vivid, thematic and diverse score worthy of the biggest Hollywood epics. As a bonus, we included an exclusive audio commentary by the composer where she talks about his work. The twelfth CD-release of Caldera Records features a detailed booklet-text by Gergely Hubai and elegant artwork by Luis Miguel Rojas. The CD was produced by Stephan Eicke and John Elborg.

Lakeshore Records: WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM - Jasha Klebe

Lakeshore Records will release the WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM – Original Soundtrack digitally on December 11, 2015, and on CD February 12, 2016. The album features the film’s original music composed by Jasha Klebe.

Composer Jasha Klebe’s musical upbringing was influenced early in life by his grandfather, Marvin Klebe, a baritone opera singer who once sang with the San Francisco Opera Company.  Following years of classical piano training, Jasha began his film composing career at Remote Control Productions, where he earned the opportunity as an additional writer along side Oscar® winning composer, Hans Zimmer, writing on such notable projects as The Dark Knight Rises, Rush, and Captain Phillips.  For four years he gained experience working with top artists in the industry, including working with the Grammy® Award winning composer Lorne Balfe on several TV shows and video games (The Bible TV series, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations).  Jasha is currently one of the leading composers at Bleeding Fingers Custom Music Shop (a Hans Zimmer and Extreme Music creative partnership) located in Santa Monica, California and works in one of their state-of-the art studios.

“I sat down with Egveny and John Battsek and discussed the idea that I wanted to create something of an anthem for the people,” Klebe described. “Throughout the film, from the march of the millions, to the building of barricades, to ultimately the final scene where they achieve the overthrow of Yanukovych, I wanted to create a simple tune that anyone could hum along to; a piece of music that constantly grew, just as the number of protesters in Maidan did, and ultimately conveyed their courage and sense of unity.”

Netflix Documentary present WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM – Original Soundtrack in select U.S. theaters and on Netflix.  Lakeshore Records will release the WINTER ON FIRE: UKRAINE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM – Original Soundtrack digitally on December 11, 2015, and on CD February 12, 2016.

Lakeshore Records: BROOKLYN [2015] (Various Artists)

Lakeshore Records will release the BROOKLYN – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on December 4th and on December 18, 2015.  The album features recordings of Irish classics including “My Wild Irish Rose”, “Castle Finn” and “Boolavogue.”

“When I was working on the novel Brooklyn, I imagined a scene on Christmas Day when men who were down on their luck would come to a parish hall for Christmas dinner,” described writer Colm Tóibín.  “The Ireland they carried with them included a musical culture as well as a legacy of hardship.”

Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

“Everyone has a favorite film moment and it's invariably accompanied by music,” added director John Crowley.  “In BROOKLYN the songs and tracks journey from the more traditional fare of an Enniscorthy dancehall all the way across the Atlantic to Coney Island where the sights and sounds of emerging pop culture in fifties America fill the screen. Each one marks a subtle shift in our heroine’s journey. For Eilis, it's a long way from 'Boolavogue' to Bing Crosby...”

“The early 1950s was a transitional period for Ireland, both socially and musically,” described John Carty, who served as music coordinator and created additional music for the film.  “Through the medium of radio, recordings and film, people were now exposed to popular music from outside Ireland…The old time waltz became very popular, giving couples the opportunity to dance intimately with each other to well known Irish song airs such as ‘Boolavogue’ and ‘My Wild Irish Rose’. Traditional dances like the hornpipe and barn-dance rhythms remained in style, particularly the ‘Stack of Barley.’ Military-two-steps were also danced to lively and jovial tunes such as ‘The Yellow Rose Of Texas.’”

Lakeshore Records: COMET [2015] - Daniel Hart

Lakeshore Records will release the Comet – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on November 27, 2015. The album features original music by Daniel Hart (AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS, THE SIDEWAYS LIGHT).

“Director Sam Esmail and I had a couple long conversations before the scoring process began, about what he was looking for musically for COMET,” said Hart. “Sam had a really wide range of musical ideas he thought important to telling the story, and I feel like a big part of my job was to take Sam's incredibly diverse palette and make it into something cohesive. Representing all of Sam's musical influences related to COMET was a huge challenge for me, but I'm really proud of the way this score turned out.”

Justin Long and Emmy Rossum are star-crossed lovers whose relationship blooms and unravels over the course of six years in this mysterious, dazzlingly original romance. When a chance encounter brings together the cynical Dell (Long) and the quick-witted Kimberly (Rossum), the stage is set for a tempestuous love affair that unfolds like a puzzle. As the film zigzags back and forth in time—from a meteor shower in LA, to an encounter in a Paris hotel room, to a fateful phone call—an unforgettable portrait of a relationship emerges. Sumptuously shot and boasting incredible chemistry between the leads, Comet is a one-of-a-kind cosmic love story.

“With the title theme, I was following a very specific melody that felt to me like a real representation of bittersweet longing, of unfinished love,” said Hart. “It was one of the very first musical ideas I had related to the film, and I'm glad it got to stay, and play a prominent part in the score.”

There are a few themes in COMET that have special significance to the composer.  “There's a piece, which ended up in the film, that is about two friends of mine,” Hard explained.  “In the film, it plays underneath Kimberly's monologue about time, while she's eating Chinese food in their Parisian hotel room. It's a solo piano piece called ‘Jill and Brian’, friends of mine who got married while I was scoring COMET. I gave this piece to them as their wedding gift….Sadly, Brian also passed away during the scoring of COMET, as he had been diagnosed with fairly aggressive cancer about a year before. And to that end, everything Kim says in that scene about wanting to stop time, about wanting life to be more like a painting, well, it certainly captured a lot of how I was feeling then, wishing I had more time with Brian before he was gone.”

The film also gave Hart the opportunity to explore other genres and expand his creativity.  He composed music to go along with the old educational science films showing at the cemetery before the meteor shower.  He said, “That was the most fun for me. Similar to dissecting old French ballads, which I did for the film, I was able to watch several NASA films from the 60s and 70s to get a feel for the type of music in them.  They were almost always orchestral, and felt to me like they wanted to create the sense of wonder, mystery and strangeness that we associate with outer space, space exploration, other worlds, STAR TREK, etc. Piecing together all the science film music from COMET in preparation for the soundtrack was an absolute blast (pun intended)!”

IFC Films presents COMET now available On Demand.  The COMET – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally on November 27, 2015.

INTRADA: JAWS [2-Set] (1975-2015) - JOHN WILLIAMS!

The theme from Jaws is one of the most iconic in all of film music.  It not only communicates the mortal threat of a living killing machine, it performs double duty and fills in for the screen absence of the shark itself.  The theme is the shark.  It is the menace.  And it is forever en-grained in our minds.  Now, forty years after the 1975 release of the film, Intrada presents a special, 2-disc presentation of the iconic, Oscar-winning score.  One disc features a reissue of the original MCA recording released in '75 -- a rerecorded, reworking of the score for commercial audiences that won Williams his first Grammy.  The other disc features the original film tracks, sourced from the unmixed 1/2" elements, completely restored using state-of-the-art technology.  These master tapes featured a nontraditional mix, allowing for the low strings -- the force behind the shark -- to be a dominant presence amongst the orchestra.  While these tracks were previously released in 2000 featuring a stereo mix derived from the 5.1 DVD spread, its mix-down and added reverb took much of the punch out of the score.  Going back to the original recording, engineer Mike Matessino was able to create a thrilling new experience and achieve a stunning sound, the likes of which have not been heard from this score before.

Most of the original score was presented on the 2000 Decca release, but in addition to the remastered quality the music is now presented in narrative sequence, with a few previously truncated phrases and one short unused cue added to the program. The original elements also yielded a healthy collection of “Extras” that include an alternate version of the “Main Title.”  Rounding out the disc with the 1975 album is a selection of source cues from the film, also previously unreleased.   John Williams reviewed and approved this entire presentation.

This landmark release is the ultimate presentation of the music from Jaws and concludes Intrada's journey to restoring the music from all the four Jaws films.

Magnolia: BEST OF ENEMIES: Starring William F Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal

In the summer of 1968 television news changed forever. Dead last in the ratings, ABC hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. A Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, Gore Vidal was a leftist novelist and polemicist. Armed with deep-seated distrust and enmity, Vidal and Buckley believed each other’s political ideologies were dangerous for America. Like rounds in a heavyweight battle, they pummeled out policy and personal insult—their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted. Ratings for ABC News skyrocketed. And a new era in public discourse was born.

Directed with consummate skill by filmmakers Robert Gordon and Academy Award-winning Sundance Film Festival alum Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom), Best of Enemies unleashes a highbrow blood sport that marked the dawn of pundit television as we know it today.

Lakeshore Records: CASUAL [HULU] - Mateo Messina with Rolfe Kent

Lakeshore Records will release the score for CASUAL, Jason Reitman’s original Hulu series with Lionsgate TV, digitally on November 27, 2015, and on CD in early 2016. The album features original music by Mateo Messina (JUNO, THE ANGRIEST MAN IN BROOKLYN, BUTTER) with Rolfe Kent (LABOR DAY, UP IN THE AIR).

“This is such a unique series to score as it feels more like writing an emotion and seeing how it lives under a scene,” said Messina. “It has felt quite different than scoring scenes like we normally do in Hollywood.  This series is driven more by digging inside of the characters than it is about anything that is happening on the surface.”

From the Academy Award®-Nominated Director of UP IN THE AIR and JUNO comes CASUAL, a new comedy series about a bachelor brother and his newly divorced sister living under one roof again. Together, they coach each other through the crazy world of dating while raising her teenage daughter. Created by Zander Lehmann, CASUAL is executive produced by Jason Reitman, Zander Lehmann, Helen Estabrook, and Liz Tigelaar.

“Mateo and I found a superb mesh between our two approaches, and found ourselves creating music that blends easily with each other and the nature of the show,” said Kent.  “Jason asked for an unusual, stripped down kind of sound, so this was a great chance to play with eccentric sounds, detuned trumpets, a broken banjo, and off-kilter grooves to go with the off-kilter lives unfolding on screen.”

“The most unique thing about this score is I asked, requested/demanded nobody tune their instruments before we started recording,” described Messina. “We mic’d everyone so close you can hear the bow of the cello sliding across the coils of the strings, you can hear a thumbnail on a mandolin, you can even occasionally hear the breaths of the players.  It’s all very subtle and very human.  I wanted this score to sound as human as these characters feel in the series.”

Grammy® winning composer Mateo Messina’s distinct, moving, and often quirky musical voice has graced Oscar®-winning films, indie hits, and popular television alike. His folksy, guitar-led score for Jason Reitman’s JUNO (starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera) contributed to the film’s runaway success and its soundtrack album’s Grammy® win. He lifted the spirits of Phil Alden Robinson’s dramedy THE ANGRIEST MAN IN BROOKLYN, starring Robin Williams (in his final role) and Mila Kunis. His cheeky, funk-flavored music was spread onto the dark comedy BUTTER, starring Jennifer Garner. For Reitman and JUNO screenwriter Diablo Cody’s critical darling, YOUNG ADULT (starring Charlize Theron), Messina created and produced muzak versions of iconic ’90s radio hits. His recent films include the action comedy about a teenage special ops agent, BARELY LETHAL, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Samuel L. Jackson.

After Dark Films: UNNATURAL - 8 Films to Die!

A photographer and his group set out in the dead of winter for the Alaskan wilderness to take advantage of the limited, but beautiful daylight. They are met by an experienced hunter and local lodge owner who instills fear within the group by telling them the legend of Maneater, a bear that has fangs and claws sharper than man made metal.

This epic tall tale quickly becomes our groups real living nightmare as they are unaware of a bear experiment that has gone wrong. The bioengineering company, Clobirch Industries, has genetically altered a polar bear so it can better survive climate change, but the end result is a relentless, deadly, man eating machine.

It is up to our lodge owner and his native guide to protect the group from harm, but this bear proves to be more than he or anyone else ever expected.
