Varese Sarabande: SHAMELESS [2014]

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS PRESENTS:
SHAMELESS – MUSIC FROM THE TELEVISION SERIES
Featuring US Debut of “Written Down” From Season 4, Songs By The Moog, The Wild Yaks,
Chris Pureka, and the Theme Song “The Luck You Got” by The High Strung

(March 31, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records will release SHAMELESS Music From The Television Series available digitally and on CD April 15, 2014.  Included on the soundtrack is the opening song from season four, “Written Down” by David E. Sugar, making its first U.S. release.

The music featured on the critically acclaimed SHOWTIME series SHAMELESS tries to capture the individual, non-conformist nature of the Gallagher world.  Most often the music isn't playing as a piece that a character puts on the stereo to listen to, rather it plays more as score, as the soundtrack to a Gallagher life.  The first four seasons of the show have used over 750 songs.  Series Music Supervisor Ann Kline distilled that down to 14 tracks that are most representative of the show.

“It was really hard narrowing the track list down!” said Kline.  “We tried to include songs that really captured the essence of the show.  So, some of the tracks are wild, some quirky and some are really sad, but all are SHAMELESS.  Hopefully we can put out some follow up soundtracks, because there were tons more songs we would have loved to include, many of which are hard to find.”

The album kicks off with the theme song, “The Luck You Got” by The High Strung.  The album also captures the ‘wild side’ with bands like: The Moog, The Wild Yaks, FidLAr, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and the more heartbreaking side, with tracks like “Years” by JBM and “Hangman” by Chris Pureka.

“One of the things that makes SHAMELESS so compelling, is the depth of the characters,” explained Kline.  “Although the Gallaghers are far from perfect, they aren’t one dimensional, and they each have characteristics that make you love them and root for them.  We tried to use music that hit those emotions as well, that help you feel their inner struggle between their hard circumstances and their desires to live a more carefree life.”

Oscar®-nominated William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum star in this fiercely engaging and fearlessly twisted series. Chicagoan Frank Gallagher is the proud single dad of six smart, industrious, independent kids, who without him would be...perhaps better off. When Frank's not at the bar spending what little money they have, he's passed out on the floor. But the kids have found ways to grow up in spite of him. They may not be like any family you know, but they make no apologies for being exactly who they are.

Track List:
1. The Luck You Got • The High Strung (Main Title)
2. Survive • The Moog
3. Loved You All Along • La Strada
4. Black Cloud • Choo Choo La Rouge
5. Wait For The Man • Fidlar
6. Something For Nothing • Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
7. Tomahawk • Wild Yaks
8. Who's That Dude - Part One • Capital City
9. Years • JBM
10. Hangman • Chris Pureka
11. The Usual Chords • Slow Runner
12. Three Days On End • Blood Relative
13. Keep It Coming • Letters
14. Written Down • David E. Sugar

Produced by Bonanza Productions, Inc. in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television, the fourth season of SHAMELESS airs Sunday nights at 9/8c on SHOWTIME.  SHAMELESS Music From The Television Series, from Varèse Sarabande Records, will be available digitally and on CD April 15, 2014.

PHANTASM: RAVAGER!!! and Teaser Trailer!!!!

FEAR FRANCHISE'S FEATURE FILM FINISHED SHOOTING
PHANTASM: RAVAGER
PRODUCTION COMPLETED
DON COSCARELLI WRITES & PRODUCES
DAVID HARTMAN DIRECTS
SHOWDOWN ON TALL MAN'S HOME WORLD

For Immediate Release (Hollywood, CA) - Filmmaker Don Coscarelli announced today that PHANTASM: RAVAGER, the long-awaited fifth and final entry in his classic horror Phantasm series, has completed principle photography. The original Phantasm was a worldwide critical and box office smash, spawning a huge cult of fans around the world and three well received sequels.

For the first time in the franchise's history, a new director is helming the production, one David Hartman. Hartman is a multiple Emmy-nominated animation director, whose work can be seen in such celebrated shows as Transformers Prime and Roughnecks: Starship Troopers. Serious genre fans have long been familiar with Hartman’s edgier output, including two blood-soaked music videos for Rob Zombie ("American Witch," and "Lords of Salem"), and his illustrations of Steve Niles' "Strange Cases" for Image Comics.

"I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set," noted Coscarelli, who co-wrote the film with Hartman and produced the film under his Silver Sphere banner along with Executive Producer Brad Baruh. "David and I go back to my film Bubba Ho-Tep. He did terrific visual effects on that, and more recently created a wild animated sequence and some amazing visual effects in my most recent film, John Dies at the End. Our aesthetics are in sync and he's quite an experienced director in his own right," Coscarelli stated.

"Having worked with Don [Coscarelli] before, and being a huge fan of the entire Phantasm franchise, it was a great honor to do RAVAGER with him," says Hartman. "This film is a real turning point in the series. There's real closure for the core characters that I hope fans will respond to. We were fortunate to shoot amazing new sequences with horror icon Angus Scrimm—he has terrific scenes with Reggie (Bannister) and Mike (Michael Baldwin) that are truly powerful.”

Production on RAVAGER took place in and around southern California over the past two years. "The Phantasm films have been a guerrilla operation for decades now, totally outside of the studio system," Coscarelli notes. "We do them for the fans, and I think Ravager will definitely please them. In the past few years several studios have made offers to remake Phantasm with large budgets, but the fans were very vocal that they wanted the original cast to return and finish this iteration of the story with class. And for the first time there’s an extended sequence on the Tall Man’s home world. I know Phantasm fans will be as excited as I am to see it.”

RAVAGER features Reggie Bannister (a veteran of all five films) in his decades-long pursuit of the malevolent Tall Man, and it finally forces him to confront the mysteries at the heart of the Phantasm saga. The entire original cast is back including Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester and Angus Scrimm, along with some great new characters. Coscarelli allows, “There are also some surprises thrown in that I promise will astonish long-time fans.”

Oh... thank you lord! With all the remakes and redone garbage... this is truly great news, original actors, writers and fans. I am a fan, in case you missed this... I am a fan!

Lakeshore Records: Something Wicked [2014] - Kyle Newmaster

LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS:
SOMETHING WICKED [2014]
Featuring Original Music by Kyle Newmaster

(March 21, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release SOMETHING WICKED – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and via Amazon Disc-On-Demand April 1, 2014.  The soundtrack features original music by Kyle Newmaster (KINECT STAR WARS, BLOOD SHOT).  SOMETHING WICKED is the final film starring the late actress Brittany Murphy.

“I also had a blast scoring the tense more traditional horror moments in the film. I really enjoy writing tense, dark, orchestral music and combining it with other sounds and elements,” said Newmaster.  “For these scenes I did quite a bit of recording with live orchestral musicians in which we recorded a variety of textural and aleatoric sounds.”

Award-winning film, TV and game music composer, Kyle Newmaster – a self-professed STAR WARS fanatic – helped bring the pop culture phenomenon back to avid gamers in the latest LucasArts’ KINECT STAR WARS.

Born and raised in Minnesota, pursued his passion for music into college and earned an undergraduate degree in Music Performance/Education from The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and then a Masters in composition for contemporary media from the Eastman School of Music.

Newmaster's broad musical range and experience throughout his career gives him an advantage in being able to adapt to the ever-changing film/music industries.  In 2009, Newmaster arranged and orchestrated for composer Tyler Bates’ action packed score to Rob Zombie’s animated film, THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO. Newmaster also composed additional music and orchestrated for LucasArts’ INDIANA JONES AND THE STAFF OF KINGS.

When he is not writing music, Newmaster is an active professional trumpet player who performs and records in a variety of groups.  He has performed with bands such as The Brian Setzer Orchestra and the Seth Macfarlane Big Band, and has recorded for numerous TV shows and films including FAMILY GUY, CLEVELAND, AMERICA’S GOT TALENT and AMERICAN DAD.

Of composing SOMETHING WICKED, Newcastle said, “One example of a cue that I really enjoyed writing in this style is ‘Serious Breakdown'. It's a cue that starts very haunting and tense and then builds up to a moment where the audience might sense something terrible is going to happen, but it makes a very quick transition from horror to sadness as an element about one of the characters is revealed. I really enjoy scoring scenes that require that kind of musical complexity and depth.”

SOMETHING WICKED is a current day action thriller set in a mid-size American community (Eugene, Oregon) in the Pacific Northwest. Christine and her boyfriend James have just graduated from Highland High School and are looking forward to enjoying their future together. Everything appears to be going well until Christine and James realize that she is being stalked by a psychologically tormented and obsessed young man, who in the end, will stop at nothing to be with her.

Merchant Films presents SOMETHING WICKED in theaters on April 4, 2014.  SOMETHING WICKED– Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally and Amazon Disc On Demand on April 1, 2014.

Lakeshore Records: Rob The Mob [2014] - Stephen Endelman

LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS:
ROB THE MOB [2014]
Featuring Original Music by Stephen Endelman
And the Original Song “Love And The Gun” with Music by Endelman, Lyrics by Director Raymond DeFelitta, Performed by Tamela D’Amico

(March 12, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the ROB THE MOB – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and through Amazon-On-Demand on March 18, 2014.  The album features original music by Stephen Endelman (EVELYN, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER) and classic tracks by Deee-Lite, Staple Singers and Wilson Pickett, along with the new cut “Love and the Gun”, which features lyrics by director Raymond DeFelitta and vocals by Tamela D’Amico.  ROB THE MOB will be in theaters on March 21, 2014.

“Raymond has made a career out of capturing Italian American working class characters with a myriad of interesting features,” said Endelman. “He knows the world so well and is able to capture it in a beautiful and quite lyrical manner, always with taste and integrity.”

DeFelitta had the idea to write a song for the movie – which would become “Love and the Gun”.  According to Endelman, DeFelitta suggested, “Let's make it a big 60s/Italianate song - and that's what we wrote. Ray came up with a lyric, I then recorded it with a great band and string players.  Tamela D'Amico came in, translated it into Italian, and sung it in both English and Italian.  It just fits the movie perfectly.”

Grammy-nominated composer, arranger and producer Stephen Endelman has successfully demonstrated his ability to write music and collaborate in a variety of genres.  His scores range from lush, classical orchestrations, to contemporary, pop-driven tapestries.  In the contemporary music world, Endelman has worked with music icons including Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette, Natalie Cole and soprano Renee Fleming. As a film composer, Endelman has work with Oscar®-lauded filmmakers including David O. Russell (FLIRTING WITH DISASTER), Martin Scorsese (KICKED IN THE HEAD), Irwin Winkler (HOME OF THE BRAVE), David Mamet (REDBELT), Bruce Beresford (EVELYN) and Robert Deniro (A BRONX TALE). Endelman's wide-ranging works have spanned the rich orchestral score for THE ENGLISHMAN WHO WENT UP A HILL, BUT CAME DOWN A MOUNTAIN, to his minimalist, modern score for the hit comedy FLIRTING WITH DISASTER.

New York City, 1991. Small-time crooks Tommy (Michael Pitt) and Rosie (Nina Arianda) have two things in common: a crazy-passionate love for one another and—after they’re caught robbing a florist on Valentine’s Day—prison records. Trying to go straight, Rosie lands a job at a debt-collection agency and persuades Tommy to join her. But soon Tommy is skipping his shifts to do something much more interesting—attend the landmark trial of Gambino-family boss John Gotti, where Mafia hit man Sammy "The Bull" Gravano provides graphic testimony that could finally bring down the flamboyant mob kingpin.

“It's hard to believe that two people could be so stupid as to think they could get away with robbing the social clubs of known mafioso,” said Endelman. “I used a lot of homemade pads as textures for their darkness. I also went to a prison and recorded everything you could possibly imagine inside a prison cell. It was a disused prison and that became my percussion ensemble.”

Lakeshore Records: The Motel Life [2014]

LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS:
THE MOTEL LIFE [2014]
Featuring Original Music by David Holmes and Keefus Ciancia
With Songs by Townes Van Zandt, Justin Townes Earle and The Kills!
“Like An Outlaw Country Song” – The New York Times
(March 21, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the THE MOTEL LIFE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available digitally and via Amazon on Demand on March 25th, and on CD April 22, 2014.  The album features original music by David Holmes (OCEAN’S ELEVEN, DIANA) and Keefus Ciancia (NASHVILLE, TRUE DETECTIVE), with songs by The Kills, Little Hurricane, Justin Townes Earle, Jonathan Clay and Townes Van Zandt.

In adapting the novel by Willy Vlautin for the big screen, the film’s co-director Alan Polsky described, that he and co-director Gabe Polsky “wanted to deliver on the book’s honest portrayal of Reno and the difficult situation the brothers encountered while enhancing the underlying fairy tale feeling at the core of the story.  We thought the music was one of the best ways to bring this to the surface.”

Alan and Gabe Polsky selected songs to help create this atmosphere, many of which appear on the soundtrack album, and turned to composers David Holmes and Keefus Ciancia for original music.  “David and Keefus immediately responded to the tone of the film and the types of songs we were looking at to combine with the score.  We felt a strong connection with them,” said Alan.  “They were totally on board with creating a score that was void of the classic melodromatic elements that you find in many indie films. We wanted something that had the emotional weight that the story deserved yet didn’t feel like we were forcing the audience’s hand.”

THE MOTEL LIFE is a searing and profound examination of brotherhood set in the timeless Sierra Nevadan frontier. Frank (Emile Hirsch, INTO THE WILD) and Jerry Lee (Stephen Dorff, SOMEWHERE) are brothers who get by on telling fantastic stories and creating rich illustrations. When Jerry Lee is involved in a hit-and-run accident, the brothers are forced across the state to the home of Frank’s old flame, Annie (Dakota Fanning, the TWILIGHT saga). While they seem safe from the law, Jerry Lee’s instability and all-consuming guilt render their future increasingly uncertain. "Through a miracle of tone, mood, and emotion, THE MOTEL LIFE adds up to a heartbreaking whole." (Sheila O'Malley, Rogerebert.com)

Varese Sarabande: OCULUS [2014] - The Newton Brothers

(March 24, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records will release the OCULUS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack available digitally on April 8thth, and on CD April 15, 2014.  The film, directed by Mike Flanagan, features an original score by The Newton Brothers (DETACHMENT, SETUP).

“OCULUS will freak you out and take you on an emotional roller coaster.  Even our score--lullabies, distorted broken glass, a children's choir,” said Newton Brother Taylor.

“An interesting part of the scoring process was paying attention to the moments where there needed to be a void of score.  Specific scenes of the movie depend on you being taken by surprise surrounded by moments of chaos,” explained Andy. “The trick was to musically land the plane gently so you feel a sense of natural calm and then to hit with textures and sounds that are jarring and discomforting.”

Film and television composers The Newton Brothers (Andy & Taylor) have been making music since they were kids. Both raised on opera, radio, concerts and movies, The Newton Brothers find influence from greats such as Puccini, Debussy, Elmer Bernstein, Kraftwerk, NIN, The Beatles, Bernard Herrmann, Hall & Oates and Erich Korngold.

Their credits include Wayne Kramer’s dark comedy PAWN SHOP CHRONICLES (starring Paul Walker, Matt Dillon, Elijah Wood and Brendan Fraser) and Tony Kaye's acclaimed dramatic feature DETACHMENT (starring Adrien Brody, Lucy Liu, Christina Hendricks, James Caan). The Newton Brothers have scored and written songs for feature films such as SETUP (directed by Mike Gunther), REVOLUCION (directed by Rodrigo Garcia), and THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES (directed by Mark Pellington).  This past year, they had three films at the Toronto International Film Festival, LIFE OF CRIME, PROXY, and OCULUS.  Currently The Newton Brothers are working on SOMNIA which they are co-scoring with Danny Elfman.

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents.  Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home.  Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century.  With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again...

“The theme for the mirror ended up being this pulsing bass…super simple, but incredibly effective,” said Taylor.

“Larger bass and celli sections were really helpful in achieving some severe chaos,” described Andy.  “At several points of the film bass, percussion and synths were playing independent of the string section.  We think it proved to be very effective.”

Relativity Media presents OCULUS, in theaters on April 11, 2014.  The OCULUS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally on April 8th and on CD April 15, 2014.

Music Box Records: L’État Sauvage and Le Grand Frère - Pierre Jansen

After releasing on CD René la Canne, Le Bon Plaisir and Descente aux Enfers, Music Box Records explores a new chapter in the career of Francis Girod, releasing the two original motion picture soundtracks composed by Pierre Jansen for this director. L’État Sauvage (1978) adapted from the novel of the same name by Georges Conchon (winner of the 1964 Prix Goncourt) deals with the initial period after decolonization of a fictional African state, centring on the tormented and chaotic destinies of five main characters. Le Grand Frère (1983), a revamp set in Africa and Marseille of Sam Ross’s novel Ready for the Tiger (translated as part of the Série Noire collection), allows, through the conduit of a seedy story of revenge, for the head on tackling of a number of social problems, not least among which features the integration of the first generation of French of North African descent.

Pierre Jansen recalls his two exigent collaborations with Francis Girod: “L’État Sauvage deliberately avoided any musical reference to Africa as it was my intent to avoid at all costs producing an illustrated postcard in sound. To resurrect the harsh savagery of racism – and even of the types of racism denounced in the film to the point where the viewer is led to wonder who it is exactly who is the savage! – I opted for a Westernized, jerkily rhythmic and dissonant score, which can be heard right from the main title, which is particularly jarring.”

“For Le Grand Frère, I let myself be inspired by the general climate of the film and I also wrote in a highly rigorous manner, image by image, out of which came a result approaching a more traditional type of film music. One can distinguish two principal streams running through what I contributed: on the one hand the symphonic tracks intended to enhance the dramatics of the screenplay and the psychology of the protagonists with impressionistic touches in places and on the other hand I created the majority of the source music myself.”

Music Box Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar and EMI Music Publishing, presents both scores for the first time on CD and transferred from the original stereo master tapes. The limited edition of 500 copies comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Laurent Perret and an interview with Pierre Jansen.

Music Box Records: She-Devil [Score] - Howard Shore

Music Box Records presents the original soundtrack from She-Devil by Howard Shore. Based on the novel The Life and Loves of a She-Devil by British author Fay Weldon, Susan Seidelman’s adaptation of the book tells the story of frumpy housewife Ruth (Roseanne Barr) who thinks she got it made with her handsome accountant husband, Bob (Ed Begley Jr.). When Bob meets bestselling romance novelist Mary Fisher (Meryl Streep), the couple quickly separates but the trauma unleashes great powers within Ruth. Once bored and lonesome, Ruth reinvents herself, gets a job, then starts her own enterprise in order to carry out an elaborate revenge against Bob…

Written by Howard Shore (composer of The Lord of the Rings and most of David Cronenberg’s films), the music for She-Devil is a brilliantly energetic score balancing between deliberately overblown romance and devilishly clever cues underscoring Ruth’s sudden urge for creative destruction. The key idea of the score is transformation as we can hear two sides of the most important musical ideas – one for Mary and one for Ruth. There’s also a rich tapestry of musical allusions, ranging from the evergreen song Strangers in the Night (the theme for Bob and Mary) to colorful references from Russian classical music, including Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and The Gnome.

While there was a previous soundtrack release of She-Devil, it was a "songs from and inspired by" type of compilation that featured nothing from Shore’s brilliant contributions to the film. Music Box Records corrects this omission by releasing all 42 minutes of the underscore, transferred from the original 24-track master tapes, with several reprises of the great romance theme, Ruth’s chilling vengeance music and a couple of other surprises for the attentive listener. The 8-page booklet features liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film and the score, plus includes quotes from Howard Shore on how he remembers the project.

La-La Land Records: WAVELENGTH - Tangerine Dream

WAVELENGTH
Music by Tangerine Dream
Limited Edition of 1500 Units

La-La Land Records and 20th Century Fox present the remastered re-issue of Tangerine Dream's (SORCERER, THE KEEP, LEGEND, MIRACLE MILE) original score to the 1983 motion picture sci-fi drama WAVELENGTH, starring Robert Carradine, Cherie Currie and Keenan Wynn, and directed by Mike Gray. Electronic musical geniuses Tangerine Dream find the inner-pulse of this overlooked cult gem about a pair of lovers who attempt to rescue innocent, child-like aliens held captive in a secret government? installation and help return them to their world. This striking score manages moments of sublime beauty and poetry, even spirituality, while also supporting the film's quotient of menace and suspense. Previously out-of-print, WAVELENGTH returns in this handsome re-issue sounding better than ever. Produced by Nick Redman and Ford A. Thaxton and remastered by James Nelson, this limited edition of 1500 units also features in-depth, exclusive liners from writer Randall D. Larson and otherworldly art design by Mark Banning.

La-La Land Records: THE SUM OF ALL FEARS - Jerry Goldsmith

THE SUM OF ALL FEARS
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 3000 Units

La-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures and WEA join forces to present the expanded and remastered re-issue of legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith's (THE BLUE MAX, PATTON, THE OMEN, BASIC INSTINCT) original motion picture score to the 2002 Paramount Pictures espionage thriller THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, based on the acclaimed Tom Clancy novel of the same name, starring Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Liev Schreiber, and directed by Phil Alden Robinson. Goldsmith brings his decades worth of musical prowess to bear on a young Jack Ryan's desperate mission to stop a potential nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia, triggered by a Neo-Nazi leader who threatens to detonate a nuke in an American football stadium. Striking themes and motifs abound in Goldsmith's powerhouse orchestral score, expertly weaving patriotism and hope with chilling dread and nail-biting suspense in equal measure. It's undoubtedly an important work from this iconic maestro's final chapter. With an expanded running time almost 30 minutes longer than the original 2002 soundtrack release, this deluxe presentation of THE SUM OF ALL FEARS features previously unreleased score cues as well as bonus tracks and songs - all of it remastered by Doug Schwartz in stellar sonic fashion. Produced by Dan Goldwasser, this limited edition of 3000 units features exclusive, in depth liners by writer Jeff Bond and thrilling art direction by Goldwasser.

Intrada: The Spy Who Came in From the Cold - Sol Kaplan

INTRADA Special Collection:
THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD
Composed and Conducted by SOL KAPLAN

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold marked the beginning of a brief stint of projects Kaplan would score for Paramount Pictures in the mid ’60s, including Judith in 1966. He wrote a lonely, melancholy theme that captured both with the film’s cold, monochrome look and Richard Burton’s haunted, morally exhausted character. The melody, often performed as a gloomy saxophone solo shrouded in a heavy, relentless march of rumbling, low piano notes, dominates the score, repeating as if to underscore the futility of a bleak and quietly angry view of the world. The Spy score features a library of extended piano effects, created by striking, brushing or plucking the strings in various ways to create resonant, highly atmospheric sounds. These effects permeate the score, swamping the cues in mysterious, nocturnal textures and adding to the feeling of gloom and uncertainty.

For this release, Intrada presents not only the original stereo LP rerecorded program sourced from the master tapes, but also the film recording, complete and in stereo from the master elements stored at Paramount.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold features British intelligence operative Alec Leamas (Richard Burton), a burnt-out veteran who returns from Germany to London after one of his operatives is shot. Leamas is keen to retire, but his superior asks him to undertake one last mission. He is to exaggerate his very real disillusionment and anger in order to move Eastern bloc agents in Britain to encourage him to defect. Once relocated in East Germany, he will provide Communists with evidence to implicate one of their top operatives, former Nazi officer Hans-Dieter Mundt, as a double agent and cause him to be executed—a slippery method of disposing of a major threat to British intelligence. But of course, nothing goes exactly as planned.

Intrada: Once is Not Enough [1975] - Henry Mancini

Intrada Special Collection:
ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH
Composed and Conducted by HENRY MANCINI

Intrada announces the premiere release of Henry Mancini's score to the 1975 film Once is Not Enough -- what is probably Henry Mancini's most “sixties” sounding score of the seventies. It is rich in both warm and sad melody, chock full of striking combo and big band source cues surely to linger long after the disc stops playing. Fashioning one of his most beautiful main themes, as well as an equally haunting melody for the tender/tragic character of January, the score centers on two primary themes representing the dueling sides of January’s love life. Set against the gleaming gold of an Oscar statuette, the score opens with a theme that sparkles and shimmers with lush strings underscored by sweeping harp glissandi, synthesizer swells and a tinkling bell-like figure, setting the stage for the rest of this rare Mancini gem to follow.

For this premiere release, Intrada had access to the 2? 16-track session masters vaulted by Paramount in pristine condition.

Kirk Douglas stars as a down-on-his-luck producer who marries the fifth-wealthiest woman in the world (Alexis Smith) to provide for his daughter, January (Deborah Raffin), a young woman suffering from a serious daddy complex. George Hamilton stars as January’s suave suitor, Melina Mercouri is a Garbo-like recluse, and Brenda Vaccaro provides an Oscar-nominated jolt of energy as a sexually ferocious magazine editor.

Varese Sarabande: Need For Speed [2014] - Nathan Furst

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE:
NEED FOR SPEED [2014]
Featuring Original Music By Nathan Furst

(March 17, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records will release NEED FOR SPEED – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, currently available digitally, and on CD April 15, 2014 via disc-on-demand later in March.  The soundtrack features original score composed by Nathan Furst (ACT OF VALOR).

On the heels of last years #1 box office hit, ACT OF VALOR composer Nathan Furst is quickly gaining recognition as one of Hollywood’s elite young composers.  Continuing his almost decade long collaboration with director Scott Waugh, Nathan Furst started writing NEED FOR SPEED themes after reading the script in preproduction. The result is a rousing and powerful score with epic themes.

"Scott and I discussed the story, and the role the score should play in telling that story,” said Furst. “We quickly found that big, memorable themes, combining a large orchestra with big broad guitars and synths felt right."

The blending of dream-like guitars and synth elements with memorable and compelling themes surrounded by the strength and elegance of a symphony orchestra has created an exciting American Rock Opera as the sonic backdrop for this emotional story.

The score was written and produced within the production facility of Bandito Bros, where Furst was able to score the film in a very collaborative environment with the director and editor. The score enlists the magic and talents of 90 musicians across 3 recording studios.

Furst is a self-taught musician, and began composing music at a young age. After attending Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), Nathan left college to accept offers to score film and television projects. To date, Nathan has composed the themes and scores to over 50 films and television shows.

Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, DreamWorks Pictures’ NEED FOR SPEED captures the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. An exciting return to the great car-culture films of the 1960s and ‘70s, when authenticity brought a new level of intensity to the action, NEED FOR SPEED taps into what makes the American myth of the open road so enticing.
The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) — who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side — reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Just as a major sale to a car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poot) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

“There are 3 key themes, with one being a long sweeping theme that plays throughout - sometimes in the orchestra, sometimes with a glistening ambient guitar,” described Furst.  “We purposefully stayed away from the huge percussion and drum sounds that have come to be expected from this kind of score.  Instead, we went with orchestral textures with a lot of ambient, clean guitars.”

Dreamworks Picture presents NEED FOR SPEED, in theaters now.  The NEED FOR SPEED -Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records is currently available digitally and will be released on CD April 15, 2014.

Varese Sarabande: Face Of Love [2014] - Marcelo Zarvos

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE:
FACE OF LOVE [2014]
Featuring Original Music By Marcelo Zarvos

Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE FACE OF LOVE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on March 11th and via disc-on-demand later in March.  The soundtrack features original score composed by Marcelo Zarvos (ENOUGH SAID, TV’s RAY DONOVAN).

“Arie [Posin, director] wanted a timeless feel to the score,” described Zarvos. “We used an orchestra with very strong thematic material that would hit the emotional, romantic and suspenseful elements of the story.”

Brazilian-born Marcelo Zarvos burst onto the indie film landscape in the 2000s with his scores for KISSING JESSICA STEIN and THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR.  His trademark is a seamless blend of classical, orchestral, rock, electronic and various ethnic and folk elements, which together create a uniquely affecting and emotionally charged music.  Zarvos was named one of the 25 New Faces of Indie Film in 2004 by FilmMaker Magazine.

Currently the composer of the hit new Showtime series RAY DONOVAN, Zarvos’ recent film scores include Nicole Holofcener’s ENOUGH SAID, Barry Levinson’s THE BAY, Daniel Barnz’s WON’T BACK DOWN, David Mamet’s PHIL SPECTOR and Lee Sternthal’s THE WORDS. He has collaborated with Robert DeNiro, Barry Levinson, Antoine Fuqua, Curtis Hanson, Tod Williams, Ang Lee, Jodie Foster, Cary Fukunaga, David Mamet and Allen Coulter.  Zarvos’s film credits include THE GOOD SHEPHERD, BROOKLYN’S FINEST, SIN NOMBRE, REMEMBER ME, and HOLLYWOODLAND.  He has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards (for YOU DON’T KNOW JACK and TAKING CHANCE) and an HMMA Award for BROOKLYN’S FINEST.  His upcoming projects include LITTLE ACCIDENTS, THE HUMBLING, and the second season of RAY DONOVAN.

Five years after the death of her beloved husband Garrett (Ed Harris), Nikki (Annette Bening) meets a man who seems his exact duplicate. Not only does this stranger possess the same deeply lined face and startling blue eyes, he also shares Garrett's kindness, humor, and passion for art. And yet he is a stranger. Romance blossoms between Nikki and this alluring doppelgänger, but she can't bring herself to tell him the truth about what drew her to him. So she hides her photos and prevents him from meeting friends and family. Still, she can't resist taking him to all the old haunts. It isn't a question of if the truth will come out, but when. Arie Posin directs this emotionally thorny drama about how we cope with loss, live in the moment and ultimately move forward.

“The use of music is quite sophisticated and had to reflect the deep feeling of loss that Annette Bening's character feels, as well the dangerous psychological game she is playing,” described Zarvos.  “The goal of the music was to keep us guessing to the very end what was real or imaginary.”

IFC Films presents THE FACE OF LOVE, in theaters on March 7.  THE FACE OF LOVE -  Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally on March 11th and as a disc-on-demand on later in the month.

Grand Piano [2014]
Music by: Victor Reyes

Victor Reyes’ score — incorporating originals and furious arrangements of existing pieces by Beethoven and others — is, needless to say, a relentless asset. (Guy Lodge, Variety) Each arpeggio and every strike of the bow is used to serve and compliment the film’s quieter moments while the orchestra leaps into action when things start to ramp up. (Drew Tinnin, Dread Central)

Reyes energetic and beautifully powerful music greatly aids the tension and fraught atmosphere and is certainly more than a background or a film score.  Both film and score are highly recommended. (John Mansell, Movie Music Italiano)

Not only is the score a fully functioning classical work in its own right, but as it progresses the music actually matches the dynamic and dramatic arc of the film. (Jonathan Broxton)

MovieScore Media/Kronos Records will release the critically acclaimed, award-winning score for Grand Piano by Spanish composer Víctor Reyes. Directed by Eugenio Mira, this high-concept thriller has been described by reviewers as “Speed with a piano”. The plot focuses on concert pianist Tom Selznick who finds an odd note on his sheet music prepared for his next concert - he must play flawlessly or someone will die. Considering this is one of the hardest piano pieces ever, Tom must defeat his inner demons to complete the mission and give us enough time to solve the mystery. Starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack, our release of Grand Piano coincides with the film’s US theatrical premiere on 7 March 2014.

Making his MSM debut is composer Víctor Reyes, who is one of the great emerging talents of the Spanish film music scene with several great international credits to his name. High-concept thrills seems to be a specialty for the composer; possibly his best-known work was written for Buried (2010), starring Ryan Reynolds as a soldier trapped in an underground coffin with only a cell phone providing communication with the outside world. One of Reyes’ other recent credits is Red Lights (2012) in which Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy investigate the supernatural abilities of a blind psychic played by Robert de Niro.

Building upon the traditions of classic Bernard Herrmann scores like Hangover Square or The Man Who Knew Too Much, Grand Piano also features an original concert piece taughtly integrated into the plot. Victor Reyes himself described his work as an “Octopus Concerto” as the player would need eight hands to play it properly - yet pianist John Lenehen excels at delivering a gripping performance for all three movements. The album is bookended by the ”Main Titles” and the notorious ”La Cinquette” which has been described as unplayable in the film, yet Tom Selznick must defeat this monster in order to move ahead in his life...

Very few movies look at the music as a central character as opposed to a simple underscore, but Grand Piano knows is greatest asset and allows it to shine. Victor Reyes’ score had already won the International Film Music Critics Award for ‘Best Original Score for an Action/Adventure/Thriller Film’ and was one of the five scores nominated for the ‘Film Score of the Year’ IFMCA award. It’s also been a recurring guest on many reviewers’ ‘Best of Film Music 2013' lists (Cinematic Sound Radio #3, Reel Music #1) which is quite an achievement that had no commercial release - until now! MovieScore Media is proud to release Victor Reyes’ exceptionally well-crafted and critically noted music for the film.

Sony Music/Masterworks: Rio 2 [2014] - John Powell

Sony Music announces the release of John Powell's Original Motion Picture Score Soundtrack of RIO 2 on April 8, a computer-animated adventure and comedy featuring new music by John Powell. The movie, directed by Carlos Saldanha, and stars Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jamie Foxx, plus Andy Garcia, Rita Moreno and Kristin Chenoweth . RIO 2 is the much-anticipated follow-up to the global blockbuster film RIO (2011). The film opens everywhere April 11, 2014.

John Powell was catapulted into the realm of A-list composers by displaying an entirely original voice with his oft-referenced scores to the Matt Damon/Bourne film trilogy. He has become the go-to writer for family animated films, scoring such hits as Shrek, Chicken Run, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Bolt, Rio, Happy Feet, Happy Feet 2, Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda 2, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and Ice Age: Continental Drift. His pulsating action music has provided the fuel for Hancock, Green Zone, Stop Loss, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Italian Job. Powell’s music has also sweetened the romance of Two Weeks Notice and P.S. I Love You, empowered X-Men: The Last Stand, lent tenderness to I Am Sam and gripping drama to United 93. Powell’s infectious score for How to Train Your Dragon earned him his first Academy Award® nomination and was nominated for a Grammy® in 2008 for his work on Happy Feet.

The association with Rio de Janeiro makes the film highly topical ahead of the 2014 football World Cup, and the score of RIO 2 closely involves local artists: UAKTI, an instrumental group; Milton Nascimento, a well-known Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist; the singer Carlinhos Brown, whose musical style blends tropicália, reggae and traditional Brazilian percussion; and the Barbatuques, leading exponents of body percussion, who make organic music using the body as an instrument. The Barbatuques performed at the special Fifa event for the official announcement of the logo of the 2014 World Cup.

Back Lot Music: Bad Words [2014] - Rolfe Kent

BACK LOT MUSIC PRESENTS:
BAD WORDS [2014]
Featuring Original Music by Rolfe Kent

(March 13, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Back Lot Music will release the BAD WORDS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on Tuesday, March 18, 2014. The album features original music composed by Golden Globe Award nominee Rolfe Kent (SIDEWAYS, UP IN THE AIR).

Jason Bateman (IDENTITY THIEF) makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy BAD WORDS. He stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. While reporter Jenny Widgeon (Kathryn Hahn of WE’RE THE MILLERS) attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand of HOMELAND) who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life. Focus Features releases BAD WORDS in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, March 14; in select cities on Friday, March 21; and in more cities on Friday, March 28.

“The tone of BAD WORDS feels as if it has its own rules. It was fun and strange to have this wonderfully ironic and dry Jason on-screen – and also in the room as I worked,” says composer Rolfe Kent. “Jason and I spoke before BAD WORDS was even shot, about how clarinet might be great for the score. I took it further and suggested doing just woodwind – no strings and no brass. We got the flavor we wanted.”

Unexpected texture and sounds, and a signature musical personality, are the hallmarks of the work of English-born film composer Rolfe Kent, who has scored over 50 films, including the Oscar-nominated UP IN THE AIR (for which was nominated for a Satellite award) and SIDEWAYS (for which he was nominated for Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards); and ABOUT SCHMIDT, ELECTION, MEAN GIRLS, LEGALLY BLONDE, WEDDING CRASHERS, GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST, and NURSE BETTY. Kent also composed the Emmy-nominated main title theme for the Showtime hit series DEXTER. In 2012, he received the BMI Awards’ Richard Kirk Award for Career Achievement.

MovieScore Media: Twist of Faith [2014] - Jeff Toyne

Paul A. Kaufman’s Twist of Faith is a Lifetime original movie starring r’n’b singer Toni Braxton. The film tells the story of Jacob (David Julian Hirsh), a Jewish cantor whose world comes crashing down when he witnesses the murder of his wife and three children. Jacob abandons his identity and eventually finds himself in a small Alabama community where he is embraced by Nina (Braxton), a single mother and her small gospel community who all help Jacob to reconcile with the past and find new meaning in life.

Canadian composer Jeff Toyne is a returning guest to our label. Equally at home in television, Toyne scored several features for Lifetime, including Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story (2011), winner of the Canadian Screen Award for Best TV Movie. Our previous releases with the composer include Shadow in the Trees (2007) and Within (2009).

While these scores show Jeff Toyne’s talent for conjuring darker emotions, Twist of Faith will introduce a brand new side of the composer who mixes the world of traditional Jewish melodies (such as “Kol Nidre”) with the rhythm of gospel tunes. Performed by the Vancouver Film Orchestra and conducted by the composer, Toyne’s score is the perfect spiritual accompaniment to the rich collection of gospel songs.

MovieScore Media: The Brotherhood (La Hermandad) [2014] - Arnau Bataller

Performed by Barcelona’s Liceu Opera House Symphony and Choir in their first ever film score recording, Arnau Bataller’s music for The Brotherhood (La hermandad) combines dark textures (orchestral effects and electronics) with a more thematic approach characterized by the evocative choral writing inspired by the story’s religious setting.

Composer Arnau Bataller has worked on countless American and Spanish projects, including José Luis Alemán’s H.P. Lovecraft-inspired horror films The Valdemar Legacy (2010) and The Valdemar Legacy II: The Forbodden Shadow (2010) – also available from MovieScore Media. The Brotherhood marks Bataller’s second collaboration with Julio Martí after La victoria de Úrsula (2011).

The Brotherhood is a moody Spanish thriller written and directed by Julio Martí. The film tells the story of Sara (Lydia Bosch), a successful horror author who survives an accident just outside a secluded Benedictine monastery in northern Italy. Even though she should stay in bed, Sara soon finds intriguing secrets about the monastery: strange stains on the ceiling, an infant crying in the night, an old photograph and a chilling book on the Brotherhood and their disturbing customs…
We are proud to release the chilling, religiously-inspired score by composer Arnau Bataller to coincide with the film’s Spanish premiere on 21 March 2014.
